Message from the Artistic Director

Can’t pick a

As the world around us seems to become more and more serious, we decided the big theme for next season would be A SEASON OF FUN. Here are some FUN facts about this FUNNY, FUN-FILLED SEASON OF FUN!

favorite?

Ella Enchanted was co-commissioned by First Stage Children’s Theatre (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) and Adventure Stage (Glenn Echo, Maryland). The author, Gail Carson Levine, had strong approvals in place during the playwriting process to make sure the script accurately reflected the book. The result is a delightful musical retelling of this Newbery Honors Classic. Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience will warm the heart of anyone who has felt the undeniable urge to express themselves regardless of the consequences. When Wilbur tries on a hat for the very first time, the joy is overwhelming. Despite his colony’s strict rules about never wearing clothes, he is true to himself and changes his community. And this musical is so fun and funny! When I saw Seattle Children’s Theatre’s production, the crowd of young people went crazy over Wilbur’s rockin’ musical journey!

Photo: PDX Jazz

The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors made me laugh out loud as I read it at Powell’s Books. Several children were looking at me with curious amusement as I thumbed through it in the Rose Room. The title alone excited me. This is a story for the stage! Get ready for a Laughapalooza!

You support the arts. You want to help support the arts community as a whole.

Jason and the Argonauts is a first for OCT, an international collaboration! Visible Fictions of Glasgow, Scotland initially created this fast-paced retelling of a classic tale of adventure. Douglas Irvine, the Artistic Director of Visible Fictions, will co-direct with OCT’s Associate Artistic Director, Marcella Crowson. Spoiler alert: some characters are portrayed by action figures! Diary of a Worm, a Spider, and a Fly was commissioned by OCT for the 2010–2011 season. Since then, it has been produced nationally 25 times, including two major tours! I love this musical. The lives of these bugs reflect the stages that many young people in our audience are going through. Your child will love and identify with these delightful critters! I can’t wait to get started, and we hope you will join us!

You could research, budget, write 100 checks to as many different groups. . . . . . Or, you can give to Work for Art.

PORTLAND’5 CENTERS FOR THE ARTS

Founded in 1988, Oregon Children’s Theatre (OCT) is Oregon’s largest nonprofit professional children’s theater company. OCT’s mission is to create exceptional theater experiences that transform lives. OCT annually reaches over 120,000 children, parents, and educators from more than 18 Oregon and four Washington counties. OCT offers a yearround Acting Academy for students ages 3–18 and the unique Young Professionals mentoring program. The company also offers a range of services to schools and the community, including teacher professional development, resource guides and suggested lesson plans, Loud & Clear (a public speaking workshop), an extensive outreach program, and student internship and apprenticeship opportunities. Under the shared vision of healthier kids and communities, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and OCT are delivering free Educational Theatre Programs to schools and community organizations in Oregon and SW Washington. This innovative collaboration helps catalyze healthy life choices. Through free touring productions, residencies, workshops and after-school programs, the Educational Theatre Program has served over 300,000 students since its inception in 2006. Oregon Children’s Theatre is a resident company of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts and a member of Theatre Communications Group, Travel Portland, and ASSITEJ, the international children’s theater association.

Music Theatre International (MTI) is one of the world’s leading theatrical licensing agencies, granting theatres from around the world the rights to perform the greatest selection of musicals from Broadway and beyond. Founded in 1952 by composer Frank Loesser, and orchestrator Don Walker, MTI is a driving force in advancing musical theatre as a vibrant and engaging art form. MTI works directly with the composers, lyricists and book writers of these musicals to provide official scripts, musical materials and dynamic theatrical resources to over 70,000 professional, community and school theatres in the US and in over 60 countries worldwide. MTI is particularly dedicated to educational theatre, and has created special collections to meet the needs of various types of performers and audiences. MTI’s Broadway Junior™ shows are 30- and 60-minute musicals for performance by elementary and middle school-aged performers, while MTI’s School Editions are musicals annotated for performance by high school students. MTI maintains its global headquarters in New York City with additional offices in London (MTI Europe) and Melbourne (MTI Australasia).

These scales were used to weigh gold, a precious metal found in Oregon. In the 1800s many people, including Chinese immigrants, came to Oregon in search of gold. The gold was placed on one side of the scale, while the weights were placed on the other. The weight of the gold was measured when the scales were balanced. Artifact and Image Courtesy of the Southern Oregon Historical Society. 18

This artifact and fun activities are in History Hub, the first exhibit designed for kids at the Oregon Historical Society.
