“HE LAY STILL, HIS BLOODSHOT EYES STARING BLANKLY BEFORE HIM, AND DRIFTED INTO DREAMS OF HIS PROBLEMS... Richard Wright, The Outsider
“FROM THE SLAVE SHIP TO THE CITIZENSHIP WE FACED A LOT OF BULLSHIP”
Amiri Baraka
“WHEN I DISCOVER WHO I AM, I’LL BE FREE.” Ralph Ellison, Invisible Man
“THERE IS NO GREATER AGONY THAN BEARING AN UNTOLD STORY INSIDE YOU.”
“THE SOUL THAT IS WITHIN ME NO MAN CAN DEGRADE.”
Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
Frederick Douglass
“It’s a peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity. One ever feels his two-ness,—an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder.” –W.E.B. DuBois, The Souls of Black Folk
“I am inside someone who hates me. I look out from his eyes.” Amiri Baraka, An Agony. As Now
“MEN CAN STARVE FROM A LACK OF SELF-REALIZATION AS MUCH AS THEY CAN FROM A LACK OF BREAD.”
“
“If we forget our past, do we in some way forget ourselves?”
Richard Wright, Native Son
”
–Tanya Barfield
“I KNOW WHERE I’M GOING AND I KNOW THE TRUTH, AND I DON’T HAVE TO BE WHAT YOU WANT ME TO BE. I’M FREE TO BE WHAT I WANT.” Muhammad Ali
“To acknowledge our ancestors means we are aware that we did not make ourselves, that the line stretches all the way back, perhaps to God; or to Gods. We remember them because it is an easy thing to forget: that we are not the first to suffer, rebel, fight, love and die. The grace with which we embrace life, in spite of the pain, the sorrow, is always a measure of what has gone before. Alice Walker “...TO SEE WAS NOT TO CONTROL, THAT SELF-UNDERSTANDING WAS FAR SHORT OF SELF-MASTERY. HE WAS AFRAID OF HIMSELF.”
Richard Wright, The Outsider “YOU WANNA FLY, YOU GOT TO GIVE UP THE SHIT THAT WEIGHS YOU DOWN.” Toni Morrison P2 | PROFILE THEATRE BLUE DOOR
“PEOPLE PAY FOR WHAT THEY DO, AND STILL MORE FOR WHAT THEY HAVE ALLOWED THEMSELVES TO BECOME. AND THEY PAY FOR IT VERY SIMPLY; BY THE LIVES THEY LEAD.” James Baldwin
THE UNIQUE MISSION OF PROFILE THEATRE Profile Theatre’s mission is to produce a season of plays devoted to a single playwright, engaging with our community to explore that writer’s vision and influence on theatre and the world at large. We do this through large-scale professional productions, In Dialogue Series readings and lectures, and our vibrant education programs. The dramatists we profile have something significant to say about humankind in all its variety, complexity, humor, tragedy, anger and hope. They cast a light on the desires and demons that drive us to seek a better understanding of who we are, where we are going and why. As Profile moves into our third decade, we are excited to explore our mission by looking forward, featuring the work of contemporary playwrights who are creating the canon of tomorrow. With our 2016 season, Profile is thrilled to embark on our three year Initiative for Diversity and Inclusion. Through this initiative, we are intentionally considering playwrights whom, traditionally, our industry has not supported. We have committed to three years of presenting the work of female playwrights and/or playwrights of color. Currently, there is energized and passionate conversation happening in theatres throughout the country around the ideas of diversity and inclusion. With this initiative, Profile places itself not only at the center of that conversation, but also on the leading edge of change.
Join us for In Dialogue, our series of lectures, pre-show talks, postshow discussions and concerts, as well as community events and other exciting programming, all of which explore our featured writer’s world. Through our In Dialogue programming, we extend the event of a Profile production beyond the bounds of what is onstage, bringing the community together for exciting, provocative and inspiring experiences.

PROFILE THEATRE’S
INSIDE OUT EDUCATION PROGRAMS Partnering with our community to bring arts education to young people. THE COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL TOUR brings
professional theatre out into our community, visiting schools and programs with limited access to arts education and performing one of our main stage productions. The touring productions are presented with the original cast in full costume, with props, sound and small set pieces that enable the audience to fully engage with the world of the play. Each performance is followed by a conversation between audience members and the cast.
THE HANDS ON RESIDENCY PROGRAM was
developed to help address the lack of theatre and arts education in our local schools. The program offers both short term and extended residencies with an experienced teaching artist, to local middle and high schools. Whether it be over the course of a few hours, or over several months, students explore language and text within the context of performance. Our curriculum uses integrated learning techniques that engage the mind, body and voice while encouraging collaboration and confidence. Residencies are crafted to address the unique goals of each education partner, whether they culminate in a classroom presentation or a fully produced production with an audience. Teaching materials and scripts are selected based upon our featured playwright and the themes that lie at the heart of their body of work.
PROFILE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM is unique in its
structure and its breadth of opportunity. Ideal for college students and new graduates, an internship with Profile is entirely project based, giving our interns the opportunity to be a crucial part of the artistic and/or administrative team, while being provided with the guidance and supervision of an appropriate member of Profile’s staff. Our interns have meaningful artistic and professional experiences while building the skills to launch them into their theatre career.
