WELCOME TO OREGON CHILDREN’S THEATRE! Welcome to Pete the Cat: The Musical. I love Pete and have been trying to get him on our stage for four years. But it’s been quite a journey to actually make it happen! In November of 2014, I emailed the literary agent representing Pete the Cat’s creators about adapting it for the stage. After several attempts I finally got a firm, “NO.” I still had hopes of, “maybe someday.” In October 2015, I learned that The Rose Theatre in Omaha was producing a world premiere production of, wait for it, Pete the Cat: The Musical. I immediately contacted the company and began my second journey for the rights. I contacted the playwright and was referred to the lawyer who represents the Pete books. After several email chains and a conference call I received another firm, “NO,” because Theatreworks USA had acquired exclusive rights to adapt the books. In March 2017, we were all set to announce our 2017–2018 season, so I began my search for the 2018–2019 season. Because I am a pest, I asked again about the possibility of adapting Pete the Cat. This time, I was told I may be able to

license the Theatreworks USA musical adaptation, and was connected with the Artistic Director of that company, Ken Arthur. I spoke with Ken and he said, “YES!” I was celebrating like crazy, doing my own personal happy dance, and then I had another thought: “I haven’t received a contract for the January 2018 slot yet, why not ask if we can do it in the 2017–2018 season?” I asked, Ken said, “YES,” again, and I had a contract in two days. Our staff was able to make the change and I’m happy to welcome you all here today! Finding great shows for you, our audience, and the quests for great stories is a challenging adventure and a journey filled with twists and turns. I hope you love Pete the Cat: The Musical as much as I do. Happy 2018!

PORTLAND’5 CENTERS FOR THE ARTS

Founded in 1988, Oregon Children’s Theatre (OCT) is Oregon’s largest nonprofit professional children’s theater company. OCT’s mission is to create exceptional theater experiences that transform lives. OCT annually reaches over 120,000 children, parents, and educators from more than 18 Oregon and four Washington counties. OCT offers a yearround Acting Academy for students ages 3–18 and the unique Young Professionals mentoring program. The company also offers a range of services to schools and the community, including teacher professional development, resource guides and suggested lesson plans, Loud & Clear (a public speaking workshop), an extensive outreach program, and student internship and apprenticeship opportunities. Under the shared vision of healthier kids and communities, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and OCT are delivering free Educational Theatre Programs to schools and community organizations in Oregon and SW Washington. This innovative collaboration helps catalyze healthy life choices. Through free touring productions, residencies, workshops and after-school programs, the Educational Theatre Program has served over 300,000 students since its inception in 2006. Oregon Children’s Theatre is a resident company of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts and a member of Theatre Communications Group, Travel Portland, and ASSITEJ, the international children’s theater association.
