Eight years in the making, this exhibition proved to be one of the finest shows that I have encountered in many years. Many other exhibitions that I have seen are conceptually strong, visually rich or technically well made, but I to I manages all of this in one show. The 17 sculptures that make up the show are seamless, tight and gloriously made with careful attention to detail, finish and presentation. The show made me feel nostalgic for a time when craft and finish were as important as material and meaning as demonstrated by sculptors like Gavin Younge, Bruce Arnott, David Brown and the late Peter Schutz. In the changed world of contemporary art, process is often seen as more important than the finished work, resulting in an interesting visual experience but sometimes a hollow end response. In the work of Van der Schijff, this is not so, the richness of the pieces satisfied my every need as a sculptor and art collector. I would willingly have taken any piece to my collection. But what is it that makes this exhibition so complete? In the manufacture1 Van der Schijff creates sculptures that are so beautifully made that the viewer pours over the work lingering on details and marveling in the craftsmanship in the way that one would a fine piece of Chippendale furniture. In the presentation everything is finely tuned2 and operates as one large installation where every work speaks to every other work on many levels. But it is in the conceptual richness that the show excels most. Van der Schijff examines the world around us, his world, and presents snapshots of the everyday, the mundane, the ordinary but framed in a new way. Everyday objects3 like dog food bowls or soft drink can and plastic sandwich wrapper are represented as wooden sculptures, monumentalised in their making. In addition to these types of works are those that set up enforced binary conversations or implied interactions where the viewer is invited to complete the work in their mind. Arm wrestling podium, Public foot washing podium, Truth and Confession podium and Confession podium4 are 4 such works. The human figure is absent but implied in relation to the interaction suggested. These politically charged pieces imply power struggles, confession and perhaps forgiveness and are framed by the history of South Africa over the last two decades. This powerful exhibition is thought provoking, emotionally charged and magnificent in its portrayal of the mundane. 1. I use this word purposely because the artist makes use of industrial processes like CNC milling, Laser cutting and Computer Aided Design programs to achieve his aim. 2. Van der Schijff even prescribes the distance between works in the captions to images in his noteworthy catalogue. 3. Which he says are connected to daily rituals like feeding the dog or eating store bought packaged lunches. 4. The NIROX Foundation in collaboration with The Yorkshire Sculpture Park presents:

A Place in Time THE WINTER SCULPTURE FAIR 30 April – end July 2016

NIROX Foundation is excited to announce a unique exhibition in the UNESCO Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, some 5km from the recent extraordinary discovery of what is arguably a previously unknown hominin species, Homo Naledi. A Place in Time presents over 40 new sculptures by artists from Africa, Europe and the USA – including Richard Long, Willem Boshoff, Nandipha Mntambo, Tom Price, Moataz Nasr, Rachael Champion, Anton Burdakov, Tom Price, Serge Nitegeka, Mikhael Subotsky, Angus Taylor and Marco Cianfanelli – created in response to this highly significant environment. The exhibition considers contemporary sculpture practice within a human tradition to make and appreciate objects that is seemingly as old as we are, underpinned by an exceptional display of artifacts on loan from the University of the Witwatersrand Origins Centre Museum collection, curated by Lara Mallen. A Place in Time, is curated by Helen Pheby PhD, Senior Curator at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, in collaboration with MaryJane Darroll, assisted by interns Naudia Yorke and Danika Bester. It will celebrate, encourage and share with the world the highest standard of creative practice informed by and focusing attention on the exceptionally important context of South Africa as a centre of global heritage and an exciting contemporary art destination. Apart from imparting curatorial experience through its interns, A Place in Time will actively engage in programs with local schools, arts students and tertiary education facilities. NIROX will extend its good relations with the Universities of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and Tshwane through talks and workshops by participating artists and student tours through the park with the curators. NIROX and YSP will advance their partnership with each other and their relations with like-minded institutions including Wanas Sculpture Park in Sweden, the Columba Leadership Academy and the Clare & Edoardo Villa Will Trust. The exhibition will preview for the media and collectors on the weekend of 30 April 2016 and open to the public on the weekend of 7 May 2016. THE WINTER SCULPTURE FAIR is an annual event attracting a wide and enthusiastic audience. The exhibition will remain open and free to the public on weekends (or otherwise by appointment) until the end of July 2016.

About the Yorkshire Sculpture Park Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) is the leading international centre for modern and contemporary sculpture. It is an independent charitable trust and registered museum situated in the 500-acre, 18th-century Bretton Hall estate in West Yorkshire. Founded in 1977 by Executive Director Peter Murray, YSP was the first sculpture park in the UK, and is the largest of its kind in Europe, providing the only place in the world to see Barbara Hepworth’s The Family of Man in its entirety alongside a significant collection of sculpture, including bronzes by Henry Moore, and site-specific works by Andy Goldsworthy, David Nash and James Turrell. ART TIMES ARTISTS’ BIRTHDAYS

Roger Ballen

11 April 1950 –

Roger Ballen was born in New York. During high school, an interest in photography was sparked by the photographic material his mother left around the house. She was an editor for Magnum Photo agency at the time. Ballen was given his first camera upon graduated high school. His mother passed away shortly afterwards resulting in a fervour with taking interesting photographs. After studying psychology at the University of California and receiving his PhD in Mineral Economics from the Colorado School of Mines, in 1982 Ballen arrived in Johannesburg to work in geology. He has been based there ever since. In the early 1990’s, Ballen began photographing the poorer white residents of rural South Africa. His portrayal was not considered socially acceptable and at the release of his first photographic book, he was arrested and received death threats. As his practice matured, so the line between art and documentary began to fade and a dark playfulness entered his work. In 2012, Ballen collaborated with Die Antwoord on the music video I Fink U Freeky, which reached worldwide popularity. Ballen’s work is in prestigious museum collections including London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, and New York’s Museum of Modern Art. In 2013, the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution presented a major retrospective of Ballen’s work, to critical acclaim.

Joan Miró

20 April 1893 – 25 December 1983

Joan Miró was born in Barcelona, to a family of craftsmen (watchmakers, goldsmiths, cabinetmakers and blacksmiths). In 1907, he began attended the Lonja School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, at the same time attending business school. Following a nervous breakdown, he devoted himself fully to art and later also attended the Gali School of Art. The ideas of André Breton and the Surrealists inspired Miró but he did not hold to their doctrine. The artist stated that his surrealist, biomorphic forms were derived from hallucinations brought on by starvation, when he first moved to Paris in 1919. Miró married Pilar Juncosa in 1929 and their only child, Dolores, was born in 1931. In 1954, Miró was given the Venice Biennale print making prize, in 1958 the Guggenheim International Award. The first retrospective of his work was held at MoMA New York in 1972 and was followed by an honorary degree from the University of Barcelona in 1979. Miró created over 250 illustrated books in his career. In the last years of his life, he wrote of his most radical ideas: gas sculpture and four-dimensional painting. Two museums were dedicated to his work, one in his native Barcelona, the other in his adopted Palma de Mallorca.

Bridget Riley

24 April 1931 –

Born in London, Bridget Riley’s father and grandfather were both painters before her. In 1939, Riley’s family went to live in Cornwall away from the blitz. Here in the countryside she spent hours watching the changing light, colour and cloud formations, which she says impacted her visual awareness. She went on to study at Goldsmiths College, London (1949-52) and later at the Royal College of Art (1952-55). From 1957 she began working on-and-off as an illustrator for an advertising agency and as an art teacher at various schools. Under the teachings of Harry Thubron and Maurice de Sausmarez, Riley began to develop her own style exploring the disorienting physical effects on the eye, which came to be known as Op Art. Riley’s paintings came to International notice when she exhibited along with Victor Vasarely and others in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Riley continues to paint and exhibit all over the world. Her major paintings are very large and take 6 - 9 months to complete. Astonishingly, everything is painted by hand – no rulers, masking tape or mechanical means are used in the final application.

Hasan & Husain Essop

24 April 1985 –

The Essop brother are fraternal twins, born in Cape Town. When they were young boys they would compete over who could colour-in better. Since art school, they have collaborated with each other instead. They say that, “As twin brothers, we have set out to find ourselves in each other... Trying to create something new each time, a story unfolds and never ends.” They graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT) in 2006, with a BA in Fine Art, majoring in Printmaking and Photography, respectively. They were signed to Goodman Gallery shortly after. Since then they have become known for their photography and have earned their postgraduate diplomas in both Art and Education from UCT. In 2014, the brothers won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award whereby their solo exhibition toured SA. They have also exhibited at England’s Victoria and Albert Museum and France’s Institut d’Art Contemporain; not to mention biennales in Dakar, Havana and Mali. Hasan and Husain Essop currently live in Cape Town. Both are married and work for an NGO called Lalela Projects, where they teach children aged 7 to 17.

Yves Klein

28 April 1928 – 6 June 1962

French-born Yves Klein was the son of two artists. His mother (Marie Raymond) was a leading figure in the Art Informel movement, and his father (Fred Klein) painted in a Post-Impressionist style. One day in 1947, young Klein lay on the beach with fellow artistic Judo-enthusiasts Claude Pascal and Arman Fernandez. The friends imagined the universe divided between them. Klein imagined possessing the planet empty of matter, or “the Void”. This moment led Klein to dabble in painting, performance and music. He learnt painting techniques while working in a frame shop but never received formal art training. He went on to study Judo in Japan, earning a black belt. Upon returning to France, the French Judo Association would not recognize his degree so he dedicated himself fully to art. He began painting with his girlfriend who had done extensive research on colour perception. The next year, Klein created his own shade of ultramarine (International Klein Blue). He became known for using this colour monochromatically on canvas and printing it off of naked models. Klein had his first retrospective in 1961, in Germany. The following year he married artist Rotraut Uecker. He died only months later of a heart attack brought on by amphetamine abuse.

Clare Menck

29 April 1969 -

Clare Menck was born in Durban. A painter like her grandmother, Sigrid Menck, Clare received her BA in Fine Art (cum laude) from the University of Stellenbosch in 1990. She then achieved an Advanced Diploma in Fine Art from the Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT) in 1991, a Masters in painting from the University of Stellenbosch in 1996, and finally Post-graduate studies at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Dresden, Germany, in 1998. During that time she juggled the roles of artist, lecturer, wife and mother of two. She has since had studios in Woodstock (Cape Town), Prince Albert (Karoo), Paris (France), Piketberg and Moorreesburg (both Swartland), where she resides at present. Menck works almost exclusively in oil paint. Generally autobiographic in nature, her paintings reflect a series of moments involving herself, her family and her friends – in a sense documenting her public and private life. According to Frank Kilbourn, these paintings “have a promise of intimacy and a hint of disquiet”. Menck won the prestigious Kanna Award at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival in 2007.

Subterrafuge (2014-2015) Six tall spikes pierced the Karoo sky, looming over the gathering at AfrikaBurn 2014. Topping the Guinness World Record for the largest wooden sculpture, a twenty-three metre tall Sioux Indian Head made by Michel Schmid (Switzerland, 2008), AfrikaBurn’s Subterrafuge was extraordinary. In twelve shades of blue and brown that echoed the landscape at midday, six timber towers reached four to thirty metres in height, and half a metre to six metres in width. Their geometry adding to strangeness of the sight, the spires rose breathtaking and alien against the desert landscape. Not that ‘weirding’ the landscape is a foreign concept for AfrikaBurn. Every year around Easter time, the Tankwa Karoo becomes the temporary home of several thousand artistic individuals. For just shy of a week, they drive around in art-cars, build fantastical sculptures and wear peculiar outfits; enjoying a gift-giving economy and the freedom of nature. Based on the American equivalent, Burning Man, tradition dictates that sculptures are built on-site and ceremonially set ablaze, in part a further iteration of spiritual release. In the year that Subterrafuge was completed, the artwork was deemed unsafe to burn because of the risk strong winds would pose to its burning heights. So as rarely happens, the artwork survived until the following year’s gathering and was set ablaze in 2015.

What sets this artwork apart from most AfrikaBurn pieces is the activism behind its creation. Points thrust high into the sky, the artwork conceptually, diametrically opposes piercing the earth for the sake of fracking. For a time prior to conception, oil companies had been threatening to begin mechanically extracting underground gas in the Karoo. Fracking is quite destructive to the ecology of the affected area. Moreover, environmentalists believe that it may have far-reaching consequences for the greater environment. Group X’s initial statement proclaims that the creation of Subterrafuge in resistance to fracking but also to “all profit driven destruction of our last vestiges of natural wonder”. It was initially projected that erecting the artwork would cost approximately R 1 000 000. Faced by this seemingly insurmountable sum, Group X instituted a crowd-funding initiative and spread the word about their project through various supporting platforms. Although they were not able to reach anywhere near their target amount, the support for their project was so strong that with donated time, equipment and materials, they were able to bring costs down to a manageable R 60 000. The heroism of the tale does not stop there. On 3 June 2014, severe winds buffeted all infrastructure in the wider Tankwa Karoo area. Although farm buildings were damaged and houses lost their roofs,

To sum up the poignancy of what Subterrafuge represents, I refer back to the Initial Statement by Group X: “The times we live in make it hard to observe something of beauty without bringing to mind it‘s potential defacement or destruction. The vast Karoo in South Africa is no exception. As long as 200 years ago there were already reports and complaints of overgrazing by the sheep farmed in this area. During these times entire species of plants were grazed to extinction. The cosmology and the zoology of the area was also changed by systematic murder of the native nomadic hunter-gatherers and the hunting and killing dozens of species of animal to near extinction. Vincent Da Silva Sculpts Movement Vincent da Silva sees movement and brings to life bronzes of distinction. His attention was originally drawn by the graceful motion of the cat. The artist explored the subject matter, developing an understanding of the cat’s anatomy before extending his focus to the anatomy of other animals. The wild nature of horses captured his imagination. Meticulously planning and gently stripping away the perception of the horse, he echoed the raw nature of the horse in the way expressed in his wildlife works. As an artist, da Silva reflects a very analytical way of producing bronzes, yet the ferocity and grace in which he produces the art is intuitive. The studio is where everything begins. It is this space in which he can sit and reflect on sculptural thoughts. There is a constant need from within to create and make something. To da Silva, freedom of expression is bringing the art of sculpting back to the simplest most honest way of understanding. Bad Man tops Great Sale STRAUSS & CO | CAPE TOWN At Strauss & Co’s auction on 14 March 2016 in Cape Town, Robert Hodgins’ roguish Bad Man with Great Threads sold for R2,4 million, more than three times the pre-sale estimates. Works by Hodgins dominated the top ten lots of the sale reaffirming this artist’s pre-eminence in the art market. Strauss & Co holds the world record of R2,6 million for Hodgins. The sale achieved a market-leading sellthrough rate of 84%, and a total of R42 million. The art component alone totalled R35 million – this is the highest total for South African art achieved at auction this year, once again asserting Strauss & Co’s position as global market leader. South Africans flocked to the preview and saleroom and bid enthusiastically throughout the sale. There was also plenty of interest from international buyers who took full advantage of the favourable exchange rates, not least the top quality items on offer. Treasures once part of the historic Vergelegen estate in Somerset West achieved a total of close on R2,4 million. The rare pair of Cape Neoclassical side tables sold for over R700 000. A single owner collection of fine Cape silver had a 100% sellthrough rate and achieved over R1,1 million. An astonishing result was achieved when ten international bidders vied on the telephones for a group of Persian paintings by the Russian artist Paul Mak which sold for R932 000. Following the auction, Dendy Easton, visiting auctioneer and well-known personality from the BBC Antiques Road Show, commented: This exceptional result underscores Strauss & Co’s power to exploit the internet to reach a global audience. Walter Battiss’s Red Rock rocked the auction room when it achieved over R1,8 million, Maggie Laubscher’s Birds and Boats reached close on R1,5 million, followed by Irma Stern’s Ndebele Woman mixed media that sold for over R1,1 million. The sale featured a number of major works by William Kentridge which were snapped up by collectors. These results are proof of the continuing excellence and resilience of Strauss & Co’s team in combating a volatile market.

The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) promises to be the most significant cultural development on the continent since the Cairo Museum more than 100 years ago. Officially announced in 2013, the four-year project crossed the halfway mark last year with a number of construction safety awards, recognising the project management team’s efforts to keep the 2017 opening date on track. The V&A Waterfront can now confirm that Zeitz MOCAA will open to the public on 25 September 2017, in the ambitiously reimagined historic Grain Silo complex. However, it is not just the construction of the building that will house Africa’s largest contemporary art collection that requires careful planning: the museum’s curatorial process, funding plans and operation structures are already taking firm shape ahead of the opening. In addition to the opening date announcement,

the Zeitz MOCAA Board of Trustees was announced during the Gala Dinner, with some of the biggest South African philanthropists taking seats on the Board: Suzanne Ackerman-Berman, David Green, Isaac Julien, Wengechi Mutu, Gassant Orrie, Albie Sachs, and Jochen Zeitz. V&A CEO David Green and German businessman Jochen Zeitz will co-chair the Board. As a not-for-profit institution, fundraising is critical to building the necessary endowments that will fund not only operations but also museum advancement. The Zeitz MOCAA Gala Dinner, presented by Standard Bank Wealth and Investment, will become an annual fundraising event for the museum, along the lines of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual gala dinner. Chief Executive of Standard Bank Wealth and Investment, Margaret Nienaber, commented on their support: “We are passionate about Africa and her growth story and potential. Throughout our more

than 150 year history and our involvement in the Arts we have been fortunate to share in the stories of some extraordinary individuals, some of whom will also contribute to the success of Zeitz MOCAA. Our clients have always shown an interest in, and a passion for, the Arts and we believe that Zeitz MOCAA is a celebration of Africa’s rich cultural heritage and a wonderful platform for shaping the next generation leaders.” This year, ticket sales for the gala raised R2.5 million for the Access for All Campaign. This will ensure that no one is ever turned away from Zeitz MOCAA due to the inability to afford admission. Thanks to Access for All, the museum will have some free days every week. The intention is for Zeitz MOCAA to co-exist symbiotically and facilitate within the cultural and educational sectors in South Africa, and play an important role in propelling the sectors on many levels.

Call for Entries From SA’s Biggest Art & Design Prize, PPC Imaginarium Awards

Following the resounding success of the PPC Imaginarium Awards 2015/16 - where a total of 47 regional Finalists were selected to exhibit compared to the previous year’s tally of 21 Finalists – the official Call to Entry for the third edition of the awards goes out on Friday, 15 April 2016. Entry registrations should be submitted online via the official website, www.ppcimaginarium.co.za. Un-established artists and designers stand a chance to change their careers through financial support, recognition, mentorship and guidance by entering the PPC Imaginarium Awards 2016/17. Having evolved from the longstanding PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards, the PPC Imaginarium encourages artists and designers to create and express their abilities using Portland

cement-based concrete as a primary base or material. The competition will feature six disciplines in the arts and design fields. These disciplines are sculpture, jewellery, architecture, film, industrial and fashion design. Boasting prize money to the value of half a million Rand, each category winner stands a chance to win R50 000, while runner-up contestants receive R15 000. The overall competition winner will receive the grand prize of R100 000 at the winners’ exhibition in 2017. The PPC Imaginarium Awards are open to South African citizens, resident holders as well as foreign students with study permits, who are not professionally established in their respective fields. Artists and designers may enter multiple categories, with an original artwork for each category. Team submissions and collaborations will be accepted. Entries close on Friday, 30 September 2016. The winners in each competition category will be announced in March 2017 and their work will be on display at the University of Johannesburg in Auckland Park. The overall competition winner announcement will take place in April 2017. All finalists’ entries will be showcased in a travelling exhibition professionally transported by Stuttafords Van Lines. PPC Imaginarium Awards Winner 2015/16 Jewellery design shines brightly as an up-andcoming young ring designer becomes the Overall Winner of the PPC Imaginarium Awards, South Africa’s most supportive art and design competition for emerging creatives Last year, it was an innovatively designed – and fully functional -concrete speaker that caught the eyes (and ears) of the jury. This year, a pair of tinted cement rings set fetchingly with gemstones and shaped into organic forms inspired by human anatomy – our bones, to be precise - have stolen the show! Their creator, Mignon Daubermann, has scooped prize money to the tune of R150 000 after being announced as the Overall Winner of the 2015/2016 PPC Imaginarium Awards! cultural programme of First Thursdays. There’s a big opportunity to rebuild an appreciation for art and culture, and to grow a cultur e of buying and collecting art. For artists it’s a platform on which one can do things and ensure you have a captive audience, whether that’s for an exhibition opening, a performance, or an installation. For those who attend it’s an accessible, enriching experience that is extremely novel, especially in the context of South African cities. It’s an opportunity to see things one wouldn’t normally see, to interact with strangers, and to discover a different side to the city. Overall I think First Thursdays has really catalysed a lot of the development of the central city, the growth in street-facing businesses, and the health of the urban economy.

AT: How did First Thursdays spread to Johannesburg? GP: We’d been thinking about it for a while, and then just said to ourselves that we’d shoot for May 2015, and did it. We actually put on a little pop-up exhibition for the first one, much like we did in Cape Town back in 2012. It began in Braamfontein, but has grown to Rosebank and

more recently Newtown. It’s still got a way to go, but we believe there’s a lot of potential there. We’re also very interested in how we can foster dialogue between Cape Town and Johannesburg through First Thursdays as a platform. AT: Has the concept of First Thursdays changed much since its inception? GP: No. It’s still very much about the cultural programme, primarily art galleries keeping their doors open late. Because there are a lot of retail stores, restaurants and bars that take part many people think First Thursdays isn’t about art anymore. There are certainly people who come to what they think is “First Thursdays”, perhaps going to a bar with friends, while having no idea what it’s about. But that’s fine. Overall there are more galleries and cultural spaces than ever, and more people going to them. AT: Are there any further plans for expanding or evolving the existing model? GP: We don’t want to expand geographically

too much. We’ll let it grow organically, but our increasing focus as Thursdays Projects is to build on First Thursdays as a platform. We’re working on producing richer content and using our large media reach to educate our audience and develop the market for art, while also contributing to the programme with commissions, enabling artists by giving them access to a fund, and leaving a more permanent footprint on the city and cultural landscape. AT: How can the opportunities that First Thursdays presents be optimized for monetary gain? GP: First Thursdays provides a critical mass of people, and with those people comes a market, for whoever we’re talking about here. I think the best thing to do is to maximise the ability of these people to form a truly sustainable market and urban economy in the long run. The First First Thursdays

In November 2012, the first Cape Town ‘First Thursdays’ event drew visitors from all over the city to its small, artistic core between Wale and Strand Street. It was the perfect opportunity for 9-to-5ers to visit several galleries at once, while enjoying the city’s nightlife. On the first Thursday of subsequent months, the streets of Cape Town would become virtually gridlocked by epicureans and culture vultures alike. By May 2015 the phenomena sparked in Johannesburg. First Thursdays recently expanded to two more hubs in Johannesburg and the city’s night owls keep wanting more. We spoke to one of the men who started it all. AT: Gareth Pearson, how did the idea to start First Thursdays come about? GP: We came across the London edition of First Thursdays, liked the idea, and immediately made the connection to the area of Cape Town’s CBD just below Wale Street. The concentration of art galleries, the walkable streets, and the fact that it became somewhat void of life and activity after 5pm made it a good fit. Mike Tymbios and I were bouncing various ideas around at the time, and

this was the one that stuck. I still remember sitting down at Clarke’s in Bree Street and emailing a few galleries explaining the concept and asking if they’d try it out if there were a few other takers. They all said yes, and the first one happened with 5 galleries along with a little pop-up exhibition we put together in a vacant flower shop (now 99 Loop Gallery). AT: Did you envision then that it would become as popular as it is now? GP: In a way yes. We believed in the concept and could see the organic growth from the beginning, but we’ve also always seen it as a very long term project. It has and will continue to grow and develop, the idea being that in the long run it won’t really be a thing because the city will be more dense and urban, and the need to attract people all at once on a particular night every month won’t be necessary. On any given night the city will be full of people and late trading hours for galleries, shops, and restaurants will be normal. That’s the vision anyway.

AT: Your website says states that “First Thursdays is as much about urbanism and city space as it is about art and culture”. Can you elaborate? GP: We’re urbanists at heart, and for us First Thursdays was largely an experiment in public space. It is a vehicle through which to inject life into the city after hours, get people to walk around, and to move more towards a 24-hour, urban city compared to the very suburban city that Cape Town currently is - one where everyone goes home at 5pm. We also see it as a truly public experience - one that does not require any transaction in order to partake. Many of our “public” experiences take place in commercial environments. This is not that. AT: In what ways does First Thursdays benefit the community in which it operates? GP: For the art galleries as well as the retail spaces and restaurants it brings a new audience, a large audience, and additional sales. What we’re really interested in is the development of that audience, educating them, and increasing the level of engagement they have with the
