CROWNS | CAST ITHICA TELL (WANDA/OSHUN)

Ithica is delighted for another go round at Portland Playhouse, where she was last seen in How We Got On. Other roles include: Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar (PAMTA Award); Othello in Othello; Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. Ithica has appeared on Grimm, The Librarians, The Benefits of Gusbandry, and Life After First Failure. Big love and thanks to sister Isha for the “acting bug,” and to Ethan, for bringing the perfect balance to her life with his love.

JULANA TORRES (JEANETTE/YEMAYA)

Julana Torres is a Portland local with an extensive career in dance, music, and theatre. She has recently returned to the stage after a long hiatus of teaching with Portland Public Schools where she established the full time dance program for Franklin High School. Since returning, she has been seen in Cop Out (Red Door Project); Between Riverside and Crazy (Artist Repertory); Water by the Spoonful (Profile Theatre); 26 Miles (Profile Theatre); Óye Oyá (Milagro Theatre); and Cuba Libre (Artist Repertory). In 2017 she received a Drammy nomination for Best Actress in a play for her work in Water by the Spoonful. She recently filmed feature film Losing Addison starring Sherilyn Fenn, and can also be seen performing as the lead singer for popular Latin Jazz orchestra The Bobby Torres Ensemble.

SHALANDA SIMS (VELMA/OYA)

Shalanda is making her Portland Playhouse debut in Crowns. Last seen in The Color Purple at Portland Center Stage at The Armory. Favorite credits include Dreamgirls at The Armory, The Pirates of Penzance with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival at Portland Opera, and Gospel Christmas at Oregon Symphony. Shalanda studied theater at University of Portland,

English at Portland State University, is the author of Night Rhythms; The Hooded Quilt Series, Dramatist Guild, American Guild of Musical Artists member and has written several plays including Church Girls, Vanport, Too Good To Be True, FullTime Woman and Who I Am Celebrating Me. Some of her film and television credits include The Hunted (Paramount), Extraordinary Measures (CBS Films), Leverage (TNT), Secrets of Successful Dating (Otter Creek), Harvest House (Harvest House) and Faith (Camp Productions). Kelli is incredibly humbled to lead this production of Crowns at Portland Playhouse. She was last seen in Dreamgirls with Stumptown Stages. MARILYN KELLER (MOTHER SHAW/OBATALA)

After 35 years in a career that has spanned Top 40 band vocalist, Jazz, Ragtime, Dixieland, R&B, blues and gospel, Marilyn was inducted into the Jazz Society of Oregon’s Hall of Fame in 2016. KRISTIN ROBINSON (MABEL/SHANGO)

Portland native Kristin Robinson has played roles from Alma Hix in Clackamas Rep’s The Music Man to Bessie Smith working in local NW repertory theatres. Most recently, she played Lorrell Robinson in Stumptown Stages’ Dreamgirls last fall and was awarded an OTAS award for her role as Deloris Van Cartier in Lakewood Theatre’s 2018 production of Sister Act. She began her acting training here in NE Portland at Jefferson High School and has been singing in local choirs and ensembles since grade school. After high school, she studied theatre at Mills College in Oakland, CA and UC Berkeley. Upon her return to Oregon she continued her studies at Portland State University. She resides here in the PNW where she works as a licensed massage therapist.

ANDRE’ NEAL (MAN/ELEGBA)

Andre’ is an actor, singer, dancer, writer and director who is known for his high energy performances. Andre’ started his career at the behest of his amazing mother, Charlotte, whom he lost Christmas 2016. This diversely talented entertainer first started acting at the age of 5 when he was cast for a Dr. Pepper commercial. Originally from Florida, he has been blessed to live and work in Atlanta, New York and Houston, Texas. Being humble and respectful is one of the most important things he has learned in life as well as “Always work at work.” Some of his credits are Once on this Island, Spunk, A Raisin in the Sun, Just So Stories, Soulful Christmas, Trav’len, Soulful Sounds of Christmas, Mahalia, When Harlem was Envoged, Just A Little Love, and many more. Andre’ would like to thank everyone involved with this amazing piece of work as well as everyone that has supported him over the years. God has truly been good to him.

CROWNS | CAST & CREATIVE TEAM NETTY MCKENZIE (ENSEMBLE/UNDERSTUDY-YOLANDA)

Netty is a performer born and raised in Portland, Oregon. She is also a Portland Playhouse Apprentice for the 2018–2019 season. When she is not on stage, she runs a non-profit organization called the Portland Prince/Princess program which serves adolescents in her community. Netty is ecstatic to be a part of Crowns which possesses so much rich culture and history. She would like to thank her family and friends for their support in all her endeavors. She would also like to give praise to her grandmother who inspires her every day.

DELPHON CURTIS, JR. (ENSEMBLE/UNDERSTUDY-MAN)

Delphon “DJ” Curtis is honored to be a part of Portland Playhouse’s production of Crowns. He has been seen in A Christmas Carol as Topper, Molly, etc., and as Man 4 in Sides the Musical in this year’s Fertile Ground Festival. DJ is the Gold Medalist for best overall singer in the Ultimate Modeling and Talent Competition in New York. He also had the opportunity to sing at New York Fashion Week. He is so grateful for everyone who took part in the process of this show and sends love to the cast, crew, and production team.

REGINA TAYLOR (PLAYWRIGHT)

Regina has received four Helen Hayes Awards including Best Director. Ms. Taylor was honored as the 2017 Denzel Washington Endowed Chair in theater at Fordham University at Lincoln Center where she directed her play Magnolia. She contributed to the Princeton and Slavery Plays at McCarter that featured work by Emily Mann, Kwame Kwei-Armah, Jackie Sibblies Drury, Nathan Alan Davis, Dipika Guha, and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Writing credits include: Trinity River Plays (Edgerton Award); Drowning Crow (Broadway); stop. reset. (Signature Theater Residency 5). Ms. Taylor is an Artistic Associate at Goodman Theatre and one of its most produced playwrights. Acting credits include: first African American Juliet on Broadway in Romeo and Juliet (Belasco Theater), first African American lead in Masterpiece Theater’s Cora Unashamed. Ms. Taylor received a Golden Globe Award for Best Lead Performance for the TV Series I’ll Fly Away. Movies include: Clockers, Courage Under Fire, and Lean on Me.

MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM (ADAPTATION) Michael Cunningham is a novelist, screenwriter, and educator. His novel The Hours received the PEN/Faulkner Award, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Book Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1999. He has taught at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and at Brooklyn College. He is currently senior lecturer of creative writing at Yale University.

CRAIG MARBERRY (ADAPTATION)

Craig Marberry is the writer of Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats and Spirit of Harlem: A Portrait of America’s Most Exciting Neighborhood, both collaborations with photographer Michael Cunningham. A graduate of Morehouse College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Marberry has written for the Washington Post and Essence magazine. His collection of oral histories in Crowns has been adapted into an award- winning play written by Regina Taylor. Marberry, a Chicago native, lives in Greensboro, North Carolina.

PATDRO HARRIS (DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER)

Patdro is nationally and internationally recognized and respected by colleagues, critics, and fans. The Washington Post hails him as a “superb choreographer.” The New York Times applauds his artistry as “praiseworthy.” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution enthusiastically commends his work as “dynamic … brilliant…solid season after season.” And the Houston Chronicle says “...excellent and energizing direction and stunning choreography makes the show an absolute joy to experience.” He has directed at distinguished theaters such as The Alliance Theater, Sacramento Theatre Company, Round House Theater, Liberty Theater Cultural Center, San Diego Repertory Theater Company, Penumbra Theater, Tuskegee Repertory Theater, Ensemble Theater, Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theater Company, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Syracuse Stage, Theatrical Outfit, Connecticut Repertory Theater, The Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Howard University, Syracuse University, Florida A&M University & the University of Northern Colorado. He also served as choreographer, artistic consultant, and movement director with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, The Kennedy Center, Studio Theatre D.C., City Theatre of Pittsburgh, Minneapolis Mixed Blood Theatre,

Jomandi Productions, The National Black Theatre Festival, Guthrie Theater, The National Black Arts Festival, Portland Center Stage, and Broadway’s Royal Theatre. Patdro has traveled the world as choreographer and lead dancer for the incomparable Stevie Wonder. He has worked with such artists as The SOS Band, TC Carson, Daryl Coley, Yolanda Adams, and India Arie. His talents were also showcased as Choreographer and Movement Specialist in Toni Morrison’s world premiere opera, Margaret Garner. He choreographed the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit A Raisin in the Sun starring Sean Combs and Phylicia Rashad. Mr. Harris attended Alabama State University. In his current home of Atlanta, Georgia, he has served on many arts committees including the Georgia Council for the Arts and the Advisory Dance Panel for the Bureau of Cultural Affairs. He holds to his credit the 1996 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Choreography and has been honored with a nomination for the same award for Best Supporting Actor. He also received a 2002 Drammy Award for Best Choreography and the 2007 Dance Ministry Magazine’s Trailblazer Award for Dance Choreographer of the year. He has received a 2009, 2010, 2011, & 2016 Giorgee Award for Best Director and Best Show of the Year. In 2009 he received Atlanta’s top theatre award, The Suzi Bass Award for Outstanding Choreography, and in 2013 he won the Suzi for Outstanding Director of a Play.

CHIKA KABA MA’ATUNDE (MUSIC DIRECTOR)

Chika Kaba Ma’atunde, formally Carlton Leake, was a student of Dr. Lulah Hedgeman (PBUH) and Prof. Merle Gartrell (PBUH). Chika began his professional career at the age 14 when he played bass guitar for Erma Clanton’s theatrical production An Evening of Soul. During his career, he has assumed the role of a actor/ singer, musician and/or musical director for many shows including, Dreamgirls, The Wiz, West Side Story, Spunk, Sophisticated Ladies, Blues in the Night, Cabaret, In The Heights, Simply Simone, Ain’t Mis’Behavin and Five Guys Named Moe. Chika’s career highlights include his work as guest composer for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra’s Christmas Concert (Columbus, GA), where four compositions from his Christmas Cantata, The Savior Has Come, thrilled audiences in 2001. Chika composed the original score for Blair Underwood’s


CROWNS | CREATIVE TEAM movie short The Second Coming. His own musicals (Music, Lyrics and Book) include the Vietnam War soldier story Two Wars, The Twelve Ways of Christmas, Nkosazana: The African Cinderella, Djembe and the Forest of Christmas Forgotten, Journey of the Son, and Golden Fruit, A musical adaptation of the children’s story The Pied Piper. Recently, Chika took a journey back to his childhood as he composed the music to Sesame Street’s “T is for Train” segment.

DAVID LEVINE (STAGE MANAGER)

David is a lifelong Portlander and former teacher who comes from a long line of educators-turned-actors, dating back to 1950’s summer camp in the Catskills. Recent stage manager credits include Fences, A Christmas Carol, and No Candy at Portland Playhouse; The Mermaid Hour at Milagro; and Cop Out with The August Wilson Red Door Project. He’s also been in the same band since pre-internet days, now, however, findable at chipanddrifty.com.

WANDA WALDEN (COSTUME DESIGNER)

Wanda has costumed plays for over thirty years with an extensive body of work. Portland Playhouse: How I Learned What I Learned; Artist Repertory: It’s A Wonderful Life: Radio Play, Skeleton Crew, An Octoroon, We are Proud to Present; Passin Art: No Play, Black Nativity, Two Trains Running, Repulsing the Monkey, Gospel of Love and Kindness. Oregon Children’s Theatre: In this Corner, Cassius Clay; Portland Actors Conservatory: Othello Remix, All My Sons, Marisol; Profile Theatre: Fires In The Mirror, The Secretaries; Vanport Mosaic: Left Hook, Hercules Didn’t Wade in the Water, American Summer Squash, Cottonwood in the Flood. Wanda writes historical educ-tainment scripts. She is the artist for Susan G. Komen Worship in Pink Breast Cancer Awareness for Oregon and SW Washington. Wanda is the Artistic Director of Retro-Spect Production A Theatrical Modeling Company.

DANIEL MEEKER (SCENIC & LIGHTING DESIGNER)

Crowns is the 25th show Dan has designed for the Portland Playhouse. Recent Playhouse productions include: set and lighting for Wakey Wakey, Fences, Scarlet, and The Language Archive. In Portland, numerous productions with Portland Center Stage, Portland Opera, Artists Repertory Theater, Oregon Children’s Theater, CoHo, and

Profile. Every August Daniel is the lighting director for the Pickathon Festival. He is a graduate of Ithaca College and The Yale School of Drama, and a member of United Scenic Artists.

MATT WIENS (SOUND DESIGNER)

Matt is a Portland-based composer and sound designer. Recent credits include season opener Wakey Wakey at Portland Playhouse, and In The Wake with Profile Theater. He holds a BA in Theater from Goshen College and a MFA in Music Technology from NYU.

SARA LUDEMAN (CO-PROPERTIES DESIGNER)

Sara is a props and costume designer based in Portland, Oregon. Credits include Props Design: No Candy Portland Playhouse 2019, Wakey, Wakey Portland Playhouse 2018, Peter and The Starcatcher Portland Playhouse 2016, and Eyes for Consuela Profile Theater 2014. Costume Design: El Muerto Vagabondo Milagro 2016, Passion Play Shaking the Tree 2015, Under the Influence Outwright Festival 2015, American Night Milagro 2015, and True West Profile Theater 2014.

ALEX MEYER (CO-PROPERTIES DESIGNER)

A native of South Dakota, Alex is happy to feel at home in the Portland theatre scene. Alex found the theatre as a student, and is pursuing a career in scenic design. He shares his love for theatre with his love for the arts, and is an active painter and printmaker. Alex received his B.A. in art and theatre from Augustana University of Sioux Falls, SD, and is especially grateful for his professors’ guidance and creative spirits. He’s most recently worked as Properties Master and guest Scenic Designer at Okoboji Summer Theatre of Okoboji, IA, and as has previously been employed at the Black Hills Playhouse of Custer, SD, and the Dakota Academy of Performing Arts of Sioux Falls, SD. designbyalexmeyer.com

ROB SMITH (PERCUSSIONIST)

Originally from Washington DC, Rob has been drumming since the age of 12 and has performed in countless scenarios since. As well as drumming, Rob has worked in arts education for over 20 years with a focus on social justice and human rights, motivated by the belief that everyone deserves equal and affordable access to the arts. Rob doubles as the Director of Community Engagement for PHAME, a Portland arts organization serving adults living with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

BRANDON MORAYO (ARTIST)

Visual expression has always been a passion for Brandon Morayo. In college he studied color theory and graphical applications in marketing. After graduating from Troy University, Brandon began to focus on becoming a full time professional creative. His expressive use of organic shape and color were further explored through various design mediums such as corporate branding and animation. In 2015, Brandon relocated to Birmingham, Alabama, where he balanced the roll of creative director and freelance artist. Birmingham also gave him the opportunity to collaborate with numerous local artists and businesses. Two years later he moved Portland, Oregon, where he currently resides. REINA SOLUNAYA (ASSISTANT DIRECTOR)

This is Reina’s third production working as Assistant Director at Portland Playhouse. She is a director, editor, and photographer. A graduate of UCLA’s MFA Film Directing program, she has worked in the film industry in a variety of positions and currently focuses on freelance filmmaking and teaching media arts. Her work has been
