ART TORONTO 2017 SHOW GUIDE
/FOCUS: Los Angeles FOCUS: Los Angeles, the feature section of this year’s fair, gives visitors a taste of the increasingly relevant and burgeoning art scene on the west coast. In recent years, Los Angeles has redefined itself as a major centre for artistic production and curatorial vision. What is it precisely about LA, its history, values and physicality that draws artists, curators and gallerists to it today? FOCUS: Los Angeles unpacks and highlights contemporary cultural praxis from this city. Artist Project Series: And The Sky is Grey The FOCUS: Los Angeles Artist Project Series, curated by Santiago Vernetti, presents a number of projects by LA artists placed throughout the fairgrounds. These include in-situ installations, the latest in genre bending virtual reality work by LA new media artists and a microcinema showcasing some of LA’s most experimental and engaging moving image art practices. This central group exhibition features works by Christopher Coy, Karen Lofgren, Grant Levy-Lucero, Christopher Richmond, Nicolas Grenier, Jake Longstreth, Kandis Williams and other artists whose practices have been shaped by the city’s complex cultural history and landscape. Additionally, a number of projects by Los Angeles based artists have been placed throughout the common areas including FLOAT, a future-facing virtual institution from Kate Parsons, Ben Vance, and Daniel Lisi, the Sorry’s Bar, an art installation by Adam Stamp and recent sculptural work by Josh Callaghan. Additional Programming In addition to the Artist Project Series, FOCUS: Los Angeles includes the participation of eight leading galleries representing the Los Angeles area, an engaging panel talk, Beyond the Hype, moderated by LA-journalist Jori Finkel of The New York Times and The Art Newspaper, as well as a live comedy performance, Aesthetical Relations, hosted by LA-based art writer and comedian Christina Catherine Martinez. 2 Curated by Santiago Vernetti Santiago Vernetti is an independent curator and writer based in Los Angeles. Some of his most recent group exhibitions include Top Five Buddy Cop Films at Steve Turner, Thus Spake the Fungus at Arturo Bandini, and Aria Dean, Merideth Hillbrand, Hannah Boone at Club Pro Los Angeles. His writings have been featured in FOUNDATIONS Magazine, LXAQ, Baumtest and his essays have been included in a variety of artist books and catalogues including Transmorphing Utopia, a monograph on the work of Paul W Waddell. He was previously at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and is currently at work on a group exhibition of site-responsive works for the Angels Gate Cultural Center with co-curator Jeanne Dreskin.

/PLATFORM Speaker Series + POWER TALKS Hear from influential art world figures and find out what’s trending in the international scene from artists, writers and curators and immerse yourself in all things art in this comprehensive lineup of talks on the Art Toronto stage. Talks last approximately one hour and are complimentary with admission. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27 1 PM / The Evolution of Painting: How Artists Today are pushing the Medium’s Boundaries Presented by Presenting Sponsor, RBC This panel explores the shifting role of paint in an artist’s practice. Paint is no longer just applied to canvas; it is molded, stretched, knitted and sculpted to create works that defy traditional notions of what a painting can be. Nicholas Brown (Manager of Programming, Canadian Art), leads a discussion on how this shift not only impacts an artist’s practice, but also strongly influences the legacy of art in Canada. Panelists include Corrie Jackson (Associate Art Curator, RBC), Beth Stuart (Artist) and Jonathan Shaughnessy (Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Canada). 2:30 PM / Meet the 2017 Sobey Art Award Winner Presented by the Sobey Art Foundation and the National Gallery of Canada The winner of the 2017 Sobey Art Award, Canada’s prestigious contemporary art prize for professional artists 40 and under will speak with Mary Lynk, award winning journalist and producer for CBC radio’s IDEAS program about his/her work and career. Initially a nominee among 25 longlisted artists from across Canada, the winner was selected by an international jury from a shortlist of five. Since its inception in 2002, the annual award has had an undeniable impact on the careers of young Canadian artists. In collaboration with the Sobey Art Foundation and the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Museum at the University of Toronto is presenting the work of the five finalists from October 24 to December 9, 2017. 4 PM / POWER TALK: Charles Gaines, Systems, Structures and the Politics of Subjectivity Presented by The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery LA-based artist Charles Gaines will discuss his early work in systems and numerals to his most recent work with language and representation. This will 4
include a discussion of ways the work rethinks notions of subjectivity and how they are manifested in works of art. 6 PM / Tania Willard: Site/ation Presented by C Magazine Using concepts of Indigenous epistemology, land rights and creative acts, curator and artist Tania Willard will discuss her approach to recent curatorial and artist led projects. Centering methods of acknowledging territory and developing relationship with site, and contrasting notions of in-situ, Site/ation acknowledges the deep artfulness and Indigenous land rights holders of all sites in Canada. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28 1 PM / Perspectives on Collecting: Fine Art and Beyond Presented by Show Sponsor, AXA ART How can different types of collections inform our view of contemporary art? What common passion drives the collection and interest in objects from decorative arts to fashion or artefacts to religious works? Join AXA ART’s Iris Handke as she interviews all panelists as they investigate their own curatorial eye and if their insights into the artistry of certain objects informs or enhances viewership of traditionally held artistic media. Panelists include Kelvin Browne (Executive Director and CEO, Gardiner Museum), Filiz Çakir Philip (Curator, Aga Khan Museum) and Alexandra Palmer (Senior Curator, Royal Ontario Museum). 2:30 PM / FOCUS: Los Angeles: Beyond the Hype Los Angeles has undoubtedly become an exciting epicenter for artists, art schools, museums and galleries, but we’ve also begun to see backlash to all the growth, whether anti-gallery protests in Boyle Heights or concerns about mega-collectors opening their own museums. Can the city sustain all the new galleries and museums in town? 1 PM / Past Forward: Toronto’s Early Contemporary Art Scene Presented by Art Dealers Association of Canada (ADAC) In light of ADAC’s recent 50th anniversary, Georgiana Uhlyarik (Associate Curator of Canadian Art, Art Gallery of Ontario), Gisella Giacalone (Owner/Director, Mira Godard Gallery), Renann Isaacs (Director, renann isaacs contemporary art), Michael Snow (Artist) and Paul Wildridge (Director, Roberts Gallery) will discuss post-war Toronto’s contemporary galleries in a conversation-style panel. A time of creativity and innovation, we look at the game-changer dealers and artists and their contribution to art history and the Canadian art scene today. 2:30 PM / Making the Beyond Presented by the Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) cheyanne turions (Director of Education and Public Programs, VAG) leads artists Patrick Cruz, Magalie Guérin and Walter Scott in a panel discussing how the idea of the west often stands in as a metaphor for the development of a project or concept. The talk will explore how contemporary practices are aggravating the limits of western art historical discourses in framing or contextualizing the range of influences and concerns that artists are working with today.

/Edition Toronto 2 ⁄ edition is dedicated to the promotion of art book publishing in all forms, and building an appreciation for artworks produced in editions of more than one. New and returning visitors to 2 ⁄ edition will find an expanded roster of vendors, and continue to have their eyes and minds opened to alternative ways of looking at and collecting art. A stimulating and engaging series of talks, panels and special exhibitions will also be presented throughout the weekend in conjunction with the fair’s programming partners. 2 / edition is located in the Lobby level of the fair.
/MOCA Lounge

In partnership with superkül, MOCA will be sharing proposals for the entry floor landscape of its future home on Sterling Road within a lounge in the SOLO Section of the fair. superkül’s seating structure responds to the mushroom column heads found in the Tower Automotive Building, designed by architect J. W. Schreiber. Erected in 1919, the building continues to be an important early example of flat-slab concrete construction. In the lounge, MOCA's installation acts as a prototype for a circular seating composition that tests form, scale, userfriendliness and flexibility. A key element of the finish and the surface detailing will be inspired by material textures found inside the heritage building. Come join the conversation and help select final aspects of the design in the lead up to MOCA’s opening in spring 2018. 9

Grab a drink and enjoy the curated FOCUS: Los Angeles Artist Project Series. Sushi by Ah So Sushi Located at the centre of the fair, Ah So Sushi offers a selection of sushi options made fresh daily. Greens by Cashew & Clive Located at the south-east corner of the fair, Greens by Cashew & Clive offers a contemporary and fresh approach to food, taking inspiration from local produce, seasonal harvests, and international flavours.
