Known as the creator of the “milky white’ sea foam, Galatea was a sea nymph in Greek Mythology. Associated with elements of water, the Nereids were the personified female spirits of the oceans.
In ancient Greek Mythology Artemis is the goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, nature, childbirth, the caring of children and chastity. She often roamed the forests of Greece and is the daughter of Zeus and Leto. Her Roman equivalent is the goddess Diana. She is a symbol of female strength and independence, embodying the untamed and wild aspects of the natural world.
In 1579, an African man now known by the name of Yasuke arrived in Japan. He served the daimyo Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period and was the first known foreigner to achieve Samurai status.
Taught by her father, a Shaolin master, Fang Chi Liang was devastated by his death when he was attacked and swore revenge. She realised, however, that her Kung Fu skills were not up to the task given her small stature. While pondering this problem, it is said that she was disturbed by a large crane that screeched and landed close to her. Fang tried to beat it away using a long pole, but the crane fended off her attacks easily by using its agility.
Amazed by the crane’s grace and relaxed speed, Fang began to formulate a Kung Fu style known as White Crane based on its use of evasion and counter attack. After intense training Fang Chi Liang was able to avenge her father’s death.
Xun Guan (born in the early 4th century) was a Chinese female warrior that lived during the Jin dynasty and who famously led a group of soldiers into battle at the age of thirteen. As daughter of the governor of Xiangyang and a highly skilled martial artist, Xun is said to have broken through enemy lines to assemble reinforcements and prevent the city of Xiangyang from being invaded. Her story continues to inspire and captivate audiences, symbolising the strength and determination of women in history.
Lowering his mask, this unnamed Samurai reveals his face. Called Men-Yoroi or Menpo, these masks were facial armour worn by Japanese Samurai. They were designed not only to protect the face but also to intimidate the enemy.
Mochizuki Chiyome was a 16th century noble woman and poet, however she made her mark in history as being responsible for creating an all-female group of ninja known as the Kunoichi.
In ancient Japan, a Kensei was an honorary title given to a warrior of legendary skills in swordsmanship. The literal translation of kensei is “sword saint”. The term is considered by some to imply a higher degree of perfection and possibly also encompass a higher moral dimension.

Rug tufting is an artistic technique that combines the traditional craft of rug making with contemporary design and in this case, portraiture. Melbourne textile designer Marnee Watt found this creative medium in 2020 and was inspired by it’s uniqueness, colours, and textures.

“This piece feels like you are skipping through a lavendar field on a sunny day, with the warmth of the sun on your cheek. There is just something about green, orange and a touch of ash pink that I love together. These colours make me smile.”
“A work of pure joy and creativity. Letting go of surrounding noise and just exploring on a canvas. This is my first all oil medium piece. I am absolutely obsessed with the texture oil on linen has given this piece. All the details in the brush strokes are magic.” – Lena

“I used purple in this painting as it is my colour of vulnerability. I feel like a lot of inspiration and growth can come from a place of vulnerability if we let go and reach for this part of ourselves.” – Lena

“A painting that looks and feels instantly better upside down. My secret is that a lot of my paintings are painted upside down. I layer and layer and they never feel finished until I flip them upside down and it’s like magic. They feel right.” – Lena
“I constantly have this voice in my head telling me that I’m ‘not allowed’ or that ‘I shouldn’t’ experiment with a block style because it feels like I’m being unfaithful to my messy work.
I’m really happy that I put myself first and just created a collection purely for me and what I wanted to paint at the time.” – Lena
“This painting is inspired by long walks and hiking which are some of my favourite activities. Nothing beats the feeling of hiking up a hill through a valley that is cold and you see peaks of the sun shining through as you get higher to the top or look out.”
– Lena
