Letter From The Director

Dear Art Patrons: As I’m writing this issue’s note, the fantastically talented kids at Quincy Notre Dame High School have just wrapped up their annual Spring Show, and the students at Quincy Senior High are gearing up for New Faces, their annual variety show, which will be held April 5th – 8th. When I attend these arts events at our local high schools, I am struck by the quality and sophistication of these performances. Not only are the performers on stage singing, acting, dancing or playing to the very best of their ability, but the sound, the lights, the set design and the auditorium all come together to create an experience that is so engaging, you’d be forgiven if you forgot you were watching high school students!

Right now, many schools and administrators are trying their hardest to combat bullying and increase engagement for their marginalized students, and it occurs to me that these big performances are one of the few places where kids from all different backgrounds and from everywhere in the social strata of a high school are working together toward one goal. There’s a quiet kid in the light booth who knows what a gobo is and how to calculate the angle and beam spread of every spotlight in the auditorium. There’s a group of students who generally love to spend their weekends playing video games, but right now are learning the ins and outs of running a sound board to optimize the acoustics for a soloist or a group. There’s a student on stage right now who’s stepped out of her comfort zone for the first time and, even though her heart is pounding, she will walk up to the mic and address a crowd. And there is a

small army of kids who have met after school for weeks to build and paint sets to bring an artistic vision to life. This group of young people, all very different in their everyday lives, have come together to dedicate their time and talent to staging a show we can all enjoy. They’ve formed a creative community in which everyone is important. For a moment, mistakes are forgotten and triumphs are celebrated as one big team. At the end of a show, it’s a tradition for kids to scribble their names in a group on a wall backstage. We can go back and look at these names and remember that, though each student is forging their own path through their time in high school, these kids found a home and belonging in the arts. Legacy

Arts Quincy (The Quincy Society of Fine Arts)

just celebrated 70 years as Quincy's umbrella organization for All the Arts, and so much of that success and longevity is because of generous donors who understand how important it is to have the Quincy Society of Fine Arts acting as a voice for the entire creative community. We hope that when you think about planned giving, you'll consider supporting Arts Quincy and our mission to expand arts access to every member of the community. Planned gifts offer a great opportunity for you to continue a legacy of supporting music, theatre, visual art and humanities for many years to come, and may also help you realize select tax/estate benefits. Arts Quincy, America's First Arts Council, has worked since 1947 to support all of the fine arts nonprofits in the area with media, resources and funding that make the arts part of the fabric of Quincy. We are committed to the highest levels of stewardship of your donations, and were recently awarded the Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Nonprofit Ethics because we know our donors expect transparency and effectiveness with their funds. For more information on how you can create a legacy gift that supports all the fine arts for years to come, please call 217-222-3432 or email director@artsquincy.org to set up an appointment with Laura Sievert, Executive Director, and Dave Oakley, Endowment Chair.

Symphony Finale Out of This World! Quincy Symphony Orchestra Presents “Science & Symphony” Concert Quincy Symphony Orchestra, Chorus & Youth Chorus The Planets Concert Saturday, April 21 at 7:30 pm Morrison Theater, QJHS Dr. José Francisco Salgado’s passion for astronomy began when he found one of his father’s books on the moon landing. “I was captivated by the fact that we visited another world and the technology that took us there,” says Salgado. “I wanted to study space. I didn’t even know the word 'astronomy.'"

Dr. José Francisco Salgado

He achieved that dream, becoming an astronomer at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago and an adjunct professor at Benedictine University. Later Salgado applied his skills in illustration and photography to create astronomy-themed artwork that would "provoke curiosity and a sense of wonder about the Earth and the Universe". This evolved into a series of projects where art is used to communicate science and to inspire people to learn about science on their own. The flagship project of this series has been the Science and Symphony films that consist of live performances of classical music accompanied by high-definition science films. 6

artsquincy.org

The Quincy Symphony Orchestra (QSO) has teamed up with Salgado for a Science and Symphony performance at 7:30 pm on Saturday, April 21. The QSO, under the direction of Dr. Bruce Briney, will perform Gustav Holst’s The Planets as Salgado’s critically acclaimed film plays on Morrison Theater’s new 20-foot projection screen. The screen and accompanying technology is a gift to the Quincy Junior High School through a collaborative effort of the Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association (QSOA), Quincy Public Schools (QPS), QPS Foundation, The Marion Gardner Jackson Trust and Encore! Symphony Volunteer Council.

"By partnering with symphony orchestras, scientific and educational institutions, this project connects disciplines such as astronomy, photography, music, and storytelling to increase the understanding and appreciation of these uniquely human endeavors."

By partnering with symphony orchestras, scientific and educational institutions, this project connects disciplines such as astronomy, photography, music, and storytelling to increase the understanding and appreciation of these uniquely human endeavors. The films feature images,

animations and science visualizations from NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), as well as historical illustrations. They follow the tempo and tone set by the music, and are intended to be art pieces that inspire audiences and encourage them to learn more about the music and the universe.

"It gives the impression that the film came first and then someone scored the music, when in fact, it's the opposite." Salgado says audiences may expect a “pretty slideshow,” but instead he created “a film that follows the tone and the tempo of the music very closely—a film that augments the music instead of competing for attention. It gives the impression that the film came first and then someone scored the music, when in fact, it’s the opposite.”

Dr. Salgado will take up a short-term residency in Quincy the week before the concert and conduct demonstrations at area schools. He’ll also discuss the creation of Science and Symphony films prior to The Planets performance on Saturday, April 21. The orchestra will also debut the newly commissioned “Steel and Smoke” by Illinois composer Jacob Bancks. “Steel and Smoke” is based loosely on the poem by Carl Sandburg. The QSO commissioned Bancks to write the piece to honor Briney’s 10th year as conductor, which coincides with the organization’s 70th anniversary. The Quincy Symphony Chorus, Quincy Area Youth Chorus, John Wood Community College Choir and Quincy University choirs join forces in a performance of movements from “Sunrise Mass” by Ola Gjeilo. This spiritually-uplifting music, orchestrated for Dr. Phyllis strings and choir, uses ancient texts to take Robertson the audience on a journey from the heavens to earth. The Symphony Chorus is directed by Dr. Phyllis Robertson. The Youth Chorus is directed by Paul Shelor and Amy Walker.

The Grand Prize Drawing for the 13th Annual QSOA Raffle will be held at the conclusion of the intermission. Raffle proceeds support the many programs of the QSOA. The grand prize of $1,000, second place prize of two Hamilton tickets, third place prize of two SkyWest round trip tickets to Chicago and fourth place prize of two QSOA season tickets will be awarded. Raffle tickets are on sale for $10 each or 12/$100, and may be purchased at the concert, in advance from any orchestra, chorus, Encore! or Symphony Board member, or by calling the Symphony office at 217-222-2856.

Tickets for The Planets are available in advance at Quincy HyVee, County Market, Sturhahn Jewelers, the symphony office or qsoa.org. Tickets are $15 for seniors and $18 for adults. Thanks in part to support from the Tracy Family Foundation, children 18 and under are admitted free to all QSO concerts. Current students, faculty and staff of Quincy University, Hannibal-LaGrange University and Culver-Stockton College are admitted free by showing their school identification. The Golden Baton Season Sponsors are the Knapheide Manufacturing Company and Blessing Health System. The concert is made possible in part by Concert Sponsor Mercantile Bank, Music Sponsors Schmiedeskamp, Robertson, Neu & Mitchell, Media Sponsor WGEM and the Irwin Family Fund through the Community Foundation of the Quincy Area. artsquincy | April/May 2018

Sound

The Science of The Quincy Symphony Orchestra

has us inspired to look at the intersection of sound, art and science! Try this cool Tonoscope experiment at home to "see" sound!

What You'll Need:

• Round Container- Try an oatmeal or ice cream container! • A Large Balloon, big enough to cover the top of the container • Large Rubber Band • Two Paper Towel Tubes • Tape • Scissors • Sugar or Salt

For more fun ideas in science, art and music, check out academy.animaljam.com.

Instructions:

Parents: Please help smaller children with the scissors!

1. Trace and cut out a hole at the bottom of the container the size of your towel tube. 2. Trace and cut a hole at one end of the top towel tube so that you're able to insert the other tube. 3. Cut a 1.5 inch rectangle off of the top tube of the L shape, then insert it in the hole you cut in the bottom tube. 4. Secure with tape and tape off the end of the bottom tube. 5. Secure the balloon over the mouth of your object with a rubber band. 6. Pour a small amount of sugar or salt on the top. Sing and talk into the tube and watch what happens! Try different notes and volumes and talk about the different things the salt does when you change the sound!

Meet the Musicians

Jan Kendrick, Debbie Vonderhaar and Marianne Peters each began playing their oboes at a young age. It takes years to perfect the sound of this unique and beautiful instrument. The women love that the oboe has some of the most beautiful music written for it, both in ensembles and in solo repertoire. Through many opportunities to practice and perform, these three Quincy Concert Band members have become lifelong friends. After a successful spring performance this past March, the Quincy Concert Band is preparing for its fall concert. Save the date for All That Jazz! on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 2:30 pm in Morrison Theater at Quincy Junior High School. The band is currently seeking saxophonists to join. Community Centered Librarian Making an Impact When most people retire from a job, they are free to pursue interests, hobbies and activities that are typically outside of their former careers. Not Rose Tynes. Her love of books and the library community has filled her life in all its' stages, even after retirement. “Coming to the library is like visiting an old friend,” explained Tynes. “I would have a big hole in my life if suddenly I couldn’t go the library.” Her sentiments, like many, express her lifelong love of the library and its constant presence in her life with books, programs and friends. That influence began in childhood when she and her siblings would spend afternoons at the library. Later, she even met her husband at the library! Originally from New York, Tynes earned an English degree and had sufficient computer skills to land a job with a publishing company. But her career took another path when she learned about a shortage of librarians in the state. Over the course of two years, she spent half her time finishing coursework for her Masters in Library Science degree and the other half of the time, she gained onthe-job knowledge by working in the New York Public Library System. “Those two years were magical! The class visited every branch of the library system and learned about each facility's specialty. At the Lincoln Center branch, I worked in the archives which had documentation of well-known performers. The Harlem Library branch was also particularly memorable for me.” Tynes came into her library career just

as digital software was replacing the card catalog system. Libraries were also introducing computers to patrons for personal use. Tynes enjoyed teaching adults how to use the new machines at various library branches.

“Coming to the library is like visiting an old friend, I would have a big hole in my life if suddenly I couldn’t go the library,” explained Tynes.

Since her retirement to Quincy, Tynes works in the Secondhand Prose Bookstore at Quincy Public Library each week as a Friends of the Library volunteer. She also contributes her time to the group's popular book sale twice each year. She especially enjoys introducing books to children and feels it helps to cultivate an early interest in reading that lasts a lifetime. “When I introduce the children to these books and new ideas, I learn something, too. Libraries are more than just places to check out books. It fills an important void in people’s lives. When people show their interest in the library, the library can respond to provide the materials and programs for you.”

Check-in will be from 2 – 5 pm Friday at the History Museum at 332 Maine. Light refreshments will be served during check-in, and a General Grant impersonator will be present to cut a cake in honor of his 196th birthday. Guests may view a display of Grant’s family memorabilia, period photographs, glasswork and china from private collections. The symposium will commence at 7 pm with two presentations. First, Dr. Samuel Wheeler will discuss “Remembering Ulysses S. Grant: An Illinoisan at the Bicentennial” followed by Larry Werlines who will discuss “U.S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln.” Saturday’s activities include tours of the Governor John Wood Mansion grounds (including the Livery, Log Cabin and Lincoln Gallery), the Eells House (Underground Railroad site), the LincolnDouglas Debate Interpretive Center, and presentations by John Alexander, Timothy Good and Steve Belko. Alexander will address the topic “Colonel Grant’s Journey from Springfield to Quincy.” Alexander will point out some of the misinformation that has surrounded this important time in Grant’s career. The day’s additional speakers, Good

and Belko, will discuss “Grant and African-Americans,” and “Sequel to Civil War: President Grant vs. the American Indian,” respectively. Good brings years of experience to his presentation as superintendent of the National Park Service Ulysses S. Grant Site outside St. Louis, and Belko looks at an aspect of Grant’s presidency that is rarely discussed. Venues for each presentation will be announced after the pre-registration deadline. All venues except Mansion grounds will be in downtown Quincy, within an easy walking distance of the History Museum. Shuttle service will be available for the tours Saturday morning. Twain's Comedy, Is He Dead?, Coming to QCT sister, a widow who is a little mad, peculiar and unconventional.

Discovery Night Monday, April 16 at 6 pm Is he dead? May 3 – 6 & 11 – 13 Meet the cast Friday, May 11 Quincy Community Theatre

Hilarious complications ensue and the true comedics emerge as Millet tries to secure his fortune, get the girl and triumph!

Is He Dead? is the must-see comedy of the year! This previously unproduced play, written in 1898 by Mark Twain and adaped by American playwright David Ives in 2002, has at last made its way to modern day theater - and you can see it this spring at Quincy Community Theatre (QCT)! Set in Paris in 1846, Is He Dead? is a fictional story about a starving painter who is forced to don women's clothes. A group of friends that convince JeanFrançois Millet (based on the real-life painter) that faking is own death is just the ticket to increase the value of his paintings. So Millet disappears from life and re-emerges as his imaginary twin

“With our area’s ties to Twain, it’s fitting that we produce this play,” said Brandon Thomsen, Artistic Director. “I think he would be most amused to see his play performed here. The play feels like it was written today, and it’s a testament to Twain that his writing is so effective over one hundred years later. Good comedy is just timeless!” Tickets are $20 – 22, on sale Monday, April 9. Performances are May 3 – 6 and 11 – 13, Thursday – Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. There will be a post-show Meet the Cast question and answer session on Friday, May 11 after the performance.

Audiences can also gain an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look into the making of Is He Dead? during Discovery Night on Monday, April 16 at 6 pm. This backstage tour is free and open to the public. Preregistration is preferred.

For tickets, to volunteer backstage, or to serve as an usher, visit 1qct.org or call the QCT Box Office, located in the Oakley-Lindsay Center, at 217-222-3209.

Heaven Spiral Reach by Debbie Lutz

Broadband Booggie Woogie by Tim Laffey

Turtle Dragon Luck by Kelsey Strother

Current Art Center Satellite Exhibits on View Debbie Lutz (Good Hope, IL) enjoys many disciplines including the needle arts, Ukrainian eggs and more, but her favorite media is digital fractal design. See her work now through Tuesday, April 10 at Quincy Art Center’s Satellite Exhibit at Quincy Medical Group, 1118 Hampshire St. Fractals, a mixture of art and geometry, are patterns that generate shapes that reflect in natural phenomenons such as ferns and ice crystals. Hollywood designers use these fractal geometric algorithms to create Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) we see in the movies.

Laffey was raised on a farm in Carthage with his nine siblings and he developed a great love for nature. In his early adulthood, he realized he wanted to try his hand at painting, and now it's become a bit of an obsession! Laffey’s work includes painting, woodwork, plaster art and metal sculpting. His work is largely in the abstract expressionist style that combine with structural influences from Cubism, Pop Art and Minimalism. Laffey creates paintings in series which are organized around a central theme. His current focus is to bring narrative into his artwork.

Lutz’s wants to incorporate fractals into mainstream art and show how digital art can combine math and science to create unique and beautiful images. Her artwork has been featured on the show Illinois Stories on the local PBS affiliate Network Knowlege.

Laffey’s paintings have been exhibited throughout the Midwest.

Beginning Wednesday, April 11, see artwork by Tim Laffey (Carthage, IL) at the QMG satellite exhibit through Tuesday, June 5.

architecture and nature. His photographs have won numerous awards and can be found in private and corporate collections. Paintings and drawings by local artist, Kelsey Strother (Quincy) are currently featured in the Quincy Art Center’s satellite location at the Broadway Hy-Vee Market Café and Bar until Tuesday, May 22. A graduate of Quincy High School, Strother has acquired degrees and further education in the art departments at John Wood Community College and Quincy University. Her artwork is imaginative and prefers the finished products combine dreamlike images with everyday feelings such as humor, irony, and passion. Strother draws on the influences of Surrealism, Japanese animation and comics to inspire her. When creating, she prefers to use watercolor, Prismacolor markers, pens, and digital media. Strother’s objective as an artist is to create art, share it and inspire others.

Artists interested in exhibiting in any of the satellite exhibits can submit a proposal to Quincy Art Center. Exhibits are free and open to the public. Responding to the World Through Art

For over eight years now, artist C. Maura Poshka, an art activist and responder, has been creating narrative collage pieces often in response to major world events. Unfortunately, there’s a steady stream of tragedies for Poshka to respond to artistically. In a time of rapid social change and technological development, she has challenged preconceived and traditional artistic concepts to capture emotions that pay homage to other’s experiences.

Limited by her own physical abilities, she has been able to explore narrative collage. The pieces are constructed in a small scale, on her lap, and are made to be laser printed on paper, canvas or vinyl. To tell a story, she begins with an idea and selects images from paper material, with influences from religion, world events, and also daily life. These images are combined with structural

Generation after generation, Quincy musicians and teachers weave music into the fabric of the community’s everyday lives. This tradition has been passed down to four decades of Quincy Senior High School choir students through their directors, the late Dr. Lavern Wagner and longtime choral director and percussionist Dan Sherman.

This is an excellent opportunity for former students to pay homage to their dedicated teachers and recollect on past times with fellow alumni. Participants should plan to rehearse on Saturday, Sept. 1 and are also invited to enjoy a social gathering that same day. More information will be available in the next issue of Arts Quincy magazine, but for now, interested participants should follow A Quincy Music Story Concert on facebook or call 217-224-0644. Business Donor Spotlight True Human Connection There is something remarkable about the emotion-producing power of the arts; the thoughts unleashed by viewing a painting or sculpture, the smiles induced through hearing the notes of a song, or the tears produced by reading the prose of a poem. You might sum up those feelings as a “true human connection.” At Blessing, we understand the power of true human connection. It is how our employees describe their bond with patients and their loved ones. Delivering compassion and empathy is as important to our work as providing the right medication and performing the proper procedure. Our belief in the power of true human connection fuels our support of Arts Quincy and its work. Whether it’s a live performance, hands-on creative experiences or exhibit openings, Arts Quincy helps create true human connection that touches us all. We applaud and support that most worthy endeavor!

Individual Donor Spotlight Kim Kennedy Congratulations Quincy, for recently being named one of America’s most artistic towns for the second consecutive year by Expedia! I am proud to call Quincy home and I am humbled to be a part of this creative community! More than 40 years ago, my relationship with The Art Center began. I remember the excitement of making pottery at a young age. I learned patience as I waited for my ceramic bowl to return from the kiln. Holding that beautiful, blue and yes, misshapen bowl after all that time and effort gave me such a sense of accomplishment! This love of the arts, for many, begins as a child and continues throughout our entire life. Over the years I have been involved in the arts as a student, a volunteer, a committee member and currently serve as a board member. I believe it is important to keep the arts alive and strong for our youth through arts in education programming and experiences. Arts Quincy helps to create numerous opportunities for everyone to get involved in the arts. Please consider how you can support that mission today; I promise, you will get more out of it than you put in!
