Dear Friends of Imago, After three years of development, including automata engineering, complex fabrication, ingenious effects, song composition and much more, we finally opened La Belle, Lost in the World of the Automaton. Family audiences and critics raved, calling it “a delicious feast for the eyes and ears and nourishing fodder for the soul … It’s all wow factor!” If you missed it, you can see it in Portland when it returns from its first national tour, in April 2018. We brought you progressive adult shows like Sam Shepard’s and Joseph Chaikin’s Savage/ Love (“Soars!”), the famous tilting stage from No Exit, this time used to present the Greek tragedy Medea (“Intoxicating”), and the world premiere of The Reunion (“Makes you laugh out loud while it’s quietly breaking your heart”) as Carol Triffle adds to her canon of comedies beyond description. A selection of short stories by Raymond Carver titled Human Noise (“Uproarious”) were staged, and we were joined on one special evening by the author’s life/writing partner, well-known poet Tess Gallagher. Our signature work FROGZ returns this holiday season, and will tour nationally next year. Yes, we are quite busy bringing you adventurous adult works and amazing works for families. In addition, Jerry directed for the Portland Opera the world premiere of two works, never paired together before, by David Lang: The Difficulty of Crossing a Field and The Little Match Girl Passion (“Brilliant”). More is to come, but is only possible with your support. If you donated before, this is the time to invest in Imago’s future by increasing your contribution, as the challenges to the arts are greater than ever. We want to continue bringing you the most innovative and fun shows in town, but we can’t do it without you. We look forward to partnering with you to bring world-class theatre to Portlanders and to the world! Carol Triffle and Jerry Mouawad Artistic Co-Directors

IMAGO’S FROGZ | 5

A grimy engine room of a steamship becomes an enchanted theatrical playground where Beauty and the Beast comes to life with puppetry, shadow theatre, a multitude of effects, song, drama and comedy. Imago’s long-awaited spectacle will dazzle your eyes, enchant your heart and intrigue your imagination. A spectacle like no other. A story-within-astory-within-a-ship. SEE WHAT CRITICS ARE SAYING “Populated with 100 astonishingly detailed automata, puppets and other dazzling non-digital effects... a nonstop eye-popper. After several years in the making, Imago Theatre’s tricky, visionary new take on Beauty and the Beast arrived this past weekend. And what a landing. It’s all wow factor. ..” Lee Williams, The Oregonian “A triumph! A beauty of a Beauty… Imago’s La Belle is a creature of a rare and wonderful sort, a show you may well want to see over and over again, both to marvel at its graceful mechanics and to soak in its symbolic resonances about the human, animal and spiritual in us all…. with a tone that’s often whimsical but never cutesy, finding that sweet spot of family entertainment that’s really for the adults, even if the kids are so enthralled that they won’t notice. .” Marty Hughley, Oregon Arts Watch PUPPETRY, SHADOW THEATRE, AMAZING EFFECTS - A DAZZLING IMAGO SPECTACLE

“Should be at the top of your holiday to-do list! Creative! Engaging! I loved the story, theatrics, and its comedic charm… ” Debbie Tofte, PDX Parent “Masterpiece..Alluring!.. a complexity that engages adults but just the sort of magic and suspended reality that appeals to little ones. A story synopsis would not do this production justice; in fact, you could walk into the theater knowing nothing about Sam, Rose or Beauty and the Beast and find yourself instantly enchanted. Vadala and Davis expertly command the stage, theater and your attention with every word and movement, drawing you into their world aboard La Belle and then into the fairy tale land of Belle and Beast, and the intricacy of moving set pieces and elegant puppets are a continual feast for the eyes.... Karel Chan, NW Kids Magazine “Triffle and Mouawad have outdone themselves with this production… And it all works together to perfection… a masterpiece …. raised to an infinite degree. A delicious feast for the eyes and ears and nourishing fodder for the soul… a cornucopia of sights and sounds that burrow through the hard shell of adulthood to the child-like wonder of innocence and imagination, too long buried. The creators of the music and songs, the sound designer, and all the many designers/builders of the set, costumes, lighting and, of course, the puppets, are to be highly commended. This is a work of Art, make no mistake about it…” Dennis Sparks, All Things Performing Arts TICKETS: Tickets 503.231.9581or TicketsWest.com 503.224.8499 $17.50 Kids, $29.50 Youth/Senior $37.50 Adults Recommended for ages 4 and older.
