espite this year being a financially challenging one, we at the Art Times have had the biggest growth year ever. In the danger of blowing one’s own trumpet - this past year we have tripled our online social media reach along with online marketing in the form of Facebook and Google ad exposure. To this regard we aim to not merely sell advertising to our clients but partner with them to use their budgets to create more business via building quality online platforms and affordable reach- that promotes their business consistently through various platforms.
CONTACT ART TIMES Tel: 021 424 7733 P.O Box 428 Rondebosch 7701
In addition to our online growth we are now established through “NewBlood” in over 180 top SA schools that have art as a subject. My personal response is that much of the work is of a very high standard, also the work deals with real issues that the youth are trying to find answers to or are grappling with. Our next years target is to be able to bring NewBlood into less advantaged schools and link them up to our strong structure in order to get a broader view and promote art from a wider range of schools throughout South Africa. If you want to treat yourself go to www.arttimes.co.za/newblood to be inspired.
ART DIRECTOR Brendan Body

This year we also launched ArtGo.co.za - we are proud to say that after 6 months we have got the most comprehensive listings of SA on a stable sustainable model. We hope, again that you would pop in and use our comprehensive art event listings. Lastly and most importantly I would like to thank you the reader for all your support to The Art Times. If it wasn’t for you – we wouldn’t be here. Our readers give us a great thrill of being able to produce the best hip and sustainable art publication. We love what we do and I would like to thank you for your ongoing support. A Blessed Christmas as well as a Prosperous and Creative New Year Gabriel Clark-Brown

PHATSHOANE HENNEY NEW BREED ART COMPETITION ‘Nkululeko Nkebe crowned overall winner for 2018’ Photos: Eye Poetry Photography
O
n the night of 8 November 2018 Nkululeko Nkebe was announced as the overall winner of the 2018 Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition at a prestigious awards ceremony held at Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein. Nkebe, an art student at the Central University of Technology (CUT), was honoured for his visually striking work, “Youth ‘Slaves’ to education”, that comments on the struggles of youth and education and the fine line that exists between finding work or slipping into a life of crime and poverty, driven by economic necessity. The panel of four judges agreed that with the exceptional use of pen on paper, and through outstanding composition and execution, the artist has visually and movingly invoked the viewer to consider the frail economic position of today’s youth in relation to the demand for education. He was awarded R50,000 in prize money. The Runner-Up Award and R20,000 in prize money went to Katlego Mogoera, also a student studying art at the CUT, for her striking photographic image entitled “Girl balancing cigarette on lips”. In what is a first for the competition, the judges’ views as well as those of the public have converged, with Mogoera receiving nearly 400 votes to claim the Public Choice Award as well, and receiving an additional R10,000 in prize money.
The two R10,000 Merit Awards, with which the judges had a bit more leeway to identify, support and incentivise artists that they felt showed promise, talent and the ability to take their art to the next level, went to Petra Schutte, former art student from the University of the Free State, and Xola Sello, another art student from the CUT, respectively. In her work “Expiration of my environment” she visually through the use of pigment ink, pastel and pencil - portrayed her message about the impact of the ever-increasing accumulation of waste on our environment. In turn Sello was awarded the other Merit Award for his work “My economy” in which he innovatively used pen and pastel on paper to comment on the state of the South African economy in a collection of four drawings. Above outlined five winners were chosen by die official competition judges out of a total of 45 top Free State artists whose 54 works formed part of this year’s official Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition exhibition. The judging panel consisted of Dr Same Mdluli, Manager of the Standard Bank Art Gallery in Johannesburg, Lawrence Lemaoana, renowned Johannesburg artist, Karen Brusch, former Director of Gallery MOMO Johannesburg and founder of the Free State Art Collective, as well as Pauline Gutter, renowned Free State-based South African painter and 2013 winner of the ABSA L`Atelier competition. KWAAI
A celebratory exhibition of the multifaceted coloured identity. Written by Nicole Ludolph Curated by Christina Fortune
C
ontrary to the Barbs view that a rose by any other name is still a rose, is simply not true when it comes to identity politics. Labels unfortunately capture our history and are unconscious indicators of our place in society’s hierarchy. Despite his assertion that labels do matter, Lindsey Johnson (writer and broadcaster) believes that we should not allow others to define us. “We must be free to assert our own humanity and free to choose to define ourselves as we see fit. And if that means being coloured and proud, so be it. If it also means identifying as black, African or mixed race – whether only some or part of these labels or all at once – then so be it too.”(1) KWAAI, this year’s summer exhibition at Eclectica Galleries, curated by Christina Fortune, seeks to explore the question of “colouredness”. The purpose of the exhibition is not to provide any answers, but to open a conversation and celebration around ideas of the coloured identity and the lived experiences of those who carry it. It will attempt to shine a light on the continued hardships faced by coloured people as a consequence of Apartheid, and simultaneously contribute positively to the coloured community. This exploration will cover such concepts as legacy, family, fragility and dispossession, as well as humour, joy and collective empowerment. The artist who are exhibiting do not necessarily label themselves with the term but understand that their lived experience is affected by it. The exhibition theme is one the director of Eclectica, Shamiela Tyer, understands intimately. She has experienced both pre and post-apartheid prejudices directed towards the coloured community in Cape Town. Her aim with this exhibition is not just to start a fruitful exploration of the coloured identity, but also to educate other racial and cultural groups about “colouredness”.

With the participation of the artists, through an open a dialogue that catalysis understanding of who we are, some means of healing can be provided. Gary Frier, one of the exhibiting artists, is using portraiture to look at the concepts of consciousness and physical place. His piece of a Khoi woman superimposed over a section of a JH Pierneef painting is a “comment on colonist tradition” and on “the dispossession of culture and land.” Stephené Conradie’s sculptures take commonplace objects found in working class homes, with which she suggests could provide an important insight into understanding identity formation through studying what people attach value to and how they create meaning in the private spheres of their homes via objects. The work she displays in this exhibition forms part of her larger body of work called “Ordentlikheid: a creolised object”. Conradie explores the link between how people categorise and arrange objects in their homes; and colonization, slavery and segregation. She investigates the material culture that results from displacement and cultural influences. Rory Emmett explains his reproduction of old family photographs as an interest “in the convergence of pigmentation and identity”. He uses “colouredness” as a medium to make sense of systems of classification - and to deconstruct

them. In facing these systems, which for the most part still exist, he aims to reveal the absurdity of rigid schema and the difficulty of life under these circumstances. His work is at once a display of joyful moments experienced by ordinary South Africans and a constructive critique of the “Rainbow Nation” concept. Coloured identity has historically been measured in terms of whiteness and blackness. One of the ways in which this is apparent is through beauty standards, particularly related to hair texture. Kirsten Arendse explores the idea of control and conditioning within how these standards lead labels like “kroeskop” and “bossiekop”, terms that “negatively governed the appearance of non-European individuals for many years in efforts to other, segregate and demean”. Other exhibiting artists include Joshua Williams, Hasan Essop, Mikhailia Petersen, QUEEZY and more. They, with the Eclectica team, have come together to work towards channeling nuanced narratives to achieve progressive representation and community building – which is why a portion of the sales of the works will go directly towards the community various organizations, such as Cedar High and Eduskeight. Join us in our aims through and beyond this exhibition, as we continue through workshops, campaigns, activism.

aking a case for the value of art production in the realm of higher education and the future, the Stellenbosch University Museum will host a unique, prestige group exhibition in celebration of the University’s Centenary. More than 60 artists will be represented.
“Forward? Forward! Forward...”, opening on 5 December in the stately museum building, is the result of an ambitious open call to artists earlier to propose artworks addressing the future of higher education, locally and in Africa, and reimagining the future of Stellenbosch University. According to the curators, Ulrich Wolff and Elizabeth Miller-Vermeulen, the response has delivered an intriguing range of exciting works, touching numerous themes in a variety of media. More than 250 innovative and compelling proposals, serving as catalysts for debate and engagement with the future of the university and education were submitted. Artists interpreted the theme to address such issues as identity and cultural perspectives, mentorship, literacy, fields of knowledge, humanto-human connectivity, language, campus power structures and social systems. WOLE LAGUNJU Yoruba Remixed
EBONY/CURATED 6th Dec 2018
Y
oruba Remixed by Wole Lagunju opens at EBONY/CURATED Cape Town on December 6th. This solo exhibtion is the multi-award winning Nigerian artist’s first in South Africa. Lagunju’s hybrid paintings of traditional Gelede masks are juxtaposed with images of modern women in the Western world and redefine the forms and philosophies of Yoruba visual art and design. He re-imagines and transforms cultural icons appropriated from the Dutch Golden and Elizabethan ages interspersed with elements from the Western world of the fifties and sixties. Lagunju’s cultural references, mined from the eras of colonisation and decolonisation of the African continent, critique the racial and social structures whilst simultaneously evoking commentaries on power, femininity and womanhood. Lagunju focuses particularly on the Gelede festival and the masks relating to it. Performed annually in Yoruba communities, the Gelede Festival focuses on celebrating women, their physical attributes, sacred powers and motherhood. Importantly the rituals are performed almost exclusively by males as a way of appeasing females in a patrilineal community. Central to the Gelede rituals are the elaborate wooden masks perched precariously on the heads of the performers, each mask meticulously carved to resemble men, women and animals in various guises. Enveloped in vibrant costumes and masks the performers both entertain and enlighten the community. They tell the oral histories of the Yoruba people through song and dance as well as rituals to appease and praise the life-giving force of the female deity. In Lagunju’s paintings, the masks replace the heads of the subjects and occupy a definitory and pivotal role within the composition. By replacing the head with a mask, Lagunju is referring not only to the Gelede rites but also to the Yoruba notion of ‘ori’. Literally meaning ‘head’, ‘ori’ refers to the larger Yoruba metaphysical idea that highlights the ‘ori’ as the seat of the life force in the physical world and connection to the supernatural realm. In other words, the head represented by the Gelede mask in the painting becomes a visual representation of a person’s destiny, ‘ase’ (West African philosophical concept of selfdetermination/power to change one’s destiny) and their life force.
In doing this, I mean to critique racial and cultural stereotypes and ideology. These are values and stereotypes that generate assumptions of a dominant cultural prerogative and singular historical perspective within issues of power, gender and identity
“I have chosen, therefore, to celebrate the masks by making visual compositions of ‘new’ Gelede masquerades dressed in the ceremonial regalia of the Western world.
In this exhibition, I have also chosen to appropriate imagery from the fifties and sixties, Euro-American era. An era which signifies the birth of the African American civil rights movement, the age of the counterculture, the rise of feminism and the flower power movement. In this way, I choose to celebrate womanhood and femininity at a definitive historical period of liberation, decolonization and African independence.” Through his bold paintings, Lagunju evokes the partly didactic and partly celebratory rites as in the Gelede Festival.
“In this exhibition, I have also chosen to appropriate imagery from the fifties and sixties, Euro-American era. An era which signifies the birth of the African American civil rights movement, the age of the counterculture, the rise of feminism and the flower power movement.” 32

By bringing the traditional Glede masks into the realm of contemporary discourse surrounding African art he is cementing the importance of vital aspects Yoruba culture whilst simultaneously educating the public. Lagunju’s unique blending of traditional masks as well as contemporary imagery mined from the Western culture also acknowledges the challenges of globalization and impact of the West on African traditional arts but also celebrates the dynamism of Yoruba culture that can absorb and reinterpret these influences. ---Wole Lagunju is a 1986 graduate of Fine Arts and graphic design at the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria. He is an accomplished illustrator, graphic designer, installation artist and painter. Lagunju was awarded a Phillip Ravenhill Fellowship by the UCLA in 2006 and a Pollock Krasner award in 2009. He currently lives in the United States.

GEORGE’S WORLD
“SOLO” An exhibition of new work by George Coutouvidis Prince Albert Gallery 14 December - 19 January www.princealbertgallery.co.za Story: Carl Becker
38 The Mayor of Barnet, oil on canvas, 700 x 580mm
G
eorge Coutouvidis taught for 18 years at Rhodes Art School. He has lived in Prince Albert for 15 years. His life and art are free of clutter or status anxiety. He walks across the road every day to his studio and paints. This is his first solo show in a commercial gallery.
The garden outside George Coutouvidis’ studio in Prince Albert needs no water. Tall metal stems shoot up out of the ground, bearing curious buds. They once were rusty old kettles, ancient sardine tins and bicycle rims. Now they’re delightful floral wonders that thrive in the arid Karoo. We’re being subtly prepared for what we will find inside the studio: irony, humour and gentle yet firm instruction. We enter through an old barn door, a little step below ground level. My eyes, which are used to the bright outside light, take a moment to adjust. In this moment, before I’m aware of the paintings, I register the sweet smell of linseed oil and genuine turpentine. I’m one of the lucky few to have a preview of George’s new work, and there are twenty or more oil paintings on the walls and floor of the studio. I recognise some of the familiar Coutouvidis subjects: images from Pop culture, from the Old Masters and colonial Africa. Be Afraid of No Man, oil on canvas, 700 x 600mm

Cultural collision, memory, identity – this is well- worn territory, from Doris Lessing to Kentridge, but Coutouvidis’ sensibility is unique. Global culture put confident Europeans into Africa. They rode across ancestral land with their gin and tonics, displacing people and killing animals for sport. Animals abound in George’s art, from sharks and elephants to Barbara Cartland’s lapdog. The struggle between man and Nature, a favourite theme of Romantic art, is here too. But George can’t help reminding us that modernity swept all before it. The prancing eighteenth- Century horse is supplanted by the inane domesticity of Donald Duck. There he goes, waddling his way into Conrad’s Congo. Alongside hangs a small painting of two courting Impala, oblivious to the bomber overhead. George’s art doesn’t fit neatly into our usual ideas about abstraction, figuration, or landscape. It has nothing to do with fashion, or with other painters around him. He takes a long view of art history and of humanity. The references in his art are Gainsborough, Rembrandt and even the forgotten man of American art, Winslow Homer. He clearly admires the breadth of their subject matter, the idea that art should deal with big human questions. Survival, not the reality- show kind, but as in the trenches of World War 1, is a recurring theme. Fascinated by calamity and human folly, his mindset is more Goya, less the cool detachment of contemporary art.
“George’s art doesn’t fit neatly into our usual ideas about abstraction, figuration, or landscape. It has nothing to do with fashion, or with other painters around him. He takes a long view of art history and of humanity.” Coronation Park, oil on canvas 700 x 600mm

(Detail) The Ebola Hunters, 700 x 600mm
On the desk in his studio there are old art magazines, with titles like” The Old Masters” and “Great Art of the Past”, which date from the early 1960s. They were meant to educate the wider English public about the grand tradition of European art. The colour reproductions are often dull or slightly off –key. These are part of George’s image bank. It is two years since I’ve visited, and the reference section is much the same. I notice there are re-visits of drawings from several years ago.” Yes,” says George, “I’m happy to return to familiar themes, to find different angles on them. You don’t need to frantically search for new stuff all the time.” Perhaps they hark back to a less distracted time, a time of getting on with what one had. Coutouvidis is a master of several things. His drawing is assured and absolutely economical: he can suggest the gesture or incident with the minimum of marks. As any master should, he makes it look easy. But I know how often he will erase and re-work a thing until it’s just right. That “just –right-ness” is about meaning as much as technique. The works have a certain luminosity achieved through the patient build – up of many transparent glazes. A painting may take years to resolve. That requires patience, sitting it out for the right moment. Ken and Barbie Riding the Wave, oil on canvas 700 x 550

THE ARTS MAP 2019
Bringing art lovers and art together for 30 years
3
0th Annual edition of Mapmyway to show you the way to art, craft and antiques in and around Cape Town
The first Arts + Crafts Map appeared in 1989! That first edition was designed by Jenny Sorrel, editor of the iconic ADA Magazine that focused on Art, Design and Architecture. Jenny and her ADA Magazine creative team continued to design the Arts & Crafts Map, and a series of special interest maps, for many years.
The 2019 print edition is available at Cape Town Tourism Visitor Information Centres, including Cape Town International, from all Iziko Museums, and all the listings on the map. The print map can also be found at leading hotels and guest houses.
More recently the maps were designed by Design Infestation who also helped to develop the MapMyWay website www.mapmyway.co.za. The 2019 ARTS + CRAFTS & Antiques Map is designed by Justin Caris of Rocket House. The Arts + Crafts Map is an established and dependable guide to the Cape Town cultural scene. Well known artist, Peter Clarke, even used the map in one of his ‘fan’ series of artworks. “In 1989, tourism was a concept rather than a reality,” comments Philip Todres, the founder of the map. “But the Arts + Crafts Map soon established itself as an invaluable guide to finding your way around the art scene in Cape Town and surrounds.” Today, the Arts + Crafts Map is available digitally as part of the MapMyWay website www. mapmyway.co.za. The website promotes the idea of informing you WHAT the location is, WHY it’s special, and importantly, WHERE to find it. The emphasis has always been to provide informed and accurate information about each listing on the map. The website has also introduced ‘Curated Routes’. So, for example, Fagmee Jacobs, who runs the Heritage Outreach and Education Projects in the City of Cape Town’s Heritage Department, has curated the Cape Town City Heritage Walk, that reflects the Mother City’s diverse heritage.

Book Review
CONSTANCE: ONE ROAD TO TAKE By Gavin Younge
Constance: One Road to Take. The Life and Photography of Constance Stuart Larrabee (1914-2000). Peter Elliott. 2018. Softcover, $ 29 USD. Ebook, $ 4.98 USD. Available on Amazon worldwide. This new book gives an insight into the world and work of Constance Stuart Larrabee (hereafter, CSL). She was South Africa’s only woman war correspondent. She documented life on the gold mines and the women and children left to fend for themselves in the countryside. Among her memorable black and white images we have, for instance, a young child reaching out to grab her mother’s beaded mace (Ndebele Design) and a poignant view of a young girl arched against a bank of cumulus cloud and a flat highveld landscape (Ndebele Child). In contrast, CSL features a similarly aged girl waving the vierkleur flag on the day that the National Party swept to power in 1948. Of course, there are other equally eloquent images, full of human warmth and compassion. CSL visited, and photographed, the sites of Cry the Beloved Country, Alan Paton’s acclaimed story of a black clergyman caught between two worlds. Minister and his Wife, a photograph of a be-suited man and a woman walking down a dusty road, captures the discordant details which resonate with a leading theme of the novel, “the transition from a rural, traditional culture to a new urban setting” (p. 83). CSL’s forays into the countryside north of Pretoria earned her the wrath of later commentators who felt that her photography served to reinforce the ideology of apartheid. She failed to contextual her images, and shied away from commentary: what she did write “tended to be superficial, rather than searching, and trite, rather than profound” Conquering Hero, Rome, 1944, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., CGA.1998.8.68

evocative image of a soldier standing on the foot of a fallen statue. No other image expresses the pathos of war so clearly.
In defending CSL’s work against the claim that it is patronising of its subject matter, Elliott writes that “she engaged with the people and places she photographed” and that she “depicted her subjects with grace and dignity” (p. 97). Her portraits are hugely self-contained—the photographer’s ego is not evident. We are not asked to warm our hands on the flame of her talent, even when she is working under the harsh and inconvenient conditions of war.
Peter Elliott’s book, Constance: One Road to Take, is a comprehensive and detailed study of the life and photography of Constance Stuart Larrabee. It offers readers a proximate view of one of South Africa’s foremost female photographers. Readers will notice that this is a complete book, it is not ‘picture perfect’— less expressive or less interesting images have not been elided. CSL spent the better part of her life in the USA and the author records the chronology of her frequent and prestigious exhibitions.
In June 1944, CSL journeyed to Europe to cover the South African troops. Whilst in Rome she received news of the Allied invasion of occupied France. Before rushing to the Riviera, she captured Conquering Hero, an

n a packed saleroom at the Wanderers Club on Monday, November 12th, an exceptional casein landscape by J.H Pierneef and an oil painting by Moses Tladi set new records at Strauss & Co’s live Summer sale, which confirmed it as the pioneering auction house on the African continent.
The new world records for these two South African contemporaries were among the highlights of an evening that offered possibly the finest selection of works ever to appear on the South African secondary market. Included in this unprecedented offering was An Unsung History, a session featuring over 100 lots that successfully broadened the presence at auction of artists, like Tladi, who have been overlooked by the canon. Pierneef’s Lowveld Eastern Transvaal (1928), a mesmerising kaleidoscope of acutely observed colours, sold for a record R5 917 600, whilst a second example, Willow Trees, Rooiplaat, achieved a price of R2 276 000. Alongside these works, whose provenance can be traced to the Schweickerdt family in Pretoria, three early Pierneef watercolours and pencil drawings of the Lodewijk de Jager & Co Tobacconist Shop (1907) fetched R398 300, well above the high estimate. Another impressive result for Pierneef was his Cinnamon Mill, Seychelles, painted in 1954, which sold for R4 552 000.

Irma Stern’s gouache Lady of the Harem (1945), sustained her success in the market by achieving R4 096 800, a world record for this medium. Her Still Life with Watermelon, Flowers and Grapes (1933) sold for R2 048 400. Alexis Preller’s much-discussed Apple II, a latecareer intaglio with painted hollow produced in 1969, affirmed his place in the market by selling for R4 552 000. Reflecting on the success of the evening, Frank Kilbourn, Strauss & Co’s Executive Chairperson noted that “We are very proud of the offering we brought to the market on Monday night, and are especially gratified at the role that An Unsung History has now played in broadening the base of the art market. The positive response to this part of the sale by those attending our pre-sale viewings confirmed our commitment to enriching the whole art ecosystem and promoting art on every level.” A highlight of the sale was when two works by Moses Tladi – a contemporary of Pierneef’s – fetched three times their high estimate and marked a world record for an artist seldom seen on the secondary market. Farm Cottage Driefontein, J.H.B. (1939) sold for R147 940 while Mountain Landscape (Montaux-Sources) set a record at R455 200.
56
The two Tladis featured in An Unsung History, a session inspired by the landmark 1988 exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, The Neglected Tradition. “In years to come, people will look back at this sale and say this was when the tide turned, this was the moment that previously neglected artists were successfully brought into the secondary market,” commented Senior Art Specialist, Dr Alastair Meredith. He added that “Strauss & Co is always thinking of ways to best contextualise the work that we bring to market but also how to develop and promote South African artists that have been overlooked in the past. We are immensely pleased with having taken a significant step with this sale.” The Johannesburg sale revealed an increasing interest in sculpture with Job Kekana’s Head attracting furious bidding that saw the lot achieve R62 590, five times the pre-sale estimate. Another highlight in An Unsung History was Cyprian Shilakoe’s Figure with Clasped Hands fetching R250 360, well above the high estimate, while Johannes Maswanganyi’s joyous Birds in the Tree sold for R73 970 and Dr Phuthuma Seoka’s lively wooden sculpture, Page v Coetzee, fetched R73 970.

Further notable results for sculpture included Sydney Kumalo’s 1973 bronze, Horse and Rider, which sold for R853 500. In the evening session, international artist Lynn Chadwick’s bronze sculptures, Cloaked Couple VII and Sitting Couple on Base V, both made in 1977, fetched R546 240 and R512 100 respectively; while Anton van Wouw’s Bust of General Koos de la Rey (1940) sold for almost three times its estimate at R629 500.
filled to capacity. “This was probably the best selection of works to come onto the South African secondary market ever and it was a privilege to handle each one,” said Susie Goodman, Executive Director of Strauss & Co, Johannesburg.
Another international performer in session one was David Hockney’s Paper Pools which sold above the high estimate of R240 000, fetching R364 160. An impressive result of R192 460 was realised by Judith Mason’s Toxic Angel Getting an Eyeful of God, doubling its pre-sale estimate. Paul Stopforth’s God Head, diptych achieved R125 800, also doubling its presale estimates. Christo Coetzee and Breyten Breytenbach were other dominant artists, with all five of Breytenbach’s Boekdoek Lappesaid panels finding collectors and Coetzee’s mixed media Abstract Composition fetching R204 840. Strauss & Co’s final live sale of 2018 drew a diverse audience of collectors, art-lovers and new buyers during the preview weekend, with the walkabouts and a children’s programme
58
“What we were able to sell in this market was a huge achievement and we were delighted to see the presence of new buyers at both our preview events and the sale itself. This past year has seen us significantly expand Strauss Education, our programme of masterclasses, lectures, walkabouts, curated special exhibitions, and partnerships that are all aimed at developing the creative economy. The preview weekend of our November live sale certainly showed that there is a tremendous appetite for this aspect of what we do. “We were also thrilled to see the records achieved during the An Unsung History session. In addition, the strong showing by many different contemporary artists is further confirmation of our focus on this area of the secondary market, through our dedicated contemporary art auction which takes place in Cape Town in February next year.”

ASPIRE ART AUCTIONS IN BREAKTHROUGH YEAR 2018 proved a momentous year for the South African fine art auction market, and for Aspire Art Auctions, its newest entrant, in particular. The auction house hosted a total of six online auctions and four live sales, which saw the setting of many world record prices, especially in the contemporary segment. Aspire’s first sale of the year was held on 11 February 2018. The Contents of Deodar House sale comprised over 100 lots of selective fine arts, decorative items, antique and modern furniture, luxury jewellery, watches, and wine. The unique point about the sale was that the entire seller’s proceeds were donated to seed fund a new children’s leukemia charity. The sale achieved the phenomenal sell-through rate of 82%, well above the industry average. The top seller was a sumptuous still life by Irma Stern, Hydrangeas and St Joseph lilies in the artist’s hand-made ceramic jug, which sold for R4 774 560, above its high estimate. The sale of the fine art lots on the Deodar sale was dominated by an exceptional collection of large outdoor sculpture. Among these, a highly coveted piece by William Kentridge and Gerhard Marx, Fire Walker (2010) achieved a price of R3 978 800. The sale also achieved world records for well-known South African contemporary artists Angus Taylor and Willem Boshoff, whose works Sit en Staan (2008) and Clast Mar (2009), which respectively attained top prices of R2 159 920 and R682 820. The associated Deodar House online sale, comprising various house contents and collectables, had the rare distinction of being a ‘white glove’ sale, with 100% of lots sold.
Alexis Preller, Adam
63
The second sale of the year was held in Cape Town, on 25 March. Headlining its success was a rare intaglio by Alexis Preller, Gold Angel (Arêté), which sold for R4 638 400. This outstanding piece was part of Preller’s last body of work shown at the Goodman Gallery in 1975. However, the sale was perhaps most notable for its concentration of top quality contemporary art, led by a magnificent oil painting by Robert Hodgins, Night of the Awards, which fetched R2 087 280. Aspire was pleased to see a strong performance for the work Night of the Long Knives III by cutting-edge new South African star AthiPatra Ruga, indicating the growth and diversity of contemporary collecting trends. The photographic work fetched R295 568, well above its high estimate. Other contemporary artists in this category included Zander Blom, whose painting Untitled 1 96 went for R170 520, and the well-known Penny Siopis, whose Help fetched R79 576, more than double its high estimate. A challenging painting by counter-cultural artist Conrad Botes, Origin, went for R170 520, by some distance the best price ever achieved by the artist at auction. A Winter sale followed in Johannesburg, held in June. Here Aspire made impressive statements, and set several more world records. The top lot by value was Irma Stern’s Still life with magnolias, apples and bowl (1949), which sold for R6 828 000. The world records on the sale began with the sale of Peter Clarke’s work Lazy Day (1975), for R1 479 400, a mark which also obliterated his previous auction record achieved by Aspire in 2016. Aspire’s strong showing in the contemporary segment delivered world records for Zander Blom (Untitled 1.5 (2010), R386 920), Andrezj Urbanski (A0037 47/47/16 2016, R125 180), and Paul Stopforth’s Steve Biko’s Right Hand (1980), which sold for R79 660, an important record to have achieved for such a work in the context of post-apartheid South Africa. The company’s most recent sale took place in Johannesburg in October. Again, the records tumbled. The top lot by value on the sale was a superb and vibrant Alexis Preller oil, Adam, which fetched R9 104 000, a world record for the artist, beating the previous mark of R8 433 924. This world record was joined by that achieved for a drawing by William Kentridge,

of R6 600 400 for the Drawing from Stereoscope (Double page, Soho in two rooms), significantly beating the previous mark, achieved in Paris, of R5 744 788. The successful strategic focus on the contemporary segment continued in this sale. Highlights included a new world record for Cape Town painter Georgina Gratrix, whose work I Love You All the Time sold for R591 760, beating the R318 304 previously achieved for the artist by almost double, and further almost doubling its high estimate. Another record was achieved in the segment when photographer Pieter Hugo’s famous 2005 work The hyena men of Abuja sold for a South African record of R375 540, almost three times its high estimate. Mohau Modisakeng saw considerable success with his Ditaola XV, which sold for R261 740, a record, and beating the previous record of R204 624, also held by Aspire. A contemporary sculpture by David Brown, from 2011, entitled Engine Driver from his Eleven Deadly Sinners series, sold for R273 120, a new world record for this artist, bettering the previous mark, again held by Aspire.
66
In the online sphere, Aspire held five sales in the year, as well as the online auction for Deodar House. The company was the first in the country to launch a bespoke app for conducting its online sales, and became known in the course of the year as the place to be to trade in art books, after several sales in the year focused, partly or wholly, on books. Aspire themes each of its online sales, and is seeing good user uptake and sales growth for the platform. The innovative and agile auction house saw continued success for its Artist’s Resale Rights (ARR) initiative, a self-funded royalty project which sees Aspire pay royalties on a sliding scale to living South African artists whose works sell on its auctions. The project is run by Aspire to help sustain the art industry in the absence of a nationally legislated royalty scheme for visual art. To date it has paid out almost R500 000 to around 100 artists. The project was awarded official recognition in the year, earning the Best Strategic Project Award at the annual Business Arts South Africa awards.

So whether you’re a serious art collector or just have a passion for beautiful art, please pop in and visit the gallery to view their wide selection of paintings, sculpture, ceramics and glassworks. 167 Main Road Hermanus, South Africa, 7200 Tel. 028 312 2928 info@walkerbayartgallery.co.za francois@walkerbayartgallery.co.za Gallery hours (GMT+2) Monday Friday: 09h00-17h00 Saturday: 10h00-15h00 Sunday: 10h00-13h00 Walkerbay Art Gallery Resturant: Flavorz Hermanus Cliff Path Sculpture walk

We are open from Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 to 17:00. Our last entry is at 16:00. Entry Fee The entry fee contributes to sustaining the garden and includes a complimentary detailed map. R140 per person, R110 for students and pensioners Children under 18 have complimentary access when accompanied by an adultThe garden has been a project of Dylan Lewis since 2009 when he hired an excavator and moulded and shaped the landscape to form this beautiful 7-hectare sculpture garden.
79
Over 60 sculptures constituting a comprehensive record of Lewis’s full artistic development thus far have been carefully placed in harmony with the landscape: the human form, shamanic figures, monumental abstracted fragments and his iconic great cats. Along four kilometres of paths, one is led on a journey through different ‘rooms’, from the heather hills dominated by earthy male images to the meditative poplar grove with its sensual female torsos. The project began serendipitously in 2009 when Lewis hired an excavator on a whim and began shaping the contours of what would become the seven-hectare sculpture garden. Today, the artist continues to explore themes integral to his work in this serene landscape on the slopes of the Stellenbosch Mountain looking out over vineyards towards the ocean. Here, the notion of the untamed wilderness within the human psyche is expressed both in the sculptures and their positioning in the landscape. The garden focuses on indigenous species, particularly fynbos. Although planted to give year-round colour, it peaks in July and August into September, when its many buchus and ericas are in fragrant flower. A large selection of ericas, particularly unusual varieties such as Erica verticillata, extinct in the wild, was sourced from Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. The influence of the Japanese gardens and the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic is evident in the minimalist, sculptural design of this garden, its ellipses and curves, its sense of spirituality and acceptance of transience and imperfection. Every detail has been thought of and the flora in the garden was hand picked and planted to create all-year colour. What makes this garden so interesting is the 4km walkway and tour lined with over 60 sculptures. The development and influences of Lewis’ career can be seen in all these sculptures. His career began with a focus on the big cats of Africa like the cheetah and leopard, all life-size. In the more recent years he has moved towards a study of the human form ranging from monumental sculptures to smaller pieces. www.dylanlewis.co.za

lanked on all sides by mountains in the Upper Breede River Valley, Tulbagh is utterly unique in its topography and natural beauty. It was this special character that attracted the first settlers here over three hundred years ago, and the same quality which led to the selection of Tulbagh as the site for Saronsberg winery. Recognising the distinctive terroir and potential of the valley, Saronsberg has joined the mission initially led by Rijk’s Cellar to prove the region’s capacity for producing wines of outstanding quality. The cellar is a contemporary building with a beautifully finished tasting room. Earthy textures were combined with contemporary touches in this spacious area from where visitors have views into both the hi-tech fermentation cellar and the maturation cellar whilst being surrounded by Saronsberg’s contemporary art collection. Winemaker Dewaldt Heyns, who has been head winemaker since 2003, is passionate about every aspect of the winemaking process, which is unique and quite labour intensive. Handpicking, intensive sorting of the berries, a gravity-fed fermentation cellar and focus on attention to detail are key to the phenomenal success Saronsberg wines have consistently enjoyed since the maiden vintage in 2004. This consistent performance has led to Dewaldt being nominated and accepted as member of the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild in 2008. Found tranquility with Adriaan Boshoff Looking back at 2018 it is with nostalgy that we remember and focus on an artist who has influenced the South African art more that five decades ago and remains relevant ten years after his passing.
many artists both locally and international to experiment with this rich impressionist style. It evokes an inner calmness or serenity for the viewer that allows us to take a breath. His work in many respects has become more relevant with time as it sets a bench mark for impressionist works.
Adriaan Boshoff an unreservedly romantic impressionist has enriched many homes with fleeting moments of time captured forever. He has inspired

it up and start again. For art to be relevant, it must be timeless, for art to be timeless it must be universal. He was able to capture exactly these fleeting moments in his works. The viewer is always left with a story, the painting capturing the beginning and the viewer is expected to finish the story for himself. This might very well explain why works by Adriaan Boshoff has achieved new record sales at our major auction

houses and why we have experienced a heightened interest in his works. To help explain the art collectors interest in his work we could look at the universal attributes that runs like a thread through his work. His undeniable talent, relentless preparation through hundreds of sketches before he embarked on a work, his clear and expert application of colour, and his constant drive to perfection. Adriaan Boshoff would have
easily related to Claude Monet’s quote: “Colour is my day-long obsession, joy and torment.” If pressed Boshoff’s trademark as a collective would be that singular drive to express the passing moment in a variety of work, backed with firstrate ability and understanding of colour and harmony. His work has a Victorian romantic impressionist feel with subject matters that invoke an inner peace, grace and serenity.
