A Benefit Concert for ArtsWestchester Ft. The Wallflowers

Page 1

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2024

FROM THE CEO

Dear Friends of ArtsWestchester:

Thank you! Thank you for sharing your love of the arts. Thank you for dancing, singing, painting, and writing alongside us. For tapping your feet to a beat or pausing to reflect in front of a sculpture. We know you feel it: the arts are the heartbeat of our communities that bring people together in deep and enduring ways.

ArtsWestchester is thrilled to bring The Wallflowers back to The Capitol Theatre for this very special benefit concert. Your sponsorships, ticket purchases, donations, and raffle tickets all support ArtsWestchester in spreading the magic of the arts into every community across the region. This promises to be an unforgettable evening, honoring one of the arts’ biggest champions, Deputy Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins.

Thank you for your support of the arts and of our cultural community.

Sincerely,

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

How can you beat live music? Listening to live music fires our brains and opens our hearts. Music transports us from the ordinary to the extraordinary. At ArtsWestchester, we support musicians and promote live music events throughout Westchester and Rockland counties all year long. We also offer art exhibitions in our gallery, arts education with our traveling ArtsMobile, and financial support for artists and arts organizations through our grants programs. All of this made possible through your generosity and that of our government and corporate partners such as our honoree, Ken Jenkins.

We are grateful to all of you for your support of this event and of ArtsWestchester, particularly the ArtsWestchester Board and the incredible staff for all their hard work on behalf of the arts.

With appreciation,

Kathleen Reckling (photo credit: Stefan Radtke)

ARTSWESTCHESTER

ArtsWestchester’s mission is to create an equitable, vibrant and sustainable Westchester County in which the arts are integral to, and integrated into, every facet of life.

OUR CORE VALUES

The arts are for everyone, amplifying the multi-ethnic and culturally diverse voices within our community. The arts offer opportunities for advancement and personal growth. The arts are a catalyst for systemic change, economic development and community empowerment. The arts create life-affirming experiences, celebrating differences and finding shared values.

OUR COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL JUSTICE

As ArtsWestchester looks to the future, and in recognition of the current needs of the communities we serve, we reaffirm and further commit to advancing social justice through our policies and practices. We acknowledge that this work is ongoing and commit to enacting a strategic vision that is proactive and responsive in shaping a just, fair and equitable Westchester.

OUR PROGRAMS

ArtsWestchester supports a cultural community that generates more than $182 million in economic impact for Westchester County. Among our services, we:

• award more than $2.3 million in grants annually to artists and arts groups.

• support more than 150 arts organizations.

• bring artists into Westchester schools and community centers.

• build arts audiences and market the arts throughout Westchester and beyond.

• showcase artists through exhibitions and performances.

• transform communities through public art.

ARTSWESTCHESTER PROUD TO HONOR:

Ken Jenkins

DEPUTY WESTCHESTER COUNTY EXECUTIVE

Ken Jenkins, Deputy Westchester County Executive, has been a longtime leader and supporter of arts and culture. He has helped to expand the county’s vision of the arts to include diverse forms of creative expression from the grassroots communities of Westchester.

“For decades, Ken has worked to strengthen the public-private partnership between the arts and government by supporting innovative programs such as ArtsWestchester’s Art$WChallenge Grant program and ArtsMobile services,” said ArtsWestchester CEO Kathleen Reckling. “He recognizes arts and culture in Westchester as a critical economic engine and has always worked with ArtsWestchester to ensure the accessibility and diversity of the arts for residents, particularly those in our underserved communities.”

Ken’s community involvement includes service on the boards of the Greyston Foundation, the United Way, the Westchester County District Attorney’s Community Advisory Committee, Westchester County Crime Stoppers and the Community Planning Council of Yonkers. He was President for over five years of the Yonkers Branch of the NAACP. He also has served as President of the Yonkers Community Action Program.

Art is a universal language that brings all people together, and therefore is an essential element to a vibrant Westchester County. We look forward to the County’s continued support of cultural programs and services throughout Westchester.”

Rock ‘n’ roll is often hard to define, or even to find, in these fractured musical times. But to paraphrase an old saying, you know it when you hear it.

And you always hear it with The Wallflowers. For the past 30 years, the Jakob Dylan-led act has stood as one of rock’s most dynamic and purposeful bands – a unit dedicated to and continually honing a sound that meshes timeless songwriting and storytelling with a hard-hitting and decidedly modern musical attack. That signature style has been present through the decades, baked into the grooves of smash hits like 1996’s Bringing Down the Horse as well as more recent and exploratory fare like 2012’s Glad All Over.

Even so, in recent years, Dylan – The Wallflowers’ founding singer, songwriter and guitarist – has repeatedly stepped outside of his band, first with a pair of more acoustic and rootsy records, 2008’s Seeing Things and 2010’s Women + Country , and then with the 2018 film Echo in the Canyon and the accompanying soundtrack, which saw him collaborate with a host of artists classic and contemporary, from Neil Young and Eric Clapton to Beck and Fiona Apple.

Dylan’s vision has always been the core of the Wallflower’s music. How he chooses to express that vision, however, is what makes a song a Wallflowers song. “I usually just let the songs tell me what kind of arrangements they need,” he says. “And if they’re asking for full-band electric arrangements, then that’s what the Wallflowers provide.”

The Wallflowers have sold over ten million albums internationally. They have won two Grammy Awards: Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Rock Song for One Headlight . Their most recent album is titled Exit Wounds.
