When COVID-19 hit Westchester, the cultural community did what it does best – it rose to the occasion and creatively pivoted offering virtual arts programming including: livestreamed concerts, virtual artist tours, digital art exhibitions and hands-on art workshops for kids. Devastated by canceled events and lost sponsorships, the arts need your support more than ever before to recover from this crisis and to begin the reopening process. 2020 Emily & Eugene Grant Arts Patron Award Pelham residents Mauro and Camille Romita have dedicated themselves to philanthropic endeavors, including the arts. While President of Castle Oil Corporation, Mauro dedicated his time to numerous charitable institutions such as Sound Shore Medical Center, the College of New Rochelle and St. Joseph’s Seminary. Camille’s passion for the arts and their power to transform local communities compelled her to join a small group of inspiring women who took the Pelham Art Center from an early experiment into a thriving hub of culture and learning. She served as its President for over ten of the most formative years of the organization’s 50-year history. Camille and Mauro Romita instilled in their children the same sense of community responsibility and civic duty that they learned from their own immigrant parents: Carla, a successful lawyer and businesswomen, has served on the boards of many philanthropic and educational institutions; Michael, a former U.S. Department of Justice litigator and newly appointed President and CEO of the Westchester County Association, has been appointed to numerous non-partisan County boards and local charities; and Paul, has channeled his passion for world affairs into a career assisting global diplomats at the United Nations.

Pablo Mayor 2020 Artist Award
For nearly two decades, pianist and composer Pablo Mayor has brought the rhythm and style of his native Colombia to New York City, the Hudson Valley and beyond. The Tarrytown resident is one of the leading voices in contemporary Colombian jazz – not surprising, given his fresh approach to music and the way he introduces musical concepts to younger audiences. Mayor’s sound combines his formal jazz studies with his passion and knowledge for Colombian salsa and Cuban charanga. His ensemble, Folklore Urbano, has performed around the globe, but he always makes sure to bring their energy and rhythm back to our Westchester community, performing regularly at JazzFest White Plains and the Jazz Forum in Tarrytown. In addition, Mayor, with Co-Artistic Directors Anna Povich de Mayor and Daniel Fetecua, manages a residency program called Cumbia for Kids, which presents weekly workshops for children. The workshops explore the four geographical regions of Colombia, each of which has their own distinct music and dance traditions, instruments and culture. Students learn basic drum patterns, Spanish language through song, and creative movement inspired by Colombia’s diverse expressive traditions.

Blue Door Art Center 2020 Art Organization Award
Blue Door Art Center (BDAC) will receive the Arts Award for its dedication to presenting art of all varieties created by Westchester artists to local audiences. In more than 300 exhibitions throughout the county, BDAC has displayed the works of more than 800 artists from the local and regional community, besides its own eight to nine shows a year at its downtown Yonkers gallery space. Dynamic arts programming, including monthly open mic events, jazz performances and children’s activities, takes place at the Center in addition to free workshops at local establishments like Philipse Manor Hall and the YMCA. Community access to the arts led BDAC to bring public art to Yonkers, where they have commissioned mosaic planters at the Metro North station, an outdoor sculpture near City Hall and the creation of a series of “art banners” displayed throughout the downtown area. BDAC, which was founded by Luis Perelman and Julie Cousens, continues to build arts participation through the “First Thursdays” Downtown Yonkers Gallery Hop. This event attracts hundreds of attendees each month, when galleries – some enlivened by live performances – extend their hours so that visitors can explore the Yonkers’ art scene through self-guided walking tours.

City of New Rochelle 2020 Community Award
As the former home of Norman Rockwell and E. L. Doctorow, the City of New Rochelle lives up to its artistic roots. Most recently, it has launched a 10-year revitalization effort that includes the arts as a major component. The plan recognizes arts and culture as a strength of the City and its quality of life, in part by making the southern neighborhoods of the City more walkable and accessible. The initiative includes artist housing, an 8,000 square-foot blackbox theater, artistic displays in vacant store fronts and a rooftop performance space. In 2019, eight dramatic murals curated by Street Art for Mankind were installed downtown, bringing new vibrant energy to the City’s streetscape. The two-mile walking tour of new works includes a massive ten-story painting on the side of the Radisson hotel. The City of New Rochelle has embraced public art, including murals that envelop its downtown and a series of commissioned sculptures created for the City’s 325th anniversary. Through its partnership with the New Rochelle Council for the Arts, it also supports the robust Summer Sounds concert series in Hudson Park and the weeklong arts festival, ArtsFest. Other arts organizations that contribute to the artistic life of the City are the New Rochelle Art Association, New Rochelle Opera, Westchester Symphony and New Rochelle Public Library with its Ossie Davis Theater.

A-Chord with Kids 2020 Education Award
A-Chord with Kids is a youth-run music program through which one young generation shares its talent with a future generation. This youth-to-youth peer program, which was founded in 2012 by Austin Weber, Chase, Alex and Cameron Goddard, students at Rye Country Day School, consists of volunteers who help children build confidence and self-esteem through music education and mentorship. The program’s students are members of the Carver Center in Port Chester, a community-based organization dedicated to meeting the needs of underprivileged youth. During the A-Chord program, these youth are introduced to different musical genres, learn music theory and sight-reading, and explore instruments with one-on-one instruction. They are also instructed on different types of musical ensembles, from orchestra to jazz band. The young volunteers in this program prove that anyone, no matter their age, can make a significant difference in their community.

Ossining Public Library 2020 Sophia Abeles Education Award
The Ossining Public Library offers the Westchester community frequent, affordable and direct access to arts programming. From concerts to film screenings, the Library’s Camille Budarz Theater is home to numerous programs throughout the year, and the art gallery features the work of local artists, with new exhibits each month. Now in its 125th year, the library has served the Ossining community through two World Wars, the Great Depression, and an unprecedented boom in technology. Today, the library offers a diverse calendar of events. Recent happenings have included a drumming circle for teens, a theatrical performance about Anne Frank, a weekly “I Heart Art” program that encourages children to explore art, and live jazz performances. There is also family story-time, memoir writing, art workshops and more. Not only does the library provide the community with arts programming, it also embraces the community within those programs. For instance, the Ossining Union Free School District is featured in an exhibition each May.

2020 Lawrence Salley Photography Award In his work, award-winning artist and master printer Arnold Kastenbaum makes no attempt to depict an object as it naturally appears. Rather, his goal is to create a new object that did not exist before, presenting an alternative view of commonplace, mundane objects such as light bulbs or door knobs. As a result, his photographs become the object without regard to the subject matter. Kastenbaum works exclusively in a traditional black and white film and archival gelatin silver materials, personally printing all images using a darkroom process. His love for photography stems from his teenage years – a passion that, after a long hiatus, was rekindled in recent years. He has since participated in numerous juried exhibitions at galleries and museums in Westchester County and New York City. He also teaches a personal vision workshop at SUNY Purchase College and was recently featured in Westchester Magazine as one of the County’s prominent visual artists.
