MAR CH // APRIL A SECTION OF

DanceHouse // Welcome WELCOME ALL TO OUR FINAL TWO PRESENTATIONS OF THE 2018/19 SEASON! We are delighted to welcome back Montreal powerhouse Compagnie Marie Chouinard, last seen on the DanceHouse stage in February 2015. Since then, internationally decorated choreographer Marie Chouinard has added Director of Dance for the Venice Biennale (2017–2020), and recipient of a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement in Dance, to her impressive resume of titles and awards. Hieronymus Bosch: The Garden of Earthly Delights deliciously shows off another masterwork by this iconic Canadian artist, and we look forward to welcoming new and returning Chouinard fans to the theatre. Come April, we turn the stage over to American troupe MOMIX as they weave together ballet, acrobatics, and circus technique into a beguiling new world of movement. For almost 40 years MOMIX has been travelling the world with their endlessly inventive works, and have long been on my list to bring to DanceHouse as a pillar of the American modern dance movement. Finally, the timing worked out. I am especially pleased the company is able to share Viva MOMIX with us, distilling more than three decades of work into a compilation of audience and critical favourites. Alongside this stunning performance, it is a pleasure to welcome Zdenka Gomes of Odlum Brown Limited into our circle of supporters as exclusive Production Sponsor of MOMIX. In the wake of the family-friendly Chotto Desh by the Akram Khan Company, we look forward to seeing many returning young faces and families in the crowd as well.

It has been a pleasure sharing six exceptional companies with you this season.”

As the 2018/19 series comes to a close, allow me to share a personal thanks with our circle of donors. Your passion and commitment to dance are inspiring. To those considering becoming a donor, I encourage you to jump in tonight! Donors directly support the presentation of exceptional, international, large-scale works, and expand the scale and reach of DanceHouse activities. Find any DanceHouse team member in the theatre lobby to make a donation or visit dancehouse.ca/donate to give directly online. It has been a pleasure sharing six exceptional companies with you this season. Sincerely,

Jim Smith, Cofounder, Artistic & Executive Director DanceHouse respectfully acknowledges that the land on which we gather is the unceded traditional territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations.

JUMP IN WITH

DANCEHOUSE With this, our final house program of the season, another year comes to a close around DanceHouse. Luckily, there is still time to jump in and join the DanceHouse family of donors. We strongly believe that art is essential to an inclusive civil society, cultural identity, and quality of life. Amazing work to this end is being carried out by all sorts of organizations, yet we still think there is work to be done here. DanceHouse strives to fill a specific community need and niche, as season after season the series showcases exceptional, large-scale dance from across Canada and beyond. After ten plus seasons, many visiting companies are still making both their DanceHouse debut and Vancouver premiere. We strive to share contemporary, powerful dance works with all communities, yet we would fall short of that goal without donor support. If you feel inspired by the work you see on stage and passionate about sharing it with others, please consider making a donation tonight. From brand new donors to returning donors to those looking to increase their impact, each gift expands DanceHouse’s ability to celebrate and share exceptional dance with all communities.

Find a DanceHouse volunteer or staff member in the lobby tonight to make your donation, or visit dancehouse.ca/donate.

Today, COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD enjoys an international reputation. Its trajectory began in 1978, when Marie Chouinard presented her first creation, Cristallisation. This work was followed by thirty solos performed on stages at home and abroad, including Marie Chien Noir (1982), S.T. A.B. (Space, Time and Beyond) (1986), and Afternoon of a Faun (1987), landmarks in contemporary dance of the past 40 years. In 1990, the soloist and choreographer founded her own company. Since that time, COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD has performed all over the world, and coproduces its creations with renowned partners such as the Venice Biennale, the ImPulsTanz International Dance Festival (Vienna), the Théâtre de la Ville (Paris), the Fondazione Musica Per Roma (Rome), Place des Arts (Montreal), Festival TransAmériques (Montreal) and the National Arts Centre (Ottawa). In 2007, the COMPAGNIE moved to its own building, Espace Marie Chouinard, in Montreal. For Marie Chouinard, each creation is an odyssey through the history of humanity that evades the linearity of a narrative. The intimate intelligence of the body, the inexhaustible complexity of its articulations and mutations command constructions that are achieved through form. The choreographer is thoroughly engaged in every aspect of a work, from music to scenography, lighting, costumes, and hairstyles, so they resonate with each other in a whole with great power of evocation. Hailed for their technique, versatility and performance skills, the ten permanent dancers of the COMPAGNIE, trained in different somatic approaches, bring Marie Chouinard’s iconic works to the stage. The award-winning dancer Carol Prieur celebrated her 20th anniversary with the COMPAGNIE in 2015. The COMPAGNIE has a vast repertoire of works, most still performed internationally: The Rite of Spring, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, 24 Preludes by Chopin, Le Cri du monde, Étude no 1, bODY_rEMIX/gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS, HENRI MICHAUX : MOUVEMENTS, Soft virtuosity, still humid, on the edge and HIERONYMUS BOSCH: THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS. The Rite of Spring has been performed for almost 25 years and become a classic in the history of contemporary dance. The choreographer’s works also appear in the repertoires of major ballet companies such as the National Ballet of Canada, the São Paulo Companhia dance, the Ballets de Monte-Carlo, the GöteborgsOperan and the Gulbenkian Ballet †. Moreover, since 2015, Marie Chouinard has created works for other companies, such as the Martha Graham Dance Company and Ballets de Monte-Carlo. In 2009, Marie Chouinard, the dancer, returned to the stage after a 20 year absence with her solo creation morning glories :)-(: and since 2012, has danced IN MUSEUM,

Over the years, COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD has developed her own dance technique, taught by the dancers during workshops or master classes in tour. A true cultural ambassador for Quebec, Marie Chouinard has received several awards and distinctions in recognition

of her contribution to the arts, including the Bessie Award (New York, 2000), the Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal (2006), the title of Officer of the Order of Canada (2007), the title of Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France, 2009), the Denise Pelletier Award (Quebec, 2010), the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec Award for best choreography for THE GOLDEN MEAN (LIVE) (2012), the Samuel de Champlain Award (France, 2014), the title of Companion of the Ordre national des arts et des lettres du Québec (2015), the title of Chevalier of the Ordre national du Québec (2015), the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement (Canada, 2016), the Positano “Choreographer of the Year” Award (Italy, 2016) and the Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts (Canada, 2016). The name of Marie Chouinard became a dictionary entry in Le Petit Larousse, illustrated edition, in 2010 and in Le Robert in 2011.

MOMIX // WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY Closing Ceremony of the Winter Olympics at Lake Placid in 1980. In that same year he created MOMIX, which rapidly established an international reputation for inventive and often illusionistic choreography. The troupe has now been creating new work under his direction and touring worldwide for four decades.

MOSES PENDLETON (Artistic Director) has been one of America’s most innovative and widely performed choreographers and directors for almost 50 years. A co-founder of the ground-breaking Pilobolus Dance Theater in 1971, he formed his own company, MOMIX, in 1980. Mr. Pendleton has also worked extensively in film, TV, and opera and as a choreographer for ballet companies and special events. Mr. Pendleton was born and raised on a dairy farm in Northern Vermont. His earliest experiences as a showman came from exhibiting his family’s dairy cows at the Caledonian County Fair. He received his BA in English Literature from Dartmouth College in 1971. Pilobolus began touring immediately, and the group shot to fame in the 1970s, performing on Broadway under the sponsorship of Pierre Cardin, touring internationally, and appearing in PBS’s Dance in America and Great Performances series. By the end of the decade, Mr. Pendleton had begun to work outside of Pilobolus, performing in and serving as principal choreographer for the Paris Opera’s Intégrale Erik Satie in 1979 and choreographing the 14

Mr. Pendleton has also been active as a performer and choreographer for other companies. He staged Picabia’s Dadaist ballet Relâche for the Paris Opera Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet, and Tutuguri, based on the writings of Artaud, for the Deutsche Oper Berlin. SPEAKING OF DANCE CONVERSATIONS

Each time DanceHouse brings a company into town, it comes with perks for the Vancouver dance community! We engage each visiting company in a series of local masterclasses, reaching beyond the stage to offer local pre-professional and professional community artists a chance to learn from the exceptional artists you see on stage.

If tonight leaves you feeling hungry to dig into the details behind the themes and ideas you see on stage, this is the one for you!

We are proud to work with partners Arts Umbrella, Harbour Dance Centre, Lamondance Training and Performing Company, SFU School for Contemporary Arts, Training Society of Vancouver and others, to bring these noteworthy opportunities to the studio.

VOLUNTEERING WITH DANCEHOUSE A CONVERSATION WITH JACKIE SHAW Written by Penny Williams, DanceHouse Volunteer Get to know our community…. Jackie Shaw became a DanceHouse volunteer by “happy accident,” she says. “All because of Betroffenheit,” she adds. “It was summer, 2017. I’d seen the show when it was first presented in Vancouver, I knew DanceHouse was bringing it back as part of the new season, and I wanted to see it again. I decided to become a DanceHouse subscriber so I’d be sure of a ticket. While I was on the website, I kept clicking around, I found the volunteer page, and I followed up.” Call it a “happy accident” just waiting to happen: arguably Jackie’s path to DanceHouse began when she was a little girl in the English Midlands. “Thanks to my parents, I’ve always followed the arts. Our family would spend a week in London each year and take in as many cultural events as possible—not dumbed-down children’s shows, but quality productions of every kind. Theatre, ballet, opera, musicals, everything.” Young Jackie didn’t just sit in the audience. “I began taking tap and ballet lessons when I was four, and by the time I stopped, when I was 18, I was helping to teach the little ones.” Not surprisingly, she thought she’d like to become a teacher—though of music, not dance. “By the time I’d qualified, I knew I didn’t want to be a teacher, but I did still love theatre and dance. I applied for various arts admin jobs, but didn’t get one.” She was in Bath at the time. “The Theatre Royal was closed for renovations, so I became a volunteer as a way to get inside. I’d barely started when they offered me a position as box office assistant.” After that, back to Wolverhampton for a job as assistant box office manager, next on to London’s Bloomsbury Theatre (part of University College London) as box office manager—and then a whole new path for her life. Marriage, twin daughters, and life abroad (Cyprus, Zurich) as her husband pursued his career in finance. The next move was to Vancouver, for family rather than career purposes. The girls spent their teens in an arts-oriented school, and Jackie threw her talents into volunteer support for the various school productions. “Then it’s the summer of 2017, the girls are off to university, and I have time on my hands.” See? Betroffenheit was catalyst for Jackie’s involvement with DanceHouse, but not cause. True to her arts-admin background, Jackie was drawn to the DanceHouse office. She’s there one half-day a week, contributing to all the behind-the-scenes activities that ultimately get a performance on stage. Help clean up the database, print tickets, do filing, work on mailings, play proof-reader… Typical of volunteers, Jackie doesn’t think in terms of what she’s doing for the organization. “As far as I’m concerned, DanceHouse is doing me a favour,” she says. “They give me something interesting and useful to do, and keep me connected with the world of the arts.”
