I

would like to first remember the victims of the recent earthquake in Japan. Our thoughts go out to those affected by this disaster. If possible, please consider sending them some help through the International Red Cross.

This month you will see significant changes to our magazine’s design. We all need a fresh look from time to time and I hope that you find it pleasing. We will fine-tune it over the next few issues. Please let us know your thoughts about the new look.

This month I begin a three article series on hospice care.

We will look at it from the eyes of a woman, Frances Jones, in hospice at the moment. We will discuss her thoughts and feelings as well as those of her immediate family.

Her incredibly courageous story will inspire all of us.

Additionally one of the articles will discuss hospice in depth to help dispel so many of the common misconceptions about this extremely important service.

We try to always emphasize health and this month we look at a different form of exercise - martial arts. Now, I do not expect you to go out and practice flying kicks and battle six ruffians at a time. No, martial arts should be

looked at as another form of exercise not only of the body, but also of the mind. I have practiced Aikido for a number of years and can attest to its value. This month’s article will discuss this martial art and hopefully interest you into starting an exercise program that is both different and beneficial for people 50 and over.

Focusing on Life I recently met with a most remarkable family. Frances Jones is in hospice care with a terminal illness. She and her family agreed to this interview so that others may learn from their experiences. We will have a series of articles on hospice centered around Fran Jones and her family, Editor.

During this interview I sat with Fran her daughters, Stephanie and Bonnie, and her sister, Mandy. Although this was obviously a terribly difficult subject to discuss they spoke to me candidly about their feelings and how they are coping with Fran’s condition. Because Fran refused to look at herself as a victim, her family drew strength from her and helped the entire extended family cope with her illness.

There are a number of misconceptions about hospice and Fran Jones’ story will shed light on this most important topic. Fran’s strength and optimism, along with her family’s support, helps her face her destiny with dignity and a courage that is admirable and inspiring.

Fran is originally from Philadelphia and had lived in Florida for the last many years. She is a twice married mother of four (three girls, one boy). Nine years ago she moved to Florida for what was to be a well-deserved retirement. Three years ago she found breast cancer while doing a self examination in Florida. Her doctors told her that the tumor was in a spot that may not have been found with a regular mammogram. So her self-examination was crucial in the early detection of the cancer.

Because the cancer was an aggressive type already at Stage 2, Fran opted for full mastectomy rather than a lumpectomy.

She did not feel sorry for herself, but rather kept a very positive attitude. Fran underwent six months of intense chemotherapy and radiation. Thankfully no trace of the cancer was found after treatments. Regular follow up tests showed no recurrence.

Although she felt good after her treatments, a routine visit in July of 2010 showed a slight irregularity in her blood test. A PET scan in August confirmed that the superaggressive cancer (now Stage 4) was in her liver and lungs.

Treatment would not help her so Fran opted for no treatment. She did not want to go through the treatments that would debilitate her. She wanted to be as lucid as

possible, using pain medication as needed. In July 2010 she was given 6 months to live. She is still going strong 9 months later and looks good. As I sat with Fran I could

Fran recently had asked to see her grandson who is a Marine in Japan. Care Alternatives was instrumental in this process and he spent last Thanksgiving with his grandmother and the rest of the family.

According to Fran: “Hospice is the best decision we ever made. A number of people had made some negative comments about hospice but obviously it was out of ignorance.” Hospice services include a social worker and She knew that Fran with children, Franny, Bonnie, chaplain services. 2010 Fran moved to Pennsylvania to live with her daughter, Stephanie, in Bucks county. A friend of Stephanie suggested Care Alternatives for hospice care. The family all agree that Care Alternatives “was and is great”. Since Fran had a prognosis of only 6 months to live she automatically qualified for hospice services.

Fran with Probably the foremost misconception about hospice is that it is only available during the last few days or weeks of life. This is not correct. A person is eligible for hospice when they receive a physician’s diagnosis that they have six months or less to live.

Fran had no insurance and was not quite yet eligible for Medicare; nonetheless, Care Alternatives took her case.

Care Alternatives reviewed her medications and suggested modifying some so that she would be more comfortable.

Fran’s caregiver, Marianne Capelli, “is wonderful”. Why? – “because she listens and she handles everything. She is very knowledgeable, easy to talk with and visits at least 1-2 times per week and is always checking in by phone”. According to Marianne “Fran’s comfort is the most important thing to us at Care Alternatives”.

Martial Arts for All Ages

I

f you think that practicing martial arts is just for the young and strong, or just for men, you would be mistaken. Like most forms of exercise it is something you start slow and build up your endurance and skill.

This month I will talk about Aikido, a martial art that I have been practicing for several years. Aikido is a mainly defensive martial art. As such, it does not use offensive techniques to defend against aggressors. Instead, Aikido is an art focused on efficiently subduing an attacker using his momentum to defeat himself. This means there is no breaking boards or bricks with your hands or head as you develop your skill. Aikido relies on evasive movements, joint manipulation techniques and throws that apply the principles of physics, not overt strength, to get the job done. So no matter what your age is, it is still possible to make Aikido work for you.

I interviewed David Nemeroff who is the Director and Chief Instructor at Aikido Masters in Whitehall to get an expert’s opinion on the benefits that people over 50 can get from practicing a martial art such as Aikido. This also is the school where I practice my Aikido.

According to Nemeroff, the benefits are many. “Aikido helps keep your mind alert. Aikido challenges your mind and develops mind/body coordination. If you do not exercise your body can atrophy and you lose muscle tone. The same is true of the mind. Aikido is a unique martial art that offers a way to exercise both.

Aikido emphasizes how to fall and land safely. Should you be in circumstances where you are pushed, tripped, or thrown to the floor, learning how to “roll” as you fall will save you from serious injury. As we get older falling is a concern due to the loss of bone density. Preventing injury from a fall to the ground is very important for those over 50.

Martial arts is growing in popularity for Boomers “But I am just a beginner and all these other students look so proficient. I’ll embarrass myself” Nemeroff: “We often hear this and I tell all newcomers that everyone has that fear at first, but we have all been there ourselves. You need a teacher who is aware of your physical limitations. The other students know that newcomers are a bit nervous and hesitant and make it a point to help them.”

Another important point in martial arts training is that you gain confidence from knowing that you can protect yourself. This confidence will reflect in the way you handle yourself. In this regard, you are less likely be targeted as a “likely victim”. Nemeroff went on to talk about the importance of breathing properly in Aikido. “The breathing techniques we teach help with relaxation and improve your body’s circulation which again leads to better health”.

“I am a woman. I cannot do that stuff”. “Aikido is unique in that it does not require physical strength. As stated earlier you use an attacker’s force against them by using quick, circular movements to evade and “throw” an opponent”.

“I am a firm believer that anything a man can do a woman can do just as well, if not better. This includes practicing the martial arts. It is extremely beneficial for a woman to know how to defend herself. Therefore, more and more women are enrolling in martial arts programs. Aikido is a great art for women because it teaches how to apply the laws of physics and use momentum so that a smaller person can subdue a much larger one. Additionally, Aikido can give women a sense of empowerment and confidence that can extend into other areas of their lives.” (“Enter into Aikido”, Nemeroff)

Retirement Dreams Fading For 50+ Pennsylvanians

by Estella Hyde, AARP Pennsylvania Volunteer State President Not so long ago, retirement consisted mostly of collecting a pension and spoiling grandchildren.

For some, the biggest worry was getting out of town to avoid the snow.

The recent national recession is bringing those dreams crashing back to earth. All you have to do is look around.

Home values have plunged. Pensions are vanishing. Stock prices go up and down. If you lose your job, well, good luck finding another -- especially if you’re over 50.

It’s no wonder older Pennsylvanians are worried. A new AARP survey of Pennsylvanians age 50 + reflects a population that still dreams of leisure pursuits, traveling and spending time with family in retirement. However, the research also shows those same individuals don’t have what they need to accomplish their most important goals due to growing fears over health care and economic issues.

Here in Pennsylvania, issues affecting older adults impact large segments of our population. Our state is home to almost two million residents over age 65 —about one in every six residents-- making Pennsylvania the nation’s third-oldest state. Another two million friends and family members provide care to our older adults.

Pennsylvanians age 50+ clearly are struggling coming to terms with a difficult economy. Almost half of those surveyed say the cost of health care and staying healthy are their top challenges. Unfortunately, rising costs and questions about access mean only three in ten have what they need to stay healthy. No matter how you feel about the health care reform law, one thing remains the same. Older adults -- like everyone else -- want to receive affordable, top-quality health care from the doctor of their choice.

While staying healthy represents the biggest concern for older adults, financial issues also are keeping them up at night. Over eight in ten adults 50+ admit they are currently worrying about one or more financial issues. Concerns over the future of Social Security and Medicare and the ability to maintain their lifestyle in retirement are worries for over six in ten.

In the wake of the severe recession, the financial stakes are higher than ever. More than 16 percent of 50+ Pennsylvanians now live below the poverty line. In addition, over 55 percent of the state’s 2.2 million social security recipients depend on

those benefits for at least half their monthly income.

Financial concerns aren’t confined to the availability of assistance programs and are quickly spreading across demographic groups. In fact, more than half of 50+ adults surveyed currently told us they are experiencing some difficulty simply paying monthly household utility bills.

As money gets tighter, older adults are becoming increasingly aggressive in protecting themselves from a growing number of scams targeting seniors. In fact almost eight in ten are so concerned about preventing identity theft and protecting themselves against unfair and deceptive business practices that they now regularly review financial statements, including credit cards. That positive development is creating smarter and better-educated consumers in a rapidly-changing marketplace.

In the end, the economy can threaten or even delay retirement for older Pennsylvanians. It can’t however, change the core values and goals we share for ourselves and our families.

orn in 1936, is an American actor, director, screenwriter, and author. When Alda was seven years old, he contracted Polio. To combat the disease, his parents administered a painful treatment regimen that consisted of applying hot woolen blankets to his limbs and stretching his muscles. This allowed him to recover from most effects of the disease.

A five-time Emmy Award and six-time Golden Globe Award winner, he is best known for his role as Hawkeye Pierce in the TV series M*A*S*H. Alda’s fame gave him a platform to speak out on political topics, and he has been a strong and vocal supporter of women’s rights and the feminist movement. He co-chaired, with former First Lady Betty Ford, the ERA Countdown campaign.

In 1975, Springsteen and the band began a five-night, 10-show stand at New York’s Bottom Line club. It convinced many skeptics that Springsteen was for real. From there his career skyrocketed.

Let’s look at the word: By definition it means “capacity to live & develop, peculiarity distinguishing the living from the nonliving, power of enduring, and lively with animated character!” All of these would certainly define how we want to live when we reach our golden years.

How do we tap into living with “vitality”? It is important that you address these qualities from every angle -- physically, socially, and mindfully! As we age all of us will have areas in our life that challenge our vitality. If we have worked at staying vital in all areas, when we have a set back in one area the other two will carry us through. Let’s look at the areas I mentioned.

First – Physically. Jack LaLanne said it best, “use it or lose it”. Moving is one of the most critical areas of our life, keeping our bodies healthy and strong will make the rest of our endeavors easier. It is never too late to start improving our physical health, our bodies are incredible in its ability to heal and improve at any age. It just takes a little consistent effort, start small and build at your own level.

The important thing is that you start and continue. Does that mean we need to be out running in our later years? Of course not, but simple exercises done at home or finding a facility that offers gentle exercise classes will assist in one phase of your vitality!

Second - Socially. It’s been proven time and time again that the people who surround themselves with healthy relationships are healthy themselves. This can be challenging as we age; friends move, loved ones pass away and often times we find ourselves in transition. Looking to build social networks that can fill those voids left by others can be “vital” in keeping our social life active. In today’s world the resources that are easily

Roy’s Reminiscences

A

s I begin this writing I must tell you I worked shiftwork, which gave me days during the week as off days to take some time for enjoyment. Evelyn and I had bicycles and we both liked to bike in the spring time from our home to the Lehigh Parkway and ride along the Little Lehigh.

In the springtime we took our wildflower book and bird books with us and I had a loose-leaf notebook to write as we made many stops to quietly observe the world’s beauty all around us.

Much in abundance and very showy were ground ivy, such a lovely shade of blue, among them were pretty Daisylike flowers that looked like Fleabanes, light pink petals and yellow centers - our wildflower book says blooms in summer, but I’m sure that’s what we say. I know I missed some of the species like May apples and Daisies to mention a couple.

They were in leaf, but not yet in bloom.

So you see, anyone can take a walk in our lovely Lehigh Parkway and see all these beauties on an early morning in spring, when the morning air is a pleasure to breathe, with I am taking a day from my notebook: “May 5, 1982, a the delicate wisps of scented air from all nature in concert. It beautiful day, so we boarded our bikes and headed for Bogert’s makes me say in my heart, “Thank you, God, for eyes to see, covered bridge and rode along the bridal path. What a beautiful a nose to smell, a brain to record and kept the thoughts of all day to be alive and see God’s handiwork all around us. the beautiful sights we shared this day.”

Although there were birds in abundance singing to add to the splendor of the signs, we gave most of our attention to the many blooms of spring flowers. I will try to mention them all but I know I will miss some as they were blooming profusely all around us. There were lots of skunk cabbage and bluets covering the ground like a wall-to-wall run, with green grass in between. We saw Trilliums that were almost at the end of their blooming time, we found Columbines nestled on the side of a hill among other flower arranged so beautifully no human could make an arrangement so delightful.

Wild Geraniums were abundant as were Spring Beauties with their five petals of dainty pink. We saw Violets of many colors, blue, Lehigh blue, white and yellow, also Dog-tooth Violets. Wood Sorrels came in many colors and species. We saw some pretty yellow ones. We found Buttercups so shiny they looked like they were polished.

Of course, Dandelions were in profusion, pesky in lawns, but beautiful to behold, a few lingering Adders tongues still making the scene. Winter cress was showing up and scattered were a few Bellworts.

I couldn’t help looking in wonder and awe as those Meadowrues with the Japanese lantern-like little dangles arranged so beautifully so as to make us stop and look again and again at the lovely picture they painted. We spotted some Toothwarts among the rocks and tree roots.

As I’m writing about the wonders of God’s creation, I was so much into what I wrote I felt I was there with Evelyn and seeing all these things all over again and thank God for allowing me to keep all these beautiful memories in my mind.

In my notebook I have many pages of days I recorded and dated. My earliest date in my book was March 30, 1965, soon after we moved to our home at the foot of South Mountain.

I hope you enjoy my writings as much as I did telling them.

Beauty is all around us any season of the year. All we have to do is pause and reflect on them and thank God for them every day.

Perhaps God’s most glorious work outside of Creation is to save sinners through the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. The extraordinary wisdom of God’s plan is put on display through the church: Angels are watching (Ephesians 3:10).

One of the earliest phrases a child learns is, “Hey Mom! Watch this!”

Perched on the edge of a pool, wearing a bloated inner tube, the little guy wants to show off some amazing acrobatic. Some guys never grow up. It’s jokingly said a typical man’s last words are, “Hey Hon! Watch this!” as he shows off some stupid stunt. Some crave an audience, while some cringe at the thought. Either way, there is a vast crowd of beings who see us when we’re sleeping, who know when we’re awake, who know when we’ve been bad or good. They’re not a squadron of Santas or an army of aliens (although they are out of this world)—they’re a multitude of messengers called angels. This can make us cringe or feel confident, depending on what we’re doing.

Angels have been God’s audience from the beginning.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Because God does all things for His glory, it behooved Him to have someone to whom He could say, “Watch this!” It appears that God created angels early on, for when the “foundation of the earth” was laid, “the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy” (Job 38:4–7). They witnessed Creation. Angels take an intense interest in us as well. In Daniel 4:13, they are called watchers, meaning “wakeful ones.” They are ever alert to what is going on. They are assigned to keep us in all our ways (Psalm 91:11), and they never sleep on the job. Angels are fascinated by Salvation. Peter tells us the facts of the gospel are “things into which angels long to look” (1 Peter 1:12).

Everyone loves a good party, and angels are no exception. When a person gets saved, “there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:10). Jesus promised, “Everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God” (Luke 12:8). Imagine the Son of God telling Him and the angels about you, and how much joy you can bring to them! Angels pay attention to our Ministration. As we serve the Lord, we are sometimes made to feel like fools (1 Corinthians 4:9). However, the angels view us as fellow ministers (Hebrews 1:14). Paul instructed Pastor Timothy about the election of elders, charging him “in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels” (I Timothy 5:21). Angels observe the character and qualifications of God’s servants. We should not offend them by improper behavior in church (1 Corinthians 11:10).

Because angels have been watching God’s program unfold from the beginning, taking keen interest in every human being for thousands of years, it would be as unfair to shield them from the finale as it would be to tear out the last chapter of a mystery novel. Having witnessed Creation, Salvation, and Ministration, they are fit witnesses to the Culmination at the final judgment. Unbelievers will be “tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels” (Revelation 14:10).

They are also qualified to join the saints and all creatures in praising God and Christ forever (Revelation 5). Like it or not, we have an audience. Does that make you cringe or feel confident?

Its leaves have a unique, peppery sweet tang, adding pizzazz even to the blandest salads. Although arugula provides a flavor impact, it does not have an aftertaste.

This is a multi-ethnic herb that is used in everything from delicate Asian spring rolls to substantial Mexican dishes.

Cilantro is the leaf part of the coriander plant. It’s unique flavor is quite distinctive and can liven up even a simple chicken broth.

Cilantro has a faint overtone of anise and a somewhat delicate peppery taste. Use cilantro in tacos, salsas, soups, stews, chicken and rice, salads, tomato based sauces and as a garnish. Use sparingly.

Originally native to Eastern Europe, this herb now grows abundantly in the US as well.

Grated bottled and creamed horseradish is available, as well as a dried form, which must be reconstituted before using.

This ancient herb (one of the five bitter herbs of the Jewish Passover festival). It is grown mainly for its pungent spicy roots.

It’s most often grated and used in sauces or as a condiment with fish or meat. Mix with sour cream for a tasty sauce for brisket or roast beef or use as a sandwich spread.

Mint is an herb that comes in many varieties such as peppermint, spearmint, apple mint, lemon mint and even chocolate mint.

Mint is used for seasoning lamb, vegetable such as carrots, bell pepper, and tomatoes, in yogurt dressings, and breads.

It is also used in the Middle East for salads, tabouli and marinated vegetables.

Mint is good in soups, salads, sauces, plain meat, fish and poultry, stews, sweet or savory recipes, extremely good with chocolate or lemon based desserts. Add near the end of cooking for a better flavor.
