Preface

by Harold t’Kint de Roodenbeke Chairman of BRAFA

Dear art lovers, Art must be felt and experienced: the emotion that comes from physical contact with a work of art is irreplaceable… We are delighted to welcome you again for this 67th edition of BRAFA. The 2022 edition marks the return to a “face-to-face” fair, from Sunday 19th to Sunday 26th of June, in a new setting with a prestigious history: Brussels Expo at the Heysel. 115 exhibitors from 15 countries will unveil their finest pieces in ancient, modern or contemporary art. This edition will not be lacking in ambition or allure! The ingredients of BRAFA’s success remain unchanged: a rigorous selection of participating galleries, very high-quality works of art, an optimal organisation and a very “Belgian” conviviality. Another asset appreciated by our visitors is the intersection of all the specialities. The eye thus creates surprising associations that sustain a constant sense of wonder. BRAFA is known for being a pioneer among the classical art fairs, presenting a mix of all types of objects (comics, dinosaur skeletons, cinema costumes...). This year, it will also have the pleasure of presenting Islamic Arts for the first time. It is traditional to welcome a guest of honour. In another first this year, it will be a Belgian artist, Arne Quinze, who will sublimate the decor of the fair. His art, totally inspired by nature, will instil a joyful, positive and colourful atmosphere! Visitors will once again have the opportunity to attend daily conferences, the BRAFA Art Talks. These will be inaugurated by a conversation with the guest of honour, followed by a signing session on Sunday, June 19th. The subjects will be varied and exciting: From Antwerp to Amsterdam, sixteenth and seventeenth-century painting; How to collect contemporary art?; Two hundred years of Egyptology (1822-2022). Retrospective of the Belgian contribution to the study of ancient Egyptian culture; Women of the Rothschild family, collectors, patrons and exceptional donors… And, to enhance your visit to BRAFA with some social and cultural interludes, this guide gives you a nice overview of excellent restaurants, concerts and must-see exhibitions, such as Portrait of Lady at the Villa Empain, Christian Dotremont at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Belgium, or even the exceptional permanent collections of our museums… BRAFA is eager to welcome you in summer mode and to offer you a dazzling artistic feast!

ARNE QUINZE

Arne Quinze by Dave Bruel

Guest of honour

Beautiful Dreamer, Paris

Born in Belgium in 1971, Arne Quinze currently lives and works in Sint-Martens-Latem, a town near the Belgian city of Ghent. He began his career in the 1980s as a graffiti artist. He questioned the role of our cities and started his search for cities to become open-air museums. His work evolved from street art to public art. The artist depicts society as a cohesive and intact ecosystem, a sampling of nature, which is his chief inspiration. He uses his garden as a scale model, an explosion of life with the rampant splendour of flowers. His sculptures and installations call for a retention of diversity and pluralism, and for experimentation and cross-fertilisation. This is a clear indictment of the present trend towards monocultures and soured relations. Bringing people back together again: according to Quinze, this should be the ultimate objective of public art. Just as in the artworks, and just as in nature, cities should aim for a symbiosis of numerous organisms, which in turn fuel conversation and, consequently, the conservation of their future. Nowadays, many of his installations are considered to be landmarks that show a different dynamic for urban development: Paris; Shanghai; Beirut; Washington, D.C.; Brussels; Mumbai; São Paulo… Quinze has been intervening in cities now for over 25 years, most recently in Venice as part of the Biennale. Many projects are still lined up to be finalised, notably in Cairo. At Brafa, he will be present with sculptures, paintings and drawings, without forgetting the design of the carpet. 6

EXHIBITIONS BRUSSELS \ AFRICAMUSEUM Leuvensesteenweg 13 / 3080 Tervuren www.africamuseum.be Focus on the ‘Rituals and ceremonies’ gallery To illustrate the rituals and ceremonies that punctuate the important stages of all life, the AfricaMuseum has chosen to adopt a museography devoted to African voices. Large screens show videos of people from Congo, Rwanda and Burundi sharing their experiences of birth, education, marriage, wellbeing, leadership, and death and commemoration. Objects related to these rites bring their stories to life. The pieces’ journey to the museum and the circumstances of their collection during the colonial period are also discussed.

Portrait of a Lady / 24 Mar 2022 > 4 Sep 2022 Through a series of artworks, Portrait of a Lady illustrates the various forms of representation of women from prehistoric times to today, as well as the more specific journeys of a few exceptional women. Bringing together a selection of ancient and contemporary pieces, the exhibition will establish a dialogue between different cultures and civilizations from the East and the West. This project aims to honour the portraits of both renowned and unknown women from the past to the present day. 21

In addition to historical figures, the artworks present images of Greece and Africa, with insights into the stories of the Queen of Sheba and Dido, Queen of Carthage. From the personification of fertility to the representations of courtesans and empresses, the exhibition endeavours to shed light on the different views and interpretations of women throughout the ages. \ BOZAR - CENTRE FOR FINE ARTS Rue Ravenstein 23 / 1000 Brussels www.bozar.be Project Palace, a centenary / 1 Apr 2022 > 21 Jul 2022 2022 is the time to celebrate for Bozar. 4 April 1922, Brussels Town Hall: The date when the Centre for Fine Arts (‘Palais des Beaux-Arts’) was officially launched. The judicial basis for the construction and the associated ambition of creating an arts centre had become a reality. The statutes that establish this historic moment are the starting point for centenary celebrations that begin with the Project Palace exhibition and a celebratory programme in April 2022. Bozar, together with curator Wouter Davidts, has invited 10 artists to take part in the celebrations by producing new work that reflects on what an arts centre such as Bozar can and should be, now and into the future. They put the spotlight on the arts centre today, yet viewed through the filter of the past. 22

This is what you came for / 28 Apr 2022 > 21 Jul 2022 BelgianArtPrize laureate 2021 Els Dietvorst is a visual artist and filmmaker who lives and works in South East Ireland. Dialogue, experiments and intuition are recurring strategies in her work. Since the 1990s, she has been fascinated by social issues such as migration, racism and climate change. She investigates the human condition, which in her work results in themes such as life and death, fear, alienation, and desire. This exhibition is conceived as an encounter and an invitation. The proposal grew out of the almost ritualistic actions and creations that Els Dietvorst began during the Covid19 lockdown. This is what you came is being held simultaneously at two venues in Brussels – De Centrale and Bozar – and creates a fluid wave between the two places, with one exhibition mirroring the other. A combination of sculpture, installation, video and performance will introduce you to the universe of Els Dietvorst, in which she is always looking for connections with people, and creating spaces for encounters. In the framework of the BelgianArtPrize.

Vivian Maier / 8 Jun 2022 > 21 Jul 2022 Over several decades, from the early 1950s onward, Vivian Maier (1926-2009) worked as a nanny in New York and Chicago. She meticulously documented the world around her but rarely, if ever, created prints from her negatives, so her

work remained virtually unseen during her lifetime. Her entire life was shrouded in anonymity until her body of photographic work came to light in 2007: more than 120,000 negatives, Super 8 and 16 mm films, audio recordings and more, which together form a previously-unexhibited collection that can now be explored for the first time. Her all-consuming photographic efforts eventually made her one of the most celebrated proponents of street photography.

Charlotte Perriand. How do We Want to Live? Politics of Photomontage / 1 Apr 2022 > 28 Aug 2022 Charlotte Perriand devoted her life to improving the living conditions of the greatest number of people, creating an ‘art of inhabiting’ in connection with nature. She used photography not only as a tool to observe reality, but also to defend her conception of a new world. In the 1930s, echoing our current concerns, she used large-scale photomontages to denounce unhealthy urbanism and provide her own vision of how to improve life. Her photographic frescoes demonstrate the modernity of her approach, such as La Grande Misère de Paris (1936), the waiting room of the Minister of Agriculture (1937), or the pavilion of the Ministry of Agriculture at the Exposition internationale des arts et techniques de la vie moderne (International Exposition of Art and Technology in Modern Life) of 1937, composed with Fernand Léger. The exhibition offers an immersion into her perception of the world through her method of creation and her incredible collection of photographs - period prints, negatives, magazine cut-outs, personal photographs -, archives which are placed against reconstitutions of her monumental photomontages.

Kasper Bosmans. Husbandry / 25 Feb 2022 > 14 Aug 2022 Kasper Bosmans is an entertainer, a storyteller; anecdotes punctuate his conversation and artistic research. Fascinated by tales that resonate across time, he unpicks their threads and weaves them into new ones, attempting to slow them down by transforming words into images and objects. His wilfully anachronistic set of references turns out to be extremely eloquent about the current state of the world, revealing his finesse in appropriating historical material and local traditions to speak about contemporary, global questions. This ambitious and playful exhibition reveals the scope and humour of Bosmans’ original practice. Lucy Raven. Another Dull Day / 27 Apr 2022 > 14 Aug 2022 In this exhibition, Lucy Raven proposes a disarticulated reading of the landscape of the Western United States, turning our gaze away from the distant horizon to focus on a forcefield of geographic, material and historical tensions. The installations explore the properties of extreme pressure and material state change occurring respectively at an explosives range in New Mexico and a concrete plant in Idaho.

Simon Vansteenwinckel. Wuhan Radiography / 21 May 2022 > 18 Sep 2022 In this period of reduced freedoms, Simon Vansteenwinckel wondered how to persist in being curious, travelling, looking and reaching out to others, continuing to advocate openness rather than withdrawal into oneself. From his locked-down living room, he opened a window on the world via the incredible tool that is Google Maps, which enables us to travel the entire planet in an interposed way (Google Street View/Photo Sphere to be precise). The epidemic was at the centre of all discussions, an invisible but omnipresent monster. And it had a name: Wuhan, where it all began, the home of the epidemic, an unknown city subject to all rumors, inadvertently catapulted into the centre of the news. The images of Wuhan Radiography were made by photographing the screen directly according to his wanderings in the city. For this piece, he used Washi F film, a medical X-ray film initially used for diagnosing lung diseases.

In response to the lack of empathy, care and inclusion in our society, she sometimes makes a radical exit from urban life to engage with alternative and spiritual communities in different parts of the world. On the basis of her experiences and research, she produces films, exhibitions, workshops and objects that suggest new forms of self-reliance and community building. Grace Ndiritu initiated the Healing the Museum project ten years ago. Concerned with the fate of the ‘dying’ museum, she introduced non-rational methodologies – such as shamanism and group meditation – in the hope of reanimating the space, sharing it and making it more ethical. Ndiritu will continue this project during her residency at S.M.A.K. By means of group sessions and research into the permanent collection, she will endeavour to grasp the museum’s spiritual history. Lydia Ourahmane Barzakh / 21 May 2022 > 18 Sep 2022 The artistic projects of Lydia Ourahmane (° 1992, Saïda, Algeria) are often based on events in her personal surroundings or on objects that carry a tension due to their social, political or economic significance. These objects provide the impetus for an in-depth examination of the way in which repeated histories of forced displacement and colonial oppression inscribe themselves upon individual lives, bodies and structures. The actual work takes the form of a video, performance, sculpture, sound piece or installation and often has an experimental character. The Arabic word ‘barzakh’ means ‘to be in limbo’, an ‘in-between state’ between life and death, the place where the spirits hide but also a physical location that offers protection. For this project, Ourahmane moved the entire contents of her flat in Algiers to Europe during the 2020 lockdown. Prevented from returning to Algeria due to an on-going artist’s residency, she made her ‘home’ come to her and transformed it into an installation. It was given the same surface area and layout as her original living space. In the exhibition, the artist’s interventions and unique circumstances ensure that the contents are transformed into an extremely complex, fragile environment, which releases its meanings slowly, and in unexpected ways. ‘Barzakh’ was commissioned by Kunsthalle Basel and is a co-production of Kunsthalle Basel and @TriangleAstérides, Centre d’art contemporain, Marseille. S.M.A.K. is the third stage of a journey that has taken ‘Barzakh’ from Basel to Marseille and Ghent. N. Dash / 24 Jun 2022 > 6 Nov 2022 The works of N. Dash (° 1980, Miami) arise from an intense and equitable exchange with whatever is at hand. In her multifaceted practice, the artist processes humble materials such as dirt, 30

earth, jute, rope, strips of polystyrene foam, plastic bottles and discarded cardboard into complex compositions. She borrows techniques and materials from painting, sculpture, photography and printing. Through these transformations, a paradox seems to form in the perception of the works, which are as refined as they are simple. The vitality and economy of Dash’s constructions can be traced to her connection to the environment, both natural and man-made, and to geological time or the vast interval in which biological life has arisen on earth. The underlying tension between what is industrially ‘given’ and what is manually constructed, and the unpredictability of the elements and human attempts to tame these natural energies, forms an integral part of this tactile body of work. New works will be produced especially for the exhibition.

He creates symbolic scenes with a humorous, playful or absurd slant. His work explores cultural identity and history, trauma, colonisation and the connection between man and nature. Open M / 6 May 2022 > 28 Aug 2022 Open M gives visual artists the opportunity to display their work in M Leuven’s museum galleries. With this initiative, M focuses on artists who have a link with Flemish Brabant or Leuven. All disciplines within the visual arts are welcome: from painting to performance, from films to graphic design. This edition of Open M revolves around transhistoricity. The international curator Melanie Bühler (Frans Hals Museum, the Netherlands) will create a selection from the submissions. M will present the selection from 06.05.2022 as a group exhibition. 33

Costa Lefkochir. The progression of a journey / 6 May 2022 > 7 Aug 2022 This monographic exhibition presents a display of large-format pieces by Costa Lefkochir: paintings, sculptures and installations from 1987 to 2022. The exhibition route, which is not chronological, brings together major works that are symbolic of the path taken and travelled to create a visual language imbued with a fundamentally Humanist leaning. His creative process is driven by a spirituality that seeks to find the greatest possible sense of harmony, as part of a highly personal and singular form of artistic expression. The entire process stems from a journey in which spirit and style mingle and merge to affirm essential values. Many of the works in this collection are previously unseen, on loan from private collections, institutions, companies and the artist’s studio, with others being created especially for the exhibition, which will include more than one hundred pieces.

MECHELEN \ MUSEUM HOF VAN BUSLEYDEN Frederik de Merodestraat 65 2800 Mechelen www.hofvanbusleyden.be Gap in the Clouds, Ricardo Brey / 20 May 2022 > 28 Aug 2022 With Ricardo Brey, Museum Hof van Busleyden welcomes one of the most important Cuban artists of our times in Mechelen. From the outset, Ricardo Brey’s artistic practice has focused on his questioning of mankind’s place in

the world, of how people understand and categorise reality and themselves. Brey’s ongoing series of boxes, ‘Every Life is a Fire’, reveals the artist’s ongoing investigation into philosophical concepts such as time, mythology, human expression and the natural universe. Brey uses his confined boxes to evoke surprise and astonishment. A kind of compact Wunderkammer, Brey’s enigmatic boxes depict the complex workings of the human mind, inviting performative engagement by unfolding the four walls of the box to reveal a woven web of symbols.

painting know-how is expressed in the paintings from the first half of the 20th century by this Mons artist, whose career was largely international. 80 works from public and private collections present the paintings of Anto-carte through the prism of his aspiration to the sacred. Indeed, the artist’s greatest paintings revisit the classical themes of Christian iconography whilst celebrating the grandeur of the rural world.

With the help of the almanac kept by the castle’s bailiff, visitors will discover a year in the life of its occupants. From room to room, the recreated life of the Estate unfolds over the seasons. The exhibition will provide insights into the owners’ enthusiasms, explore the traditions of the time, and reveal the little-known passages that were used by the castle’s servants.

TO B E B E LG I A N To be Belgian is a sweet Surrealism, with the flavours of croquettes with shrimp, mussels and fries, gauff’ of Liège. It is tasting the best chocolate and the best beers in the world. And sparkling at the song of Eole in the company of Ruffus. To be Belgian is to feel like Magritte disguised as Tintin or Spirou. Contemplating Rubens, Van Dijk or Brueghel to the tune of Sax(o). Entering a train station in Delvaux with Geluck’s cat, Lagaffe’s seagull or the Smurfs. Admiring the size of the Manneken, and counting the balls of the Atomium whilst reading Van Cauwelaert, Nothomb or Yourcenar. It means remembering that Tintin was the first to walk on the moon... and showing off with Dirk Frimout, our astronaut, a living reincarnation of Professor Calculus. To be Belgian is to drive like Ickx, to cycle like Merckx. It is a smash by Hénin, a volley by Clijsters or an ace by Goffin. It’s singing Brel, Adamo or the Great Jojo with an Elvis Pompilio hat on Annie Cordy’s head. It’s humming Stromae, Maurane, Lara Fabian, Selah Sue, Alice on the Roof, Angèle or Axelle Red. Belgium is Poelvoorder with Arno, Bernard Yerlès, Patrick Ridremont and François Damiens, to the tune of Toots Thielemans surpassing Efira or Marie Gillain... It is the pipe of Simenon - which is indeed one - and the pun-rich genius of De Groodt, the worthy spiritual son of Devos. It’s being called De France when your first name is Cécile. To be Belgian is to be proud, without showing off too much...
