FILM Makers of the Seventh Art: Film Series A festival of New Egyptian Cinema: Spring 89 and Hawi. Spring 89 (Amin, 2009) tells the story of the last days of innocence of Egyptian teenage girls Camelia and Sarah. Hawi (El Batout, 2011), released at the prestigious Rotterdam Film Festival, is an improvisatory film inspired by the underground music of Alexandria, Egypt. The Journals of Musan Film Screening [sponsored by Advocates for North Korean Human Rights] A South Korean award winning independent film, “Journals of Musan” depicts a story of a North Korean refugee trying to assimilate to the fast-paced South Korean culture. The film highlights the societal struggles that refugees face as they learn the norms, build a new community, and find a way of life. Documentary Screening Series with Discussion and Guest Speakers: Women, War, and Peace PBS recently aired a documentary series entitled “Women, War, and Peace.” These films discuss and expand upon the issues of gender and the location of women in war, peace, and justice. Each screening will be followed by a discussion, and some of the screenings will be accompanied by lectures from outside speakers in the field. Look out for spam for more information. Alloy Orchestra Performance to Man with a Movie Camera Alloy Orchestra is a three-man musical ensemble that writes and performs live accompaniment to classic silent films. Known for their unique sound, combining found percussion and state-of-the-art electronics, Alloy has performed worldwide at prestigious film festivals, such as Telluride, and cultural centers, such as the Louvre and Lincoln Center. At Wellesley, Alloy will present Man with a Movie Camera by Dziga Vertov, a groundbreaking documentary from the Moscow Film Archive about Soviet life and a treatise on filmmaking, shot on 35-mm film. This program represents a collaboration between the Susan and Donald Newhouse Center for the Humanities, the Cinema and Media Studies program, the Maria Opasnov Tyler ‘52 Fund, and the Music Department. DANCE An evening of Ugandan Dance and Music: Spirit of Uganda To the melodic tones of standing drums, with dramatic choreography, bright, layered rhythms, and gorgeous call-andresponse vocals, Spirit of Uganda brings to life the sounds and movements of East Africa. Under the artistic direction of Peter Kasule, Spirit of Uganda is Empower African Children’s professional training and touring program. On tour, 22 vibrant performers, ages 8-18, share the histories, legends and beliefs of East Africa and introduce some of the new and dynamic music and dance forms that are being created now. BAPSA’s Annual Production, “East Meets West,” an evening of Asian Performance Date: Thursday April 5, 2012 Time: 6:00pm Location: Carling-Sorenson Theater Open: tickets sold by BAPSA through the Reynolds Front Desk and at the door The Floorlords Urban Dance Theatre Four decades into hip-hop history, rap music is the preeminent form of hip-hop practice, but the other three elements of hip-hop culture, DJing, graffiti writing, and b-boying (sometimes called break dancing) are alive and kicking. This spring, Wellesley welcomes The Floorlords, one of Boston?s longest running b-boy crews, to campus for the first time as part of this series on improvisation. The Floorlords have been performing for thirty years at venues nationwide, with a changing roster of gifted and committed dancers. Their acrobatic stage show amazes and educates, as these hip-hop ambassadors embody the b-boy spirit, spinning, flipping, and breaking boundaries until the beat stops. March 28, 2012 5:00 PM Collins Cinema @ Wellesley College Wu Xian Sheng Opening Reception and Exhibit Wu Xian Sheng is a Chinese artist well known for his figure paintings in ink on paper, which capture both realistic representation and spirit. In his Yi national series he presents a group of large format portraits of Yi people from the Sichuan province. The solid forms, varied shades, vivid lines and textures are all come through in his masterful brush strokes. Wu is currently a professor of Chinese painting at the China Academy of Fine Arts in Hang Zhou, China. He has exhibited internationally, including exhibitions at the Jean Marc Gallery in France, the Tai Zhou Museum in China, and the Asian Art Center in Taipei, Taiwan. Opening Reception: March 27, 4:45-6pm Exhibit Dates: March 26-April 19, 2012 Gallery Hours: Mon. -Sat. 9am-5pm, weekends 12-5pm Jewett Gallery @ Wellesley College With a French Accent Exhibit: French and American Lithography before 1860 Featuring some fifty French and American prints from the collection of the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Mass., With A French Accent explores the French roots of American lithography. The exhibition and accompanying publication uncover several themes: the importance of French technology, the circulation and reproduction of French imagery, the stylistic contributions of French lithographic artists, and the reproduction of American genre paintings by French publishers for distribution in Europe and the United States. The exhibition was curated by Georgia Brady Barnhill ?66, Director of the Center for Historic American Visual Culture, and Lauren B. Hewes, Andrew W. Mellon Curator of Graphic Arts, both of the American Antiquarian Society, based on research supported by funds from The Florence Gould Foundation of New York. At the Davis, this exhibition is made possible through generous support from the Marjorie Schechter Bronfman ?38 and Gerald Bronfman Endowment for Works on Paper. “Weathered Waters” by Nathalie Miebach Nathalie Miebach brings together rigorous craft, science, and art to create her intricate yet playful sculptures. The artist utilizes scientific data related to astronomy, ecology, and meteorology into woven sculptures whose forms evoke baskets, nets, and models for planetary systems. The forms appropriately parallel the real life counterparts that both affect and are affected by the data that informs their structure. At Babson, she will create a site-specific wall sculpture in the Hollister Gallery. Ms Miebach received her MFA from MASS college of Art.
