LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Art Patrons: Quincy recently received national recognition as one of America’s Most Artistic Small Towns by Expedia’s Travelblog, and it’s easy to see why. Our city is bursting at the seams with opportunities to get involved with visual arts, music, theater, history and humanities. Arts Quincy is America’s First Arts Council and we are dedicated to making sure every citizen has access to the fine arts through the programming of the 55 Nonprofit Arts Partner Organizations that are featured in this directory. Whether you’re a professional, a hobbyist or someone with budding interest but no experience, there’s an arts organization that will welcome you! Our organizations’ commitment to providing broad access to the arts can be seen by the many free and low-cost arts opportunities offered throughout the year. As you read the contents of this magazine, the free and low cost events and activities are designated with these icons: FREE Look for free music concerts from Quincy’s Park Band, the Sunday Music Series, Blues in the District and the awardwinning Quincy Concert Band. Students under 18 years old (as well as many area college students) are admitted free to both Quincy Symphony and Quincy Civic Music Association events. Students can also apply for scholarships for classes from several organizations including the Quincy Art Center and the Quincy Community Theatre (QCT).

Quincy also boasts a robust festival calendar which includes the Dogwood Festival in the spring, QFest and Lincoln in the District in the summer; Art Fest, The Folklife Festival and Frontier Settlement Day in the fall, and Eagle Days in the winter. Each of these major festivals offer free or very low cost admission to the public. Add all of this to a great line up of museums, historical sites, the Quincy Public Library and more, and you can see that the Arts are a big part of what makes this community a great place to live, work and create! Arts Quincy is your one-stop-resource for “All the Arts!” Find the full calendar for all these events at artsquincy.org, follow us on Facebook and Twitter and sign up to get our full-color Arts Quincy magazine delivered to your home or business at artsquincy.org/AQMag. I invite you to look through this directory and learn more about all the ways you can get involved with the arts by being a participant, an audience member, a volunteer, an advocate or all of the above!

Quinsippi Needleworkers orgsites.com/il/quincyega 217-222-9250 Organized in 1977, Quinsippi Needleworkers has a long history of sharing the love of hand embroidery, educating others in embroidery techniques and preserving the heritage and art of needlework. The group meets monthly to share ideas and learn from each other. Several group classes are offered each year. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 pm in the lower level of First Union Congregational Church at 12th and Maine Streets. Membership in Quinsippi Needleworkers is open to anyone of any skill level who is interested in needlework. Beginners are always welcome. Whether someone is interested in learning a new embroidery technique or perfecting their favorite one, members will support them along the way. Techniques enjoyed by members include, but are not limited to, counted cross stitch, needlepoint, Hardanger, Swedish weaving and surface embroidery. In addition to stitching items for their own use, members have donated many hours to stitching items for others. Through the years, members have donated many items of stitchery to local organizations including ER Bears to Blessing Hospital, ornaments for the Quincy Symphony of Trees and bookmarks for students at Washington School. Members have taught stitching classes at the Quincy Public Library and have taught special classes for home– schooled children.

The organization has two ongoing outreach projects. One of these projects is the stitching and construction of Wee Care Gowns to be offered to parents who have experienced the loss of a child at birth. According to one member, “Stitching the Wee Care Gowns is very rewarding as we are lovingly producing beautiful items for precious little ones.” The second ongoing outreach project is providing stichery kits to the guests of Quincy Hospitality House. Guests often spend time at the house waiting for many hours and these kits give them something to occupy their time and help them relax. These community projects let people see the beauty and function of needlework. Members receive Needle Arts, a quarterly magazine, which features articles on the background and techniques of embroidery and needlework. Members also have opportunities to attend seminars, lectures, classes and workshops. Those who share the love of stitching can request additional information through the Quinsippi Needleworkers website at orgsites.com/il/quincyega or call 217-222-9250. 200 N. 8th Street, Quincy, IL qsoa.org 217-222-2856 You don’t have to travel to New York or Chicago to have a truly magical, moving and powerful musical experience. Since 1947, the Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association has been providing high quality symphonic performances right here in the Gem City. Audiences: The QSOA keeps admission prices low to allow all people to experience symphonic music. FREE Children 18 and younger are admitted free to all events. Tickets for major concerts are available prior to the event or at the door; season tickets offer a substantial savings over single ticket prices and may be purchased online or by contacting the QSOA office. The Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association (QSOA) has been providing the community with fine symphonic orchestral and choral music for over 70 years. Its mission is to provide organizations for local musicians to perform such music, and to create and support programs that encourage young musicians to continue fostering their interest and skills in symphonic and choral music. The association is comprised of the Quincy Symphony Orchestra, Quincy Symphony Chorus, Quincy Youth Orchestra and Quincy Youth Chorus. These groups present 12 concerts per year, including a family concert and in-school concerts for children. The Quincy Symphony Orchestra (QSO) is made up of over 80 musicians from the tri-state area. By participating in the symphony orchestra, members are given a creative outlet to learn, grow and share with one another as well as the community. The symphony orchestra performs about five concerts per year. Auditions for the QSO are held in August or occasionally by appointment. The group rehearses on Tuesday evenings from September through April. these concerts, students in grades 3-6 are introduced to symphonic music and the instruments of the orchestra. These concerts are often the catalyst that sparks a student’s interest in participating in their school music program! Like the orchestra, the Quincy Symphony Chorus gives its members a creative outlet to share and interact with other community members. The chorus performs three concerts annually, including a side-by-side with the symphony orchestra and youth choruses for either a spectacular season finale or holiday concert. New singers are welcome and encouraged to audition in August, December or by appointment. The Symphony Chorus rehearses on Monday evenings from September through March or April. The Quincy Area Youth Orchestra is a performing ensemble for musicians in grades 7-12. Many regional schools have no orchestra program, so this organization also gives band musicians a chance to play symphonic works alongside string musicians. The youth orchestra gives two performances each year, including a side-by-side piece with the QSO. Auditions for QAYO are held in late October and rehearsals are usually Sunday afternoons from late November to March. Scholarships are available to families with financial need. The Quincy Area Youth Chorus, which includes two performing groups, provides performance opportunities for student singers in grades 3-12. Students perform songs in many different styles and sometimes in foreign languages. These ensembles perform three times annually, including the side-by-side concert with the adult orchestra and chorus. Auditions for the QAYC are held in May, August and December. Rehearsals are Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons from September through March. Scholarships are available to families with financial need. The youth ensemble programs also provide educational field trips to see

professional orchestral and choral performances. Previous field trips have included the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Blue Man Group and numerous musicals around Springfield and St. Louis. The Youth Orchestra participates in the Heart of Illinois Youth Orchestra Festival. The Volunteer Organization, Encore! Symphony Volunteer Council, provides volunteer support at concerts and sponsors fundraisers to benefit the symphony and musical education programs. Encore also awards approximately $3,500 in music camp scholarships and performance scholarships each year and provides financial support for music education at Quincy’s two high schools. The annual Young Artists Competition/ Concert offers musicians in grades 10–12 the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Quincy Symphony Orchestra. This experience gives youth the chance to show their skills, get feedback and constructive criticism and prepare for a possible future in music. For more information about concerts, to purchase tickets or to audition for one of our performance groups, call 217-222-2856 or visit qsoa.org.

Quincy Park Band quincyparkband.com kwiemelt@quincynotredame.org FREE One of Quincy’s longest standing summer traditions is free community concerts brought to you by the Quincy Park Band (QPB.) The sounds of patriotic marches, light classical, big band, Broadway musical hits and more have been heard drifting on the breeze from Madison Park during the months of June and July every summer since the band was founded by Director Carl Landrum in 1948!

The QPB boasts a total roster of over 110 musicians ranging in age from 16 to 80+ years of age. Each concert features around 80 of these highlyskilled musicians whose careers and backgrounds are as varied as the community for which they perform. Several performers are music educators or other music professionals in the area, but just as often, you’ll find area students

and professionals who just enjoy keeping up with their instruments as hobbies. “We really encourage whole families to bring down a picnic dinner and make a night of attending a Quincy Park Band performance,” explains Director Keith Wiemelt. “I especially love seeing multiple generations attending together. Bring grandma and grandpa, mom and dad and all of the kids! This is just such a family-friendly fun and free thing to do and it can create a new tradition for your kids to carry on into the future.” Another great reason for families with young children to attend is that parents are often looking for fun ways to get away from screen-time that are easy for kids to enjoy. The band specifically tries to work in a variety of music to perform that appeal to both kids and adults. The Quincy Park Band is able to provide this free, high-quality entertainment because of generous corporate sponsors and donations from the general public. The concert schedule and information about the Quincy Park Band, including weather related cancellations or changes, can be viewed at quincyparkband.com or facebook.

If you’re a musician interested in playing with the band, no auditions are required. Email Director Keith Wiemelt at kwiemelt@quincynotredame.org or call 617-299-7153. Tax-deductible donations can be sent to Quincy Park Band, 1627 State St., Quincy, IL 62301.

HUMANITIES Underground Railroad Home of Dr. Richard Eells 415 Jersey St., Quincy, IL 217-223-1800 History comes to life at the Dr. Richard Eells house. This stately two story brick Greek-revival style home sits at present-day 4th and Jersey Streets. It holds a storied place in the history of the Underground Railroad. In 1842, Quincy had only been incorporated as a city for 2 years. Missouri was nearly the wild-western frontier of major settlements in the U.S. A strong tension had already gripped the nation that would eventually boil over into Civil War in the years that followed. Nowhere was this tension more palpable than in Quincy, a major river hub at the time, which sat at the border of the slave state of Missouri and the free state of Illinois. One hot summer night that August, a slave from Monticello, Missouri known only by his first name, Charley, stepped onto the Missouri side of the Mississippi

shoreline and began a swim for his life. Dr. Richard Eells and his wife, Jane, were on the other side of the river. Dr. Eells had been educated at Yale University and then moved to Quincy from Connecticut. He had established a successful medical practice, adopted two children, and built on an addition to his home by 1842. He was a well-respected member of the community and was a trustee of the Congregational Church of Quincy. As Charley dove into the mighty flowing river that night for a dangerous nearly mile long swim, few would have suspected that his intended destination would be the home of this prominent physician, but Charley would, as hundreds of slaves had before him, head for that doorstep with the hope that it would be the first stop on his way to freedom. FREE Hear the entire story of Dr. Richard Eells, Charley and their place in the history of the Underground Railroad by visiting the Dr. Richard Eells Home at 4th and Jersey. The home is open on Saturdays from 1-4 pm during the months of April through November. Group tours are available year-round.

The Eells home is maintained by a small group of dedicated volunteers. For more information on becoming a volunteer, leave a message at 217-223-1800.
