FROM THE EDITOR Well, September is here and the children and grandchildren are back in school. The weather is still quite pleasant so this might be a good time to sneak away for a weekend or a day trip. To that end, we have some interesting adventures in our “Things To Do in the Valley� section. Take a look and treat yourself to well-deserved fun.

Inside we have a section on nursing home care facilities to help you with your loved ones when the need arises. Included is a listing with a cross section of the Valley’s providers.

Visit the Philadelphia Insectarium. This insect museum (read “bug zoo”) is definitely on the creepy crawly side. Kids can play on a man-made spider web, watch a working beehive (safely behind glass), check out the glow-in-the-dark scorpions, even hold and touch a few bugs (with help from a tour guide). Make autumn placemats. Collect colorful fallen leaves of different size and shape. Arrange them in attractive but varying patterns. Press between sheets of wax paper and steam it closed with a warm (not hot) iron. Trim each placement with colorful strips of construction paper or discount fabric with a fall pattern. Place on the kitchen or dining room table for seasonal flair.

Make a bowling game. Save detergent bottles, rinse out, half fill with sand, and glue the lids on. Arrange at the end of a hallway and you have a bowling alley.

illions of adults will be discharged from hospitals this year requiring skilled nursing and rehabilitation before returning home.

They face a critical decision as to which team of doctors, therapists, nurses and social workers they will trust to help them recover.

“Our patients are coming to us younger and sicker and expect to recover quicker and return home,” Michele Ozgar, Regional Rehabilitation Manager said. “Our rehabilitation gyms are bustling with activity daily, with patients working on regaining strength, stamina and the skills they need to return home.”

Each day, HCR ManorCare treats patients with hospital-level acuity and medically complex conditions transitioning from hospital to home.

hen couples start thinking about retirement, they need to have “the talk.” With Baby Boomers living 20 to 30 years in retirement, it’s important for couples to talk about how they want to spend those years. In their new book, The Couples Retirement Puzzle: 10 Must-Have Conversations for Transitioning to the Second Half of Life, Roberta K. Taylor and Dorian Mintzer offer 10 topics couples should discuss.

1. What’s our retirement timetable?

There are many options -- retiring together or separately, phasing out and working part time, having an encore career, volunteering, taking care of grandchildren or an elderly relative.

With work there was a built-in structure of time together and apart. Once work roles shift, couples do best when they clarify expectations and discuss what their shared interests are and what interests they want to pursue separately.

With their bonus years, many want to do something from the heart after spending years focused on achieving and earning an income.

5. How can we nurture our emotional and sexual relationship?

We all need and want love and intimacy. Many older couples talk about renewed intimacy without the pressure of work and children.

6. What are our responsibilities and obligations to our family?

You may have adult children, grandchildren, aging parents, or children from previous relationships. It can be challenging if you have multiple emotional, financial and care-taking responsibilities. Discuss what’s important and find ways to compromise.

The Stakes Are High for Medication Mistakes

Eventually, as the number of medications grows, and the regimen becomes more complex or their level of cognitive function declines, they may begin to need help from caregivers – whether it’s you or a professional healthcare provider. The last step is the person needing complete support to manage medications in a supportive living situation.

he cost of people failing to take medication as prescribed by their doctors has a huge impact on our society.

The National Pharmaceutical Council estimates that non-adherence to medication regimens costs more than $100 billion a year. The costs are due to increased admissions to hospitals and nursing homes and increased emergency room and physician visits. For the elderly, approximately 1 in 10 hospital admissions are due to misuse of medications and 40% of nursing home admissions are associated with nonadherence.

Sticking with one pharmacy that has a complete list of one’s medications and medical history is very beneficial. A pharmacist can help prevent any serious side effects that may result from adding or changing medications. Caregivers may also consider getting a medication dispensing service, like the one offered by the American Red Cross, to help loved ones with taking the right medications at the right time.

For adult children of older parents, there are a number of medication risk factors that you should know about to keep your loved ones safe: •

Accidental overdosing. There are many reasons for an older parent to take more medication than prescribed.

Some are unintentional like confusion or forgetfulness, sometimes it’s intentional and sometimes it’s due to gaps in the health care system.

Going from one care setting to another is a vulnerable time. A parent may be taking a generic medication at home and be given the same medication with the brand name in the hospital. He or she doesn’t realize it’s the same medication and they take both. When your loved one is discharged from a skilled rehabilitation facility back to their home, it’s imperative that medications are reconciled. Check with the nurse or doctor.

Under dosing occurs when medications are taken sporadically or doses are missed for various reasons.

•

Inappropriate use of medication. Taking a medication that belongs to someone else in the household, like a spouse’s meds, or taking outdated medication can have adverse effects.

Drive To End Hunger - a New Initiative

L

abor Day has come and gone, signaling an end to the dog days of summer. Somehow, our vacations are just a memory and school is already back in session.

For me, September’s arrival is welcome--the weather cools down and trees change color, adding bursts of bright red, orange and yellow to the skyline. Of course, those same leaves can be dangerous for older adults, increasing the risks of falls and pulled muscles when raking, cleaning or putting the last summer items away for the year.

For many families, sharing chores often ends with the celebration of a meal together. Food is the American way to celebrate family, friends and love. With the challenges of our nation’s economy, food has become a luxury for both young and old. That’s why this year, AARP and the AARP Foundation have partnered with NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon for the Drive to End Hunger.

Every day, more than 6 million older people face the threat of hunger, forced to skip meals or subsist on inexpensive, poor quality food with little nutritional value.

It’s hard to recognize someone who hasn’t eaten for a day, especially if that person — like a great many seniors — is too proud or too embarrassed to tell anyone.

The bottom line is Drive to End Hunger is committed to helping making a difference in the community. Here in the Lehigh Valley, AARP is working with Second Harvest Food Bank, which does an outstanding job distributing 5.1 million pounds of food and grocery products serving more than 63,000 individuals in a six county area.

So whether you have five minutes or five hours to volunteer, or $5 or $5,000 to donate, you can help an older person in our community eat today. For every $1 donated to the food bank, Second Harvest is able to distribute nine pounds of food which is equivalent to seven meals.

You can also get involved at DrivetoEndHunger.org. and find local food pantries and soup kitchens you can support.

Or maybe you’ll want to get together with some friends and start a food drive on your own.

In the meantime, take time to enjoy the fall colors and don’t overdo the outdoor chores.

Most hungry older adults never imagined not having enough to buy groceries, but their circumstances changed: they lost their job, their retirement investments, their spouses or partners.

Never underestimate the power of a single person.

Today we need to help feed people who are hungry. But the real answer lies in preventing people from becoming hungry in the first place.

AARP — a stronger voice for change

The Drive to End Hunger is about more than making people aware of the issue. The real goal is to feed hungry older Americans through food drives; generate resources for the cause through individual and corporate fundraising campaigns and boost enrollment efforts in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP (formerly known as the food stamp program).

Join us in making a difference in Pennsylvania through advocacy, education and community service.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to help the community and gain a sense of personal enrichment.

The SNAP program is becoming increasingly important because between 2006 and 2008, the percentage of people age 60+ in the U.S. facing hunger more than doubled. Yet in Pennsylvania, just 34 percent of SNAP eligible people 60+ receive help. So if you know someone who is having trouble feeding their family, encourage them to apply for SNAP by contacting their local area agency on aging or state welfare office.

Work Training Program For Adults 55+

T

he AARP Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is a work-training program that has provided over 30 years of continuous service in communities across the country.

The Senior Community Service Employment Program is a work training program funded by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Enrollees accept temporary, part-time, paid assignments with nonprofit community organizations to develop job skills while continuing to pursue a permanent, unsubsidized job.

The program is funded by a grant under Title V of the Older Americans Act of 1965 to provide job training and new skills to eligible individuals (those at least age 55 with incomes less than 125% of poverty).

Three Strikes and You’re . . . Still In!

I

don’t know a lot about baseball, but I know from bitter experience that a batter is out after three strikes. Miss the ball three times and your turn is over.

My wife planted the rose the first year we moved in, so it’s very precious to us. She nurtured and trained it—teaching me what aphids and Japanese beetles are— and it added great beauty to our garden and life.

I am, by nature, a quitter. It doesn’t take a lot of humiliation or bruises to make me walk away from a difficult situation.

A couple years ago, it broke in a storm. Lynda trimmed it down to nothing, and it looked pretty bad.

Many years ago, a dear friend told me I give up too easily. He was right, and that observation haunts me when I’m tempted to quit something I know I can do.

The next year, it started to grow again, but another wind broke it down. I propped it up but down it went again. There was nothing left but a dead stump.

A more recent friend and supervisor likened me to a bulldog, who will go after something until I get it. Perhaps I’ve learned my lesson. Better yet, I hear the words of another friend whom I haven’t met yet: The apostle Paul, who said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

We would not give up: I prayed, she fertilized. We saw no signs of life—no potential for beauty—but we did what we could. This year, there is a fresh but fragile new shoot where it seemed the bush was shot.

Out of the dozens of plants and trees in our yard, two stand out as notable to me. One is a rosebush, the other a catalpa tree. Roses are the exemplars of elegance in the world of flowers, while catalpas are judged as junk trees. There are people that the world would classify as one extreme or the other.

The catalpa was there when we moved in 20 years ago. I like it because we had one near my boyhood home, and I loved the little “bananas” that it produces. I’ve come to appreciate the delicate white flowers that look like popcorn and flutter to the ground like snowflakes. They do make a mess, however—hence the “junk” characterization.

During a recent sewer line problem, the workers cut away a significant part of the catalpa’s roots. One landscape company told us to cut down the tree because it was hopeless.

We found another crew that recommended fertilizer, thereby saving and strengthening the tree. It is alive and flourishing today, and we enjoy it’s breadth and beauty.

The rosebush appeared dead and ugly. One is considered garbage, the other glorious.

It seems society wants to let the broken and unlovely die. God, however, likes to fix the broken and give new life to the dead. Out of His great love for us, He often lets us stay at bat after three strikes. Although we may have no strength, we can do more than we think, through Christ who strengthens us.

Never give up on those whose lives are broken, whose spiritual lives are fruitless, even if you are one of them. When someone suggests that you can do great things for God and you think, “That ship has sailed—and sunk,” maybe that little bit of life in you needs some heavenly humus. Perhaps, you can strengthen the things that remain in others—and yourself (Hebrews 12:12).

Nursing Home Facilities: Top 10 Myths

Myth #1: Nursing home facilities smell bad.

Reality: Most good nursing home facilities rarely smell bad, and when they do, chances are, it will be taken care of promptly. Not only are nursing home facilities inspected by each state on behalf of the Medicare administration every twelve to fifteen months, but they are also inspected by family members and other health professionals, albeit more informally, on a regular basis. So while you may encounter an unpleasant odor on one visit, it’s likely you may never experience it on subsequent visits. If you do, take it up with the administrator. Nursing home administrators are typically very sensitive to this issue and will take action quickly.

Myth #2: Nursing home facilities are like hospitals.

Reality: Nursing homes are residential facilities that provide medical care, but they are not like hospitals.

The environment in nursing home facilities is much less clinical, for one thing. In addition, community living has a much different feel than a temporary stay in a hospital.

Nursing homes offer activities to keep residents engaged in the community, and interacting with one another. And as neighbors, residents often form lasting friendships.

Myth #3: The people who live in nursing home facilities are all dying.

Reality: Nursing homes provide continuous medical care for people whose medical conditions require around-the-clock care or monitoring. While it is true that some elderly and terminally ill residents may be dying, at that point they are certified by their doctor to receive hospice (i.e., end-of-life) care, and that is certainly not the case for all residents. Many nursing home residents simply need a higher level of care than is available at an assisted living facility.

Myth #4: All nursing homes are the same.

Reality: This couldn’t be further from the truth. It is important to carefully research the nursing homes you are considering, because despite stringent federal regulation, all nursing homes are different. This can be a wonderful thingfor example, when it creates a strong sense of community among residents - but it can also have a down side, especially when a facility does not address problems that affect residents’ quality of life and / or quality of care.

Myth #6: Insurance will pay for my nursing home care.

Reality: It depends on the type of coverage you have.

Many people are surprised to learn that Medicare only pays for 100 days of nursing home care per illness, and prior to that, you must meet a number of requirements before you are eligible for benefits. Also, only the first 20 days are covered in full; the rest requires a significant co-payment ($133.50 per day in 2009). After that point, you are responsible for paying for expenses out of pocket until you become eligible for Medicaid. Some long-term care insurance policies provide coverage in a nursing home facility, but not all. If you have a long-term care insurance policy that provides nursing home coverage, check your policy to determine your coverage limits and restrictions.

Myth #7: There is no privacy in a nursing home facility.

Reality: It’s true that there is typically less privacy in a nursing home facility than in other types of senior housing.

Most rooms are shared by two residents, and caregivers may enter the room as needed - visitors. However, nursing homes are required to maintain a private area for visits with family, and most facilities try to respect residents’ privacy as much as possible. Residents have the right to privacy, and to keep personal belongings and property as long as they don’t interfere with the rights, health or safety of others.

Myth #8: Nursing home residents have limited rights.

Reality: Nursing home residents retain all of their legal rights once they move in. In addition, Medicare has established a Nursing Home Residents’ Bill of Rights that clearly defines residents’ rights pertaining to: respect, services and fees, money, privacy and medical care.

Myth #9: A move to a nursing home facility is a permanent move.

Reality: Most nursing homes have wings for both longterm care and short-term care. The long-term care wing is for residents, while the short-term care wing houses people who
