The letter “S” indicates a secure webpage. Many times there will also be an icon of a closed padlock as well.

There is plenty of good free software out there that will do just fine but most of them will not update automatically. I recommend purchasing and maintaining an internet security system that includes all three of these programs. It is generally well worth the investment.

Now you know the five most common mistakes made by victims of online identity theft. To ensure that you do not become a victim yourself, be very careful about what information you release, only make purchases from secure websites and use long difficult passwords.

Many high-tech cyber criminals develop phishing sites, which are websites made to look like that of a popular financial institution. They then send spam emails out making them look like they were sent from the financial institution.

Also, be very suspicious about strange emails and make sure to keep your computer protection software updated.

Follow the above advice and you will significantly lower your chances of becoming part of the twenty percent.

Our Seniors Are Not Just Budget Numbers

by Pat Nemetch, President APRN, Member, PA State AARP Long Term Care Committee ovember’s arrival signals the end of N daylight savings time, the traditional first blast of cold weather and the unofficial start of

Pennsylvania’s 2.5 million beneficiaries. That’s precisely who will be harmed if Congress approves cuts to Medicare and Social Security.

While I always look forward to the holidays at home, I usually need some time to adjust to the return of colder weather and early sunsets.

Our struggling economy means an increasing number of older adults depend on these modest benefits to pay for basic necessities including rent, food and health care. Currently, half of those aged 65 and older have an annual income of less than $18,500 per year.

This month, action is heating up in our nation’s Capital.

Members of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction (also known as the “supercommittee”) are looking at ways to reduce the federal deficit and are charged with issuing a final report this month.

This “supercommittee,” which includes Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Pat Toomey, is considering proposals that could shift health care costs onto seniors, threaten seniors’ access to their doctors or reduce the Social Security benefits they rely on.

We all know Congress must make tough choices to address our nation’s debt, but treating seniors like budget numbers isn’t the way to get it done. To reduce the number of zeros in the federal budget, Congress should focus on cutting wasteful government spending and closing tax loopholes.

Older adults have spent a lifetime working for Medicare and Social Security benefits, and we need to keep reminding elected officials to stop threatening these crucial benefits.

If Congress really wants to understand how Medicare and Social Security numbers impact older adults, here’s the bottom line. Pennsylvania currently includes more than 2.2 million Medicare recipients, and Social Security provides more than half the household income for 55% of

Today’s Medicare beneficiaries already must pay an average of $3,000 per year out of their own pockets for medical expenses, and their out-of-pocket share is rising every year.

So the members of this “supercommittee” in Washington have a choice. They can harm millions of older Pennsylvanians who have worked their entire lives to earn Medicare and Social Security benefits. Or they can cut wasteful government spending, close tax loopholes and protect the benefits seniors have earned.

We need your help to convince lawmakers in Washington to take Medicare and Social Security benefits off of the table for deficit reduction. Our elected officials must hear from you that older adults aren’t line items in a budget. What’s more, we’re not pushovers either. Call your elected representatives in Washington toll free at 1-888-722-8514 and tell them not to reduce Social Security and Medicare as part of a budget deficit reduction deal.

Social Security: Questions and Answers

by Tom Reiley, District Manager, Allentown PA Question: “I worked for the last 10 years and I now have my 40 credits. Does this mean that I get the maximum Social Security retirement benefit?�

Question: If both my spouse and I are entitled to Social Security benefits, is there any reduction in our payments because we are married?

Answer: The 40 credits are the minimum number you need to qualify for retirement benefits. However, we do not base the amount of the benefit on those credits; it’s based on your earnings over a lifetime of work. For details on how your benefit is figured go to www.socialsecurity.gov/mystatement/ howfigured.htm.

Answer: No. We calculate lifetime earnings independently to determine each spouse’s Social Security benefit amount.

When each member of a married couple meets all other eligibility requirements to receive Social Security retirement benefits, each spouse receives a monthly benefit amount based on his or her own earnings.

Question: How can I estimate my retirement benefit at several different ages?

Couples are not penalized because they are married. If one member of the couple earned low wages or failed to earn enough Social Security credits (40) to be insured for retirement benefits, he or she may be eligible to receive benefits as a spouse based on the spouse’s work record.

Answer: It’s easy! Use our Retirement Estimator at www. socialsecurity.gov/estimator to get a retirement benefit estimate based on current law and real time access to your earnings record. Lower Costs, Additonal Protection in Reverse Mortgage Program

by John Krajsa, President and Owner of AFC Reverse Mortgage, Inc. ositive change continues to P occur in the FHA insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) program.

Improved counseling and lower

costs are just two of the changes that occurred over the past year, making the program more viable for homeowners age 62 and over. Most homeowners use a reverse mortgage as an additional source of retirement income.

A reverse mortgage can replace a conventional mortgage or home equity loan and eliminate mortgage payments. Whether used as additional income, or to eliminate mortgage payments, or both, a reverse mortgage always improves cash flow.

The reverse mortgage counseling program was recently revamped leading to improved counseling. A new FHA protocol was issued that requires a much more involved and lengthier counseling session than was previously required. Training and qualification standards for counselors have also improved. Counseling by an FHA approved reverse mortgage counselor is required before a lender can proceed with the loan and it is a major consumer protection in the FHA program.

Lower costs are found in the new HECM Saver program (which celebrated its first birthday on October 1). The Saver is HUD’s answer to the request by some for a HECM loan with lower closing costs.

It is a great alternative for those who do not need the full amount available in a traditional HECM, or who are looking to borrow a smaller amount or for a shorter term.

Finally a recent article in Reverse Mortgage Daily suggests that new research soon to be released supports the use of the HECM Saver in financial planning. The HECM Saver has substantially lower closing costs than the traditional program and so may be a suitable substitute for a home equity loan as a financial planning tool.

The HECM Saver is estimated to have taken over as much as twenty percent of the reverse mortgage market. The Saver lowers closing costs in exchange for a loan amount somewhat smaller than would otherwise be available. HUD is in effect eliminating the up front FHA insurance premium in exchange for a smaller loan amount.

We suspect that the fact that monthly mortgage payments are not required, but that payments can be made at any time without penalty, may provide flexibility for planners not found in traditional home equity loans. Also, since there are no monthly mortgage payments, no proof of income is needed to qualify.

Castles in the Sand

I had a brief conversation with an old friend recently.

These days, the friends seem older and the conversations more brief! We were remarking on the shipwrecked economy, the floundering job market, and the fishy political scene:

Jesus knew that internal and external storms would come, so he warned us that the only safe shelter is faith in, and obedience to, his words. Faith and obedience are one and the same.

Friend: “How do people without faith deal with all the uncertainty?”

Me: “Quick answer: Alcohol, drugs, sex, worry, denial, violence, you name it. Or they manufacture their own faith.”

Friend: “And overeating.”

Who hasn’t built sand castles on the beach, only to have them erode by water, wind, or a boot from a beach bully?

Not too many piers are built on the sand; they are anchored on rock to withstand the relentless power of wind and wave.

Fortresses and anchor points don’t hold very well when built on sand. Neither do people.

Most people fall into at least one of those traps, even people of “faith.” In reality, all those options require faith in times of trouble and doubt. We turn to that which we trust will provide us with, if not stability, at least temporary distraction from reality or brief numbness to pain.

After the foam on the beer fizzles, the spark of an illicit romance turns to ashes, worry runs out of wrinkles, and human philosophies fail to answer questions, the Word of God stands forever (Isaiah 40:8). God is no sand castle: “I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.’” (Psalm 91:2). Stand on the Rock of Ages when the stormy weather rages!

The Lehigh Valley has weathered a lot of storms lately.

We’ve experienced an earthquake, hurricane, record-breaking rain, floods, financial failures, and a myriad of miseries both public and private. There is very little that is under our individual control. We can’t catch the wind in our fists, wish away cancer, print our own money, or personally fire the politicians we don’t like. We can, however, choose whom or what we believe will help us through our difficulties.

Have you ever stood on the beach, with the waves lapping around your toes? Remember that feeling of awkwardness as the water receded, pulling the sand from under your feet? At my age, I feel like that all the time.

But I digress. Have you ever stood on a rock under the same circumstances? Your feet were rock-steady, even as the water surrounded them and tried to pull them out to sea. The difference was neither the water nor the feet—the difference was where you chose to stand.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught how to live a rock-solid life of discipleship. Among other subjects, he touched on prayer and anxiety. He finished his instruction with this: “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it (Matthew 7:24–27).

s a mature citizen, you probably have noticed that along with a few more grey hairs, your eyes are changing. You need more light to enjoy your favorite indoor hobbies. The glare of car headlights bothers you more. Your eye doctor has already prescribed bifocals so you can read small print more easily. Such changes are a natural part of aging and create no cause for alarm.

Many seniors, however, also experience more serious concerns often caused by the four age-related eye diseasesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, or diabetic retinopathy. A

round the time I turned fifty I started feeling somewhat discontented about my life.

I had an excellent job that supported me well, but I had lost my passion. My mother died of breast cancer a few years before and my only child left for college. I was still single after being divorced at age 37.

I guess I was no different than many others at midlife who start reflecting on what it is they really want for the rest of their lives. I woke up on the other side of fifty to the realization that I had not achieved many of my dreams.

it is time to make the most of each day we still have. Often fear holds us back. But, life often forces change upon us and we must face our fears and take a risk. That is exactly what happened to me.

The good news is that going through this made me realize My push into following my dream was given to me in how precious and short life can be. We don’t get forever to do the form of an early retirement from my job. I used that the things we want to do and there comes a moment when experience to start my own business doing something that I love. In fact, my business focuses on helping those at midlife and beyond find and follow their dreams. How great it is to use my own experience to help others going through similar things. It is scary and exciting at the same time.

The landscape after midlife looks very different from the way it did when we were young. That doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of time to live the life we know we were meant to live.
