The opening of Circa on Jellico Circa on Jellico opened on the Rosebank, Johannesburg skyline last Thursday 05 November 09 It is a unique, oval-shaped art gallery called Circa, commissioned by Mark Read, of the well-known Everard Read, and designed by architect Pierre Swanepoel. The oval building has a fascinating appearance and offers an exciting, new space to artists, especially who work with large formats. It also boasts one of the best roof-top views of the northern Johannesburg landscape, in the direction of the Sterkfontein caves, which echo Mark Read’s interest in fossils and natural science. At a prestigious opening event on Thursday 5 November, Mark Read introduced the intriguing building to some 280 invited guests. The first artists to be exhibited at the new gallery are highly acclaimed Karel Nel and Willem Boshoff.
