LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Art Patrons: I can hardly believe December is already here! It's been a beautiful year full of music, art, theater, dance and humanities, but now is that special time of year when magic is in the air and our local arts organizations really shine!

to hear St. Nicholas reading stories. Visual artists showcase their talents at galleries and shops all over town, and many sell their one-of-a-kind creations to arts patrons who know that a gift of art will be treasured by their loved ones for years to come. Fans pack local theaters, including those at Quincy Community Theatre and our local colleges, because they know that sometimes the best gifts are experiences that the whole family can enjoy together.

Festive garland is draped on the historic columns at the John Wood Mansion, and weekly candlelit tours provide a glimpse of Christmases past.

Local musical organizations including choirs, bands and orchestras ring in the holiday season throughout the community at events and perform joyous music that is near and dear to our hearts.

Twinkling lights and tinsel adorn majestic trees next to the grand staircase inside the Quincy Museum at the Newcomb-Stillwell Mansion and eager children gather

It is my fondest wish that the joy and wonder of the holiday season surrounds you and your entire family. I hope your traditions include attending the special

seasonal offerings of our talented local artists, musicians and other performers. And if you are still looking for that perfect present for your loved ones to unwrap, remember that season tickets, arts organization memberships and fine arts classes are the kinds of gifts that they'll enjoy in 2018 and beyond. On behalf of the board and staff at Arts Quincy and the entire fine arts community, we wish you and yours all the magic of the holidays and a new year full of the joy of the arts.

Your friend in the arts,

Laura Sievert Executive Director

Sunday Music Tradition!

SUNDAY MUSIC SERIES

Sunday, Jan. 28 at 4 pm Unitarian Church, 1479 Hampshire 217-228-2866 Usher in the new year with the gift that keeps on giving, Sunday Music! This free concert series happens once a month throughout the school year and there is no better time than now to enjoy one of the areas favorite ongoing music events! This January, Carol Mathieson and Leonora Suppan-Gehrich will mark their 42nd Annual New Year's performance with the Sunday Music Series (SMS). Carol Mathieson and Friends will join additional performers, professional musicians and educators from around the region to entertain you with solos, instrumental duets, trios, vocal ensembles and chamber music.

Mathieson, of Canton, Missouri, is known to the region for her involvement with Muddy River Opera Company, Quincy Civic Music Association and Quincy Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. She is Emeritus Professor of Music at Culver-Stockton College. She and Gehrich often entertain local audiences together and cherish their New Year's custom. As Mathieson recalls, it was quite an undertaking to perform those early concerts at the Unitarian Church in the 1970s. With rented a piano, volunteers and warm hearts, they made memorable recitals that SMS concert-goers have come to look forward to every year! She reminisced how those early concerts took place right after New Year’s Day. “Many area musicians probably remember freezing fingers and frosty breath as we rehearsed without much benefit from the ancient and finicky furnace. We hoped against the possibility of blizzards...hopes that were not always fulfilled.” Over the years the musical options expanded for SMS performers as the congregation acquired its own pianos and updated their heating system! Today, the church is one of the most beautiful settings in the area for chamber music.

(L-R) Leonora Suppan-Gehrich and Carol Mathieson

Mathieson says, "The new year for Sunday Music will begin with professional-caliber musicians performing together in a tradition that stretches back decades. It still enlivens the present, even as it honors the past."

THEATER

Find Love in the Theatre

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!

SHE LOVES ME Nov. 30 - Dec. 10 Quincy Community Theatre 1qct.org or 217-222-3209 Audiences from around the Tri-States are falling head-over-heels for She Loves Me, a sparkling romantic comedy about two people who work together but cannot stand one another! Luckily for them, both find solace in their anonymous romantic pen pals. When fate takes an unexpected turn over the Christmas season, the pair discovers that perhaps they’ve found love in the most unlikely of places! Featuring a lush, romantic score by the composers of Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me, which debuted in 1963, has long been hailed as one of the most charming musicals ever written. It has experienced a resurgence in popularity due to its recent revival on Broadway. During the rush of the holiday season, for both audience and the characters, this gift of love is the perfect present! The story in She Loves Me is based on a Hungarian play called Parfumerie by Miklós László. In addition to being adapted for musical theater, the storyline has been used in several famous films including in the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan box office hit You’ve Got Mail (1998), Judy Garland and Van Johnson’s In the Good Old

SHE LOVES ME Cast includes (front row, l-r) Elizabeth Mannhardt, Jasper Grossman, (second row, l-r) Adrienne Fisk, Hannah Komperda, Amber Martin, Jerilyn Dufresne, Julian AC King, Ziven Crist, (third row, l-r) Emily Dozier, Gretchen Wolfmeyer, Sage Mann, William Martin, Drew Quintero, Michael D. Summertime (1949), and James Stewart and Margaret Sullivan’s The Shop Around the Corner (1940.) And as is the case with its sister films, it is the characters of She Loves Me that create loyal fans of the show. At its heart, She Loves Me features very relatable and charming people.

Its leading man lives a very quiet and uneventful life while the leading lady is desperate for a job and looking for love in all the wrong places. “A community theatre production pulls in a diverse group of individuals,” says Brandon Thomsen, Artistic Director. “Through weeks of rehearsals and See Page 19

performances this eclectic group turns into a family. They care for each other and they respect one another. This dynamic echoes the characters in She Loves Me. The co-workers are so different from each other, and we follow how their relationships evolve and become something that neither one would have ever thought possible.” The hope the characters find and the magical transformations they undergo adds up to what the New York Times called a “daydream of the ordinary.” She Loves Me is under the direction of Thomsen, with music direction by Stacy Taylor, choreography by Alison Shafer, scenic design by Technical Director Lorne Kelley, costumes by guest designer Julian AC King and stage management by David Samuels. Tickets are $22 - $24. Performances are November 30 – December 3 and

ART EDUCATION

Sarah Phillips assists Maddison Sethaler (student) with a passe.

Let's Dance! Arts Quincy is excited to share a new column with our readers: Let's Dance! Dance is a way of making us feeling more alive and is an outlet for the body, mind and soul. We look forward to featuring more local dancers in future Arts Quincy magazines. The following is about a local dance instructor and how dance is an integral part of her daily life. If you know someone to be featured in this area please contact us at marketing@artsquincy.org. By Cheryl Loatsch

Dance has always been the way Sarah Phillips expresses her full spectrum of emotion. Happiness, anger, joy, melancholy and more all find its way into her movement. She uses her movements and the music to tell a compelling and beautiful story. Dance has been an integral part of Phillips’ story from her very first tendu. “I remember when I was as young as three years old, feeling free to follow not only the beat of the music but my own unique rhythm,” she recalled. "Strength and grace go hand-in-hand on the dancer’s stage, " she says. "This pairing also serves us well in our day-today endeavors. By accepting the outcome of daily events with grace and strength, one is able to persevere." The inner strength Phillips found through dance became her personal anchor and continues to serve her when the life’s challenges appear. For Phillips, the structure, focus and determination it takes to conquer the ballet barre has become a spiritual exercise. Barre techniques are some of the most important building blocks of all dance. Phillips sees the barre as a space where all dancers return and refresh their spirits. As an instructor and adult dancer, Phillips is now experiencing the joy of instilling the love of dance in her students. “There is no greater satisfaction than witnessing a child find the dancer within themselves,” she said. “My parents get the credit for encouraging me to dance. I see the pride they have in my dedication and journey as a dancer. The pride they have felt throughout my dance career is now magnified for me when I watch my students perform.” Phillips with Kyra Schuckman (student) doing a tilted attitude a la seconde. 24

Inspiring Hope And Healing Through The Arts Creative expression can help inspire a hopeful attitude, important for any kind of healing. Chaddock school in Quincy specializes in teaching and treating children who have histories that include extreme trauma and/or attachment-related difficulties. The school integrates art, music and literacy elements into their curriculum as part of their therapy. Recently, some of the students were able to participate in a three-day course led by Chaddock Choir Director Koretta Mayfield Sykes and local artist Stephanie Koscielski. The program combined music and visual art to help students express their emotions. The students were supplied paint brushes, pallets and canvases, and as different types of music played, they painted original pieces of art! “We listened to upbeat jazz during the class. If we wanted a different outcome in the paintings we would set the mood by playing specific music genres and creativity would flow based on what we listened to,” explained Mayfiel- Sykes. The final step of their painting was to put a musical notation on their artwork. The project was a natural extension of the students’ creativity. “I believe that art, dance, singing, and music are great ways to express yourself. I believe they are all very personal ways to share how you feel or view a matter,” Sykes shared. “The students could have told any story they wanted to through their paintings. Knowing these children’s struggles, stories and pasts, it is uplifting to see many positive pictures. There is even one featuring the word “Hope,” which warms your heart to see." says Sykes.

Photos submitted by Chaddock

At Chaddock, healing happens in a variety ways every day through programs designed to give kids the voice they need to heal and grow. Mercantile Bank was instrumental in funding the recent art program and some of the artwork will be displayed at the bank office at 33rd and Maine in Quincy.

Who Do You Think You Are?

Bring Your Family History to Life! Are you interested in preserving your family’s stories, roots and traditions? The Great River Genealogical Society is here to help aspiring family historians research their families and convey their unique genealogical narrative. Henry Pratt, President of the Great River Genealogical Society, has assembled some advice to help you write your own family history book. Using some simple principles of good research, organization and preparation, you can build a basic family tree and begin to assemble stories into a lasting legacy book that will be treasured for generations to come. 1. Plan your project. Decide on what you want to accomplish. Are your writing a memoir, an informal publication or a book? If you are just starting, the best advice is to start small! 2. Commit to a style and format. Review other legacy books and memoirs and choose a format to follow. Assembling and recording information should be done systematically. Utilize index cards, family group sheets and computer software. 3. Break your writing tasks into smaller, manageable pieces. Begin by recording your full name, birth and present age. Next record the full names of all your siblings and parents with their birthdate and place of birth. Basic facts about your family should include marriages, significant events and places of residency. Move on to the extended family and include both the paternal and maternal sides of the family. 4. Gather your materials. Collect and file census data, certificates, newspaper clippings, photos and other published materials to add supporting material for your writing. Using your library card, you can access a computer in the Illinois

Room at Quincy Public Library to search online records. The Herald Whig and local newspapers also keep digital copies of past issues that can be referenced. 5. Ask Relatives to Help. A key step in preserving your family’s past is to ask elders in the family about their recollections. They may also be able to provide names, dates and information to personal photos or keepsakes. Some researchers ask older family members to make an audio recording to better preserve these stories. 6. Look for themes. Create an ancestor timeline against historical events both on the local, national and world level. Examples of major historical events that may influence your story include war, politics, the Great Depression, etc. You may find themes of home and family, patriotism, faith, work and even cautionary tales. Identifying the historical background of your family will add depth to your history. 7. Write! After assembling the materials, begin to bring it all together. Enjoy this new adventure of recording the legacy of your loved ones! Begin with a blurb about yourself and build on it from there.

8. Review, edit and enhance. Details and context bring the story to life, and it’s important to make your writing clear, concise and focused. Ask a friend to review the writing to catch errors. 9. Publish, share and enjoy! Different historians choose to publish their stories in multiple ways. You can stay simple and just create a digital document that can be shared, or you can use a self-publishing service to create a bound hard or paperback edition that can be reprinted and ordered. Creating a book like this is a time-consuming process, but all of that hard work is worth it in the end when you can share your family’s history with the world. You may even inspire someone else to become a family historian!

Members of Great River Genealogical Society (GRGS) are available to assist in family searches on Tuesday mornings from 10 am – 12 pm in the Illinois Room at the library. The GRGS also welcomes new members and invite you to attend a monthly meeting at St. John’s Lutheran Church (3340 State Street) on the second Thursday of the month at 7 pm. Practical and Valuable Items Created By

Lifelong Woodworker S

ince high school, Terry Johnson had an interest in woodworking. He learned many skills from his father who also enjoyed the hobby and was an avid wood carver. Several of his father’s carved furniture pieces are treasured heirlooms in his home. In the 1990s, Johnson became a charter member of Quincy’s Woodworkers Guild and even served as the president of the organization for its first three years. “I really enjoy being part of the club because I can continue to learn skills from other woodworkers in the area. Plus I can share my knowledge with people who are new to the hobby,” Johnson says, “and the club is really excellent at welcoming people no matter what their skill level is. We take beginners and experts and everything in between!” Woodworking is a very popular hobby and can even be a lucrative profession. Many hobbyists take great pride making furniture or creating intricate pieces by carving, scrolling, sculpting and/or turning wood. Many woodworkers also enjoy tackling carpentry and home improvement projects or performing restoration work. Terry has tried his hand at many different types of woodwork including making original items from scratch and restoring worn wooden objects to their former splendor. He also is skilled at woodturning and has created more than 200 bowls, Lazy Susans and cutting boards. All of his items are produced from high-quality oak, walnut and hickory. His wife, Kitty, has also gotten involved and has even restored antiques herself. One of her favorite projects was refinishing a 150-year-old chair. “It’s good my wife is supportive,” laughs Johnson, “because my workbench has to share garage space with her car!” The Quincy Woodworkers Guild welcomes new members of any skill level. Wright's artwork is characterized by whimsical design and quirky messages. Wright keeps it simple with mostly black and white images with pops of bright color. Business Donor Spotlight

No More Excuses!

The Quincy Society of Fine Arts (now Arts Quincy) anchors our community to the very best of the heart and soul of human creativity. As a school-age child, I remember thinking anything that was connected to the Society of Fine Arts was cool: cool people, theatre, visual art, music and museums. Today the “cool” has exploded into options and offerings to meet every child, man or woman’s creative expectations. Arts Quincy is a gift to all of us who live here and enriches our community daily; it is viewed by those who visit or choose to relocate here as an asset. The educational advantages provided through Arts Quincy are of benefit to children through many of their partner organizations. “Arts Dollars” is a program Cheryl Loatsch Studio has been involved with for decades. The funds provided to area schools make it possible for a variety of artists to expose students to their type of art. Over the years, staff at the Studio have provided area schoolchildren the opportunity to move with music. This year, the Studio staff have combined nutrition education with movement when we visit schools in an attempt to give our presentation even more value. We always leave a session with children excited about the next time! Cheryl Loatsch Studio and our members are grateful for the opportunities and enjoyment provided to us by Arts Quincy.

Arts Quincy Business Memberships Memberships start at $100 YOUR investment in our community through Arts Quincy helps to support cost-effective, national award-winning programs that include: • Direct funds to arts organizations and area teachers • Student and Community Arts Awards • TV & Radio Marketing • Services to 55 nonprofit partner organizations and hundreds of individual artists For more information visit artsquincy.org or call 217-222-3432.

The Board of Directors and staff of Arts Quincy, along with our 55 partner organizations would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to all who contribute as individual or business members, sponsors or media partners. Your support helps ensure a thriving fine arts community which cultivates cultural and economic opportunities for artists and audiences throughout our region.

Individual Donor Spotlight Mary Ellen & Alan Stiegemeier My husband and I are longtime Quincy residents. Former teachers in the public schools, we expected to stay a few years and then move on. The pull of Quincy was such that many years later we are still here! From the beginning, we were impressed by the emphasis and place of importance given to the arts. In a town this size, the variety of artistic experiences is unique. Having a symphony orchestra, an opera company, a theater, an art museum and many others all closely within reach—truly amazing! I am a longtime member of the Symphony Chorus and play in a recorder group, The Early Music Society. Alan, while not a performer, is a knowledgeable and avid supporter of music. In our fragmented world, having access to living artists creating art is important as never before. Support of the arts is crucial to their survival. Arts Quincy serves a vital function in keeping us informed and connected and deserves our support. We are proud to support Arts Quincy and encourage you to join us!
