LETTER FROM THE SCHOOL DIRECTOR

Oregon Ballet Theatre would like to express our sincere thanks to our most generous sponsors.

Photo by Jim Thomson.

THANK YOU! Dear Oregon Ballet Theatre School family and friends, we are here at the culmination of a brilliant year of dance training — “ON STAGE!” This year’s per formance highlights George Balanchine’s ballet Serenade with music by Tchaikovsky. Staged by Balanchine Trust’s répétiteur, Zippora Karz, OBT School has been granted permission to perform the full-length ballet. Glazunov’s beautiful score to Raymonda Etudes makes for a faculty masterpiece. And this year, we welcome back what some students have described as a “rite of passage” within OBT School, Jerome Robbins’ Circus Polka with music by Stravinsky. You will also experience Nacho Duato’s Rassemblement duet, plus exciting new and traditional works. Thank you for entrusting your child’s dance education to the people who make up the staff of OBT School. Your children are involved in a fully professional program, supported by an amazing staff in school administration, faculty, pianists, production, wardrobe, artistic, marketing, business, development, board members, and volunteers. I am so proud of the progress made by our students and humbled by the dedication I witness daily by the staff who nurture them. Most of all, I think of the sacrifices made by my own family to help me achieve my dreams, and recognize the contribution of our OBT School families in belief of your children. We wish those students and dancers who are graduating from OBT School this year all the success and joy they have worked so hard to make possible. Some of our School and OBT2 graduates will be moving on to professional ballet companies, trainee programs, and college programs. We also congratulate OBT2 dancers who have graduated with college degrees this year and applaud those who are dedicated to continuing education while pursuing their dance careers.

Each level presents a piece of choreography created especially for this performance by one of the school’s faculty members. Raymonda Etudes presents a dancer’s development and progression levelby-level as they move through the school.

Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato created Rassemblement — which means “gathering” — in 1990 for the Cullberg Ballet in Sweden. The work is inspired by and set to the songs of Haitian artist Toto Bissainthé. The songs are sung in Creole. The audience should have little concern about not understanding the meaning of the lyrics, but instead pay attention to the dancing and the way in which the movements carry the rhythm and emotion of the music with undulating torsos, deeply bent knees, flexed and pointed bare feet, and arms that punch toward the earth and flick to the sky.

LIGHTING DESIGN: Nicolás Fischtel (as adapted by Michael Mazzola) WORLD PREMIERE: February 27, 1990; Cullberg Ballet; Hjalmar Bergman Theater; Örebro, Sweden

Commenting on the songs and the ballet, musician Toto Bissainthé said, “These songs are mostly slaves’ songs from the Voodoo cult. They express the daily life of the slaves, their longing for Africa, not as a geographical reality, but as a mythical land of freedom. They express their resistance and their refusal: resistance against the colonial, refusal of his politics, his religion, his culture, and his language. ...Rassemblement is a creation which gradually, through the liberating powers of music and dance, proves to be an impressive, thrilling, and audience-affecting human rights appeal.”

For years, Phillip Carman choreographed dances to popular American music from Cole Porter, Glenn Miller, Willie Nelson, and especially George Gershwin. “I enjoy the magic entertainment value provided in the romantic lyrics and the lush melodies — all with a touch of nostalgia,” he said. These sections of By George have been revived for OBT2 from a ballet originally created for The Maryland Ballet using these wonderful orchestrations of the Gershwin songbook. The music is very danceable and the dancers always show their joy of movement in their highly energetic performances.

Oceans & Pearls Variation from The Little Humpbacked Horse CHOREOGRAPHY: Arthur Saint-Léon MUSIC: Cesare Pugni STAGED BY: Marion Tonner LIGHTING DESIGN: Michael Mazzola WORLD PREMIERE: December 15, 1864; Imperial

Based on the famous Russian fairy tale, The Little Humpbacked Horse tells of the adventures of the young Ivanushka, who is granted a new friend in the form of a magical little humpbacked horse. When Ivanushka is brought before the Khan, he is set seemingly impossible tasks, but with the help of the Little Humpbacked Horse, he completes each task successfully. One of the tasks is the abduction of the beautiful Tsar Maiden, whom the Khan wishes to marry. However, the Tsar Maiden prefers the young Ivanushka to the old Khan and devises a clever scheme to stop the wedding. With the help of the Little Humpbacked Horse, Ivanushka outwits the Khan yet again, wins the hand of the Tsar Maiden and becomes the new Tsar. The ballet became an important milestone in the development of Russian ballet. It was the first ballet based on a Russian story. —Petipa Society; Wikipedia; Russian Ballet

Belonging CHOREOGRAPHY: Matthew Pawlicki-Sinclair MUSIC: Nicholas Robert Thayer LIGHTING DESIGN: Michael Mazzola WORLD PREMIERE: March 2, 2019; OBT2;

Grants Pass Performing Arts Center; Grants Pass, Oregon

Belonging is a piece created expressly for OBT2 this year, inspired by the nature of the program and the characteristics of the company members and the unique situation they’re in at this pivotal time in their lives and careers. The piece was intended to not only give the dancers an opportunity to showcase their technique and skills, but use them as a form of expression in order to cultivate their storytelling abilities and develop further as artists. While they were given a loose narrative about the loneliness we can experience and the human need to belong and our desire to connect, they were also encouraged to look within themselves to bring their own stories to the piece. The result is a demonstration of the compassion, generosity, and support we all seek in others throughout our lives. —Matthew Pawlicki-Sinclair

Russian Ballet; Imperial Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre; St. Petersburg, Russia

OBT SCHOOL PREMIERE: June 15, 2019; Oregon Ballet Theatre School; Newmark Theatre; Portland, Oregon

The Kingdom of the Shades is from Act 3 of La Bayadère. Set in legendary India, La Bayadère tells the story of the doomed love between the noble warrior, Solor, and the beautiful temple dancer, Nikiya, who is murdered by her jealous rival, Gamzatti. In the aftermath, Solor’s grief brings him to the heavenly realm of the Kingdom of the Shades in an opium-induced dream, where his beloved appears among the many shades and tenderly forgives him for his betrayal. However, Gamzatti’s murderous triumph is short-lived as her actions provoke the wrath of the gods. In retaliation, the gods destroy the temple, killing all who are responsible for Nikiya’s death, and Nikiya is reunited with her beloved Solor beyond the reach of man. —Pepita Society; The Houston Chronicle

TODAY’S PROGRAM Circus Polka CHOREOGRAPHY: Jerome Robbins MUSIC: Igor Stravinsky, “Circus Polka” STAGED BY: Kembe Adam, Elise Legere, Olivia Pyne LIGHTING DESIGN: Michael Mazzola WORLD PREMIERE: June 21, 1972; New York City

Ballet; Stravinsky Festival; New York State Theatre; New York City, New York

OBT SCHOOL PREMIERE: May 18, 2004; Oregon Ballet Theatre School; Newmark Theatre; Portland, Oregon Performed by permission of The Robbins Rights Trust. Used by arrangement with European American Music Distributors Company, sole U.S. and Canadian agent for Schott Music GmbH & Co. KG, Mainz, Germany, publisher and copyright owner.

In 1942, George Balanchine received a commission from Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus to choreograph a polka for elephants. Balanchine called Igor Stravinsky and asked him to compose the piece. Stravinsky asked for whom the music was to be composed. “Elephants,” replied Balanchine. “How old?” asked Stravinsky. “Young.” “If they are very young, I will do it,” said the composer. Apparently, he was concerned that older elephants might be startled by the unusual rhythms and harmonies of the music, officially titled Circus Polka for Wind Symphony. Using a 2/4 meter, the music sometimes comically lurches like an elephant out of step. The orchestration — with prominence given to the bass drum, cymbals, and heavy brass — evokes a circus environment. For the Stravinsky Festival in 1972, Jerome Robbins used the music for his Circus Polka, a showpiece for 48 students from The School of American Ballet, and cast himself as the Ringmaster. At the close of the piece, the children form the initials “I.S.,” in honor of the composer; since that time, the ballet has paid tribute to others in the same way. —New York City Ballet

Adelphi Theatre, New York City, New York

OBT SCHOOL PREMIERE: April 11, 2008;

Newmark Theatre; Portland, Oregon

The performance of Serenade, a Balanchine® Ballet, is presented by arrangement with The George Balanchine Trust and has been produced in accordance with the Balanchine Style® and Balanchine Technique® Service standards established and provided by the Trust.

The first performance of Serenade was on June 10, 1934, by students of The School of American Ballet, at Felix Warburg’s estate, White Plains, New York. Serenade is a milestone in the history of dance. It is the first original ballet that George Balanchine created in America and is one of the signature works of New York City Ballet’s repertory. The ballet is performed by 28 dancers in blue costumes in front of a blue background. Originating it as a lesson in stage technique, Balanchine worked unexpected rehearsal events into the choreography. When one student fell, he incorporated it. Another day, a student arrived late, and this too became part of the ballet. After its initial presentation, Serenade was reworked several times. In its present form there are four movements — “Sonatina,” “Waltz,” “Russian Dance,” and “Elegy.” The last two movements reverse the order of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s score, ending the ballet on a note of sadness. Balanchine had a special affinity for Tchaikovsky. “In everything that I did to Tchaikovsky’s music,” he told an interviewer, “I sensed his help. It wasn’t real conversation. But when I was working and saw that something was coming of it, I felt that it was Tchaikovsky who had helped me.” — The George Balanchine Trust

A rare dancer whose career spanned multiple disciplines, Kevin Irving began dancing with jazz classes in his hometown dance school (Long Island, New York), before joining the school and training ensemble of Alvin Ailey — an experience that impacted him deeply. From 1982–1985, he danced with The Elisa Monte Dance Company of New York, a company often referred to as “post-modern” but, at 24, he took a sharp turn toward classical dance, and joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montréal. Promoted to soloist and principal, Irving became a well-known figure wherever LGBC performed, excelling in classical, neoclassical, and contemporary roles – including roles and ballets created by LGBC’s resident choreographer James Kudelka. In 1993, Irving joined Twyla Tharp Dance, touring the U.S. and Europe with the acclaimed choreographer, including performances at L’Opéra de Paris and the PBS filming of Tharp’s much-lauded ballet In the Upper Room. From 1994–2002, Irving was ballet master and associate director with Nacho Duato’s Compañía Nacional de Danza in Madrid. From 2002–2007, he was artistic director of The Göteborg Ballet in Sweden. The company, during Irving’s tenure, was named the most important dance company in Sweden in Ballet International’s critic poll. From 2007–2013, Irving was a frequent guest ballet master with The Royal Danish Ballet where he staged and rehearsed works by Ji í Kylián, George Balanchine, and Jerome Robbins. He has also been a guest teacher with numerous companies and schools in the U.S. and abroad for over 20 years. Additionally, he staged ballets by Nacho Duato and Nicolo Fonte for companies such as The Royal Ballet Covent Garden, Nederlands Dans Theater, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Lyon Opera Ballet, and The Australian Ballet, to name just a few.

In the U.S., Irving became associate director at Morphoses (formerly The Wheeldon Company) from 2011–2012, coordinating special initiatives aimed at defining the company’s unique profile in the dance world. In 2010, he founded I-DANCE (Inspiring Dance: American Nations’ Choreographic Exchange), a nonprofit that sends teachers and choreographers to dance communities in Central and South America. Irving was named artistic director of Oregon Ballet Theatre in July 2013. Photo by Michael Slobodian.

WHAT WOULD YOU BRING WITH YOU? LOOK CLOSELY!

This is a Chinese suitcase. Is it different from a suitcase you have seen? How? Why is this suitcase pointed? (answer at bottom)

It can be scary to leave your home and move to another place, especially if you don’t speak the language in the new place. Many immigrants bring clothing and other belongings to remind them of home. If you left your home to move to a faraway place, what would you bring? Make sure it fits in a suitcase!

Write your answer here:

The first Chinese immigrants (people from another country) came to Oregon in 1850 — almost 200 years ago. At first, most worked as miners and storekeepers. Later, some common jobs were canning fish, cooking, logging, and building railroads.

Answer: This suitcase was specially built to hold a conical hat (a pointed hat), which many Chinese immigrants wore.

WE’RE 1 BECAUSE THEY’RE 1.

OREGON’S TOP-RANKED CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL. Children are our greatest gift. At Doernbecher, we built a hospital around that belief. It’s why we have more specialists than anyone else in the state. And we’re the only children’s hospital in Oregon to rank among the best in the country.
