by Harold t’Kint de Roodenbeke Chairman of BRAFA Preface
Dear Art Lover,
The 68th edition of BRAFA will be returning to its usual dates in January. As the first major event on the calendar, it is a true barometer of the art market. This year, it will be bringing together some 130 leading Belgian and international galleries from January 29th to February 5th, 2023 in its new venue: Brussels Expo on the Heysel plateau. This legendary ephemeral museum, where everything is for sale, will be presenting exceptional works of ancient, modern and contemporary art, by way of tribal art, jewellery, furniture, design, silverware, ancient and modern books, glass, porcelain…
Faithful to its creed of quality, diversity and conviviality, BRAFA will be extending an invitation to an extraordinary journey over 20.000 m², covering more than 5000 years and relaying countless historical periods, styles and continents, all enhanced by a refined setting and an incomparable Belgian welcome!
Its new venue, Halls 3 and 4 of Brussels Expo at the Heysel, was met with favourable surprise by both exhibitors and visitors at the June edition of 2022. These historic sites, legacies of the World’s Fairs of 1935 and 1958, are perfectly suited to host exhibitions and benefit from excellent accessibility thanks to the numerous means of transport on offer. Rediscovering the elegance of the Fair at the last edition, each visitor was able to enjoy the open aisles, contributing to an even smoother experience.
Ensuring optimal quality is a top priority for the Fair. Its rigorous selection of participating galleries is based on criteria of excellence, speciality, geography… And because quality is synonymous with authenticity, the artworks put up for sale have been verified in advance by an international committee of independent experts.
This year’s BRAFA will be highlighting a specific theme. 2023 is the year of Art Nouveau in Brussels, which is considered to be one of the major capitals of this internationally influential movement. Its origins can be traced back to 1893, the year of the inauguration of Victor Horta’s iconic Hotel Tassel in Brussels, the first ‘Art Nouveau’ building. Beyond its architectural and decorative aspect, Art Nouveau was foremost an ideological current. Artists, architects and craftsmen of the time, terrified by intensifying industrialisation, advocated a return to nature, to the quality and durability of manufactured objects and to beauty as an ideal of life.
Various exhibitions and emblematic places which are little-known or inaccessible to the public will be opening for the occasion. BRAFA will be positioning itself in the wake of this initiative thanks to its dealers, who specialise in this movement, the presence of the King Baudouin Foundation, which will be presenting major Art Nouveau pieces, and the decoration of the carpet of the aisles which will be based on original drawings by Victor Horta... Two of the lectures in the Brafa Art Talks cycle will also celebrate this theme.
As you will have gathered, BRAFA is an unmissable event, with an organisation that strives to be impeccable, favouring exchanges between enthusiasts and offering gems to be discovered in each successive aisle. This guide provides an overview, not only of BRAFA, but also of the city and country that host it. Belgium and its multilingual capital, Brussels, are full of superb museums, enticing exhibitions and classical and modern concerts, to say nothing of the array of superlative gourmet eateries.

2023 - YEAR OF ART NOUVEAU
IN BRUSSELS
2023, the year of Art Nouveau, will foremost highlight the dynamism and creativity of Brussels as the capital of Art Nouveau, with buildings open to the public, site visits, temporary exhibitions, conferences, publications, highlighting of crafts, guided tours in the city...
1893 saw the opening of Hotel Tassel in Brussels, an emblematic building by Victor Horta and the first ‘Art Nouveau’ building. Beyond its architectural and decorative aspect, this movement was first and foremost ideological, driven by a desire to break away from imitating styles of the past, to develop an art that reflected the sensitivities and way of life of a particular society, and also advocating a return to nature, to the quality and durability of manufactured objects as well as to beauty as an ideal of life. 130 years on, these concerns remain relevant.
Discover accessible iconic Art Nouveau buildings and exceptional collections:
7 of Victor Horta’s masterpieces (3 of which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites)
• The Horta Museum, the architect’s former studio and home;
• Hotel Solvay, for which the architect demonstrated unlimited creativity thanks to an unlimited budget;
• Hotel van Eetvelde (newly accessible!), which was built at the request of the General Administrator of the Congo, Edmond van Eetvelde, on one of the most beautiful squares in Brussels, and served as a centre for the interpretation of Art Nouveau;
• the Autrique House, presenting the premises of Art Nouveau in a scenography designed by François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters;
• the Magasins Waucquez, former textile stores now home to the Comic Museum;
• the Temple of Human Passions and the Wolfers Frères Jewellery Shop, made accessible thanks to the Art and History Museum at the Cinquantenaire. The museum is assigning two new rooms to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries offering a brand-new tour devoted to Art Nouveau from autumn 2023. The tour will present several exceptional works including the famous winter garden which Victor Horta designed for Jean Cousin.
2 museums:
• the Musical Instruments Museum, housed since 2000 in the Old England, a magical building with an almost entirely metal façade designed by Paul Saintenoy;
• and the Fin-de-Siècle Museum, designed to house the exceptional Gillion Crowet Collection of remarkable French and Belgian Art Nouveau works.
2 house-museums:
• the Cauchie House, the personal home of Paul and Lina Cauchie designed by Paul and decorated by the artist couple himself,
• and the Hannon House (newly accessible!) will showcase the tastes of the aesthete and collector Edouard Hannon.

The exhibition Over to Women Artists sets aside the representation of women as mere models to focus on women creators. Drawing on its collections, the museum asks questions about its works beyond what they represent: muses, female saints, allegories, etc. What traces remain of women when
these traditional representations are set aside? Who are these women who have marked history and left their indelible mark on the artistic production of their respective periods? Putting the work of women artists in the spotlight is a fascinating and imperative exercise.

This little-explored field of research on outsider art opens up a path towards innovative practices in the field of photography, thereby contributing to renewing the way in which this medium is perceived. CENTRALE, the art centre of the city of Brussels, has also invited the Brussels-based artist Angel Vergara for an open and unique dialogue with the collector.

Belgium has been hiding a treasure for 600 years
Six centuries ago, Brussels belonged to the rich and powerful Dukes of Burgundy. The Dukes were skilled politicians and cultured patrons, and established a unique treasure: one of the most prestigious manuscript collections in the world. Started by Philip the Bold (1342-1404), the ducal library consisted of more than 900 manuscripts after Charles the Bold’s death in 1477, a third of which is currently preserved at KBR. At the intersection of medieval and modern times, this ‘Library’ covers all areas of science and contains very important texts from medieval literature. It is one of the largest libraries of its time, together with the library of the French kings, the Medici and the Vatican Library. The manuscripts were illuminated by some of the best miniaturists of the 15th century, who
For the first time, the major stages that marked the links between Picasso’s work and the history of abstract art are being brought to light. From the first Cubist experiments of 1907, carried out on the fringes of Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, to his later work, which is sometimes situated on the borders of action painting, this surprising relationship is highlighted in a subtle chronological and thematic exhibition, where more than one hundred exceptional works reveal the artist’s pendulum movement between abstraction and figuration over the decades. Another major theme of the exhibition is the artist’s studio, a true formal laboratory, and the revelation of Picasso’s creative process through various series of drawings and prints. The exhibition, with its innovative theme, invites the viewer to appreciate Pablo Picasso’s extraordinary creativity and his ability to constantly reinvent himself.

For the commissioning series Public Figure, a contemporary artist is invited each year by the Antwerp Public Art Collection (Kunst in de Stad) to make an artwork starting from the question: Who or what do we put on a pedestal in today’s public space? For this third edition, artist Mekhitar Garabedian (Syria, 1977, lives and works in Antwerp) has created a new work based on his own family history. The stacked volumes on the pedestal are casts of compressed bundles of secondhand clothes. The artwork Import-Export, Friperie can be considered to be a modest tribute to the artist’s forefathers and the economic activities they undertook in support of their families. The pedestal is not used here to honour famous figures or great stories from the past, but to tell a story about family, diaspora and resilience.

Through the world exhibitions, the visual artist Ives Maes creates an image of the world’s greatest expectations for the future: sometimes fulfilled with flying colours, but often not. That is what makes Cosmorama a fascinating journey from 19th century London to contemporary Shanghai. Ives Maes photographs the heritage of the world exhibitions. And he records the architectural remains of these short events and their construction sites. These images show an ironic contrast between the utopian expectations for the future and our current urban reality.

Collection Paul & Dora Janssen-Arts
In the highest museum gallery in the MAS, a world-famous collection – which was gathered by Dora Janssen-Arts over many years – tells us about the extraordinary relationship between man and the world of gods, ancestors and spirits in America before the conquest by the Europeans.
The Paul & Dora Janssen-Arts Collection consists of more than 400 pre-Columbian objects in gold, jade, stone, textiles and shell. The objects come from more than 50 different cultures, from Alaska to Chile, and bear witness to the craftmanship and the sense of aesthetics of their creators in America before 1500. There were many differences between the inhabitants of the American continent, but their vision of the world around them was strikingly similar. Human sacrifice was considered essential in order to ensure continuity between life and death. Fertility rituals across the continent assumed various forms but was always central in the pre-Hispanic environment.
Precious grave gifts, often made from gold, reflected the importance of life after death, shared by all the communities represented here, from Alaska to Chile.
MIRROR MIRROR - Fashion & the Psyche / 01 Oct 2022 > 26 Feb 2023
‘MIRROR MIRROR - Fashion & the Psyche’ is a joint exhibition by MoMu Fashion Museum Antwerp and Museum Dr.
Guislain in Ghent. It investigates the interconnections between fashion, psychology, self-image and identity. How do contemporary fashion designers and artists challenge beauty ideals? Can clothing protect us mentally and give us strength? The exhibition at MoMu puts our personal experience of our bodies front and centre. An unexpected and surprising dialogue between art installations and avant-garde fashion highlights such themes as body dysmorphia, the layered meanings and history of human replicas, such as dolls and mannequins, and the symbiosis between art, fashion and technology in the form of cyborgs and avatars. MoMu presents the work of artists such as Ed Atkins, Genesis Belanger, Hans Bellmer, Genieve Figgis, Mike Kelley, Sarah Lucas, Paul McCarthy, Melik Ohanian, Tschabalala Self, Cindy Sherman and Yasuyuki Ueno, in dialogue with creations by designers such as Balenciaga, Hussein Chalayan, Comme des Garçons, Molly Goddard, Kenneth Ize, Loewe, Issey Miyake, Noir Kei Ninomiya, Prada, Simone Rocha and Walter Van Beirendonck.

Face to face with Death. Hugo van der Goes, old masters and new interpretations 28 Oct 2022 > 5 Feb 2023
‘The Death of the Virgin’ by Hugo van der Goes is one of the most important works in Musea Brugge’s world-famous collection of Flemish Primitive art. Between 2018 and 2022, the painting was subjected to an extensive and intensive process of restoration, with truly magnificent results. From autumn 2022, this masterpiece will feature both literally and figuratively as the central point in this outstanding exhibition at the Sint-Janshospitaal.
‘The Death of the Virgin’ has been part of our glorious cultural heritage for 550 years. Why does this painting continue to intrigue and inspire us, even today? How is it possible that after five centuries it still evokes universal and relevant topics that people wish to discuss?
villages and towns. Ten years later, the artist-cartographer delivered his completed magnum opus to his patrons. A work positioned midway between art and cartography, Pourbus’ detailed map depicts the harbour landscape of Bruges at the end of the 16th century in a unique manner. The work was made at a crucial turning-point in history, immediately prior to the start of the Eighty Years’ War and before industrialisation changed the configuration of the coastal landscape forever. As a result, the Pourbus map is one of the last invaluable accounts of the medieval landscape that once surrounded Bruges. At the same time, its skilled combination of scale, dimensions and details makes it a technical masterpiece of the very highest quality.

This exhibition takes you back to that crucial but often forgotten period. Discover the most important archaeological sites in and around the city. From the count’s castle to the sheepherders on the coastal plains and from the fields on poor sandy soil to the first trading contacts with Scandinavia. Over the course of various stays in Pyongyang and in the Korean country side, the French photographer Stephan Gladieu took a fresh look at a country in the making. He did so without preconceptions, without militantism and without denunciation, succeeding in picking out the individual from within the group. Stephan Gladieu endeavoured to define a genuine typology, encompassing men, women and children, trades and professions, in their workplaces and during their leisure activities. The portraits of individual figures or groups tap into our need to interpret them in various ways, capturing types and categories in the manner of
August Sander. Stephan Gladieu’s North Korea provides a frontal, unflinching look at the country, an exchange of glances between the photographer and the people of North Korea. See also War Toys by Brian McCarty, from 28 January to 21 May.

as a circle in which the artist’s struggle with the complexity of life and the world takes a central position. Van Snick’s work elaborates on a variable system that is both mathematical and poetic in nature. The decimal system (0-9) and the consistent 10-colour palette herald his artistic project, in which the artist uses the system as a pretext for the production of infinite pos sibilities. Special attention is paid to Van Snick’s intimate living environment: his garden and house in France, his lifelong fascination with nature and its beautiful structures and cycles. He instinctively combines these elements and bridges them with geometrical interventions. Dynamic Project includes his first sculptural analyses and mathematically-formulated explorations of time and space. The exhibition also focuses on Van Snick’s later encounters with colour. Colour as a ready-made, but also as a metaphor for doubt and vulnerability, as an independent expression of space.
Philippe Van Snick’s artistic production also includes numerous innovative permanent projects in the public space.
Rose Wylie / 26 Nov 2022 > 26 Feb 2023
Rose Wylie (UK, Hythe 1934) is an internationally renowned figurative painter whose extensive body of work is inspired by a wide range of sources including literature, cinema, folklore, mythology and celebrity culture. Fascinated by honest, seemingly naïve forms of expression, the artist draws from clichéd as well as overlooked visual and narrative traditions. In her large-scale paintings, she effortlessly interweaves her vast knowledge of cultural production with observations and memories that evoke an impartial sense of wonder at everyday life. Although Wylie’s compositions are immediate and playful, the actual paintings are often preceded by multiple studies. They are underpinned by formal questions that are resolved by means of candid associations, remarkable scale distortions and unusual viewpoints. This exhibition is the first museum presentation of Wylie’s work in Belgium and will include a new series of paintings.

Theodoor Rombouts
21 Jan 2023 > 23 Apr 2023
Without question, the highlight of the MSK’s festive year will be the first ever monographic exhibition of works by the baroque master Theodoor Rombouts (1597-1637). The MSK will bring paintings from around the world to Ghent, where their joyful scenes and monumental compositions will come to life in a special circuit through the galleries. Young Rombouts left his native Antwerp for Italy in the early 17th century. Once there, he found inspiration in the works of the revolutionary artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) and his successor Bartolomeo Manfredi (1582-1622). After returning to Antwerp, Rombouts developed an artistic identity that was entirely his own, achieving a sublime harmony between northern and southern styles of painting and forging a solid reputation in the Antwerp art world. The standout elements of Rombouts’ varied oeuvre are his huge, lively and sometimes moralheavy genre scenes, with their merry, elegant groups of musicians and other figures. His neatly arranged compositions are often bathed in the mingled light and shadow that was so typical of southern painting, and infused with Rombouts’ signature vibrant colour palette.

In the context of the centenary of the birth of Pol Bury (1922-2005), the museum: Centre de la Gravure et de l’Image Imprimée offers an immersive journey into the fascinating universe of this major artist, who was born in the La Louvière area. The exhibition brings together approximately 250 works, mainly from the world of printmaking. Fascinated by the movement, Pol Bury attempted to translate the infinite quest at the heart of his work as a sculptor onto paper. The forms slide, spread and transform, highlighting a practice with Surrealist origins and composed of various abstract experiments. Across two floors of the museum, the graphic work enters into dialogue with a selection of sculptures. Pol Bury was a tireless researcher, constantly inventing ways to produce new images: cuts, twists, atypical uses of presses. A unique opportunity to discover his ever-renewed inventiveness, mixed with a mischievous taste for geometry.

The Rothschild collectors. Female patrons and donors par excellence 21 Oct 2022 > 26 Feb 2023
Designed in partnership with The Louvre, this exhibition introduces visitors to the world of the Rothschild family, and particularly to the collections of certain women of family. Through a selection of over 350 works from around forty French institutions and private collections, the exhibition circuit will include works from all periods and all perspectives. Visitors will encounter great artists, such as Fragonard, Chardin, Delacroix, Cézanne, Claudel, Rodin and Egon Schiele, but also manuscripts from the Middle Ages, Italian Renaissance paintings, collections of jewels and porcelain and even works of art from Africa and the Far East. A huge number of artworks that bear witness to the history of tastes and collecting throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
M worked with ten participants, M’s guinea pigs, on a new collection presentation with artworks carefully selected from the M and Cera collection. The entire process was built up as a digital experiment, in the form of a game with multiple episodes. For each episode, points were earned which the guinea pigs had to use to get their favourite works of art into the collection presentation. Each episode ended with a voting round where works of art were eliminated.

From day to day, the 18th century 26 Feb 2022 > 30 Dec 2023
An exhibition taking visitors behind the scenes of the 18th century. With the help of the almanac kept by the castle’s bailiff, visitors will be able to discover a year in the life of its occupants. From room to room, the recreated life of the Estate unfolds over the seasons. The exhibition provides insights into the owners’ enthusiasms, explores the traditions of the time, and reveals the little-known passages that were used by the castle’s servants.
