WHAT IS BOS? Bushwick Open Studios is a self-organized, collaborative festival produced by Arts in Bushwick. Hundreds of artists open their studios, participate in group shows, and perform in events. Festival activities take place in a myriad of venues and environments, including galleries, theaters, homes, artist studios, local businesses, parks, street corners, and other public spaces. Bushwick community members are encouraged to participate by presenting art, organizing activities and assisting with festival operations. The purpose of the festival is to create an open and inclusive event that benefits the neighborhood through sharing artistic projects, encouraging dialogue and fostering a greater engagement with the arts. Now in its thirteen year, Bushwick Open Studios is an exciting opportunity for artists to experiment outside the standard context of sales and space competition. BOS 19 features more than200 shows. We hope you enjoy your weekend!

WHO IS ARTS IN BUSHWICK? Arts In Bushwick is an all volunteer organization that serves and engages artists and local residents through creative accessibility and community organizing. It is our goal to create an integrated and sustainable neighborhood, and to bring together all Bushwick residents and stakeholders to counter development-driven displacement. Arts In Bushwick was founded in 2007, as a result of grassroots efforts to produce Bushwick Open Studios 07. The organization has two core functions - producing neighborhood arts festivals, and facilitating community projects and dialogue. All of our activities are produced by volunteers and presented at no cost to the public. Arts In Bushwick maintains a completely open structure, inviting all community members to bring their ideas and to participate in collaboratively producing the organization and its activities. artsinbushwick.org

TARA KOPP

317 Stagg St., Brooklyn, 11206

If art is about life, then art should move. I use magnets to create work that is infinitely flexible. Recently I made a collection of luscious roses and took it out into the world, “rose bombing” wherever possible. It’s an invasive species.

My recent oil paintings depict daily urban life. I create architectural models with miniatures--dolls, furniture, and other objects I collect --which become scenes for the work. The doll-like characters are surrogates for the average urban dweller.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS @ 538 JOHNSON

Bogart St and Harrison Pl, Brooklyn, 11237

538 Johnson Ave., Brooklyn, 11237

Neil Constantine returns to the streets for Bushwick Open Studios with “U-haul Emotions: Vol. 2.” With his artistry in full force, he evokes something within any viewer through selections from his photography and painting projects. Come see his art for yourself at the corner of Bogart st and Harrison Place. allaroundimages.com

Our exhibit celebrates the centennial of 538 Johnson Avenue: a former mattress factory, doll factory, and notorious punk venue. The exhibit is divided into two sections of collected ephemera related to the two manufacturing giants which inhabited the building, Englander Bed Spring Co. and Goldberger Doll Manufacturing Company. iniconic.com

A War of Emotions: New abstract & surreal paintings by artist Daniel Tackney - Digrazia. Large-scale depictions of brain chemistry & intense emotions. Each painting shows something what it’s like it live with rc bipolar disorder and fight against a constant emotional current. Stop by the artist studio where 7 paintings will be exhibited on friday, saturday, & sunday. When you arrive please call 551265-4920 and we will let you right in. www.DTDabstraction.com

Through this body of work I’m interested in exploring self-image in the era of disinformation. I’m presenting a series of selfies done with a purposely broken lens, which distorts the image without the use of Photoshop. The central figure becomes unrecognizable, leaving only the surroundings in focus as vague clues for the viewer to create his own story about the subject. www.paulvinet.com

“Status Pending” is a solo exhibit of new paintings by Robert McCann at the non-profit gallery Amos Eno. The work synthesizes unstable elements of the modern world, reflecting on public personas and private life, the spillover between entertainment and reality, and the warped comforts of nostalgia.

Telluric is a mix media series inspired by the erotic ethos found in the poetry from antiquity, and by its evocative food metaphors to describe or entice love, beauty, and sensuality. The work is formed by visual compositions with foods and spices that are mentioned in The Song of Songs (Davidic monarchy era, circa 1000 B.C.E.), from the Old Testament; in The Symposium (385–370 B.C .E.), by Plato, and in the remaining fragments from the poems written by Sappho (Lesbos, circa 600 B.C.E.). cristianebouger.com

A pioneer of the Electromineralist movement in digital art, ZL employs a unique style of mixed media and photo manipulation in order to create psychedelic impressionist deconstructions of the boundaries between the organic and the synthetic. zeldaleft@gmail.com

We are nothing more than professor X’s protecting the X men. We love them to the core of us. And nothing will stop us from protecting their MAGIC AKA Super Powers.

ELM MISSION The central focus of Educated Little Monsters is to offer multi disciplinary extracurricular enrichment programming for youth of color in the Brooklyn area. ELM has been a local grassroots movement dedicated to providing artistic outlets and equitable economic opportunities for youth of color for the past seven years. Our classes include instrumentation, songwriting, music recording, film making, videography and editing. We feel it is our duty to create resources and economical platforms for youth of color in gentrified areas where them and their families are in constant threat of displacement. While also empowering them to take social responsibility through performing and visual arts. It is important that we stay a youth led program. The youth have the power to decide what materials they would like to study and how, while ELM as space ensures their needs are met. To date, ELM has had students age 15 stay within the program well past their 18th birthdays, and many of those students work or volunteer today. This is a testament to ELM’s ability to not only engage students for semesters at a time, but also for years at a time. You can find our schedule on our website as well as become a monthly monster member. www.educatedlittlemonsters.org

Come by and visit our studio to see a selection of our recent works. Get an insight into the process of making Petrified Times, sculptures made of New York Times newspaper. Also Chairing New York will be on view, the ongoing photo saga following story of hundreds of found broken chairs and the Public Library a sculpture made of rescued books. Read in!

In these recent works I depict invented biological structures as well as figures with externalized anatomy. I aim to elevate the grotesque physical through repetitive and ritualistic processes, and hope to discomfort the viewer with these strange and sacred anatomical forms. laurenkerrart@gmail.com

Oliver Jones and MaryKate Maher will show new sculptures from their individual bodies of work. Maher’s work uses abstraction teetering on the edge of recognition to speak to the strange interior life of the body in relation to the world. Jones’ work draws on an eclectic variety of art historical sources. His work address cultural amnesia and the inescapable persistence of the past. oliverjones22@gmail.com

My Hub Studios is launching their newly revamped co working spaces for creatives! We offer co working space for music producers, DJs, composers, visual artists, entrepreneurs, small businesses, and freelancers of all kinds.

I create highly elaborated sculptures and videos with the use of Natural Mulberry silk fibers as the main material. I use silk as an analogy of self transformation, metamorphosis and neuroplasticity. In the last years I have developed original and experimental methods for working with silk fibers in sculpture, like Silk casting in silicon molds. With these methods I am able to keep the shine and bright of the silk that resembles marble. www.pablogarcialopez.com

STUDIO 43

16 Cypress Ave. Basement, Brooklyn, 11237

2 Saint Nicholas Ave., Brooklyn, 11237

Veronika’s work is best described as ‘jolie laide’ (beautiful ugly). Redefining beauty, the work is a direct confrontation that fuses fragility of some material and abject humanoid qualities of others. The work engages all the senses through heavy use of paint and unusual materials such as honey, glass, bugs and fabric.
