Zyma Amien Wins the 2016 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition “Through art, we are able to get a glimpse into the values that a society holds dear, as well as the socio-economic and political issues at play.” - Wrenelle Stander 54 year-old Zyma Amien was recently announced as the winner of the 2016 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition for her mixed media artwork, Paying Homage. As the winner of the competition, the artist walks away with a cash prize of R100 000 and the opportunity to have her first solo exhibition in 2017. As the longest running art competition in South Africa - now in its 27th year – the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition has long been a successful platform for promoting emerging artists and their work. Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Real Estate Services at Sasol, Wrenelle Stander, said this year’s competition finalists and their works live up to the reputation of what the competition has become known for – “the various ways in which emerging artists vent their innermost expressions with art that ranges from experimental to conceptual and cutting-edge.” Commenting on the importance of a competition of this nature, acclaimed artist, judge and National Sasol New Signatures Art Competition Chairman, Pieter Binsbergen stated that “Sasol has laid emphasis on the educational value of the competition as it plays a vital role in the sustainability of young and upcoming artists. To this effect, the competition piloted feedback sessions this year to try and bridge the communication gap between the regional selectors and the participating artists. This is with the hope that these feedback sessions will fuel new interest, offer clear insight and serve to inspire entrants to rise to the challenge and re-enter in 2017.”

8

“The work submitted this year was very fresh and original,” said artist and competition judge, Emma Willemse. “The standout pieces had strong concepts, craftsmanship and overall presentation which all worked hand in hand, transforming the works into something special. I am very encouraged about the future of art and artists in South Africa.”

The Winner Amien specifies that her artwork ‘pays homage’ to her mother and grandmother. It consists of three suspended overalls, offset by three appropriated sewing machines, which forcefully ‘pin’ the overalls to the floor. Reminiscent of those worn by female workers, the overalls are none-the-less constructed from gauze. With this choice of medium, the artwork alludes to the pain and exploited that the artist’s mother and grandmother suffered under the minimum wage laws, while working in the garment and textile industry.

Runner-up Runner-up for this year’s competition, Paul Andries Marais, scooped R25 000 for his digital video titled Delicates. The video references the contemporary, postapartheid South African landscape, which the artist believes is still rife with discrimination, communication challenges and inequality. Marais’s allegory employs a glove, a washing machine, a basin and socks as characters in his visual narrative, drawing attention to the delicate socio-political situation in our country.

Merit Award Winners Each winner in this category received a R10 000 cash prize. They are: • Matilda Engelblik (Pretoria) for Mapping Loss – Spaces and Dialogues • Shaun James Francis (Johannesburg) for Two weeks • Mosa Anita Kaiser (Grahamstown) for in living water • Zane Wesley Lange (Port Elizabeth) for Somatacize d • Aneesa Loonat (Port Elizabeth) for Trash All 100 shortlisted artworks are currently exhibited alongside the winning works at the Pretoria Art Museum (until 9 October). 2015 Sasol New Signatures winner, Nelmarie Du Preez, exhibits alongside with her solo exhibition Loops of Relation ….a Continuation. 21 October - 13 November: The South African Print Gallery will be exhibiting a spectacular selection of 100 years of South African Fine Art Printmaking at Moor Gallery. The SA Print Gallery focuses on the rich and diverse language of Fine Art Printmaking over the last 100 years, highlighting artists (well-known and obscure) who have contributed to the medium’s wealth of artistic and financial investment. Says Gabriel Clark-Brown, Director of SAPG: “Five years ago one could buy a Pierneef print for R8, now you won’t get one below R30. Visitors to our gallery are impressed by the quality and diversity of our selection of prints and the rising interest in art investment circles. Our thrill is finding quality prints made by lesser-known artists with an eye to produce a good print (eg. Fred Page) rather than exhibiting reproduction-type prints by famous artists, which have often been used to bulk up their portfolios. SA Printmaking has come into its own as a strong art medium, many amazing prints are to be enjoyed by all South African artists who put down their colourful lives, imaginations and desires into editioned work so that we can now enjoy them years later”. For more information see www.printgallery.co.za

30 October - 25 November: BEING HERE (and there) will be an exhibition of four major works by Andries Botha, one of South Africa’s most prominent contemporary sculptors. 4 installation pieces span the 4 decades of this artist’s career. These works have never been seen together, and one of the works has only ever been seen at Documenta in Kassel in the 90’s. Botha has been teaching and working on major commissions, so he has not exhibited in his own country for many years, until this highly anticipated solo exhibition. 22 Oct (19:00): Meet the talented artists exhibited in the Grande Provence sculpture garden in a leisurely Evening Sculpture Walk. Best known for her figurative charcoal drawings, Stander’s body of a select number of large scale portraits and group drawings, near life size drawings and reduced-size prints will take over the main gallery space. The show will also incorporate Onse Mense II, a book of Afrikaans poetry paired with Stander’s drawings (an ideal present). SA’s Best Ceramic Art on Show

During the months of October and November, Ceramics South Africa once again teams up with Corobrik and a few of Gauteng’s most prominent galleries to celebrating the medium of ceramics. These are the Corobrik National Ceramics Biennale (to be held at UJ Art Gallery), the Corobrik Collection Exhibition (at Pretoria Art Museum), and the G&W Sculpture Exhibition (at Arts Association Pretoria).

G&W Sculpture Exhibition – Arts Association Pretoria Ceramics Southern Africa has invited Gordon Froud to curate a show of ceramic sculpture from the 6th to the 23rd of November. The exhibition will cover clay creations both abstract figurative. It will not include vessels, pots or functional work; hence the focus will be solely on sculpture. There is no specified theme or approach, but a wide range of artists will be included. Some of the participating artists, include: Isa Steinberg, Lynne Morris-Hayle, Di Miller, Ann-Marie Tully, Allen Laing, Henrietta Ngako and Lydia Holmes. Alongside this exhibition, a curated display of ceramic plates will adorn the walls of the gallery. These will be made by professional ceramicists and other invited artists. For more information, contact Nandi Hilliard on +27 (0)12 346 3100 or artspta@mweb.co.za

2016 Corobrik National Ceramics Biennale - UJ Art Gallery The Corobrik National Ceramics Biennale is a juried exhibition showcasing the work of many of the leading names in ceramics. Over the years, this exhibition has become one of the most prestigious events on the local ceramics calendar. This year, it will be held from the 9th to the 25th of November at UJ Art Gallery, Auckland Park Kingsway Campus, in Johannesburg. At each Biennale, a major international ceramist is invited as the award judge, and this year, celebrated British ceramist Sasha Wardell, a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain, will perform this task. Ceramic art is fast becoming sought after by collectors. Boasting the cream of the crop in local ceramic art, this exhibition provides the perfect opportunity for viewing and acquiring top quality pieces. For more information, contact Cynthia Mc Alpine on +27 (0)74 703 4399 or ceramicssa@icon.co.za

Corobrik Collection Exhibition – Pretoria Art Museum The entire Corobrik Collection will be shown at the Pretoria Art Museum from the 23rd October 2016 through to February 2017. Ceramics Southern Africa

was established in 1972 and has, for the past 40 years, provided a platform for members to exhibit their work and to promote an awareness of ceramic discourse. All works on the Corobrik Collection Exhibition have been acquired from Ceramic Southern Africa’s exhibitions. When the collection started, the Anglo-Oriental genre dominated with works by the likes of Esias Bosch, Hyme Rabinowitz, and Tim Morris. Following-on from this genre, there are works inspired by African traditional potters. One of the prize pieces is “Noah” by the late Bonnie Ntshalintshali, the Corobrik Award winning piece for 1988. Ceramics Southern Africa continues to seek out highly-talented traditional potters, to bring their work to the attention of the art world. Explosions of colour, low fired burnished works, the exploration of the porcelain’s translucency, sculptural pieces – all are represented within the Corobrik Collection. Well-known, contemporary ceramicists whose work features, include the likes of Hylton Nel, Wilma Cruise, Hennie Meyer, Nesta Nala and Andile Dyalvani. The Corobrik Collection is a wonderful visual record of the growth and development of both Ceramics Southern Africa and of studio ceramists and traditional potters over the past 40 years. Andre Stead Sentient By Ashraf Jamal The African principle of Ubuntu – we are whom we are because of others – finds its cognate in the Western world through an ‘empathic revolution’. Against the pandemic of narcissism, a disease and a culture epitomised by the ‘Selfie’, artists such as Andre Stead are asking us to return to a more ‘sentient’, intuitive, compassionate worldview. Preoccupied with the ‘ability to feel and to assimilate people, ideas or culture’, Stead has, as a consequence, transformed sculpture into an osmotic metaphor. His figures achieve this by allowing for transparency and letting the viewer’s eye literally pass through the sculpture’s body. In this way, Stead reminds us that self-possession and self-containment is an ego-driven and rational conceit. For example, the female figure entitled ‘Sentient’ is carved from an assembled block made of ‘one hundred tapered modular parts’. By carving this assemblage, thereby breaking the form yet again, Stead reminds us that we are composites, or porous conglomerates. While Stead’s approach is technical, his mind-set is metaphysical. The sculptures are ‘designed so that when the viewer is directly in front of the artwork, at an intimate conversational distance, the negative spaces align, allowing the viewer to see through the artwork’. Stead’s reflection here is curious. His sculptures are not three dimensional Apollonian ideals but, because they are perforated and therefore as much a thing of air as of substance, evocations of a more open-ended, more fluidly inter-connective ideal. ‘The transparent nature of the artwork is a symbol of our ability to be aligned with others in such a way that we can understand their pain or joy as if it were our own’, says Stead. A view at stark odds to that typically associated with sculpture – that it is a thing to be looked at and revered at a distance – Stead reminds art that art need not be reverential, that its beauty can and must also reside in its connectivity. And in this regard, his sentiment powerfully echoes that of Martin Buber’s I and Thou. Stead’s understanding of transparency does not suppose a seamlessly aerated bond but the struggle to truly understand others. His sculptures of men and women are the avatars or mediums for this great humane idea. His most powerful work, in which the human form is wholly abstracted – a blob atop a fretwork of legs – forcefully reminds us that human understanding is not reducible to the cognitively perceptible; that the human is the embodiment of a greater idea and not merely the sum of rational transaction and a balancing act of opposed forces, but, all the more, the enigmatic sum of a far deeper synergy. It is curious that Stead should attach this belief to a form, sculpture, which notoriously has shunned such an ideal. But then, contra the rational view of humankind, it is our atomic, porous, and boundless nature which, for Stead, matters the more. For him, human connection is not only possible by reaching outward into the world, it is all the more profoundly possible by turning inward and finding a universe of possibility within ourselves. It is for this reason that I regard Stead as a sculptor of the ethical heart and mind. An immersion in online platforms revealed to the artist the astonishing ease with which human beings disclose their deepest secrets and longings. And in this regard it is worth noting, after Tom Chatfield, that ‘contrary to popular belief, “sex” is not the most searched-for term on the internet. If you ask Google about “sex”, it will offer just under two and a half billion results: enough to beat most enquiries but, charmingly, still less than a third of the more than seven billion results for “love”’. And it is love – the love of oneself and the love for others – which, equally charmingly, has inspired the sculptor Andre Stead. Andre Stead’s solo exhibition, Sublimation, will be on display at Christopher Moller Gallery in Cape Town during October and November. Refer to the Art Times Exhibition Calendar for the exact dates of this exhibition.

Introducing Giggs Kgole The Julie Miller Investment Art Institute presents its ‘Introduction Series’ On Thursday 15 September, the Julie Miller Investment Art Institute (Mall of Africa) launched their ‘Introduction Series’ exhibition program, with Giggs Kgole as its first featured artist. A monthly series of solo exhibitions featuring artists who have never before exhibited in a commercial gallery, this initiative is a first of its kind in South Africa. Whilst it gives new artists a platform from which to launch their careers, it has the added advantage of providing an affordable way for young people to start investing in art. Looking at his work, it is difficult to believe that this artist is only 19 years of age, having finished high school only last year. Julie Miller Investment Art Institute has not been alone in recognising this young man’s extraordinary talent. In supporting local artists during their refurbishments, the prestigious Mount Nelson Hotel selected a series by Kgole for permanent display. Kgole was born in Kutupu Village in Limpopo in 1997 and grew up in Tembisa. He went to primary school in Kempton Park where his father used to work at the nearby Kelvin Power Station. He then won a full scholarship to St John’s College in Houghton through the Student Sponsorship Program (SSP), and became the first in his family to pass Matric. His interest in drawing, architecture, film and design began early on. As a small child living in a

rural area, he used to run down to the river in the mornings to collect heaps of mud to mould houses and little tractors to play with once dry. The process of creating toys and games from found resources helped develop his creativity. At the age of twelve, he underwent initiation. This experience had a significant impact on his life and is explored in his artwork. This year, Kgole has had the opportunity to be mentored by William Kentridge. The young artist says that this has “allowed me to express myself creatively and has guided me through the workings of this industry”. His goal for the next two years is to make his presence known, to showcase his work and be able to support himself sufficiently through his art practice. The Julie Miller Investment Art Institute ‘Introduction Series’ is designed to work with new, ambitious artists such as Giggs Kgole and to help them reach their goals. With his drive, enthusiasm and never-ending creativity, Kgole has been the perfect candidate to launch this programme.

outoftheCUBE is an online exhibiting platform designed specifically for South African artists to share their work in the form of structured exhibitions.

Gwen Miller, Lab, 2015

A recent addition to the outoftheCUBE website has been the transcode link. This innovative page is dedicated to exhibitions that emphasise thinking and making processes, and new media works. An online platform offers an alternative solution for artists wanting to show the often more intangible aspects of their creative working methods, as well as providing a logical space for digital and video work, and for the documentation of installation and performance. One exciting project that was made possible on the site was the live-streaming of Nelmarie du Preez’s 3-week residency at Arebyte Gallery in London, UK, in June 2015 - www.arebyte.com transcode on outoftheCUBE was inspired by curator Gwen Miller’s ground-breaking exhibition TRANSCODE // dialogues around intermedia practice. This exhibition featured 12 artists whose work investigated the crossover between new and traditional media. According to Miller, “The art project, TRANSCODE, frames the conversation between digital and analogue media. Here, one medium’s characteristics may be seen to operate within another’s, such as a digital work enacting painterly motions, or a sculpture reflecting the qualities of an animation.” The build-up to Miller’s TRANSCODE allowed for the manifestation of individuality in the artists’ ways of working, and for fluid connections – both literal and metaphorical - to develop between the selected artists. They each undertook responsibility to record these different dialogues, and these documentations formed a necessary part of the physical exhibition. 22

Miller called for artists who worked both in traditional and new media, but whose creative processes were more and more influenced by digital technology, and consequently had come to include the reconstructing of ‘grey areas’ and the overcoming of rigid classification. This exhibition, held at the UNISA Art Gallery in 2011, formed the most significant practical phase of Miller’s practice-led research Doctoral process. Moving forward from that point, and in keeping with the pivotal TRANSCODE concept of traditional structures morphing into the new, Miller and outoftheCUBE director Mandy Conidaris negotiated that appropriate aspects of the physical exhibition be encompassed by the virtual realm, which resulted in transcode on outoftheCUBE. In an ongoing collaboration, these two curators will revisit the creative output of those original TRANSCODE artists who are available to participate on the transcode on outoftheCUBE page, as well as introduce the work of other artists who have an experimental and exploratory approach to artmaking. To date, the transcode page features the work of Colleen Alborough, Janet Botes, Nelmarie du Preez, Frikkie Eksteen, Sello Mahlangu, and Emma Willemse, as well as Millers’ own artwork. Miller’s father-in-law was a scientist, and during her research period, she inherited his laboratory equipment. This triggered her path forward into investigating methods of experimentation, and as a visual arts lecturer, she sensed that scientific exploration mirrored creative processes. One of her early artworks around

this theme was Wanderer (2010, fig 1). This has clear references to the Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich’s seminal work Wanderer above a Sea of Fog of 1818. Like the Romantics of that era, Miller had a fascination with the philosophy of the sublime, and this digital print represented a threshold of new discovery for her. The subsequently executed process work (2011, fig 2), along with her contemplation of various sentiments around the notion of family, led to the sculptural work Key to the family (figs 3 and 4), where she ‘showcased’ locks of her twin sons’ hair, collected over the years. Between 2011 and the present day, Miller has explored various mixed media techniques, from freestanding assemblages to acrylic painting on digital prints. Visually, she uses the laboratory space and equipment as subject matter, which symbolise creative catalysts and incubators. Lab, Studio Mindmap, thinkbox and Sketchbook (figs 5 to 8) are examples of this. These works are featured in Miller’s outoftheCUBE solo exhibition on the transcode page. But as importantly, in a spirit of mutual respect and co-operation, and as former colleagues, Miller and Conidaris have offered each other the opportunity to extend the first physically tangible TRANSCODE blueprint into an ongoing virtual project that will be stimulating, unpredictable - and constantly accessible online. www.outofthecube.co.za SA ART TIMES | OCTOBER 2016

Art Absolutely Absolut Art, a reseller of South African masters and contemporary art has opened their doors at 19 Ryneveld Street, First Floor Gallery, Stellenbosch. They are celebrating their opening with an exhibition of South African masters art, including the likes of Maggie Laubser, JH Pierneef, Gerard Sekoto, Erik Laubscher, Pieter Wenning, Hugo Naude, Cecil Skotnes and many others. Gerrit Dyman (Snr), started Absolut Art in 2001 after spending 15 years as an art trader and consultant. Now another 15 years later the gallery has established itself as a trustworthy and reputable brand. The elder of the two Dymans has handed the business to his namesake and son, who continues to take the business forward with the same level of service and excellence. As an established gallery with 30 years of experience between the two Dymans, they are excited to open their doors in one of South Africa’s oldest towns, says Gerrit Dyman (Jnr). Absolut Art invites the public to visit them at their new premises, they are open weekdays from 9am - 5pm and Saturdays from 9am 1pm. The gallery can also be reached on 021 882 9296, or contact Gerrit Dyman (Jnr) directly on 072 699 5918. Visit www.absolutart. com for a range of the gallery’s latest art and news.

Aviva Maree’s Rural Romance Inspired by a visit to the desolated village of Skipskop, Aviva Maree’s recent body of work captures the heart of the rural Cape. Still lifes, street scenes, farmscapes and views from the docks are romanticized in pastel hues and subtle contrasts. In many of the artist’s pieces, blue-collar working women are the subject to which the eye is drawn. Domestic goddesses in voluptuous form, their features are softened by sensitive brushstrokes and a caring hand. “Simplicity is an art”. This is the philosophy by which the artist lives and paints; and indeed Aviva Maree’s paintings invite the viewer to relax in carefully composed simplicity, to focus on the singularity of a simple, beautiful moment and to allow their sunset pigments to quieten one’s soul. A solo exhibition of Aviva Maree’s recent work, Pigment will be on display at Stellenbosch Art Gallery (34 Ryneveld Street) until mid-October. If you are able to join us for the occasion, Michèle Meyer will provide a special address at the opening, which is to be held at 7pm, on 29th September. For more information about this international-exhibiting artist and her newest exhibition, please visit the Stellenbosch Art Gallery website at www.stellenboschartgallery.com 28

I am Portchie

A fter 25 years, he is arguably the most successful contemporary artist in South Africa.

Exploring new subjects are testimony to the creative talents of this true master of his craft. His art does not know any language and is not restricted to space... in conversation with this prolific painter What made you decide to take your art abroad?

Where did Portchie begin?

I was born Jan Hendrik Viljoen and got my Portchie- name from school, but it’s more than that, I am a person of different varieties. In essence, I am just a small boy from a small town, Tweeling in the Free State, where I grew up with good values and good creativity. I grew up with parents who were creative with what they did in their lives. They taught me to look out, not just for myself, but for the people around me.

My treasured South-African audience is widespread and because my work is more than brush strokes and colour, consisting of joyful themes in simplicity, the international market is the obvious next step. My love for travelling made me not only a globetrotter but a witness to the exhilarating reality that my chosen themes are internationally sought after and celebrated.

People are important to you. How do you include them in your busy life?

Tell us about your first international exhibition in London

I have introduced myself on British soil with my novice solo exhibition called Joy in London from 1 – 14 September 2016 at the La Galleria Pall Mall. The exhibition was a resounding success. My international clients came from all over. The showcase evening was attended by at least 350 people. The success was evident throughout the exhibition and most of my work was sold. I was overjoyed with the foundation laid to build on in coming years.

My whole being is made up of beautiful people around me who make me smile and I return the smile with my unique art. It offers them more than just a picture. It shows and gives more – my paintings becomes a life experience where the audience feels a connection and an ambience of joy.

If you could describe your talent in one word, what would it be?

Creativity is my blueprint: To create work, to create interesting things and be creative in a lot of different ways. Not just one single aspect; not just painting, not just sculptures, not just cloth or jewellery. My whole fibre is made up of design. Sculptures are 3D images of figures portrayed in my paintings. The simple scenes of girls and boys playing are embroidered onto linen cushions, not only bringing joy but also create participation from savvy artisans from all over the world.

Where to next? Your paintings are bright, playful and colorful. Why?

I see joy in most things, I sees joy that can be derived from colour. By using colour, old images of my youth can be captured in a fresh way. An artist’s use of colour and the balancing thereof brings these images to life. My paintings are telling stories of joyful things around us, things becoming part of my life fibre … children hop-scotching, people riding bicycles, people reading.

My next exhibition titled: “Sunshine on a paintbrush” will be in Johannesburg at Alice Art Gallery in Ruimsig on 29 October 2016 from 10:00 – 16:00. A full collection of my bronzes will be on display and I will showcase some of my latest creations of applied art like a fantastic range of new individually made handbags with my designs on.

Portchie makes beautiful things happen.

What is a successful artist?

“The most important thing to an artist is to be unique and to do something only you can do in your way. If you can get that right then there’s something beautiful happening within yourself and also the people around you. I am Portchie” www.portchie.com

Pierneef prints a solid investment ? You must be joking ! .... right ?

At the SA Print Gallery we see things differently, we use less hype and acquire wisely. We draw what we understand as the best SA produced fine art prints from the past 100 years. We dont have a great deal of Kentridge’s or what most commercial galleries consider “sure things” but rather quietly go on to gather what we’re good at : acquiring the best and most interesting of SA Fine Art Printmaking language developed over the past 100 years. Rather spread your investments by buying 5 Pierneefs @ 50K each than a non starter R 250K Painting chances are, you’ll be more impressed by Pierneefs Print returns in five years time...

New arts district to boost Johannesburg’s cultural credentials By Cristina Ruiz A new arts district, the Keyes Art Mile, is taking shape in Johannesburg. Last month, businessman Anton Taljaard unveiled the first completed building in his redevelopment of a two-block area of Rosebank, a leafy residential neighbourhood in the centre of the city, which is already home to contemporary art galleries such as Everard Read and CIRCA. The Trumpet building has been turned into a mixed-use space with restaurants, high-end design shops, a private members’ club and a first-floor bar with views over the city. It also houses Johannesburg outposts for the Cape Town contemporary art galleries SMAC and Whatiftheworld; the latter is sharing its space with the design gallery Southern Guild. The building’s soaring entrance hall will host exhibitions, site-specific commissions and other projects. The organisers want to use the hall to create a platform for artists and curators: “We’re extremely open to ideas,” says Taljaard. He plans to tap into a network of art world frie nds that he’s made through collecting Modern and contemporary South African art. “If there is a curator who has a really great idea, they should approach us.” Taljaard plans more art spaces as he develops the Keyes Avenue area with a R1bn investment from his property development company. “We want to infuse the entire neighbourhood with art and design,” he says. Across the street from the Trumpet building, a lot that now sits empty will eventually house apartments and a contemporary art gallery. Construction should start in two to three years and Taljaard hopes to complete the gallery in four or five. Taljaard says that one idea is to use the space as a Johannesburg outpost for the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MoCAA), which is currently under construction in Cape Town and due to open in September 2017. Zeitz MoCAA “will need to have a presence in Johannesburg, so in time maybe we can deliver that”, says Taljaard, who is a Zeitz MoCAA trustee. Taljaard has spent the past few years working with Johannesburg Council on the precinct plan for Rosebank. “This development will create a backbone for the area so that when other people step in and develop their own projects they will have to respect the precinct plan guidelines.” These guidelines envision vibrant, tree-lined streets with plenty of retail, dining and art spaces. One person who has bought into this vision is Marelize van Zyl, the associate director of SMAC gallery. “It is clear that the Trumpet is aimed towards ‘destination shopping’, with a carefully selected group of restaurants, cafés, design retail spaces and galleries in the development. Here, the gallery will operate at the centre of an art buying market in Johannesburg.” Van Zyl says there is “a tangible air of enthusiasm about the city – now considered one of the art cities of the future (according to the art publisher Phaidon) – and we want to be part of it”. In a country with scant state funding for contemporary art, Taljaard believes that hybrid developments such as this one will enable art and artists to flourish. “I don’t believe in handouts for the arts,” he says. “I believe in creating an engine to make them sustainable. If I were to disappear and this development were to get taken over by someone else, maybe the next guy will have no personal interest in art but he will realise it draws people in and so it makes good financial sense to keep it.”

As South Africa’s market gains momentum, investor mixes galleries, restaurants and destination shopping in his Keyes Art Mile development

Unique Eloff Sculpture Among Price Leaders at Joburg Auction STEPHAN WELZ & CO. | JOHANNESBURG

Fanie Eloff, Sitting Woman, signed and cast with foundry mark of C Valsuani bronze De Kamper, G.C, De Klerk, C. Sculptured: The Complete Works of Fanie Eloff, University of Pretoria, 2011, illustrated on p 95, no. 77. Estimate: R160 000 - R240 000, Sold for R266 000.

16

A one-of-a-kind Fanie Eloff sculpture that had seemed to have gone missing, a mid-Victorian silver tea service by the renowned Barnard brothers and an unusually large Chinese famille rose vase were among works that fetched prices well beyond their estimates at the Stephan Welz & Co. Fine Art & Collectables Auction in Johannesburg on August 30. Eloff’s Sitting Woman, inspired by the Rhine maiden of Wagner’s opera, Der Ring des Nibelungen, emerged from a South African private collection to fetch R266 000 against its estimated price of between R160 000 and R240 000. Only one bronze was cast of this artwork, and a good deal of mystery surrounded its whereabouts until it was finally placed on auction after he recently passed away. “The person who bought it has secured a real treasure,” says Luke Crossley of Stephan Welz and Co. Also in the Fine Art Session of the auction, the work of Jacob Hendrik Pierneef continued to command premium prices. His oil on board A View Through The Trees with an estimated price of between R500 000 and R600 000 was sold for R666 000. Two Pierneef linocuts were particularly sought after. With an estimated price of R10 000 to R15 000, Ysterkop fetched R47 500 and Jackdoring was sold for R38 000 against an estimate of between R8 000 and R12 000.

A mid-Victorian silver tea service attracted widespread interest. It was manufactured in 1854 by Edward Barnard and John Barnard whose business had its origins in about 1680. The brothers are renowned for the quality of their work, a fine example of which is their Lily font which was commissioned by Queen Victoria for the christening of her first child, Victoria, Princess Royal, in 1840. With an estimated price of between R16 000 and R18 000, the tea set on auction at Stephan Welz & Co far exceeded expectations by selling for R63 700. A standout item in the Decorative Arts Session of the auction was a late 19th century Chinese famille rose vase. Unusually large for an Oriental work, the 90cm tall vase has a globular body with elongated neck and is painted with alternating panels depicting figures at various pursuits, including maidens amid clouds, warriors, musicians, ducks swimming in ponds and flower-filled baskets among scrolls and dense foliage. With an estimated price of between R15 000 and R17 000, the vase fetched a staggering R115 900. At the other end of the scale, an unassuming Chinese blue and white plate painted with a dragon chasing a flaming pearl attracted strong bidding because of its quality. It went on auction with an estimated price of R2 000 and R4 000 and sold for R37 000.

Strauss & Co’s Summer Blockbuster Auction STRAUSS & CO | JOHANNESBURG

Alexis Preller, Space Angel Estimate: R4 000 000 – 6 000 000

Strauss & Co’s much anticipated summer auction takes place at the Wanderers Club, Johannesburg, on Monday 7 November 2016, and includes what is undoubtedly the most important group of paintings by Alexis Preller to appear on the market in recent years. Preller’s stunning work titled Space Angel (estimate R4 000 000 – 6 000 000), built up in the artist’s unique high-relief gesso technique, and showing a disembodied aquiline head with sensuous lips, will go under the hammer for the first time since the artist’s estate was sold in March 1978. It will be joined by other pivotal works from Preller’s oeuvre including the early and luxuriously painted Breying the Riems (estimate R900 000 – 1 200 000), the Seychellois Archaic Sandals (estimate R200 000 – 300 000), the jewel-like Ritual Bull (estimate R80 000 – 120 000), the surreal Moon Suite (estimate R150 000 – 200 000), the symbolically-charged David (estimate R250 000 – 350 000) and the Tower of Babel executed in 1975 (estimate R500 000 – 700 000). The pièce de résistance titled Adam a long-lost work from the late 1960s, will be seen for the first time since leaving the country shortly after it was executed. This masterpiece by Preller has been repatriated from New York and will undoubtedly cause a sensation (estimate R6 500 000 - 9 000 000). 14

Prior to the auction, Professor Karel Nel, leading Preller expert and co-author of the respected monograph on the artist, will present a lecture on the importance of this group of works titled The Lost Prellers, at Strauss & Co’s Johannesburg offices on Monday 17 October 2016. On the back of the well-received Walter Battiss: I Invented Myself exhibition at the Wits Art Museum, three major paintings by this much-loved artist are also on offer. Two large scale panels showing the style-shifting influence of South African rock art on Battiss’s work have been repatriated from Australia. The instantly recognizable Limpopo (estimate R900 000 – 1 200 000) is sure to attract considerable interest from collectors. Extra wall power is provided by Cecil Skotnes’s monumental quadriptych Figure Panels (estimate R2 000 000 – 3 000 000). Its beautifully incised and painted surface ranks as one of the artist’s most significant works. Sculptures from Skotnes’s fellow Amadlozi Group artists, Lucas Sithole and Ezrom Legae, also highlight the sale. An outstanding work by Robert Hodgins, the country’s colour-supremo, will attract keen interest. Titled Howling at the Age of Dawn (estimate R700 000 – 900 000) it gives evidence both subtle and direct to Francis Bacon’s influence on the artist.

Sought after drawings by leading South African artists William Kentridge and Penny Siopis will no doubt attract competitive bidding, particularly as both artists are to be represented in the upcoming South Africa: The Art of a Nation exhibition at The British Museum in London. Strong works by Dorothy Kay, Andrew Verster and Norman Catherine will also be on view, as will landmark sculptures by Jane Alexander and Deborah Bell. Top contemporary artists are also brought to the fore with major examples from Deborah Poynton, Willem Boshoff, Walter Oltmann, Joni Brenner, Pieter Hugo, Gerard Marx and Georgina Gratrix making Strauss & Co’s summer auction unmissable. BUSINESS ART AUCTION HOUSE NEWS

A Negative That’s Actually a Positive CITADEL By George Herman, Head of South African Portfolios at Citadel Global economic growth continued to soften as the first half of 2016 came to a close, leading to global central banks continuing with their extremely accommodative monetary policies. Following the surprise Brexit vote to leave the European Union by Britain, additional stimulus was deemed necessary and with even more cash being produced at the economic centre, interest rates declined to historic lows. As much as a third of global bonds now trade at negative interest rates. In such a world, real commodities become very valuable as investors turn to them as a store of value as opposed to financial assets denominated in depreciating currencies. Gold is already up more than 25% in US dollar terms during 2016, underlining this theme of real assets being preferred over paper assets. This demand for real assets is bound to benefit high-quality art as well, albeit with some time lag. Unfortunately only the top-end, trusted names will benefit from this search-for-safety.

Volume, value and other numbers Our panel of auction houses had 17 auctions in total during the first half of 2016, down slightly from the 18 auctions held during the same period of 2015. In all 2,340 (2015: 2,500) lots were sold at a total value of R118.9 million (2015: R132.3 million). Volumes/Number of lots sold declined by 14% against first half 2015 and total turnover value declined by a massive 21%. The average price per piece of R50,800 (2015: R53,300) also declined by 4.8% during the first half of 2016. This metric has held up best among all the data series, providing a general sense of well-being for the overall South African art market. The maximum price paid during the first half of 2016 was, once again, for an Irma Stern, this time for CAPI100 Half-year -0.1% 2016

“Portrait of Freda Feldman in Basuto Hat”. The R4.5 million hammer price was drastically lower than the R14 million best price of 2015. The nextbest prices of R4.3 million and R3 million were also drastically lower than during the previous half-year period.

CAPI update The CAPI100 was down 0.1% during the first six months of 2016. It is interesting to note that the smaller the universe and the closer to the “top” CAPI50 and CAPI20 showed stronger results than the wider CAPI100. During tough times, investors tend to go with what they know, the “old faithful” as it were, and hence the better performance of the top-selling artists. For as long as the oil medium is under pressure, the overall index will also remain under pressure. The oil sub-index is still 14% below the peak it reached during the first quarter of 2015.

Negative interest rates see move to real assets The global art market has been under pressure this year due to several factors, but the Chinese slowdown of luxury spending has been one of the biggest reasons. A clampdown on corruption and gifting has sent shock waves through the entire luxury industry and the art market certainly hasn’t been spared. Fortunately gold is attracting a great deal of real investor interest due to negative interest rates in many global bond markets. The graph below shows that gold is now the top-performing US dollar-based asset among those shown here, since the year 2000. Quality art will benefit as works by Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol and Dave Koontz become assets deemed as good-asgold in storing value through difficult times. This is a unique example of where one’s negative is another’s positive.

Aspire’s First Auction Set to Soar ASPIRE ART AUCTIONS | JOHANNESBURG

New art auction house, Aspire, launches its first auction on 31 October 2016 at The Park on 7 in Hyde Park, a stunning new white-cube venue, in which superior works of art will be superbly displayed to best effect. With a dream team of knowledgeable art experts aware of the phenomenal global growth of the art market, Aspire Art Auctions is proud to develop the local art industry through its sole focus on great quality work, superbly photographed and presented in an image-centric catalogue design featuring articles commissioned from a range of acknowledged art writers. Aspire’s auctions embrace a wider range of historical, modern and contemporary art from stellar, high value items rarely seen on the market to eminently collectable works by younger artists who, in the expert opinion of its specialists, are worth collecting. Top paintings by Irma Stern, produced during the period widely regarded as the highpoint of her career, include the 1946 oil, Malay Girl, and two superb gouaches painted on consecutive visits to the Congo in 1942 and 1946. Alexis Preller’s painting, Profile Figures (Mirrored Image) of 1968, is so highly regarded that it was selected by the artist and Dr Albert Werth, the thendirector of the newly built Pretoria Art Museum, to be prominently displayed on Preller’s acclaimed retrospective of 1972. Its installation at the front entrance, to be seen directly on entering the exhibition, is keenly remembered by art historian and artist, Karel Nel, whose authoritative catalogue text provides unique insights into this rare work. Important works by artists who developed particular visions of the South African landscape include JH Pierneef’s Karoo near Hofmeyer, Hugo Naudé early Drying Fruit (1896) and his later spectacular eruption of colour captured in Springtime, Namaqualand. By contrast, interesting comparisons can be drawn between Maggie Laubser’s Portrait of a Woman with a Head Scarf and Gerard Sekoto’s Group Talking in terms of the artists’ astute observations of people. A wonderfully provocative erotic painting by Walter Battiss, which radically subverts the history of the nude as well as representations of race and gender, is guaranteed to cause a stir in the auction room. Robert Hodgins is represented by a range of brilliant works from his epic The Weather in the Streets, through Totems in a Desert and Studies of Buddies to HUSBAND vs WIFE. Erik Laubscher’s striking Still life with jug and apples was produced in the interregnum between his studies under Maurice van Essche and his move to Paris in 1950 to further his tuition at the Académie Montmartre where the Cubist painter Fernand Léger proved to be a major influence. In later painting trips through areas like the Kouebokkeveld, he and Stanley Pinker produced some of their most impressive paintings, examples of which feature prominently on this auction. 10

Edoardo Villa’s pioneering use of steel in combination with found objects resulted in a unique vision that forged European art traditions with African forms. Homage to Maillol, a definitive work from 1965, celebrates the fullness of the female form so central to the French modernist sculptor’s oeuvre. Four beautifully carved jelutong sculptures by the late Peter Schütz are fine representative examples from different parts of his oeuvre. Wim Botha’s conceptually succinct and acutely distilled sculptures take their inspiration from a vast range of classical and contemporary sources. Two early Cake paintings by Penny Siopis, amongst her most sought-after works, are sure to attract avid attention. As the artist writes, “oil paint’s associations with the body (forming skins, changing over time, ageing...) are stressed by the work’s ‘feminine’ morphology, an element that was to become a critical concern of the Cake paintings.” Diane Victor’s sensitive works produced with fugitive media evoke the fragility of existence. Impressive photographs by award-winners, David Goldblatt and Pieter Hugo, explore, respectively, questions of what constitutes a place in the South African landscape and the economically marginalised of Nigeria. Young artists are well represented with extraordinary works in a range of media by Zander Blom, Athi-Patra Ruga, Ed Young and Dan Halter. Michael MacGarry’s sculpture incorporating a film prop from District 9, with all the talismanic power of an African icon and a contemporary cultural fetish, is sure to be a winner. SA BUSINESS ART | OCTOBER 2016

The Man Behind Manzart & the Holden Manz Collection “Work is more fun, than fun is fun” – Migo Manz Visit Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands, and you will be hard-pressed not to come across the Holden Manz Collection space, which is situated right in the centre of town, on the main street. An immaculately curated juxtaposition of high-calibre, South African, contemporary art awaits you – and will stay with you long after you leave. Migo Manz, owner and curator of this little jewel of an art experience, lives with his partner and two small children out on their wine farm, the Holden Manz Wine Estate, in the original old Oliphantshoek corner of the village. His life is spent finding and nurturing the best of South African visual art talent, having ample time with his children, and not forgetting the creative and hands-on input on the farm. Holden Manz Wine Estate produces a prestigious range of award winning wines, and includes a 5-star manor house country hotel, a spa, a winery, orchard and an outstanding vineyard restaurant. In his own words, “Family, farm and fine art keeps me happily busy and sleeping well at night”. Migo spent his pre-African life in the European creative hubs of London and Paris - working and breathing architecture, design and art after studying all those subjects in Stuttgart, Germany and at the reputed Architectural Association in London. His move to Cape Town in 2005 resulted in the immediate acquisition and opening of his first fine art gallery on Loop Street, which consequently moved to Franschhoek five years later. Thanks to his European experience, Migo was able to introduce the work of renowned French artist and photographer, as well as Picasso’s close friend and 6

collaborator, Andre Villers (1930 - 2016) into Africa; for the first and only time during the artist’s life. An instant success, Villers’ works were quickly snapped up by both Capetonian and international art collectors at the vernissage. Several successful shows of international artists followed over the next first years, by which time Migo had been in the South African art industry long enough to discover and sign up an array of local talents to finally move his focus completely onto the local thriving art scene. One of these talents who was not yet discovered at the time, is the now well-renowned and loved, collage artist Karin Miller. Let’s call it destiny rather than chance that Migo contacted her after seeing Karin’s immaculately beautiful, yet socially challenging works, on the cover of a magazine. The rest, as they say, is now South African art history. Migo’s main outlook on life is to create a positive impact on whatever occupies him – or as he likes to say, “Work is more fun, than fun is fun”. All of his exclusively signed artists are shown in his gallery at any time. This direct input and energy shows, as Migo and his team rehang the works on nearly a daily basis. He is adamant that his role is the one of a curator. Ownership is not so important to him. The joy and the drive surely can be felt among his team. Compliments and visitor-enjoyment is held in higher regard than a sale - although sales do seem to happen in good measure. So, what about the artists? Migo’s team allows the artists to be completely enwrapped in their creative process, as the team covers everything else after

an artwork leaves the artists’ studio. The gallery is small and yet the collector base stretches from local Franschhoek and Cape Town buyers to an evergrowing international fan base. All five continents are easily covered, with big collections acquiring exquisite contemporary, African art through the Holden Manz Collection. Migo sees himself as the ‘father’ to his ‘offspring’ artists – the parent who nurtures, guides, and protects – creating the caring and safe space in which free creativity can develop. This is in fact similar to the motto which Migo and his partner chose for their own family: “Be humble, be happy, become who you are”. And who are they, these artists? Well, besides Karin Miller, who is preparing her sixth solo exhibition with Migo at the moment, there is another digital collage artist. Caitlin Truman-Baker joined the stable only two years ago, but is already making big waves with her South African playing card series. Donna McKellar impresses with her large scale Karoo landscapes and calm, meditative paintings of old, abandoned buildings. Wildlife artist, David Filer convinces with out-of-this-world pencil drawings (“No, it is not a photo” – is a daily comment by Migo’s team). Lisette Forsyth enthrals with Capetonian street scenes, applied on an array of found objects; and don’t forget Luhanri Bekker, whose intense, large-scale portraiture awakens emotions in people so strong that they often walk into the gallery to Background: Karin Miller, Venus With Ship (detail). Foreground: Migo Manz with his 2 year-old daughter Hiro, and 5 year-old son Rothko.

SA BUSINESS ART | OCTOBER 2016

“Do your own thing, believe in it, work hard, keep at it and be open for changes to be implemented. This is not ignorance, but an attitude that the only competition one should have, is with oneself.” – Migo Manz browse and walk out with unexpected addition to their collection. Marie Stander, whom Migo met through a collector friend a decade ago, is now preparing her fifth solo exhibition with the collection to be opened during the Franschhoek Art Festival this October. Hers are the finest of charcoal drawings, portraying her beloved Jamestown community, for which the artist is world-renowned. So, the long and short of it is that Migo’s innate ability to find the true essence of South African, contemporary art has made him a true ambassador in the SA art industry; and his influence has built The Holden Manz Collection into the pinnacle of art excellence. Go, see, enjoy, collect. We hear that you are working on a new project to promote contemporary artists, called Manzart. Please tell us more about it. How did the idea come about? MM: The Holden Manz Collection has been a contributor to the South African art scene for over a decade now – and obviously everyone with half a creative mind is always on the search to refine, develop and move the work they are doing onwards. We have been working for several years on the Manzart concept and are now ready to launch it toward the end of 2016 – a ‘three click’ sales website for South African contemporary art. We opted for a very local presentation in Franschhoek, which is intentional because of a certain sense of place and our sense of connection with this place.

However, many of our collectors stay in direct contact with us and the trust relationship we have established over the years allows us to search and find the right art pieces for our collectors, even if they live in Johannesburg, Berlin, South Korea, you name it. To facilitate an evermore streamlined process, we decided to begin Manzart.com This is the natural extension and growth of the Holden Manz Collection and our aim to present, nurture, direct and ultimately provide art pieces by a growing stable of artists. The focus has stayed the same but the platform has grown. There are numerous competitions, galleries and websites promoting young talent. How is Manzart different? MM: Manzart is Manzart. It promotes fine, South African, contemporary art to the world. I take it as a principal to never look left or right to see what others are doing. Do your own thing, believe in it, work hard, keep at it and be open for changes to be implemented. This is not ignorance, but an attitude that the only competition one should have, is with oneself. The world has become so accessible and at the same time so daunting – hence a strong focus on your own projects allows to stay sane, to keep going. It is this meditative outlook and drive, which got the Holden Manz Collection to where it is today.
