IT GIVES ME GREAT PLEASURE TO ROLL OUT A NEW FRESH LOOK AND FEEL IN THE ART TIMES MAGAZINE DESIGN. THIS DESIGN IS CRISPER AND CLEANER AND HAS MORE PAGES TO HIGHLIGHT THE ART WORK. When querying our printers we found that by going just 3cm smaller on a page, we could extend the pages with not too much more cost-from 64 to 100. In terms of content we have focused on gallery opening events and listings sections to make the magazine relevant throughout the month with online updates. The new magazine format also has found its niche in new social media platforms. The magazine carries the Art Guide and the beginnings of a direct market platform for art, while the extra full pages and striking double page spreads give our valued advertisers great value and exposure. We have moved much of current news to our newsletters, website and social media. I am confident that this new move will provide us with bringing the reader even more of the very best of South African Art while growing the appreciation of, and magic in South African Art. SA ARTIST ABROAD: ANGUS TAYLOR IN THE MIDDLE OF IT

Chisseling stone for ‘Thinking II’

CONTEMPORARY SA SCULPTOR ANGUS TAYLOR JUST ARRIVED BACK FROM SHOWING HIS NEW SOLO EXHIBITION AT EVERARD READ LONDON. Titled In the middle of it, the phrase marks a fissured moment on the timeline of the human condition – a passing through the storms of hardship. Each figure is part of a continuum

revealing the human condition as struggle, breakthrough and a manifestation of resilience. Difficulties shape and nurture us and our consciousness. The stone barrier becomes a passage to attaining strength; a veil to press through. In the middle of it is proof of an artist being in the moment, beyond the initial anxiety of the halfway mark, and thoroughly immersed in his work.

Candice Berman Gallery will include both familiar names as well as exciting new artists at the 2017 Turbine Art Fair. As in years before, the buzz and energy will be undeniable. This year’s exciting selection includes art by Daniel Stompie Selibe who has completed a magnificent series of panoramic abstracts softening his bold application with pastel tones and Rothko-esque fields of colour. John Vusi has busied himself with a series of collage originals incorporating fine rain or mist over the works to create a sense of dimension. Manuela Holzer has worked fervently to collate a strong selection of works incorporating materials such as ‘melted black refuse bags to steel armature and epoxy’. Look out for tall 20

metal plinths adorned by figures depicting the darker side of the human psyche. Ephia Mmbidi mixed media portraits are etched into materials using tools that mark and maim their substrate. The beautiful scars have a textural appeal and play with the light and composition. Her figures drip with paint and are plastered with collaged cardboard, charcoal and engravings to create intricate portraits revealing a beauty associated with the scars our personal histories. This Black female recently exhibited in Miami, USA. Candice Berman has developed a new range of frames that will officially be launched at TAF. Exciting new colours include ‘Phan-

tom Ship’, ‘Light Stone’ and ‘Agate Grey’. These pair beautifully with the wood framing range which includes Kiaat, Maple, Ash and Ramen. The new selection also includes a Rose Gold colour or Copper colour. The idea is to offer framing concepts that best complement the artwork therein, while incorporating distinctive design elements into your home. From the organic and natural wood

finishes, to the putty-colours in the ‘Olive Gray’ and ‘Karoo Drift’, this selection of frames will create warmth and atmosphere to best accompany your artwork. Visit the Candice Berman Gallery at Riverside Shopping Centre in Bryanston for a consultation or the gallery will gladly bring a team through to your home.

Simultaneously, the gallery promises to curate a visually tantalising booth for art-lovers, visitors and investors alike. Curated by Teresa Lizamore, who is celebrating 35 years in the industry this year, the gallery’s booth will effortlessly combine playful pieces with thought-provoking works. Artists include: Banele Khoza, Tsoku Maela, Nhlanhla Nhlapo, Lwandiso Njara, Uwe Pfaff, Zolile Phetshane, Frank van Reenen, Hannelie Taute, Robert A. Hamblin, Sakhile Cebekhulu and Jan Tshikhuthula.

Lizamore & Associates will also present a special solo project by Hannelie Coetzee. Watermense / Water people, is an installation of recycled doors - a remnant of the artist’s various activations around the flow of natural water springs throughout the city. Engraved on these found doors, are people the artist met and interacted with on hikes along the natural streams criss-crossing Johannesburg. Through her art, she urges viewers to rethink how mankind will live with limited natural resources well into the future. W W W. A R T T I M E S . C O . Z A

Eclectica Contemporary will be featuring a selection of artists from South Africa, working across Cape Town and Joburg, whose art practices demonstrate innovative and exciting approaches to notions of new African narratives within the contemporary discourse. One key aspect of the TAF is its afro-centric focus which aligns well with the objectives and ethos of Eclectica Contemporary. With an increasing focus on African Art around the world, Eclectica Contemporary aims to showcase artists who investigate the dynamics of art-making in the African and South African context, within the ever increasingly globalized art market. The art at Eclectica Contemporary pushes the

boundaries of historical representation and explores the uncharted territories of representation, technique and theory.

Heart of Warrior

Infinitely Close 2 24

The gallery’s artists to be featured at TAF include: Loyiso Mkize, whose realistic portraits spin off notions of reclaiming black identities within the hegemony of representation in portraiture; Lars Fischedick, who explores texture and materiality through an investigation of wood and paint in reaction to the delineation and limitation of art practices; Stephane Conradie, exploring eclectic identities, symbols and signifiers in her assemblage sculptures; Asanda Kupa, with his expressive mark-making that pushes ideas of abstraction around imagery in the media; and last but not least, Chris Denovan who has created mixed-media installations paint with fabric and perspex. Based in Cape Town, Eclectica Contemporary sees itself as an African gallery with an international vision. It aims to contextualize SA’s diversity and depth for a growing global market. Alongside solo shows and curated group shows, Eclectica Contemporary’s exhibition space has facilities for experimental, new media and project-based works. W W W. A R T T I M E S . C O . Z A

‘Mystery of Faith’ (Detail)

WHEN PUTTING TOGETHER THIS EXHIBITION, WHAT WAS THE STARTING POINT THOUGHT THAT DROVE FOR YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS? The ideas behind Ignis Fatuus have been incubating since the middle of last year. I was looking closely at the sublime in art, and the Sturm und Drang movement precursing the Romantics. This lead me to the fairytale by Johann von Goethe titled The Green Snake and The Beautiful Lily (1795). In this fairytale there are two travellers who are will-‘o-thewisps. I went on to research this idea of the will-o-the-wisp, as I often incorporate orb-like lights in my paintings. I later came across the poem 1551 by Emily Dickenson which uses

the image of the will-o-the-wisp as a kind of spiritual guide in a world that has lost it’s belief in God. I felt the poem correlated well with my concerns on the loss of faith in being human in these darkening times. Where do you position your art in the consciousness of Cape Town / South Africa / the world? My work touches on a darkness that is growing throughout the world. The human world feels strange, shadowy and disconcerting. Political terrains are unstable, deceptive and shifting every day. There is an air of falseness and profanity towards anything natural and good.

‘Prosaic Ritual of Youth’ (Detail)

In Cape Town I feel it daily. The landscape, full of juxtapositions and contradictions has a powerful effect on the people who live here. The beauty lures you into a false sense of security, and makes it easy to turn a blind eye to what is really happening around us. I feel that I subconciously draw from the darkness and light that surrounds me in this city. There is a definite sense of the sacred and profane, where the natural world has taken on the role of the sacred, surrounded by the profanity of human city life. In terms of your new solo exhibition, what sort of response has your work received? People have really responded well to the exhibiton. Many have loved the immersiveness of the installation and the large works, and the way we transformed the gallery space into a more intimate space. Some have said they have been brought to tears, or been profoundly moved. The power of the monochrome colour palette and the intimacy of the spaces allows people to focus and engage on a deep level.

Is it true that Zeitz MOCAA bought your entire graduate exhibition? How did this come about? Yes, Zeitz MOCAA bought Half-Light for their private collection. On the afternoon of my Grad Show opening I received a phonecall from a classmate who said a museum wanted to purchase the whole show. I had not heard of the Zeitz MOCAA at that time, and was initially nervous about all my work being bought by one institution. I spoke with the director Mark Coettzee who said he loved my work and was interested in buying my exhibition as a whole so that all the works could be kept together and shown again in a museum that was opening in the Waterfront. What’s in the pipeline for the near future? I’m about to leave for a residency in Southern Italy, and then I plan to travel for a few months on a kind of art pilgrimage.

THE CONFESSIONAL

ABSA L’ATELIER ARTISTS CONFESS SA’S ‘SEARCH ENGINE SECRETS’

Above: Franli Meintjes Right: Fleur de Bondt

10 JULY - 4 AUGUST 2017 ABSA GALLERY IF YOU TOOK A SNAPSHOT OF THE MOSTSEARCHED-FOR TOPICS ACCORDING TO GOOGLE’S STATISTICS FOR SOUTH AFRICA. WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE? THE ANSWER IS IN BROWSING THE CONFESSIONAL, A GROUP EXHIBITION CURATED BY 2014 ABSA L’ATELIER ART COMPETITION WINNER, LIBERTY BATTSON. The exhibition completed its inaugural run at the KKNK festival in April. Created for the KKNK, it was originally conceptually aligned to the festival’s theme for visual arts – ‘Greed gone mad and fear got bought’.

32

The premise of Absa’s The Confessional is built around the core idea of the Absa L’Atelier artists (previous entrants and finalists in the competition) ‘confessing’ SA’s mostsearched-for topics according to Google, and expressing these within the context of each artist’s own greed and fear. This is Battson’s first curatorial venture. Usually, the painter is known for using statistics as her subject matter (particularly figures from digital and new media channels). In preparation for this exhibition, Battson tracked and recorded Google searches for over a year. Most-searched topics included: social media, substance abuse, peer pressure, xenophobia, pollution, depression, The Bible, fear, love, South Africa, human

rights violation, poverty, abortion, friendship, water pollution, quitting smoking and immigration. Participating artists were then asked to pick a topic from this list with the proviso that the topic be true to them and their usual subject of choice. Battson added, “The artists were also required to produce an audio clip of their confession – either a truthful confession or a revelation of the chosen topic. In listening to some of the confessions, the success of these clips lies in the truth and vulnerability of each artist speaking or voicing what they represent.”

The show got personal when Kevin Irungu confessed to lying and cheating on his ‘baby mama’; Peter Mammes confessed his personal experience of abortion; and Luyanda Zindela confessed his struggle with depression and the daily pressure he faces being an artist and his family’s breadwinner. These confessions will be made available to viewers as they stand before each correlating artwork, so that they may be immerse themselves in the artist’s personal perspective.

“THE RESULT IS A BODY OF WORK REPRESENTING SOME OF THE MOST SEARCHED TOPICS AND HOW GREED OR FEAR RELATE TO THEM, AND A PLATFORM FOR THE ARTISTS TO USE THEIR VOICE TO INSPIRE AND ENLIGHTEN WITHIN THIS CONTEXT.” – CURATOR, LIBERTY BATTSON 34

TSOKU MAELA

Tsoku Maela ‘Fathers and Sons’

He began creating conceptual self-portraiture after a perplexing medical emergency in 2014 left him bedridden for a short time at the Christian Barnard Hospital. Since then, he has risen as one of the young artists to watch on the contemporary art scene; inducted into CNN’s list of African Voices and appearing on VICE’s Creators Project, appearing in numerous publications both locally and internationally. One of his films was selected for screening at the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Bokeh Fashion Film Festival.

Maela’s conceptual work deals with underlying issues ranging from the visceral, spiritual, to the geo-political; hoping to drive meaningful conversations around the topics, promoting changes in perspective. His works will be soon be exhibited at the Christopher Moller Gallery in Cape Town.

CELEBRATING VENICE

15 TO 24 OCTOBER 2017 | RYNO SWART PAINTING WORKSHOP

VENICE MAY BE THE ONLY PLACE ON EARTH WHERE TIME STANDS STILL. LIFE MOVES AT THE PACE OF A GONDOLA, OR YOUR WALK. THERE IS NO RUSH IN VENICE, NO IMPATIENCE; IT IS POINTLESS. THEN YOU HAVE THOSE FORTUNATE SOULS WHO MOVE AT AN EVEN SLOWER RATE - ARTISTS.

The Venice we experience is the same Venice that was enjoyed by Titian, with one serious exception, the masses of tourists that crowd the popular squares of San Marco and the Rialto. But there is a time when all is at peace in Venice. At dawn the squares are silent except for the sweepers and the odd police woman.

You will find them in secluded corners, standing at their easels, on fondamenti and at sidewalk cafes, drawing little birds in their sketchbooks, or staring at space while listening to the church bells, the birdsong and the blessed silence.

This is our Venice. We are accommodated in an ancient convent run by ancient nuns in the quietest part of town. Our daily inspiration is Turner, Monet, and Sargent, but the subject matter is limitless. Angels and heroes live in the clouds and in the sunsets.

“If any man can see an angel, let him paint it”, Ruskin wrote (probably in Venice). Imagination is challenged by silence, dreams charged by peace, and our task is simply to observe and to experience. ESMÉ BERMAN MADE ONLY ONE TRIP FROM HER HOME IN JOHANNESBURG IN 2016. IT WAS NOT TO VIEW THE WALTER BATTISS RETROSPECTIVE AT THE WITS ART MUSEUM, MUCH AS THE 87-YEAROLD ART HISTORIAN WANTED TO SEE THIS SHOW OF AN OLD FRIEND, BUT TO RECEIVE AN HONORARY DOCTORATE THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND. Stricken by Parkinson’s disease and confined to wheelchair, Berman was honoured for her pioneering work on South African art history, a formerly neglected intellectual discipline she had done much to lend shape and coherence. All things considered, it was belated recognition. Had circumstances been different when Berman enrolled at Wits in 1946, at age 16, this former classmate of Cecil Skotnes and Christo Coetzee could have been a university don. Berman, the only child of a settled Jewish family of English origin, enrolled in the new Wits art school with an interest in the “theoretical side of the arts,” as she put it to me during an interview at her Johannesburg home in 2007. Wits was poorly staffed, which scuppered any chance of pursuing an orthodox academic career Heather Martienssen, who headed up the school, was on extended leave in London completing her doctorate. “There was no-one who could take me for a final year theoretical study,” recalled Berman. As part of her finalyear training she made tempera paintings of early Renaissance and Flemish School works. Reference books were in short supply, particularly those with illustrations. She recalled Anton Hendricks, director of the Johannesburg Art Gallery (1937-64), lending her a book with a single “tiny little reproduction in colour”. Berman complemented her art history studies with a joint major in psychology, and after graduating in 1950 founded a private art centre where she taught for the next decade. She also W W W. concentrated interest in SA art was ambiguously met. “Is it worth it?” Nel Erasmus, a former classmate turned JAG director, responded when Berman speculated about doing a postgraduate degree on it. Martienssen decisively shot down that kite.

did part-time therapeutic work and pursued a freelance career in radio broadcasting. A radio interview while still president of the Wits Council of Cultural Societies landed her an offer to support Bill Brewer on a musical-request show aired by Mozambique’s LM Radio. Her radio career snowballed from there. Berman’s longevity in radio owed to three factors: her elocution, superb skill in narration (converting, as she put it, “a visual image into an auditory experience”), and the lack of a rival medium. Television only arrived in SA in 1976, by which time Berman’s public profile as a writer was firmly established. Berman’s earliest written criticism appeared in the magazine News/Check. “It was a rip-off of Time magazine,” summarised Berman. “For my first few reviews they edited me.” Berman didn’t like that and wrote publisher Otto Krause a stern letter – she was never edited again. When she stepped away from News/Check in 1964, painter Robert Hodgins succeeded her as critic. It is hard to imagine that Berman ever suffered from a crisis of purpose. Her writing is authoritative and clear. “I have never been obscure, I don’t write gobbledygook.” However, before the 1970 publication of Art and Artists of South Africa, a biographical dictionary and historical survey from 1875, Berman’s

Although enthusiastic about having Berman join Wits as a doctoral student, Martienssen warned her off the topic: “It was just not considered important enough and the universities would not acknowledge it,” Berman reported. So she continued with her freelance work, which included broadcasting and a lecture series on SA art for the Hillbrow Study Group, a socialist organisation purportedly linked to the SA Communist Party. Berman’s 1965-66 lecture notes for this group contributed to a draft book that landed her a publishing deal with AA Balkema (“a little man with owl-like spectacles and a giggle, hee-hee-hee,” she described him). Art and Artists of South Africa is undoubtedly Berman’s intellectual monument, one she was happy to liken to Smiths’ Sea Fishes and Robertsʼ Birds of Southern Africa. Although followed by two more titles, her debut book remains the first port of call for auctioneers in Pierneef business as much as historians in the decolonial trade. Much as Berman, a self-described progressive and liberal (“I was never a militant person”), had critical blindspots, she was also aware of the “self-righteous” posturing and “revisionist” perceptions that motivated contemporary critics. “This country is what it is because it came out of what it was,” Berman said in 2007, echoing things she would repeat to me in 2010. “You cannot deny that. Apartheid, dreadful as it was, is part of the history of this country. The artists, enlightened or not, who became significant became such because of the context in which they lived, the society in which they lived.” She was speaking about her friends, Battiss and Preller, but also, unintentionally or not, summarising her own life, which was singular, lucid and – thanks be – very long.

“ART AND ARTISTS OF SOUTH AFRICA IS UNDOUBTEDLY BERMAN’S INTELLECTUAL MONUMENT, ONE SHE WAS HAPPY TO LIKEN TO SMITHS’ SEA FISHES AND ROBERTSʼ BIRDS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA.” 58
