OCTOBER 5. 4:30PM Acceptance and Denial: Discourses of the Holocaust in Moroccan Newspapers. Pendleton East, Room 239. RSVP. The Department of Jewish and Middle East Studies Aomar Boum, Assistant Professor of Near Eastern and Religious Studies at the University of Arizona Aomar Boum's research revolves around the Middle East in general and North, West, and Subsaharan Africa in particular. He has published a number of articles on the history and historiography of the Jewish communities of southern Morocco, Jewish-Muslim
interfaith dialogue, representation of Jews in Moroccan museums, Jewish migration in the context of Arab nationalism and Zionism, and the Alliance Isrealite Universelle in rural Moroccan communities.
OCTOBER 5. 7PM The Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture: Farai Chideya - Provactive Author, Broadcaster, and Sociopolitical Pundit. RSVP Farai Chideya is an award-winning multimedia journalist, novelist, and host. The author of numerous books and articles on race and politics in America, she has been a correspondent for ABC News, and anchored the prime-time program Pure Oxygen on the Oxygen women's channel. In addition to
hosting NPR's News and Notes with Ed Gordon, she has contributed commentaries to CNN, Fox, MSNBC, and BET. OCTOBER 6. 5PM Beyond the Bulldozer: Rethinking the Divide between Urban Renewal and Historic Preservation in the 1960s. RVSP. Alison Isenberg brings fresh perspective to 19501970s urban planning, years when design professionals tried to remake urban renewal and offer Americans something better. Looking closely at San Francisco—its fight against “Manhattanization,” and its efforts to forge alternative development models— Isenberg explores how Bay Area urban design was immersed in the cross currents of social revolution.

Novelist Nina Revoyr and poet Christian Campbell deliver a stimulating evening as they read excerpts from their latest work. Revoyr’s novels have caused a literary stir, winning The Los Angeles Times “Best Book” Award and appearing in O, The Oprah Magazine, as one of the “Books to Watch For.” Campbell is author of Running the Dusk, which was a finalist for the Cave Canem Prize and the Forward Poetry Prize for the Best First Book in the United Kingdom.

mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father’s madness – or genius – will she inherit? An exhibition celebrating the aesthetic qualities as well as the scientific importance of botanical imagery, Global Flora features prints and illustrated books that have resulted from exploratory missions around the world. Curated by Elaine Mehalakes, Kemper Curator of Academic Programs. Pictured above: Robert John Thornton, The NightBlowing Cereus from The Temple of Flora, 1807. Double Solitaire: The Surreal Worlds of Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy. RSVP. Double Solitaire brings the work of husband and wife painters Yves Tanguy and Kay Sage together for the first time. As the exhibit explores the Surrealist work of the
two artists, the paintings provide a window into the couple’s personal lives. Pictured above: Kay Sage, Small Portrait, 1950, oil on canvas. Five Watercolors by Madame Chiang Kai-shek. RSVP. Soong May-ling, Wellesley College class of 1917, began to paint in her middle age, and quickly distinguished herself as a gifted pupil. A 1952 feature on her watercolors in Life magazine proclaimed her “aptitude far greater than that of most amateurs.” Madame Chiang donated the paintings to Wellesley College, allowing future generations of students and Davis visitors to enjoy and be inspired by her artistic work.
