AUGUST WILSON (Playwright) (April 27, 1945–October 2, 2005)

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR My relationship with the Wilson oeuvre is largely due to my friendship with the playwright as well as my role as founding artistic director of Penumbra Theatre Company in Saint Paul, Minnesota. As artistic director, I produced Mr. Wilson’s first professional production—Black Bart and the Sacred Hills in 1982. Penumbra Theatre continues to hold the record for having produced more of his work than any theater in the world. Mr. Wilson was a member of Penumbra Theatre Company and wrote Malcolm X, a one-man show, expressly for me to perform. I’ve had the honor of bringing several of his characters to life on the stage, including Troy Maxson, Wilson’s flawed hero in Fences. My professional aesthetic, my relationship with and interpretation of history, and the manner in which I present African American comportment and culture on stage is shaped by his work. I find the spaces Wilson has engineered in this work capable of being filled by authentic African American cultural rhythms and nuance. Fences remains perhaps August Wilson’s most accessible play. Maybe it’s the structure which weaves Wilson’s tale around a single “Lear-like” figure that at once engenders deep understanding, revulsion, and identification from audiences all over the world. Please enjoy the fruits of our labor (i.e. enjoy the show!) and experience the “thunder” that is Fences. –Lou Bellamy

Wilson authored Gem of the Ocean, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Piano Lesson, Seven Guitars, Fences, Two Trains Running, Jitney, King Hedley II, and Radio Golf. These works explore the heritage and experience of AfricanAmericans, decade-by-decade, over the course of the twentieth century. His plays have been produced at regional theaters across the country and all over the world, as well as on Broadway. In 2003, Mr. Wilson made his professional stage debut in his one-man show, How I Learned What I Learned. Mr. Wilson’s works garnered many awards including Pulitzer Prizes for Fences (1987); and for The Piano Lesson (1990); a Tony Award for Fences; Great Britain’s Olivier Award for Jitney; as well as seven New York Drama Critics Circle Awards for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Fences, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, The Piano Lesson, Two Trains Running, Seven Guitars, and Jitney. Additionally, the cast recording of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom received a 1985 Grammy Award, and Mr. Wilson received a 1995 Emmy Award nomination for his screenplay adaptation of The Piano Lesson. Mr. Wilson’s early works included the one-act plays The Janitor, Recycle, The Coldest Day of the Year, Malcolm X, The Homecoming and the musical satire Black Bart and the Sacred Hills. Mr. Wilson received many fellowships and awards, including Rockefeller and Guggenheim Fellowships in Playwriting, the Whiting Writers Award, 2003 Heinz Award, was awarded a 1999 National Humanities Medal by the President of the United States, and received numerous honorary degrees from colleges and universities, as well as the only high school diploma ever issued by the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. He was an alumnus of New Dramatists, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a 1995 inductee into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and on October 16, 2005, Broadway renamed the theater located at 245 West 52nd Street—The August Wilson Theatre. Mr. Wilson was born and raised in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and lived in Seattle, Washington at the time of his death. He is immediately survived by his two daughters, Sakina Ansari and Azula Carmen Wilson, and his wife, Costume Designer Constanza Romero.

ANNOUNCING SEASON 11 TICKETS & SEASON SUBSCRIPTIONS ON SALE AT PORTLANDPLAYHOUSE.ORG 503.488.5822

WAKEY, WAKEY BY WILL ENO Directed by Gretchen Corbett

SEPTEMBER 26–OCTOBER 21, 2018 What are we here for? Is time a friend or an enemy? Do we all eventually end up in the same place, but take different routes to get there? This funny, moving, and thought-provoking new play [...] challenges the notion of what really matters and recognizes the importance of life’s simple pleasures. (All of which might sound dreary, but there’s a chance this will be a really good experience.) (text courtesy of Signature Theatre)

A CHRISTMAS CAROL BY CHARLES DICKENS Adaptation and Original Lyrics by Rick Lombardo Original Music by Anna Lackaff and Rick Lombardo Music Arrangements by Anna Lackaff Directed by Brian Weaver and Cristi Miles DECEMBER 1–30, 2018

Join Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghostly spirits who visit on Christmas Eve and guide the grumpy miser through a redemptive and transformative journey towards friendship and love. Hopeful, musical, and above all fun; our production has won three awards, including: BEST PLAY, BEST ENSEMBLE, and BEST DIRECTOR.

NO CANDY BY EMMA STANTON Directed by Tea Alegic

JANUARY 16–FEBRUARY 10, 2019 At the center of No Candy is a multi-generational community of Bosnian Muslim women who run a gift shop near the Srebrenica memorial. The play follows how each woman copes, both privately and publicly, with the particular trauma she experienced during the war: She dreams of Julie Andrews; She dresses drag in her father’s clothes; She sings late-night karaoke; She allows the ghost of her husband to stay a little while longer in her home. No Candy is very much about how trauma inhabits the body and shapes a community. But it is also about the persistence of humor, art, and absurdity in an unimaginable time. (text courtesy of New Play Exchange)

CROWNS BY REGINA TAYLOR March 13–April 7, 2019

When Chicago-born Yolanda is sent down South after the death of her brother, she finds strength in the tales of the wise women who surround her—and the powerful rituals connected to their dazzling hats. This jubilant musical traces the roots of Gospel through contemporary hip hop, fusing rich storytelling with abundant “hattitude” into a stirring coming-of-age tale. Crowns is a not-to-be-missed celebration of song, dance, cultural history—and glamorous headwear. (text courtesy of Goodman Theatre) BOTTOM: Photo courtesy of Goodman Theatre.
