The 27th annual Holiday Marketplace Fine Art and Craft Show will take place November 5 to 6 at the Swain School in Allentown, PA. The show features more than 40 local artisans associated with the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen (LVPGC) along with selected others, each offering handmade high quality art and fine craft that is made within the greater Lehigh Valley area. Artisans will be on hand to discuss their work as they offer jewelry, pottery, woodcraft, photography and a variety of art for sale. How Fixing Cataracts Can Improve Your Health

emember the old song; the foot bone’s connected to the leg bone? Well here’s an interesting connection—better vision could lead to a 16 percent lower risk of hip fractures.

Sure, fixing cataracts can restore clear, colorful vision, but according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, having cataract surgery lowers the risk of breaking a hip as well in adults 65 and older.

How could cataract surgery affect hip fractures? “Seeing helps you navigate a new environment and helps with balance,” lead investigator Dr. Anne L. Coleman of Brown University told the New York Times. “You really need your eyes and vision to help you stay stable.”

Cataract surgery has come a very long way over the last 50 years. What was once a complicated surgery with a two week hospital stay is now a simple outpatient procedure that takes a few minutes. “Cataract removal has a very high success rate.

Most people can return to normal routines within 24 hours,” says Dr. Mackool. About 3 million people have cataracts removed in the U.S. each year, making it one of the most common procedures. The eye’s cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens. Traditional lenses can correct distance vision, but newer advanced technology lenses can also help correct pre-existing eye conditions like astigmatism and age-related presbyopia. These newer intraocular lenses can potentially eliminate the need for glasses.

It’s important to know that medications, eye drops, exercises, and eating healthy can’t reverse cataracts. The only effective way to correct a cataract is to remove the clouded lens with minor surgery. It becomes a matter of “when” rather than “if ” you should have the procedure done. To make sure you are protecting your eye health, follow these few simple steps.

• Everyone 50 or older should get yearly comprehensive eye exams. This allows for detection of eye diseases in early stages, before you experience vision problems, some of which may be permanent.

In early stages, symptoms may not hold you back, but vision may worsen as the cataract grows. It’s important to get examined as soon as you notice changes in vision, even if they seem minor. In later stages, you may experience poor night vision, colors looking dull, difficulty with glares or halos, and double vision.

October has come and gone, and Halloween is just a sweet memory until next year. That means winter is around the corner, and all the almanacs - if you believe in that sort of thing - are predicting colder temperatures and lots of snow.

November is a month with much meaning for me. In many households, Thanksgiving celebrates family, food and football.

Of course, November also signals the traditional kick-off of the holiday season.

But don’t overlook the real meaning of Thanksgiving. I encourage you to take the time to be thankful for things we sometimes take for granted, like health, home and family.

While I will be counting my blessings this month, especially that I am so fortunate to still have both parents, I am also thankful to AARP and its founder Dr.. Ethel Percy Andrus.

Non-Dairy Sources of Calcium

They say you can’t squeeze blood from a turnip but can you squeeze calcium from kale? Calcium is an important part of every healthy diet. It plays an essential role in bone density, muscle contraction, nerve function, blood pressure stability, and healing.

Today, a large percentage of people look to dairy as their primary source of calcium to meet their daily needs. Are there other and perhaps better options for those who are seeking non-dairy sources of calcium? Is it possible to meet your daily needs without dairy?

Currently, the RDA for calcium ranges from 800mg to 1200mg per day depending on age and sex. If dairy is the standard for calcium, one cup of milk, for example, contains 300mg of calcium. Now, compare this to some whole food sources of calcium per serving based on USDA research; tofu 350mg, tapioca 300mg, Chia seeds 300mg/1.5 ounces, collard greens 210mg, kale 205mg, cooked bok choy 190mg, figs 135mg/5 figs, white beans 120mg, cooked turnip greens 104mg, cooked spinach 99mg, almonds 93mg, sesame seeds 51mg/tablespoon and dried herbs 21mg/1gram.

This is just a short list of a large number of plant based whole foods that contain calcium. Perusing the list, it is easy to see that consuming a predominantly plant-based diet of whole foods would easily meet the RDA guidelines for daily calcium intake.

Consuming more calcium is not the only answer to build stronger bones. A Yale study that analyzed 34 studies published studies from 16 countries and found that the countries that consumed the highest levels of dairy and animal based products had the highest levels of osteoporosis.

Additionally they found that South Africans daily calcium intake was 196mg and yet they were 9 times less likely to suffer hip fractures than their American counterparts.

This study highlights the fact that other factors (i.e. high sugar, protein intakes, medications, sedentary lifestyle) and the all important aspects of calcium metabolism including absorption, assimilation, and excretion work in concert to maintain strong bones and a healthy body. Consuming more calcium does not directly correlate with stronger bones and may in fact be harmful.

Once calcium enters your mouth it begins a journey that may or may not lead to your bones. Reaching the stomach, calcium begins to be absorbed into the blood stream aided by stomach acid. But not all of the calcium in food is absorbed.

When 1 cup of milk is consumed, approximately 32% of the calcium is absorbed.

Compare this to the calcium absorption from leafy green vegetables, such as bok choy, that produce a 40-70% absorption rate.

Applying a little math we see that approximately 96 mg of calcium is absorbed from one cup of milk compared to 132mg of calcium from 1 cup of bok choy. Almonds follow closely behind milk at 21% and beans average a 17% absorption rate. Spinach, because of higher oxalate levels, trails the group at 5%. Vitamin D is also a critical component in calcium absorption and levels should be checked and corrected to normal if necessary.

One of the most important additional benefits of whole food sources of calcium is that they supply minerals and micronutrients that aid in the assimilation of calcium into the bones. Minerals such as manganese, boron, zinc, copper, strontium and magnesium are found in these whole foods and are critical components of calcium metabolism and bone health. Without these micronutrients calcium assimilation into bone is limited. Eating a variety of these non-dairy sources of calcium helps to ensure an adequate supply of these vital minerals.

The final aspect of calcium metabolism that has been largely ignored is the excretion or losses of calcium that occur on a daily basis. Excessive dietary protein, and sodium can increase calcium losses in the urine. Also, medications such as antacid medications containing aluminum have been shown to increase calcium excretion. Consuming the average American diet, and meeting calcium goals, may leave you with an inadequate calcium balance due to losses from excessive protein and sodium intakes.

Whole foods are packed with calcium and a wide variety of minerals that help promote a healthy body and bones.

Consider adding some of these non-dairy foods to your diet today and watch your health and bones improve: legumes and beans can add a healthy dose of calcium to a chili or stew, tofu, figs, kale and other greens added to soups or salads, broccoli, seaweed ¼ cup, 1 oz of almonds/sunflower seeds sprinkled on a salad, almond butter, sesame seeds, salmon, carrot juice, hummus and quinoa.

Hello, Stranger!

Who does this remind you of: Funny hats, turkeys, and rifles? If you said, “A redneck birthday party,” you are funny but wrong. With Thanksgiving in view, you probably thought of the Pilgrims. Maybe, you had the honor of being in the first grade Thanksgiving pageant, playing Governor Bradford, John Alden (or Priscilla), Miles Standish or even Squanto.

The Pilgrims are a quaint relic of American history, their legacy relegated to inflatable lawn ornaments and accordion table decorations. However, there are still pilgrims today— and you may be one!

Believers in Jesus Christ are heirs of the same promise given to Abraham: “And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise” (Galatians 3:29). All who follow Christ are modern-day pilgrims on a pilgrimage. We are strangers in a strange land, seeking a better place, where we can freely worship God: “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away’” (Revelation 21:3–5).

In 1517, the Reformation called for changes in the European church. By the time you read this, we will have celebrated its anniversary on October 31. Out of that movement came many splinter groups. One English group, the Puritans, didn’t believe the Reformed church was pure enough, so they moved to Holland. Despite their acceptance in Holland, they missed their English culture and customs.

We are Puritans, seeking purity of life and worship— strangers to the world (2 Peter 4:3, 4). Thus, we sing: This world is not my home, I’m just a passing through; My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue.

The angels beckon me from heaven’s open door, And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore (Jim Reeves).

The English were colonizing the New World, which they named Virginia. The idea of starting a new life in a new world appealed to these Pilgrims; so, in 1620, the Mayflower set sail.

This Thanksgiving—and every day—give thanks for the salvation and reign of our pilgrim leader, Jesus (Revelation 11:15)!

A pilgrim is someone who journeys in a foreign land.

A pilgrimage is a trip to a particular location, usually for religious purposes. The Pilgrims certainly fulfilled both definitions: They traveled to strange lands to find religious freedom for themselves. They became strangers and sojourners on the earth.

The Pilgrim concept didn’t die out with that little band of Puritans with funny hats; it continues today with all who follow God. About 4,000 years ago, God told Abraham to emigrate from his home in Haran to a strange land that would become his new home (Genesis 12). He left everyone and everything to follow God to Canaan. Two generations later, grandson Jacob (Israel, Genesis 32:28) was asked his age by Pharaoh of Egypt. “And Jacob said to Pharaoh, ‘The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage’” (Genesis 47:9).

Speaking of Abraham, Hebrews informs us, “By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God” (vv. 9, 10). God promised a new home for these men—and all who follow God after them—therefore, they admitted their time in this world was a pilgrimage.

Support Group Helps People Cope With Vision Loss

Huetter, Development Director, Center for Vision Loss f you are affected by any of the age-related I eye diseases--macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts or diabetic retinopathy-there may come a time when your eye care professional tells you that he can no longer correct your vision.

Your reaction is sure to be very emotional including anger and frustration that could lead to feelings of a loss of empowerment and self-worth, isolation or even depression.

If these feelings become overwhelming, the Center for Vision Loss invites you to join an adjustment to blindness support group. It may be just the motivation you need to begin to enjoy life again.

James Van Horn, Sr., MS, MA, NOMC, facilitates the agency’s support groups. Because James is legally blind, he has faced the struggles of vision loss on a daily basis and can respond to the group’s needs in an effective, empathetic and genuine way. James notes that his main focus is to help a person accept their blindness so that they move forward on the road to independence. Members provide emotional support for each other; share information, coping skills, ideas and safety tips to help with everyday life and learn how to deal with other people’s attitudes and misconceptions about blindness.

James also notes that continued support group involvement can change a person’s hopelessness on becoming blind to a sense of fulfillment and enjoyment of life. Members form deep and lasting relationships because the group has enabled a member to share innermost feelings with others who have similar visual impairments and can relate to their situations. Group attendance also encourages individuals to learn, admire and emulate what other visually impaired individuals have accomplished.

The Center for Vision Loss offers two adjustment to blindness support groups. Meetings are held the first Thursday of each month, 10-11:30 am, in the Allentown office, 845 West Wyoming Street, Allentown, PA, 18103 (610-433-6018). In Monroe County meetings are held the first Monday of each month, 10-11:30 am at 4215 Manor Drive, Stroudsburg, 18360 (570-992-7787).

Family members or friends are encouraged to join the group if they desire. If a member is also a Center for Vision Loss customer, the agency provides escorted transportation to the meeting. The Center for Vision Loss is the region’s only community benefit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with vision loss.

Flu Shots at the Senior Centers Maxim Healthcare will administer the annual flu inoculations at your senior center. Please bring your Medicare card with Part B or Medicare HMO coverage with you the day of the inoculations. Seniors with Access cards must go to their Primary Physician to obtain their flu shot.

If you do not have Medicare Part B, there will be a $30.00 charge due at the time of the inoculation. You will be asked to sign a release stating that you do not have any allergies to the flu shot. Pneumonia shots are available with Medicare Part B or Medicare HMO’s. Without this coverage the cost will be $75.00.

Lehigh Center for Clinical Research: Pioneers in Alzheimer’s Research

Alzheimer’s worsens over time. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and degenerative disease of the brain. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer’s, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Those with Alzheimer’s live an average of eight years after their symptoms become noticeable to others, but survival can range from four to 20 years, depending on age and other health conditions.

Making strides in Alzheimer’s research. Today, there is a worldwide effort under way to find better ways to treat the disease, delay the onset, and prevent it from developing.

Lehigh Center for Clinical Research is a part of that process.

Right now, Dr. Gross and Lehigh Center for Clinical Research is working with top drug companies in developing new and promising treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. We are working to make cutting edge treatments available to improve the quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s. At LCCR we know the devastating and widespread effects of the disease.

That’s why we conduct this research. To help find better treatments.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s. Just like our bodies, our brains change as we age. Most of us at some point will notice some slowed thinking and occasional problems with remembering certain things. However, serious memory loss, confusion and other major changes in the way our minds work may be a sign that brain cells are failing.

The most common early symptom of Alzheimer’s is difficulty remembering newly learned information because Alzheimer’s changes typically begin in the part of the brain that affects learning. As Alzheimer’s advances through the brain it leads to increasingly severe symptoms, including disorientation, mood and behavior changes; deepening confusion about events, time and place; unfounded suspicions about family, friends and professional caregivers; more serious memory loss and behavior changes; and difficulty speaking, swallowing and walking.

Right now LCCR is enrolling patients in a clinical trial for mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease.

As part of the evaluation, there is a home visit, medical assessment, psychological screening for Alzheimer’s disease, a follow-up family conference, counseling and referrals, if necessary.

Grogan says that many people are concerned about keeping a sharp mind so the Center performs a comprehensive assessment including: memory assessment, depression screening, a cognitive and neurological exam and even look at a patient’s history.

Also a nurse practitioner and social worker do a home visit, perform a home safety check, review any of the patient’s medications, and interview family members. The results of these tests are organized and integrated in to a care plan for the patient.

The Alzheimer’s or Other Dementias CARE; Changing Aging through Research and Education™ Training Program offers a personal approach to help families care for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease at home, where 60 to 70 percent live, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. “Until there is a cure, we offer an interim solution,” said Kimberly Koze D’Amico, MSGC, owner of the local Home Instead Senior Care office.

The foundation of the Alzheimer’s CARE Training Program is an approach called “Capturing Life’s Journey “ that involves gathering stories and experiences about the senior to help caregivers provide comfort while honoring the individual’s past. Because people with Alzheimer’s disease have difficulty with short-term memory, the Capturing Life’s Journey approach taps into long-term memory. The Home Instead Senior Care network assembled the top experts in Alzheimer’s disease to develop the CARE approach. “The training we’re offering to families is the same kind of training our professional CAREGiversSM receive,” Kimberly noted.

The program for family caregivers consists of four classes: Alzheimer’s Disease or Other Dementias Overview; Capturing Life’s Journey; Techniques to Manage Behaviors; and Activities to Encourage Engagement.

“CARE is a wonderful hands-on approach that helps caregivers deal with the behavioral changes that too often accompany these disorders - one of the biggest stressors for caregivers,” said Dr. Jane F. Potter, chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. “There was previously no good program available using adult education techniques to provide handson practice in learning how best to help people who suffer from dementia. This is huge,” she added. “The preferred environment for those with dementia is generally at home,”
