From the Editor The night before this issue went to press my neighborhood had a power outage that lasted about an hour. I was working on the issue and had, fortunately, saved my work just before went the electricity went out. I also do regular backups of my work to protect against this type of problem. My point is that planning and looking ahead is an important part of our lives.

To that end we have two articles that help in this area.

We have an article on creating a smart end of life plan.

Although a difficult subject, it is nonetheless important that we have our own plans and those of our family, particularly our older members. If you are reaching retirement age (65) next year you should consult our list of offices where you can enroll for Medicare Part D. Our featured article this month is “Day Care for Adults”. In it we explain the services provided by adult day care services along with a grid of the facilities in the Lehigh Valley.

In November we go to the polls to vote for president.

My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, ‘Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?’ I mentally polished my halo and I said, ‘No, how are we alike?” You’re both old,’ he replied.

When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, ‘I’m not sure.’ ‘Look in your underwear, Grandpa,’ he advised, ‘mine says I’m 4 to 6.’

A grandfather was delivering his grandchildren to their home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog’s duties. ‘They use him to keep crowds back,’ said one child. ‘No,’ said another.

‘He’s just for good luck.’ A third child brought the argument to a close. ‘They use the dogs,’ she said firmly, ‘to find the fire hydrants.’

A 6 year old was asked where his Grandma lived. “Oh,” he said, “she lives at the airport, when we want her, we just go and get her. Then when we’re done having her, we take her back to the airport.”

Grandpa is the smartest man on earth. He teaches me good things, but I don’t get to see him enough to get as smart as him.

Balancing Work and Caring Betsy Ross in the Valley

What do gymnasts, clowns, and accountants agree on? Balance; its vital for everyone. Depending on the situation balance can be difficult to achieve and falling short of equilibrium can lead to burnout, depression, and other problems.

Not every balancing act comes with a simple little handbook, although every now and then one pops up to help us navigate the road of life, especially the sharp, scary turns. “Elder Care: A Six Step Guide to Balance Work & Family� is now here and made available to us by John Paul Marosy, a distinguished author, executive and aging specialist. “I had worked as an administrator in home care and elder care for fifteen years prior to my father informing our family that he had prostate cancer, but nothing in my professional experience had prepared me for the emotional roller coaster ride of eldercare,� says Marosy.

For two years, he learned first hand what it was like to balance work with managing his father’s care and although Marosy knew where to go, who to see and what to ask, it was still a very challenging process. Ultimately, Marosy says, “we succeeded.� He dedicates his book to hospice care professionals and volunteers everywhere. Marosy encourages readers in his preface: “You can do it, too. I recently spent some time with Betsy Ross (her real name).

She is 92 years old and, yes, she makes U.S. flags. I wanted to speak with Betsy because at 92 she seems to keep a very active lifestyle. In addition to having sewn flags of all sizes she also knits and needlepoints small flags that she gives to deserving people.

As I sat with her and her daughter, Jean she showed me her scrapbook of photos and newspaper clips of her flag activities. She had letters from presidents (Reagan) and even Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of England. She has taken part in many patriotic events here in the Valley and in other parts of the country.

Betsy is a native of the Valley and has lived here all her life.

When I asked if she was related to “the� Betsy Ross she said that they can trace back to her on one side of her family and on the other side they have traced it back to Plymouth Rock!

Betsy has a remarkable memory. She recounted stories of her family life from when she was in grade school on to the present day. In fact she is attending a reunion at her grade school, Ritter, on November 3 , 2012 at Fullertown Fire Co. Whitehall. She invited all former students of any year to join her (for info: ritterreunion@yahoo.com).

After a most pleasant two hours I must say I felt I had lived a bit of history and got to know a most remarkable woman. It is not often that you get to experience a bit of Americana: Betsy Ross – flag maker from the Lehigh Valley.

Getting Your Affairs in Order: 10 Steps for Creating a Smart End-of-Life Plan provided by Hunsicker Funeral Home

End-of-life planning sounds like something you do, well, towards the end of your life. But the reality is, no one knows what tomorrow will bring. If the worst were to happen, you wouldn’t want your family to be burdened with financial, legal and logistical problems. It’s easier than you think to create a smart end-of-life plan. These 10 steps will help you get your affairs in order, and provide you with the peace of mind of knowing that your wishes are clear and that your loved ones will be taken care of.

1. Have a will and update it periodically. The will designates, executors, guardians and trustees. Your executor’s first task is to locate your will, and you can help by keeping the original in a fairly obvious place. A good start is to put your will in an envelope on which you have typed your name and the word ‘”Will.” You should then place the envelope in a fireproof metal box, file cabinet or home safe. An alternative is to put it in a safe deposit box.

2. Have a health care directive (living will). A living will is a medical directive written in advance that sets forth your preference for treatment in the event of your inability to direct care. The document may include when the directive should he initiated and who has the decision-making responsibility to withdraw or withhold treatment.

3. Have a power of attorney. You should name your spouse or a close friend or relative to have power of attorney for you. Whoever you designate will be authorized to manage your affairs, typically financial ones, if you’re not able to handle them yourself. . Have life insurance. Purchase adequate life insurance for yourself now to help your family avoid financial pitfalls later. Having the right amount of coverage will help ensure that the dreams you have for your family will he realized even if you’re not there to witness them.

Determining how much life insurance to buy can be

complicated, so it’s important to seek assistance from a qualified insurance professional.

5. Review beneficiary designations for your various financial accounts including group and individual benefits like life insurance and 401(k)s. Insurance policies and retirement plans are still relevant to your needs and wishes. Many people are under the misconception that if they have a will they are covered. However, beneficiaries designated in documents generally fall outside the scope of a will, so it is critical that you keep your records updated.

6. Specify where important financial account information is located. It may sound like an obvious thing to you, but few people keep a list of where important records pertaining to their saving, retirement plans, college funding plans, mortgage. and insurance reside. Fewer still could name them all quickly in an impromptu quiz. Keep a master list and review it annually.

7. Specify where important non-financial information and valuables are located such as marriage certificates, birth certificates, titles/deeds to the house/cars, passports, jewelry, safe deposit box key, items in storage facilities, etc.

8. Specify your final arrangements such as burial or cremation, where you want to be buried, whether you want to be an organ donor, etc.

9. Have a list of professionals who assist you with your family’s legal and financial affairs (insurance agent, attorney, accountant, etc.).

10. Explain to heirs how your trust works. Trusts arc often a useful legal and estate-planning device for protecting assets from estate taxes and providing a vehicle to be sure survivors get proper administrative and investment advice and counsel. An attorney is the best source of information about the proper use of trusts and whether one would be appropriate for you.

by Pat Nemetch, President APRN, Member, PA State AARP Long Term Care Committee Now that fall is upon us, the leaves are changing colors and filling the skyline with bright reds, oranges and yellows found only during this time of year. Most children also have circled the end of October on the calendar, when Halloween brings out adorable ghosts, goblins and promises of candy.

Just as importantly, October’s arrival means we’re nearing an end to the constant barrage of political campaign ads.

There’s an old adage in political circles that says that no one likes running negative ads, but survey after survey shows they work with voters.

Frankly, I’m concerned that a growing number of voters— including older adults--may base election decisions solely on claims made in campaign ads. The bottom line is this election will be critical for our country and will affect our future and the futures of our children and grandchildren. I encourage you to take the time to understand the issues and become informed voters.

One way to ensure you’re an informed voter is to review AARP’s 2012 Voters’ Guides at www.earnedasay.org. The voter guides feature information from presidential, senatorial and congressional candidates – in their own words – on their plans to strengthen Social Security, Medicare and financial security.

In the coming weeks, AARP will also be releasing Voters’ Guides for state elections addressing a variety of issues including utilities, retirement security, health, and fraud.

But before you can cast your vote this November, it’s important that you have the necessary identification required

by Pennsylvania’s new voter id law. While the legal fight to stop implementation of the new law is continuing, older adults who are currently registered and have voted for years

must be ready to produce the right identification necessary to vote this November.

I also recommend checking with colleagues, friends and acquaintances to be sure they have the proper id needed to cast their vote.

This issue is important because according to a national study, nearly one in five citizens over 65 lack a current, government issued photo ID. Older adults often give up their driver’s license or may never have had one. Seniors are also more likely to lack raised seal birth certificates necessary to acquire a new photo ID. As a non-partisan organization, AARP supports encouraging participation among all voters while assuring the integrity of the voting process. The fact is, with no evidence of any significant voter fraud at the polls anywhere in Pennsylvania, the voter id law attempts to solve a problem that doesn’t exist.

So although court challenges to the law are still underway, older adults can’t run the risk of having their vote not counted in November. Be sure to visit www.votespa.com to learn exactly what identification you’ll need to vote, and take advantage of the help available to secure the necessary documents.

In the meantime, be sure to get out and stay active this fall. As for me, I’m rooting for an Indian Summer before settling down with colder temperatures.

A Name To Live Up To

On a crisp fall evening in 2002, an elderly woman was found wandering dark streets two miles from her home.

A good Samaritan found her and brought her to a local establishment. The woman stated she was on her way to the senior center where she went to every day. She thought the bus forgot to pick her up. The problem was it was eight o’clock at night, and the woman had Alzheimer’s disease. The police were contacted, and they contacted the women’s son to pick her up.

The woman’s family decided that she could no longer live by herself. This is a common story that we have all heard before or read in the local newspaper, but for me it hit close to home. This was not a stranger in a news article, this was Margaret C. Grider, the woman I was named after; it was my grandmother.

At the time, I had been a registered nurse for twelve years.

I was also a single mother with four small children. I knew that personal care homes are a good option for some, but knowing Grandmom I did not think it was the best option for her. I wanted her to be at home and maintain as much dignity and independence as she could; she wanted this as well. Tips for Living With Vision Loss

Huetter, Development Director, Center for Vision Loss When your senior relative experiences vision loss caused by the age-related eye diseases—macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy—you often assume that they can no longer perform daily tasks. How can they cook, do laundry or sign a check if they can’t see well? Often the answer is not to take over these activities for the person, but to make sure that the individual is introduced to adaptive techniques that will make life easier as soon as they are ready to learn them.

Seniors with low vision still can and want to accomplish many basic tasks for themselves. Encourage them to find alternative ways that are helpful for them and then be sure to support their efforts. Organization is critical, for example.

Suggest they always put important items like the television remote control in a designated location so they do not misplace them and become panicked. Store foods in cabinets and cooking utensils in drawers in related groups to help in meal preparation. Label food containers in large print using a dark felt-tip marker or use a system of rubber bands to mark the contents of different kinds of cans. Place raised dots on the stove and microwave to mark visually or tactilely important temperature settings.

Seniors can enjoy mealtime more if they can easily locate their plate and utensils on the table. Use contrasting colors for the plate and the placemat or tablecloth. Place beverages in contrasting colored containers such as coffee in a white mug. Inexpensive writing guides can help a person continue to sign checks and write letters. Bold-line paper with dark lines and larger spaces makes it easier to keep a shopping list or reminders of tasks to be done.

The Center for Vision Loss, the region’s only community benefit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with vision loss, can suggest many more adaptive techniques and devices. The agency provides casework services, escorted transportation with a sighted guide, low vision services, support group meetings, lifeskills education and socialization activities to help restore independence and quality of life.

You Have Reached Your Destination!

“After 300 yards, turn left,” says the tiny yet enchanting feminine voice with the colorful map for a face. In a world of technological wizardry, I have finally entered the 20th century. I have no cell phone, no computer, and no IPod, but I have titanium implants, two VCRs, borderline HDL, and a GPS. My GPS is my friend.

The two most comforting phrases spoken by my 12-volt companion are, “Replanning,” and “You have reached your destination.” The first is a gentle reminder that I didn’t pay attention to the previous instruction, and the latter means I made it safe and sound.

To travelers, GPS means “Global Positioning System.”

This system lets you know where you are on earth and, turn by turn, how to get to your destination. It is not infallible, but for the navigationally challenged, it’s good enough. It gets you where you want to go.

When traveling the unstoppable pathway of time to your final destination, there is another GPS that never fails and never needs recharging. It was programmed once, never needs updating, and works for everyone everywhere, in every culture and ethnic group, no matter how technologically or otherwise challenged. I call this system “God Provides Scripture.” No matter where you are, where you have been, and where you think you are headed, this GPS will give precise, easy-to-understand direction. You will always reach your destination.

The bible’s guarantee is, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). That includes every possible spiritual need you can have. In other words, Scripture provides directions to keep you on track and make you complete.

There is one caveat: The road to life is a toll road. There is a price to pay that no man can afford. That price is the punishment for sin. No one is allowed to pass through the gate until the price is paid. The good news—the gospel—is that Jesus Christ paid that penalty on the cross: “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people” (2 Timothy 2:5, 6). Jesus paid the toll and opened wide the gate to heaven!

Along the way, we will drift aside from the paths of righteousness, but GPS will replan. We can return to the Scriptures to find where we’ve strayed, receive forgiveness, and get back on the path. Jesus promised: “Whoever comes to me I will never cast out” (John 6:37). After the twists and turns of life, we will hear a comforting voice say, “You have reached your destination!” (Matthew 25:23).

Pennsylvania’s Voter ID Law

Editor’s note: The following information is taken directly from a document issued by the Pennsylvania Department of State. At press time it was still uncertain as to whether this new law would be struck down by the state’s Supreme Court. Please be sure to turn to your news sources for a final determination as to whether you may need to follow these new regulations.

FAQ - Department of State Identification Card What is a free department of state photo ID card?

Beginning in the end of August, 2012, PennDOT will begin issuing FREE Department of State photo ID cards that registered voters can use to vote at the polls.

Who is eligible for a free department of state photo id card?

Only registered voters who do not have another photo ID acceptable for voting, who do not possess all of the documentation required to obtain the free PennDOT photo ID and cannot obtain the needed documentation, or cannot obtain the documentation without the payment of a fee will be eligible for a FREE Department of State photo ID card. Examples of missing documents include a certified copy of a birth certificate or Social Security card. All other eligible voters will be given a FREE PennDOT photo ID. Where will a voter be able to receive a FREE Department of State ID card?

Registered voters who cannot obtain the proper documentation needed for a FREE PennDOT photo ID card will be able to obtain a FREE Department of State ID card at their local PennDOT Driver’s License Center. PennDOT Driver’s License Center locations can be found on the web at www.dot.state.pa.us or by phone through PennDOT’s Customer Call Center at 1-800-932-4600.

What is the process for obtaining a FREE Department of State photo ID for voting?

All registered voters seeking to obtain a FREE Department of State ID for voting purposes must first apply for a FREE PennDOT photo ID for voting.

When a PennDOT customer service representative determines that a registered voter does not have the necessary documentation to receive a FREE PennDOT photo ID, the PennDOT employee will then begin the process of issuing a FREE Department Of State photo ID for voting.

In order for a registered voter to obtain a FREE Department Of State ID for voting, a registered voter must complete an Oath/Affirmation form affirming they have no other acceptable identification and a Request For Initial Issuance Of Pennsylvania Department Of State ID For Voting Purposes form.

Information requested will include: • A name • Address • Social Security Number • Proof(s) of residence • County • Previous name and/or address if changed within the past 12 months Voters who have registered within the past 30 days will be able to indicate that by marking a box on the form.

After confirming the voter’s identity and voter registration with the Department of State, the registered voter will then be issued a FREE Department Of State photo ID Card.

Adult day centers are fundamentally the same they offer different levels of health care services.

Centers that are medically oriented have various health care workers and specialists on staff to deal with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, diabetes, congestive heart failure and other medical conditions. The participants often need to receive specialized care and attention while at the adult day centers. Social adult day centers do not offer the same level of skilled medical care, but focus on also offering a safe, healthy environment for seniors. Both centers offer numerous social

Adult Day Care Services provide a coordinated program of professional and compassionate services for adults in a community-based group setting. Services are designed to provide social and some health services to adults who need supervised care in a safe place outside the home during the day. They also afford caregivers respite from the demanding responsibilities of caregiving. Adult day centers generally operate during normal business hours five days a week. Some programs offer services in the evenings and on weekends. Adult day care facilities for the elderly are licensed and inspected by the Department of Aging.
