sept 16. BABSON COLLEGE Microclimates: Mixed Media Art by Alison Williams. 10am-7pm. Hollister Gallery and Hollister Exterior Ongoing until October 29. Allison grew up in New Zealand, currently has a studio and garden in New Hampshire, and attended art school in Scotland . With the influence of her father's greenhouses, Allison has created glass houses for biology to overlap with creativity. Allison Williams is a 2009 recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award. The gardens and plants are inspiration for art making. Canvases are buried and rot, paintings are made outdoors in the rain, soaked flowers create delicately colored "Juices", while leaves, stems, and seeds are both stencils and collage materials layered over "unnatural" paint, stickers and found materials. The Tues. 6-8 class, with instructor Jodi Burr, started Sept. 7th. She is our new instructor this term, and comes to us with interest and talent in wheel and handbuilt ceramics. The Wed. 6-8 class starts Sept. 15th, 6-8 with instructor Joy Aginsky. She is a popular teacher, working with the wheel and molded forms. She went to the U. of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, as a ceramics major, and also has a career as a speech therapist. Stephanie Osser is a ceramic artist/ book Illustrator, managing the Babson Ceramics studio for 13 hours per week, and provides technical support during the posted hours. We still have some openings, but classes have already started. Register today!

WELLESLEY COLLEGE Calculated Risks: New Work by Faculty Artists. 11am -5pm. Chandler Gallery Ongoing until December 12. Calculated Risks celebrates the inventive diversity represented among the faculty studio artists in the Art Department at Wellesley. It features paintings, sculpture, drawings, collage, photographs, film, video, and interactive new media and will be installed in gallery spaces throughout the museum. Collins Cinema This lecture by Carlo Ratti, Department of Urban Studies and Planning, MIT, focuses on the use of transparent materials in archtechtural design. Panel participants will discuss their work and varied experiences in China in light of recent developments in China’s artistic communities and the global art market. Faculty artists on the panel will include Shanghai native, C. Meng who recently spent a sabbatical year in Bejing creating a new body of work that will be on view Davis Museum. This panel will be joined by other faculty in East Asian Studies.
The Wellesley faculty and staff include notable musicians from a variety of genres: jazz, folk, and spoken-word art. This Music Jam invites hidden stars of Wellesley College to shine their light.

(Argentina) A searing look at Argentina's "Dirty War" of the 1970s and 80s, The Night of the Pencils tells the story of six teenagers who, while lobbying for free bus passes for high school students, get accused of subversion by the then-reigning military dictatorship. Based on actual events, the film is a testament to the indelible mark on the Argentinian psyche left by the junta’s brutal suppression of its citizens. This complex portrait of the students, their parents, and their captors offers a genuinely moving and convincing picture of the ordeal that the students, along with the entire Argentine populace, endured.

In this Oscar-nominated drama, a young Iranian boy accidentally loses his sister's shoes so he secretly arranges to share his own threadbare sneakers with her as they go to and from school at different times during the day. Repeatedly late for school despite his mad dashes, the boy decides to enter a highly-publicized foot race, aiming not to win but to take home the thirdplace prize: a new pair of sneakers. Through his child’s-eye-view, the movie offers a rare glimpse of everyday life in Tehran and a vivid sense of the precariousness of existence on the edge.
