What gets you up in the morning?

Swimming! I swim 4 times a week, sometimes more in summer, and I absolutely love it. I rise before dawn at 4.45, and swim with a squad of other adult swimmers for an hour before grabbing a coffee and heading home to get the kids ready for school. I am not a fast swimmer, but I can steadily swim long distances. Once a year I participate in a 10km swim marathon with renders me useless for several days afterwards!

What is the strangest job you’ve had?

I trained as a social worker and when I was in my 20’s I lived in the UK, and worked at a sexual health/ relationships clinic for young people. Whenever the young people came to an appointment, they saw the counsellor (me). It was my job to teach them all how to put on condoms. I had a big box skin tones, and would need to place one of them in my lap to do the condom demonstration! It was certainly one of the most awkward work roles I have had, and produced many funny moments!

What is your favourite thing about being an artist?

When I find 'flow'. I love it when I get absorbed in a painting, and time passes by so fast because I am completely consumed by the technical creative task I am immersed in. Psychologists say this state of flow is really good for mental health, and I can see why! I feel so great when I have found flow for a few hours - but I can't always achieve it if a painting isn’t going very well.
