Compiling our catalogue of acquisitions is one of the highlights of our year. Finding and choosing the pieces to be included is never easy but always exciting; a reminder of the talents of these ancient artists and craftsmen and of the timeless appeal of their work. Included in this current collection are works ranging from the prehistoric rock art of the Sahara to Christian imagery from the Byzantine world, a span of almost 9000 years and covering a vast geographical area. And yet this diversity does not grate but highlights the fact that just as ancient peoples were influenced by their neighbouring civilisations so the themes, subjects and forms of these ancient works of art continue to resonate with us today.
