I would like to express my sincere thanks for all the positive feedback from our readers regarding the new format. The smaller format both travels quicker and easier, like good communication devices that fit comfortably in jacket, pockets and handbags. The new format allows us to have more than 100 pages per month and gives us great pleasure to be able to include more art in the magazine. ArtHome is a new section to the Art Times Magazine. This will allow galleries, artists and collectors to sell and promote their work and stock. Art Times readers will in turn be able to buy art from the comfort of their own homes. This month’s features include the wonderful Joburg Art Fair and the colourful and beautiful Sanlam Portrait Award that are world class and reflect the best of us as a diverse and culturally wealthy nation. Once again thank you for your ongoing and growing support. Best, Gabriel

LIVE AUCTION, THE VINEYARD HOTEL, CAPE TOWN 16 OCTOBER 2017 / www.Straussart.co.za
Alexis Preller, Homage to Hieronymus Bosch, signed and dated ‘48, oil on canvas, 40 by 50cm, R3 000 000 – 5 000 000
Strauss & Co’s third live auction of 2017, scheduled to take place at the Vineyard Hotel on 16 October, is a tour de force for collectors looking to expand the depth of their collections with work by important South African artists. After the R20 million record sale in June of JH Pierneef’s ‘Farm Jonkershoek with Twin Peaks Beyond, Stellenbosch’, those looking to bolster their portfolio with work by the
artist will not be short on choice. A highlight is a small study in casein dated 1924, again of Jonkershoek, (estimate R500 000 – R700 000), while those desiring a more restrained work can look to his rendering of ‘Elim’ executed in 1950, (estimate R700 000 – R900 000). Collectors seeking a major work that typifies Pierneef’s oeuvre, should find ‘Hardekoolboom in a Bushveld Landscape’, more than fits the bill (estimates R2 000 000 – R3 000 000).

William Kentridge, Drawing for ‘Johannesburg Second Greatest City After Paris’, signed and dated 89 charcoal and pastel on paper, 109 by 166,5cm, R2 000 000 – 3 000 000
Daylin Paul Broken Land 10
Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, Jonkershoek Stellenbosch, signed and dated 26, inscribed with the artist’s name, title and provenance on the reverse casein, 26 by 35,5cm, R500 000 – 700 000
Maggie Laubser, The Old Shepherd, signed with the artist’s initials, oil on canvas, 55 by 49,5cm, R2 800 000 – 3 400 000
Another artist who features prominently on the sale is Maggie Laubser with a range of works from different periods of her life. An early study dated 1924, titled ‘Still Life with Pink Flowers in a Glass Vase’, (estimate R300 000 – R400 000) shows the early development of the painterly style for which she became so prominently regarded. Her ‘Black and White Cat seated Amongst Flowers’ (estimate R800 000 – R1 200 000) reveals Laubser’s mastery of composition as well as her endearing portraits of animals that were a recurring theme throughout her life. A highlight of the sale is her portrait, ‘The Old Shepherd’, (estimate R2 800 000 – R3 400 000), demonstrating Laubser’s mastery of the medium of oil paint as well as a deep seated empathy with her subjects. Works by Irma Stern include three on paper, and a rare and mysterious oil, ‘Black Lilies’, executed in 1941, (estimate R2 000 000 – R3 000 000). A surrealistic composition dated 1948, ‘Ode to Hieronymus Bosch’’,
by Alexis Preller, (estimate R3 000 000 – R5 000 000), and consigned in the USA, will appear on the market for the first time. Altogether, there are six Prellers on this auction. William Kentridge leads the contemporary lots with two important drawings from his early animated films coming up, namely his figure of Felix Teitelbaum languishing in a blue pool from ‘Johannesburg Second Greatest City After Paris’, (R2 000 000 R3 000 0000, and the couple in a landscape from ‘Sobriety, Obesity, and Growing Old’, (estimate R2 800 000 – R3 400 000). Sculpture highlights include Esther Mahlangu’s, ‘African Venus’, Clive van den Burgs’s ‘Of Giotto and Egypt’, (both estimate R30 000 - R50 0000, and Wim Botha’s ‘Untitled (Ecstasy Series III)’ which is sure to attract competitive bidding (estimate R250 000 – R350 000).

South Africa. Loder also established the African Arts Trust which provides support for black artists from the country. Antoniolli released a statement saying “It is impossible to mention all the people that have been touched by Robert’s work and spirit. In relation to Triangle, however, Karen Wilkin, NY based curator and critic, recently reminded us that “The Triangle Artists Workshop, founded in 1982 by Tony [Caro] and Robert, in Pine Plains, New York, was the beginning of it all… We’re very proud of that and we think Robert and Tony were, too – proud that what was supposed to be a one-time only summer project has both continued to exist and to grow and evolve. The original Triangle of the UK, Canada, and the US has become the amazing international cat’s cradle of today’s Triangle Network”.”
Alessio Antoniolli, director of Gasworks and the Triangle Network, has announced the passing of Robert Beauclerk Loder. Prolific patron of the contemporary African Art scene, Loder co-founded the Triangle Network alongside artist, Sir Anthony Caro. The pair met in 1980 when Caro was in the process of organising an exhibition of abstract British art in townships across South Africa. Two years later, they launched the Triangle Network and held the first Triangle workshop for 32 sculptors from across the United States. Today the Traingle Network is an international consortium of small-scale arts organisations and projects that support the work of emerging artists through workshops, residencies, exhibitions and outreach events. Between 1957 and 1966, Loder was employed by Anglo American Corporation and based in both Johannesburg and Lusaka. During his time in Johannesburg, he assisted in running Union Artists – a black theatre group who performed for mixed audiences in apartheid

“Today the Traingle Network is an international consortium of small-scale arts organisations and projects that support the work of emerging artists through workshops, residencies, exhibitions and outreach events.” He also said that “Robert’s dynamic and indefatigable commitment to artists and the belief that they should lead the development of their own work often led him to identify as ‘the postman’ for a Network that, over the last 35 years, has supported over 4500 artists’ development through workshops, residencies and other process-led activities in more than 41 countries around the world.” Loder leaves behind a loving family, and an extraordinary community of the arts.

Paint it forward. In South Africa only one in 100 young people entering schooling finishes tertiary education. You can change this by supporting the Visual Arts, while helping to create tomorrow’s artists‌ Absa has committed to creating more opportunities for young people to access quality education, including access to funding for studying. One of the ways we are doing this is in partnership with well-known, established artists who have donated key artworks for auction. These artists are painting it forward, with all proceeds from the sale of the artworks going towards Visual Arts scholarships.

As the oldest art fair in Africa, the annual FNB JoburgArtFair will return to Johannesburg’s Sandton Convention Centre for its tenth edition, from 8 – 10 September 2017. The Fair will feature over 60 exhibitions within 5 categories, including Contemporary and Modern Art, Solo Presentations, Limited Editions and Art Platforms. The selected galleries and organisations hail from 11 countries across Africa, Europe and the United States. Notably, six participants have exhibited in every FNB JoburgArtFair edition since 2008 – David Krut Projects, Goodman Gallery, Everard Read, Gallery MOMO and SMAC Gallery. The Contemporary section will welcome MOV’ART (Luanda), exhibiting for the first time at the Fair, while Addis Fine Art (Addis Ababa) and Circle Art Agency (Nairobi) joining the main Contemporary section after their Fair debut last year as part of the 2016 East Africa Focus. Other new exhibitors include 50ty/50ty (Joburg) in Limited Editions, NWU Gallery (Potchefstroom) and Under Ground Contemporary (Kampala) in Art Platforms. The solo presentations are dominated by women this year – six of the eight artists are female. South African artists include Sethembile Msezane – represented by Gallery MOMO (Joburg & Cape Town), Lady Skollie by

Tyburn Gallery (London), Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi by the Mariane Ibrahim Gallery (Seattle) and Bronwyn Katz by blank projects (Cape Town). In Toto Gallery will showcase Ilana Seati, and SMAC Gallery will present a new body of Chemu Ng’ok’s work. SMITH Studios will exhibit a unique presentation of the collective HOICK and ELA - Espaço Luanda Arte will present António Ole. “In preparing for the tenth anniversary edition,” says Mandla Sibeko, Director of the FNB JoburgArtFair, “we asked ourselves if we ever simply reflect on a scenario without imagining the potential outcomes, or envision a future without considering the past? So we used this natural moment of reflection and celebration as a framework for the focus of this year’s Fair – to interrogate how closely the acts of ‘Looking Back & Looking Forward’ are tied. We’ll be looking back at the legacy of Modern and Contemporary African Art while looking forward to the future possibilities of artistic practices, communities and markets on the continent.” In the spirit of ‘Looking Back’, Dr. Zoe Whitley of London’s Tate Modern, will curate an
18
exhibition within the Fair entitled ‘Truth, or some other abstraction’, which will look at how South African modern artists voiced their stories and how those stories shaped our contemporary understanding of history. Borrowing works not often on public display from Gauteng’s collections, Whitley’s curatorial investigation of the modern South African narrative will demonstrate the importance that our past plays on present realities. The Fair welcomes back Robin Rhode – the featured artist at the very first Fair in 2008 and once again as 2017’s featured artist. Rhode’s most recent body of work resonates with the concept of ‘Looking Forward’. He obscures obvious age, race or even gender from his imagery, favouring instead the constants of geometry, balance and color theory. The results are eerily comforting avatars in the age of globalization – iconography with which anyone may identify. Mari Van Niekerk, Senior Communication and Sponsorship Manager at FNB says, “The FNB JoburgArtFair continues to play a significant role in discovering the value that artists bring

to society and has earned a reputation as the ideal place for those interested in African contemporary art. As a proudly South African bank with roots that extend into several other countries on the African continent and further afield, First National Bank (FNB) helps to sustain the support of art through this prestigious annual event.” New to the FNB Joburg Art Fair, Cartier will be front and centre supporting the arts, showcasing exceptional jewellery and watch creations, and
a selection of artworks created but the students of Johannesburg-based art schools, The Artists Proof Studio and The Market Photo Workshop. The exhibition, part of the Maison’s support of emerging artists in South Africa, is titled “The Ordinary Becomes Precious”, and is inspired by Cartier’s Juste un Clou collection. Juste un Clou pieces magnify the precious qualities of everyday objects in a sublime take on the ordinary, embodying boldness, modernity, and innovation by offering a creative twist on a familiar object.

“This is our inaugural year as sponsors to the FNB Joburg Art Fair,” said Cartier Country Manager, Sheila Anne Johnston. “Cartier has always had strong ties to the world of art. In fact, the art of jewellery-making is one of the most ancient and universal forms of expression. We were driven to support the Art Fair as art and design are part of our identity. The creative spirit of Cartier resonates with that of the Art Fair.” Also exhibiting at the Fair for the first time, BMW will present a BMW 7 Series by Ndbele artist Esther Mahlangu. Twenty-six years ago, Mahlangu was the first woman to create artwork on a BMW 525i Sedan, and in 2016 she was once again commissioned to refine a BMW 7 Series, which was exhibited at the Frieze London art fair. As always, the FNB JoburgArtFair has planned a vibrant and informative series of special projects and events. Lalela will host the Educational Programme and Artinsure will host the Art Tours. Says Gordon Massie, MD of Artinsure, “We are excited to be involved in the walkabout program for the second year because it’s our goal to make art accessible. Professor Federico Freschi and Magkati Molebatsi will lead the walkabouts, giving art lovers an insight into some of the works on display.” This year, the addition of a Film Programme will be headlined by the Centre For the Less Good Idea, the brainchild of acclaimed South African artist William Kentridge. On Friday 8 September, audiences can enjoy a specially curated selections of video works from The Centre Of The Less Good Idea’s first season, which will be projected on a large outdoor screen in Nelson Mandela Square.
The Talks Programme will once again take place at the Theatre on Nelson Mandela Square and highlight the exciting content at this year’s Fair. Notably, the programme includes featured artist Robin Rhode and The Armory Show (New York) Director Benjamin Genocchio – each delivering a keynote – as well as a conversation that looks at The School of Anxiety, a project by Moses Serubiri, showcased at the 10th Berlin Biennale. “We would like to thank First National Bank for their vision and continued support”, concludes Mandla Sibeko. “Thanks also goes to our galleries, especially those who have been with us since our inception, and we welcome our new galleries and projects to this bumper edition. Further thanks is extended to our government partner, Gauteng Provincial Government, to Cartier, not only for their exquisite exhibitions, but their enthusiasm and recognition of the value that art brings to society. We are very grateful to Egon Zehnder for enabling our VIP programme, as well as Artinsure for hosting the walkabouts. We look forward to continued relationships with these prestigious organisations.” The FNB JoburgArtFair takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre, Exhibition Hall 1, 161 Maude Street, Sandton Dates: 8 – 10 September 2017 Opening times: Friday, 8 September: 11am – 8pm Saturday, 9 September: 11am – 7pm Sunday, 10 September: 11am – 5pm Cost: Tickets are R150 and can be purchased through tixsa.co.za.

PRESTIGIOUS ANNUAL FNB ART PRIZE AWARDED TO PEJU ALATISE Nigerian artist, Peju Alatise, has been announced as the 2017 recipient of the highly coveted FNB Art Prize at the media launch of the 10th instalment of the FNB JoburgArtFair. Alatise joins the ranks of previous winners such as Nolan Oswald Dennis, Turiya Magadlela, Portia Zvavahera and Kudzanai Chiurai. She receives a cash prize as well as the opportunity to create a new project that will be showcased in a dedicated exhibition space at the FNB JoburgArtFair this September. Alatise – who holds a degree in architecture – is a mixed-medium artist, poet and published
writer whose interdisciplinary work has garnered attention on the global art stage. She was selected as the 2016 fellow at the Smithsonian Institute of African Art and exhibited at the Venice Biennale’s 57th edition. With several international solo exhibitions to her name, Alatise’s work can be found in private and institutional collections around the world. She’s passionate about addressing social, political and gender-related issues as her primary subject matter, through artistic work that also captures the joys and pain of womanhood in modern-life-African traditions. Mari Van Niekerk, Senior Communication and Sponsorship Manager at FNB says that the FNB Art Prize honours exceptional artistic talent and, at the same time, provides many local and international opportunities beyond the Fair, often resulting in a springboard that catapults the artist’s career to a higher level.

“There is a great need to continue investing in artists that tell us more about ourselves, and art in this sense, is a commodity that isn’t simply a good financial investment, but a social dialogue that enables us to reflect. Our decade of continued support of the FNB JoburgArtFair is recognition of the varied roles that art plays in our society, from being a form of expression which offers a much deeper and intrinsic look at the world around us, to an alternative investment option,” says Van Niekerk. “Our commitment to the FNB JoburgArtFair continues to ensure that in the years to come, we will continue to introduce African artists to an international audience, galleries, collectors, writers, thinkers and art lovers,” she says. All galleries participating in the FNB JoburgArtFair are given the opportunity to nominate one of their artists for consideration by the jury. This year, Red Door Gallery – one of the leading galleries based in Lagos – nominated Peju Alatise for the prize. Red Door’s founder, Bola Asiru says, “Peju’s work is filled with strong societal narratives on the realities of life in Africa; her message has been heard in West Africa, at the Smithsonian in the United States and the Venice Biennale in
Europe. We feel that it’s time for this message to be taken to the rest of Africa and there is no better platform for this than the FNB JoburgArtFair.” The 2017 judging panel for the coveted FNB Art Prize consisted of Nicole Siegenthaler, Producer of FNB JoburgArtFair, Pulane Kingston, partner at Webber Wentzel Attorneys and active patron of the arts and RosaLee Goldberg, New York University professor and Founding Director of Performa, a non-profit arts organisation committed to the research, development and presentation of performance by visual artists from around the world. “The quality of each of the shortlisted candidates’ proposals this year was high,” says Pulane Kingston, “but we were ultimately unanimous in our decision around Alatise’s proposal – it stood out. The innovative, universal social relevance and poignancy in the themes underpinning her work were some of the deciding factors in tipping the scales in her favour. The overall body of her work over the years is varied and compositionally strong, palpably reflecting the intense vibrancy of the African continent. We have no doubt that the integrity of the overall body of her work will propel her career meaningfully.”

The Artists exhibiting with Salon Ninety One have all excelled in their respective fields, with their names quickly gaining recognition across South Africa and Internationally.

BARNARD GALLERY FNB JOBURGARTFAIR Barnard Gallery is proud to present a solo presentation of new work by Alex Emsley, in a continuation of the gallery’s tradition of presenting experience-driven concept booths at FNB Joburg Art Fair. Alex Emsley’s practice is informed and inspired by the technical nature and physical act of painting, by its processes, tools and methods. As such, Emsley often evokes the image of the “craftsman” in reference to his practice, as opposed to the “artist”. While this term perhaps falls short of capturing the outstanding eloquence and nuance of Emsley’s photorealistic imagery, it does capture an unashamed commitment to and underscoring of the craft of image making and the technical rigour of the practice of painting. While Emsley emphasizes craft over concept – setting the artist’s work apart from much of contemporary art practice – he nevertheless operates within and gives contemporary interpretation to the long standing art historical tradition of the still life, and its concomitant reflections on notions of vanity, mortality and the life of the object.
“Alex Emsley’s practice is informed and inspired by the technical nature and physical act of painting, by its processes, tools and methods.”

THE NWU GALLERY
DEVELOPING ITS AUDIENCE THROUGH EDUCATIONAL ART PROGRAMMES, WITH SUPPORT FROM THE MTN FOUNDATION
The NWU Gallery and MTN Foundation will launch a custom designed educational application at FNB JoburgArtFair 2017. It consists of selected works from both the NWU Art Collection and MTN Art Collection, to be used as templates on which kids can base their own drawings. This connects to the developmental work of the NWU Gallery and MTN Foundation, and speaks to the lack of arts education and exposure of our youth. The app will be freely available online and as a download. The application, of which full details will be unveiled at the Fair, follows the awarded MTN Art Safari for Kids, which took place during Aardklop 2016 – to be repeated this year.
The Art Safari for Kids saw school children from the Potchefstroom community taken on chaperoned tours through 12 exhibitions including work by well over 200 artists. A custom designed multilingual educational programme, encouraging thought, comment and artistic creation, was received with critical acclaim. This year the programme is in a digital format so to broaden its reach through improved accessibility by schools and institutions across the country. Together with the MTN Foundation, the NWU Gallery hopes to extend this project’s implementation and development to rural and underdeveloped areas in the North West province and beyond.

Select works from both institutions’ art collections will also be on show during the Fair. The selection is a condensed form of the Figuratively Speaking exhibition, which showed during September and October of 2016. This exhibition explored the range of complex meanings associated with figure in the analysis of visual and material forms. Works of Bettie Cilliers-Barnard, George Pemba, Irma Stern, Cecil Skotnes, Minnette Vári, Justin Dingwall and Maureen Quin (amongst others) will be on show at the Fair. The original selection included works by 48 heavy weight and upcoming artists. An exhibition catalogue was published, and will be on sale at the Fair. About the work and exhibitions of the NWU Gallery The NWU Gallery has been using the arts, in all its forms, as a vehicle for discussion, transformation, development and most importantly, education. It frequently hosts and presents exhibitions, projects, talks and events on societal issues regarding race,
gender, sexual orientation, language, identity and institutional culture. It is the vision of the NWU Gallery to make art accessible to a broader audience by means of interactive processes. The NWU Gallery aims to establish such interaction through the study, preservation, conservation, exhibition, interpretation and development of its collection, as well as the preparation and presentation of temporary exhibitions through a programme of educational activities aimed at diverse audiences ranging from novice to expert. About the NWU Gallery & NWU Art Collection The NWU Gallery consists of two gallery spaces. One large exhibition space with climate controlled storage facilities, as well a smaller Botanical Garden Gallery and sculpture park. It has seen over a hundred exhibitions since its launch, from esteemed local and international artists alike.

SANLAM PORTRAIT AWARD 2017 RUST-EN-VREDE GALLERY / MICHAELIS GALLERY UCT www.michaelis.uct.ac.za / www.rust-en-vrede.com
Kate Arthur, Kwena
Janine Anderson, First Day of School
The third Sanlam Portrait Award culminates with the highly anticipated TOP 40 exhibition – to be held at Rusten-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville, and PORTRAIT 100 at Michaelis Galleries (UCT) respectively on the 25th and 26th of August.
In engaging with a huge number of high quality works created by numerous talented artists the three judges, Peter Monkman (British based portrait artist and teacher, 2009 Winner and 2015 Judge of the BP Portrait Award, and current director of Art at Charterhouse), Nkule Mabaso (Visual artist and highly respected curator of Michaelis Galleries) and Carl Jeppe (Visual artist and esteemed lecturer for 35 years at the Tshwane University of Technology) went the extra mile in curating the final eclectic mix of 40 contemporary portraits.
This year, the national competition attracted 1,437 entries throughout South Africa. Due to the anonymous judging process, flexible age restrictions (18 +), and free use of the Stuttaford Van Lines Courier Service, all participants were deemed equal; levelling the playing field and ensuring that the judges select their Top 100 portraits purely based on technicality, narrative and emotional appeal.

Traditional portraiture exists not only to portray a physical likeness of the sitter, but naturally conveys a sense of who the sitter is – capturing an essence of the subject’s identity. It is within this identity-narrative that Kate Arthur’s portrait Genna & Felix intrigued the judges and claimed this year’s Sanlam Portrait Award first prize. Arthur, an artist currently residing and working in Cape Town, obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rhodes University in 2007 and works predominantly in mediums of painting, drawing and printmaking. She is interested in portraiture, identity and representations of the body; predominantly creating work that challenges normative narratives around gender and sexuality.
Genna and Felix, like most of Arthur’s preferred subjects, identify as LGBTQ – a complex identity, filled with an array of mixed narratives, thoughts and emotions. Given the current political notions on this seemingly volatile topic, Arthur’s winning portrait forces the viewer to engage with her subjects, whilst simultaneously raising the importance of LGBTQ visibility. Arthur succeeded in creating a work worthy of the “Sanlam Portrait Award crown”. Genna & Felix is a fresh, contemporary and controversial take on the traditional views on portraiture. It can be seen at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery from 25 August to 27 October during gallery hours. www.rust-en-vrede.com 021 976 4691 / rustenvrede@telkomsa.net

ASPIRE ART AUCTIONS LINES UP EXCITING NEW SALE
Abromovic Golden Mask
Aspire Art Auctions’ successful Winter sale in Johannesburg in July was marked by an international auction record of R1,200,320 achieved for a drawing by exiled South African artist Dumile Feni, the extraordinary Children under Apartheid, as well as the successful sale of top international lot Golden Mask by renowned performance artist Marina Abramović, proving this auction house’s increasingly global reach. Aspire also introduced its first online auction, Timed Online, that was led by Ruarc Peffers and Jacqui Carney, who pioneered online fine art auctions in South Africa. Over 200 lots featured on this sale, powered by the global Invaluable platform. The next live auction takes place in Johannesburg in November 2017. Focusing on a carefully selected combination of historic, modern and contemporary work, the sale features some significant highlights. The announcement recently of the consignment of a powerful work by JH Pierneef, The Commando Tree, on the road to Sibasa (1930), is now followed by the confirmation that Aspire will present a rare early drawing by William Kentridge from Mine, the third in the celebrated film series, 9 Drawings for Projection. The fourth film of the series won the artist his first major recognition and the prestigious Rembrandt Gold Medal at the Cape Town
44
Triennial held at the South African National Gallery in 1991. Drawing from Mine depicts Johannesburg mining magnate, Soho Eckstein, in bed, about to plunge his cafetiere, which transforms into a mine shaft or periscope plunging into the world below. One of the drawings from this film is in the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institute, in Washington DC. This superb image from the internationally renowned films will be offered on auction at estimates of R1 500 000 - R2 500 000. The sale will also present a singular work by celebrated contemporary artist Mohau Modisakeng, who was recently one of the two featured artists at the much-praised SA Pavilion at the latest Venice Biennale. Ga Etsho 1 (2015) is a unique, one-off inkjet print, and a highly unusual piece by this young contemporary talent. Commenting on the forthcoming auction, Aspire director Ruarc Peffers focuses on the quality of the contemporary work on offer: “Our last live sale was proof positive that there is an appetite in the local market for good contemporary work, with great prices being fetched for the likes of work by Kendell Geers and Guy Tillim. The Timed Online auction continued that trend, with a wideranging focus on the contemporary arena. While our upcoming live sale has a wealth of highly collectible work in the modern and historic idioms, this really fine Kentridge drawing stands out as one of the finest ever to come to auction.”

MARGARET NEL
ARTIST MARGARET NEL EXHIBITS OVER FOUR DECADES OF WORK IN MAJOR RETROSPECTIVE PRETORIA, South Africa – A major retrospective exhibition by South African artist Margaret Nel will be shown at the Pretoria Art Museum from 15 October 2017 until 28 January 2018, featuring a selection of over 70 paintings, spanning a career of over four decades. The exhibition will be opened by renowned art historian, consultant and curator Warren Siebrits, at 11h00 for 11h30 on Sunday 15 October 2017. The exhibition has been designed as a narrative across five inter-related themes, loosely corresponding to different chronological periods of Nel’s output, dated between 1970 and 2017. The themes demonstrate progression in technique, subject matter and influences within Nel’s career, while simultaneously tracing common conceptual motifs running through her entire body of work. Nel’s early professional output was primarily shaped by two sources of influence, both of which were current at the time of her student training — Francis Bacon’s figurative response to post-war existentialism, and the emergence in the 1960s of Nouvelle Figuration as a reaction to American Pop Art, abstraction and Nouveau Réalisme. These early works, completed between 1970 and 1976, are characterised by the use of the abstracted figure as a means to suggest the effects of societal isolation, emotional withdrawal and mental debilitation. These silent, nameless players are forever caught at the margins of relevance, in a no-man’s land
of their own — and others’ — construction. In certain works, such as Two cups (1974) and Mrs A (1974), there is the inference of a social invitation, the terms of which are unclear or perhaps even threatening. With the 1970 New Signatures Prize for painting being awarded for Tea time I, and again in 1973 for Mr S, it became evident that figurative work would remain a primary vehicle for Nel to express themes of psychological distress and isolation. Having won critical acclaim with selected early work, Nel’s output lapsed for nearly a decade — a hiatus that only ended in 1988 after viewing the work of Penny Siopis and Keith Dietrich at the Cape Town Triennial of that year. A period of great productivity followed, shaped by Postmodern tendencies towards compositional complexity, eclecticism and socio-politically charged commentary, with much of Nel’s work addressing marginalised feminist and environmental identities. In works such as Regina of the famished land (1992), To you shall be given (1992) and Waiting for the Renaissance (1998), the barren landscape acts as the common stage upon which a recurring cast of players make bids at self-preservation: a makeshift shelter, a crudely demarcated claim to privacy, a futile attempt at escape. While these works can be read as a response to issues of displacement and power pertinent to the time, including South Africa’s uncertain democratic transition, the Burundian and Rwandan genocides of 1993 and 1994, and the first wave of global warming awareness, they bear equal relevance to current global concerns around statelessness and immigration.

Stain.
Post-2000, Nel turned to the use of crockery as a still-life motif stereotypically associated with domesticity and feminine identity. While Nel’s early and Postmodern work frequently features the tea cup as a recurring symbolic device, these later renditions present these vessels as fractured, fragmented, overturned — suggestive of some earlier violence, either physically or psychologically inflicted. In Spill (2009) and Stain (2009), the spillage and subsequent stains resulting from this disturbance seem to imply a loss of control or perhaps, even that of blood. This inference is especially relevant in light of the national
48
increase in, and normalisation of violent crime, especially that of sexual assault, since South Africa’s political transition in 1994. Returning once more to figurative subject matter in the mid-2000s, Nel specifically focused on skin laid bare to the elements, as a metaphor for psycho-emotional or physical vulnerability. Exposed skin, and the trauma inflicted upon it by the effects of the sun or the cold, alludes to a lack of preparedness for existing, or perhaps forthcoming, adverse conditions. These inadequate attempts at self-preservation possibly point to a

premature transition from an Arcadian age of innocence to a state of worldliness and disenchantment — whether sexual, political or emotional. In Exposed: Willem, 28 (2006), Nel presents a charged figurative study, the subject’s sunburnt skin echoing a sense of anxiety and unease. Nel’s latest body of work is distinguished by three investigations of the same theme: cuts of meat, baked goods and fresh produce, all rendered on an oversized, visceral scale. Either encased (and therefore preserved) or breached (and thereby vulnerable to decay), these works represent a conflict between an
outer and inner reality that immediately forces the subject matter out of the mould of “still life”. In works such as Bleed I (2014) and Slab II (2015), her explorations of meat call to mind the carcasses of Rembrandt and Bacon; only here, blunt-force brutality is sanitised and commodified with plastic and polystyrene — alluding, perhaps, to the mythologisation of flesh and ritual apportioning of spoils. Her representations of processed confectionary, heavy with glazing and piped cream, such as Two buns I (2014) and Custard buns 6s (2015),

inherently call to mind female sexual organs, either preserved from, or poised for, the processes of decay. This tension between the cleanliness and corruption of flesh is also demonstrated in Nel’s explorations of fresh produce, which too succumb to softening and eventual decomposition. Nel’s work is housed in numerous public, private and corporate collections, including the Universities of Stellenbosch, Free State and Pretoria, and the collections of SASOL, Telkom, ABSA and Rand Merchant Bank.

SCULPTURE MEETS URBAN PRECINCT SCULPTX, AN EXCITING NEW SCULPTURE PROGRAMME SEPTEMBER 2017 / www. melrosegallery.net
William Sweetlove
Melrose Arch has partnered with The Melrose Gallery to launch SculptX, an exciting new sculpture programme, in September 2017. SculptX consists of The SculptX Park and The SculptX Fair. The SculptX Park is an urban sculpture park that will see large sculptural works by some of South Africa’s foremost sculptors gracing public areas throughout the precinct on a permanent basis. The first of these sculptures will be officially unveiled on the 6th of September 2017 and others will roll out at different times of the year. The SculptX Park aims to add to the beauty of the precinct whilst providing a valuable platform for sculptors to showcase their works and added value for those who work, live and play in Melrose Arch. “We expect that The SculptX Park will become a popular destination for art lovers and tourists alike” explains Craig Mark, Director, The Melrose Gallery. The SculptX Fair will run for the month of September every year and will consist 68
of various sculpture related activations and exhibitions in different venues throughout the Melrose Arch precinct. The inaugural SculptX Fair launches with ‘SculptX’ a large group exhibition at The Melrose Gallery that features works by more than 30 of South Africa’s most established and emerging sculptors and a few invited artists from other countries. The exhibition opens to the public on 07 September and runs until 08 October. Participating artists include the likes of Willie Bester, Pat Mautloa, Noria Mabasa, Wilma Cruise, Anton Smit, Carl Roberts, Pitika Ntuli, Gordon Froud, Ndabuko Ntuli, Arlene Wandera (Kenya), Collen Maswanganyi, Paul du Toit, Thabo Pitso, George Halloway, Andre Stead, Stanislaw Trzebinski, Rodney Place, Thulani Zondo, William Sweetlove (Belgium), Samuel Allerton, Ella Cronje, Trevor Potter, Martyn Schickerling, Alexander von Kritzinger, Jaco Kruger, Monica van den Berg and Heidi Hadaway amongst others.

OPENING EXHIBITIONS / WEEK 1 SEPTEMBER
Editor Ashraf Jamal opens the book by calling for Paul’s oeuvre to be reassessed by the art world. Tim Leibbrandt explores Paul’s love of punk music in ‘A Punk Odyssey’. Anna Stielau analyses Paul’s search for Utopia and Sarah McCarthy reflects on Paul’s love of sculpture and specifically his public piece ‘Into Tomorrow’. Archivist Claire McNulty highlights some intriguing aspects of Paul’s creative legacy. The book is richly and generously illustrated with many of Paul’s standout works and examples of the diverse mediums in which he worked.
‘WILLIE BESTER’:
The Melrose Gallery is proud to be hosting Willie Bester’s solo ‘Social Engineering’ which runs from 2 November to 2 December 2018. This captivating exhibition will showcase a large collection of important new and old artworks created by one of South Africa’s foremost artists and is sure to be one of the highlights of the 2017 art calendar.
‘REMEMBERING PAUL DU TOIT’ One of the highlights of the SculptX Fair 2017 will be an exhibition of more than 30 artworks by Paul du Toit that will form part of the group exhibition and the Johannesburg release of his book which will take place in The Melrose Gallery. Ashraf Jamal, the editor, and Lorette du Toit, Paul’s widow, will attend the opening. This captivating book includes contributions from 5 writers who were given full access to the archive established after Paul’s death. They drew inspiration from the many notebooks, scribblings, thoughts and diaries left behind to explore the various influences on Paul’s creative output.
The Melrose Gallery intends to continue to expand on our efforts to provide a valuable platform for African sculptors in Johannesburg. The Willie Bester solo provides a fitting end to our 2017 program, following on from Stanislaw Trzebinski’s well received solo Ortus and the launch of SculptX in September. We welcome approaches from sculptors who are keen to present concepts for the myriad of spaces that exist within the Melrose Arch precinct for the Urban Sculpture Park and SculptX 2018. For more details on SculptX please contact craig@themelrosegallery.com or visit www. themelrosegallery.com or www.facebook. com/themelrosegallery.

STATE OF THE ART GALLERY STATEOFTHEART RELOCATES www.stateoftheart-gallery.com
StateoftheART has distinguished itself through its hybrid approach; exhibiting works both online and offline through a physical gallery, the purpose of which is to offer buyers the opportunity to view the quality of available artwork and give them peace of mind when investing online. “We encourage art lovers to research and follow an artist online through our website before deciding on that perfect piece. We also provide a certificate of authenticity with each newly purchased work.”
After four years at 61 Shortmarket Street, StateoftheART Gallery has relocated to 50 Buitenkant Street in Cape Town’s trendy Fringe district of the city centre. “It’s not in the central or ‘downtown’ precinct of the city but we’re in close proximity to The Book Lounge, The District 6 Museum, and The Fugard Theatre amongst other noteable establishments. There are exciting developments underway in this part of the city; it’s still easy to reach on foot, and is on the First Thursdays map - so the new space ticked all the right boxes” said director Jennifer Reynolds. “Whilst we had tremendous success in Shortmarket Street and built a following of wonderful collectors - many of them international clients - our customer base has grown significantly since 2013 and we now require a larger venue that is more conducive to art appreciation, and which allows us more flexibility in our mission to be South Africa’s leading e-commerce gallery.”

StateoftheART affords visitors to the site the opportunity to discover and buy affordable fine art that would not otherwise be readily found. Having a large range of artists available at your fingertips makes uncovering new artists easier. By being able to browse through an artist’s collection of available and sold work online you can get a sense of their entire body of work as opposed to only being able to see one or two examples in a physical art gallery. The gallery offers a diverse selection of thoughtfully curated original art and limited edition prints by South African artists which can be searched using filters by size, medium, style, subject, artist and price; and the site gives the buyer the opportunity to read about each artist and
browse themed collections aimed at assisting in the journey of discovery. StateoftheART will officially reopen on the 7th of September with ‘UNTITLED:SPRING’ - a group exhibition of painting, photography and drawing by Chris Denovan, Jeannie Kinsler, Miranda Crooks, Lezanne Kotze, Pascale Chandler, Grace Kotze, Lisette Forsyth, Kendall-Leigh Nash and Janet Botes. “Spring and ‘springtime’ refer not only to the season, but to ideas of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection and regrowth. UNTITLED:SPRING marks the ‘rebirth’ of our gallery at 50 Buitenkant Street, in the East City precinct of the Cape Town CBD” Jennifer Reynolds.

JP MEYER / WRONG ARCHIVE
OPENING : WEDNESDAY, 20 SEPTEMBER 2017 17H00-20H30 / ALEX HAMILTON STUDIO GALLERY
www.alexhamilton.co.za
Growing up, art was something I only read about in encyclopedias. My first personal encounter with this creative medium was when I walked into the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam during a backpacking trip through Europe aged nineteen. Captivated by this journey of exploration, I decided to join SAA as a flight attendant and so embarked on a 15-year career that would see me travel to and visit museums and galleries on many continents.
Photo, Vanessa Cowling
At the time I didn’t understand contemporary art and was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of art history, but the process piqued my interest in making art. In 1996, at the age of 36, I resigned from my job at SAA and enrolled as full-time art student at the Foundation School of Art in Cape Town, receiving my Diploma in Fine Art at the end of 1999. With the emergence of video art and computer graphics in the 80s/90s, painting was declared dead. What captivated me more than any other subject, however, was the craft of painting. Fuelled by an emerging midlife crisis, I sold my possessions after graduation and spent a year travelling around Asia. On my return to South Africa I settled in the Karoo, where my work gradually changed from representation to abstraction. During the period 2000 to 2013 my paintings were predominantly large fields of pattern in monochrome colours. My first visit to the Venice Biennale in 2013 was dazzling and served as a very significant watershed, and the months that followed revealed an increasing need to return to figurative painting. In 2014 I exhibited a series of small figurative works at the Breytenbach Gallery in Wellington and in 2016 I was invited to participate in the Woordfees Visual Art programme, mounting a solo exhibition entitled DOOP/INITIATE.

Last year I mentioned to artist and curator Alex Hamilton that I was working on larger canvasses and that although I was struggling, I was excited about the process. Being familiar with my work, he offered to host an exhibition at his Studio + Gallery, a robust industrial space in Woodstock. The exhibition, titled WRONG ARCHIVE, will include a number of oil paintings on canvas.

It may sound like a clichĂŠ but many aspects of the creative process remain a mystery. While most contemporary art disciplines require thorough research and conceptualization, painting for me works in a different way: the practice of applying paint and constructing an image is in itself a kind of research, often enabling one to work with abstruse ideas and concepts which can lead to new insights. Therein lies the magic of painting for me.

What direction is your work currently heading in? For me the exciting thing about making art is that I never know what to expect next, but I am dreaming of getting a bigger studio and making larger works. What currently inspires your work? The more I work, the more inspired I am. The recent Philip Guston exhibition at the Accademia in Venice is one of the most inspiring shows I have ever seen.

LOUISE ALMON
PRESENT IN ABSENCE, AN EXHIBITION OF MONOTYPES CANDICE BERMAN GALERY / www.candicebermangallery.com BY LUCINDA JOLLY
Although Louise Almon trained as a painter, she is currently working primarily with monotype prints. Both mediums use pigment – and both are unique one-offs. Although painting can incorporate the element of chance and spontaneity to a certain extent, the monotype is considered the king of spontaneity and combination. Many famous artists have chosen this method, including the 18th century mystic William Blake – who is considered one of the most important artists to use this medium- as well as Pierre Bonnard, Pablo Picasso and contemporary artists such as Tracey Emin, South African icon Robert Hodgins, and Cape Town-based artist Georgina Gratrix. In a nutshell, the monotype print technique involves a non-absorbable inked or painted surface which is transferred onto a piece of paper, the outcome of which is not repeatable. After graduating in painting, Almon revisited the technique as a school teacher in the late 80s when the department of education – in their wisdom – sent a large amount of linos and inks, rather than a variety of mediums to the school where she was teaching. Thus, the medium took root. It was also a technique that suited her, as unlike painting which demands consistency, the monotype’s flexibility allowed Almon to dip in and out without compromising quality. “I love the spontaneity of the results,” she says. While Almon is never sure of “how it’s going to work out”, she still has the control of being able to “rework the image again and again”, often working on both sides of the print until it meets her specifications. She uses a
high-quality, 200-gram paper that can cope with the weight of the ink and the pressure of being worked upon. The monotype is a sensual medium which draws attention not only for its particular mark-making but also the inks themselves. In the monotypes that make up Present in Absence, there’s a sense of Almon’s slow shift from the specifically political paintings and murals of the 80s through to the hot, bloody tones of the Marikana series, and a less overtly political, generalised approach to humanity. The busy, congested atmosphere seen in her Paris series has given way to a simplified, cooler, more spacious rendition of people and their relationship with the city. Almon’s figures are often shown from above, suggesting an even greater sense of remove. This depiction was partly informed by the elevated situation of her Fordsburg studio in downtown Johannesburg, which provided a bird’s eye view of the cityscape below. Interestingly, Fordsburg with its shops and factories, was originally built as a home for miners working on the Johannesburg gold reef. Whether the relationship with the city manifests as a search for work from abroad and rural areas, or the search for an identity, it is very much part of the historical South African experience. The Natives Land Act of 1913 forced black South Africans off the land of their forefathers to serve in the mines, factories and homes of the ruling white minority. As a result, they started to populate the cities and outlying urban areas. Wars and famines in the surrounding countries of the African continent have also forced many people to find work and safety within the South African borders.
“What is the city but the people?” Coriolanus asks in the tragedy, Coriolanus by William Shakespeare 82

Despite this, the human brain is apparently not structured for living in city environments. Studies have shown that urban living raises the risk of anxiety and mood disorders. “If social density and social isolation come at the same time and hit high-risk individuals … then city-stress related mental illness can be the consequence,” says German clinician and researcher Mazda Adli in the Guardian article, Sick cities: why urban living can be bad for your mental health. Almon contextualises her title Present in Absence by suggesting that the figures in cityscapes may be present but also disconnected, even the ones shown embracing. In a sense, presentness always carries its opposite, absence. “You might be present in the city,” she explains, “but your heart lies in another country or in the rural areas. You may have left someone behind or have lost someone.” The subject matter of Present in Absence finds a parallel in the monotype print technique. For Almon executes lines, marks and manipulations in the absence of the initial colouring and design. And it is these negative spaces which hold or contain the figures. Almon believes that “it is in these inbetween
spaces that the energy is most keenly felt, and most present in its absence.” There is also a sense of paring down in these monotype prints, where the artist has moved from the clutter of detail to bare essentials. She cites this as possibly being part of her maturing process of needing less and saying less. Almon is very clear, however, that the subject matter of Present in Absence is not only about the negativity of alienation but the inclusion of a particular stillness. There is also another level to this presentness. For although Almon may not depict herself in these works, she is profoundly present in them, as their creator. In keeping with the wish of most artists, Almon hopes that the viewer will resonate with the work in Present in Absence so that they will have a sense of or a feeling of recognition of this aloneness and the stillness that comes with it. Although she has no concrete sense of future work, she is very drawn to the quality of the light in Cape Town and how it differs from the light in Gauteng, from where she moved at the end of last year. Almon is currently exploring and engaging with it.

In the words of
A bold and highly fearless impressionist
opportunity to work here and make sure we establish my career in the US as well as possible. It does not happen as quickly as we always want it, but we are thankful for the progress we have made already. There are plans we cannot say too much about, but hopefully we have more good news in a year or two. We can always live in SA again, but for now we need to be here.
What motivated the Bosch family to leave for America? I was not always so excited to live in America. SA is a fantastic country and I love my country very much. And don’t even talk about my family and friends that I had to leave behind. My husband however, had a dream of living abroad for a season and giving us and more importantly our children the opportunity to broaden our worldview. America was simply the place where the doors opened for us. It was not an easy move, but I’m grateful it happened. We learned a lot and grew tremendously.
What impact did this change make on your market in South Africa? It is hard to say with certainty, because the SA art market has changed a lot over the last four years and we were not in SA to experience the changes. I can say that we still send a lot of work to SA. Most of our anchor galleries who have represented me for the last 20 years still market my work and we are grateful for that. Maybe our SA market has grown less because of our absence, but on the other hand, we have opened a US market that we could not do without being based here.
How was your work perceived in America? We are blessed. This country welcomed us with open arms and we received permanent residency within the first

year and a half. It’s a great opportunity and it allows us to do business like any American citizen. My work has been accepted very well and sales are good. Make no mistake, the competition is amazingly high. California alone has nearly 40 million residents with fantastic artists among them. In spite of this, I have received numerous awards and this year, for the second time, I was included in the Festival of Arts, one of the most significant art festivals in the world. More than a thousand artists apply to be part of this festival while only 140 are selected to participate. It is a great honor to be part of this show and the exposure has greatly impacted my career. We sell my work right across the country and abroad in Europe.
Future plans? For now, we would like to take the
The move did not really affect my style so much. The Americans love my bold brush strokes and strong impressionistic approach. The “Plein air” method (to paint outside in the open) is very popular here. I enjoy it a lot, but it’s a bit more restrictive and my plein air work is sometimes a little more realistic than our SA collectors might remember.
Carla, the family woman. Just like in SA, I still choose to work from home so I can be near my family. Daniel is 13 years old and Sarah is almost 15. They have adapted very well, but they miss their grandparents, SA friends, the Cape and the Game Reserves a lot.
What is the family’s contribution to your art. My career is a family project. Everybody works together to make the wheels spin. My husband handles all the business and paperwork while I am only focusing on painting. I do not like admin work.

for the Honours In Curatorship programme The Centre for Curating the Archive and Michaelis School of Fine Art, in collaboration with Iziko Museums of South Africa, offer a unique set of courses in the theory and practice of curatorship. By way of lectures, visiting scholars, internships, a range of dedicated workshops and fully-funded local and international field trips, this programme aims to develop in students an awareness of the practicalities, politics and poetics of working with collections, preparing students for further study and work in the field. In 2018 there will be an exciting new focus on the growing field of object studies, and the role of objects and collections to transform our museums and exhibitions. A limited number of bursaries are available to South African citizens. Preference will be given to designated groups. Deadline: 31 October 2017 For further information, please visit www.cca.uct.ac.za Enquiries should be sent to: nancy.dantas@uct.ac.za / 021 650 7151.

his friends think he is, but might be on drugs or going psychotic. As she discusses her concerns with her son’s psychiatrist, she wonders if her past behaviour, her relationship with the adventurous and antisocial Jack, has influenced Max’s determination to use his body as a site of violent art in the pursuit of revelation. Carol cannot accept that Max’s self-harm will have any effect other than to add to the meaningless violence in the world. The novel Accident raises questions about what kind of life is worth living and what death is worth dying. It explores the different responses artists and scientists can have to violence and self-destructive behaviour, and throws into sharp relief the difficulties parents face when their children make decisions that appear incomprehensible.
ACCIDENT Author: Dawn Garisch Price: R 250.00 Contact: Helen Holyoake at Helco Promotions helen@helco.co.za
”This is Garisch’s best novel yet, totally absorbing and it is the most enthralling book I’ve ever read about the mother/son relationship.” (Mervyn Sloman, Owner of The Book Lounge) ‘I have never read anything so perfectly said and is exquisitely honest about the need tolive and the need to die and the tearingly loving and hard relationship between mother and son.’ (Shelagh Foster, Director Franschhoek Literary Festival) Carol Trehorne’s only child, Max, is in ICU with severe burns. Max, a performance artist, has set himself alight. He recovers but it becomes clear that he is planning further performances that will put him at risk of serious injury or death. Carol, a single parent and a GP in a busy suburban practice, is worried that her son is not the genius
100
“Dawn Garisch is boldly imaginative and thought provoking in this riveting account of a performance artist whose shocking acts challenge us to question important social issues. The novel is also a story of a mother and son relationship that walks a tightrope of when to hold on and when to let go.” (Kate Gottgens, artist) Accident is Dawn Garisch’s sixth published novel, she has also had a collection of poetry, a non-fiction work and a memoir published. Her short stories and poetry have appeared in anthologies, journals and magazines. She has had a short play and short film produced, and has written for television and newspaper. Three of her novels have been published in the UK. In 2007, her poem ‘Blood Delta’ was awarded the DALRO prize. In 2010 Trespass was shortlisted for the Commonwealth prize for fiction in Africa, and in 2011 her poem ‘Miracle’ won the EU Sol Plaatjie Poetry Award. In 2013, her short story ‘What To About Ricky’ won the NAF FUNDED Short. Sharp. Story competition. Dawn is interested in trans-disciplinary work in science and art, and between different art forms. She teaches life writing and creative method courses, is a practising medical doctor and lives in Cape Town.

A HISTORY OF THE IZIKO SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL GALLERY Author: ANNA TIETZE Price: R 290.00 Juta Customer Services Tel: +27 21 659 2300 Email: orders@juta.co.zahelen@helco.co.za
In South Africa, with its highly contested and changing understandings of national identity, its National Gallery is no less a contested space. A History of the Iziko South African National Gallery considers questions of artistic and cultural identity, from the late 19th century to the present day. It explores how the gallery has understood its function and its public, as a ‘national’ gallery from 1930 and, before that, the chief gallery of the Cape Colony. This question is investigated through a study of the gallery’s administration, collection and exhibition practices over the last 150 years. What is understood by and expected of a national gallery varies considerably worldwide. Should it regard itself as part of a broad
international cultural discourse, or should it be representative of a specifically national – or even regional – identity? The gallery is a microcosm of the greater debate: how the South African nation relates to the larger world and how, if at all, it understands the concept of a shared culture. In the last 20 years, Museum Studies have become a major part of the field of Cultural Studies. There is a vast literature on what might be called the ‘history’ museum, but far less on the art museum or gallery. To date, there has been no large-scale historical inquiry into the Iziko SANG, the country’s national gallery. The absence of such a history marks a serious gap in the literature, which this study aims to fill. CONTENTS Introduction: the aims and scope of a national gallery. Chapter 1: The colonial gallery: acquisitions and identity, 1875-1930 Chapter 2: Collecting for a national gallery, 1930-47 Chapter 3: The post-war years, 1947-72 Chapter 4: The protest years, 1973-1989 Chapter 5: Transformation post-apartheid, 1990-2017 Conclusion Recommended for: Readers interested in South African art and history; students of Museum and Heritage, Curatorship and African Studies courses at universities locally and internationally; Friends of the SANG. THE GOOD READ: ARTHUR GOLDREICH THE ARTIST WHO HELPED BUILD A NEW SOCIETY AT THE EXPENSE OF HIS OWN CAREER By Warren Siebrits
Although many South Africans will be familiar with the name Arthur Goldreich (1929-2011) as one of the four men who escaped from John Vorster Square, in the wake of the Liliesleaf Farm raid that led to the infamous treason trial in 1964, not many people will know that he was one of the leading contemporary South African painters of his day. In 1955, the year William Kentridge was born, Arthur Goldreich won the coveted Best Young South African Painter Award for his striking figural compositions, mostly done in black and white. In the same year Robert Hodgins (1920-2010) won the Most Promising Young South African Artist. These two awards were given by the Pretoria branch of the South African Association of Arts to mark Pretoria’s centenary celebrations.
police custody after he was caught disguised as a chauffeur in a police roadblock just outside Howick, Natal. Goldreich was also part of the underground leadership of Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation). Many of the central meetings regarding the continuation and intensification of the armed struggle, happened at Liliesleaf Farm. Goldreich was the tenant in whose name Liliesleaf Farm was registered and he appeared, on the surface, to live a quiet, suburban life, with his wife Hazel and their two sons Nicholas and Paul. Living at the farm for an extended period of time in one of the outbuildings, under the guise of a domestic servant, was David, aka Nelson Mandela, who was the Umkhonto we Sizwe’s commander-and-chief. As Mandela explained in his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom:
Portraits of Goldreich, Wolpe and Mandela at the time of their arrests in 1963 on charges of high treason

This week marks the 54th anniversary of Goldreich’s escape from the clutches of the security police after spending exactly a month in jail, having been arrested at Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia on 11 July 1963 along with Walter Sisulu, Dennis Goldberg, Govan Mbeki, Lionel Bernstein, Ahmed Kathrada, Raymond Mhlaba and other underground members of the banned African National Congress (ANC). One must remember that Nelson Mandela had been arrested months earlier and was already in

Arthur had fought with the Palmach, the military wing of the Jewish National Movement in Palestine. He was knowledgeable about guerrilla warfare and helped fill in many gaps in my understanding…Arthur was a flamboyant person and as a result he gave Liliesleaf Farm a buoyant character. After winning the prestigious award as Best Young Painter in South Africa Goldreich went on to be selected to paint all the setdesigns and design all the costumes for King Kong, a play that was not only seen by 120 000 people of all races in South Africa, but which then went on to tour Britain with even greater success and accolades. By this time

THE GOOD READ
Arthur Goldreich had become internationally known as one of South Africa’s foremost fine artists. Goldreich was 33 years old when he was commissioned to design the costumes and sets for King Kong. Interestingly William Kentridge was 32 years old, just one year younger than Goldreich, when he painted all the set-designs for Sophiatown which opened at the Market Theatre in 1987.
mural in Port Elizabeth; has designed fabrics for Bliedenstein, Paris and book jackets for Collins, London. Won first prize for painting at the 1955 Pretoria Centenary. Arthur Goldreich has acquired a reputation for virile, abstract canvases, but more significant than his painting is his achievement in the field of applied design, where he reveals daring and imagination. His individuality and confident handling of bold colour were most notably demonstrated in the vibrant visual setting for the jazz-opera, ‘King Kong’.

As Esme Berman described Goldreich in Harold Jeppe’s South African Artists 1900-1962 published by Afrikaanse Pers-Boekhandel the following year: Since 1955 Goldreich has exhibited in Johannesburg, Pretoria and in New York at the Petite Gallery. His public commissions include sets and costumes for ‘King Kong’; a large mosaic mural in Salisbury; a large concrete
Goldreich’s daring escape from John Voster Square, along with comrades Harold Wolpe, Mosie Moola and Abdulhay Jassat was achieved by bribing a young, inexperienced and gullible 19-year-old prison warder Johan Greeff. Initially Wolpe and Goldreich hid in the suburbs of Johannesburg before they were eventually driven to Swaziland and from there flown to Botswana. For much of the time the pair were disguised as priests and in so doing were able to evade capture during the biggest manhunt ever undertaken by the South African Police Force.

THE GOOD READ
In the midst of one of the most intense periods of the anti-apartheid struggle, a single engine Cessna carrying the two priests in their dog collars took off from an airstrip in Swaziland and flew across South African territory into the Bechuanaland Protectorate (which in 1966 became Botswana) where the clerics stepped out to a rapturous welcome from the local African National Congress. The escape of these two freedom fighters against the might of the apartheid police force, whilst both were on remand at Johannesburg’s most well-guarded and fortified prison, was a great victory that put an almighty dent in the pride and precision of the apartheid system. As Goldreich said when interviewed many years later: “I was driven by the Holocaust and my struggle against British colonialism, but the Nats winning the election in 1948 left me in no doubt about what I had to do.” One can only take one’s hat off to Arthur Goldreich, a Kentridge-like persona of the fine art and theatre world of his day, who sacrificed fame, fortune and social standing in order to help create a free and democratic South African society. I have searched for over twenty-five years in the knowledge of the above-mentioned history, and this is the first painting by Arthur Goldreich I have managed to locate indicating how scarce his works are today. This particular painting has a distinguished provenance and was formerly in the collection of friend and artist Aileen Lipkin (1933 - 1994). It is interesting to add that although Esme Berman wrote so glowingly about Goldreich in 1962-63, he was all but omitted from her South African Art and Artists’ Dictionary first

published by A A Balkema in 1970. It shows one how even the so-called liberal art world falls victim to political-censure and is often overly careful to maintain the status quo, which is as a rule conservative and retrogressive. For the first time since the original production, the rights to King Kong have been acquired. A revised and adapted version of this remarkable piece of South African musical theatre opened recently at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town. In September 2017, it transfers to the Joburg Theatre.
