Like everyone else in our country I was appalled by the killing of the children in Newtown, CT. I cannot for one moment have any idea as to how the families of the murdered children must feel. I can only do what every one else has done - keep the families in our thoughts and prayers.

But is it right to say there is nothing I (or we) can do?

Must we do what we always do - express shock, wonder what can be done and eventually let time put these tragedies in the back of our collective minds?

Not this time. I have already contacted my elected representatives and in no uncertain terms said “something meaningful must be done”. I urge you to take a few moments to do likewise. However, we must not stop there.

We must continue our pressure on them as they are too easily influenced by monied interests, and depend on our apathy to allow them to do little or nothing.

It is a shame that it takes the threat of being fired to get elected officials to act. And they must be forced to act in our best interests not their own.

Did you hear the story about the middle aged lady who went to the casino? Sandy went to the casino for the first time and ended up by a table playing roulette. “How does one decide which number to pick?” She wondered aloud. “I picked my age” suggested an older gentleman on her left. So Sandy decided to pick the number thirty two. The Croupier gave the wheel a spin, it landed on forty seven, and Sandy fell over in a faint.

The neighbors thought it was odd, but 93 year old Morton was dating again. One Monday morning Morton woke up with a funny feeling that something important happened last night. It was during breakfast, that Morton finally remembered what it was. He had proposed to his date Greta. But what she answered he just couldn’t seem to remember. Morton picked up the phone and dialed. ”Hi Greta”, said Morton, “I have a funny question for you, do you remember last night when I proposed?” ”Oh my gosh” gushed Greta, “I’m so glad you called, I knew I said yes to somebody but I just couldn’t recall who it was!”

This issue is not black and white. Like most issues there are valid competing arguments and viewpoints. This does not mean that we cannot come to a meeting of the minds.

Nowadays it seems that compromise is a dirty word, but it is not. It represents the acceptance of different ideas and respect for our fellow citizens.

So again I urge you to act. Let us not see a repetition of this horrific tragedy and say to ourselves “we should have done something about this”. Do it now. Save our children and other innocents.

As to our current issue: We emphasize exercise in this issue. I spent the last five months using two exercise programs consecutively. I saw some time ago that I needed to get back in shape. It seemed like a good idea to relate my experience to you, our readers.

It is my hope that I can inspire some of you to do likewise and get healthier. You need not do the extreme forms of exercise that I did. Just do something that works for you.

You’ll lose weight, strengthen your heart and feel 100% better. Living a bit longer will just be an added bonus.

Program Offers Hope for Chronic Headaches

o you suffer from chronic headaches?

You are not alone. Up to 50 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches, and about 15 percent of the U.S. population suffers from debilitating migraine headaches.

Most headaches are benign and are typically broken down into three major categories: migraines, tension headaches and cluster headaches. Roughly 15 percent of the U.S. population suffers from debilitating migraine headaches, which are one of the most common medical conditions in the Western world.

Symptoms of headaches may include: oral facial pain, neck pain, tooth pain, ear fullness/pain, sinus pressure/pain, sinusitis, visual disturbances, eye dryness and tearing, dizziness, vomiting and nausea. The medical treatment of chronic headaches should begin with a diagnostic workup to rule out disease.

If tests are negative, treatment then may consist of medication and lifestyle management.

f you love to read but now have low vision, you are probably frustrated that you have had to curtail your favorite activity because you can no longer see the text.

The good news is that there are many assistive technology products available that can open the world of print materials to you again.

A traditional magnifying glass is one option. While they come in various strengths, most people will use this kind of magnifier to read important materials but generally not entire books. Handheld video magnifiers such as the RUBY are now becoming popular, however.

Program That Mobilizes Senior Volunteers Is Rebuilding

ince early October ShareCare Faith in Action, an area non-profit that was awarded a federal grant, has been working to re-establish the Senior Corps RSVP program in Lehigh, Northampton and Carbon Counties.

and programs that help the elderly and those living with disabilities remain safely in their homes.

Area seniors also need help accessing benefits they are entitled to, sorting through Medicare paperwork and protecting themselves from fraud. Volunteers are needed to help relieve hunger. Others are needed to serve our veterans, tutor our students and protect the environment.

RSVP offers a full range of volunteer assignments and also provides supplemental insurance coverage for all enrolled volunteers while they are serving and traveling between their home and their assignment.

The needs in our communities are varied and numerous and require a talented and dedicated corps of volunteers.

Getting Into an Exercise Program - My Experiences

Our major focus at Lifestyles over 50 is to provide information to help you have a healthy lifestyle. To that end I committed myself to two exercise programs over the last 5 months. I had a dual purpose. First I wanted to get into better shape. Second, I wanted to pass my experiences on to you, our readers. My hope is that it would inspire you to work on improving your own health.

There were two exercise programs that interested me - “The Rack” and “Insanity”. You likely have seen them on TV. The Rack was developed by Owen McKibbin. His program uses a device made up of metal tubes (see below) that provide a number of different exercises. The second program, “Insanity”, was developed

by Shaun T. Its focus is on an aerobic set of exercises. I did the three month Rack program first followed by the two month Insanity program.

The Insanity program is well named. It is hard core and insane, but I’ll get to that later. As with any exercise program, particularly at my age, 64, you should have medical clearance. Do not try these programs without an OK from your physician.

The Rack

My intention with the Rack was not to get gorgeous abs. I just wanted to build back the muscle I had lost over the last many years.

I had built a comfortable ring of belly fat to insulate me from our harsh winters. The Rack looked like it would fill the bill. It comes with 5 disks. You work out 5 days a week. A workout uses one or more of the disks. As you progress, you combine more disks into each workout. Each session emphasizes a different area of your body.

The disks are listed here: Disk1 - “Into the Zone” This is a general set of exercises including pushups, overhead shoulder presses, bicep curls. It uses the rack as your weights. It includes some aerobic exercises also.

Disk2 - “Explosive Chest” More pushups with variations on grips and motion, various pull ups, bench presses, shoulder presses.

Disk3 - “Ripped Abs” - variations on sit ups, ab crawls, crunches and knee raises.

Disk 4 – “Big Arm Blast” dips, bicep and tricep extensions, various curls.

Disk 5 – “Fat Shredder” squats with the rack, curls and presses, deep lunges, high knees, push ups and ab crawls, mountain climbers, pull ups and dips, squat presses, body dips, bent over rows.

There are no requirements to complete a set number of repetitions in each workout. You try to go at Owen’s pace, or at least as close to it as you can. At the end of each workout I was dripping sweat and exhausted – in other words – a good workout.

After the first session I was really tired, but felt good that I completed it. I took a shower and was sore that day. Fortunately I have a small hot tub in the back of my house. After my second session I jumped in the tub and soaked for about 30 minutes – what a difference. From that day on I was not sore from my workouts. So if you have a hot tub, use it. If not, take very long hot showers.

With any exercise program it is important to eat well. This fuels your body and helps you lose weight. Both of these programs have extensive nutritional advice. I followed them and, even though I was building muscle, I did lose weight – about 20 pounds. The other factor in any exercise program in the mental factor. It is quite easy to talk yourself into stopping or taking days off. You need to resist this as much as possible. As you progress in the program, you do see results and these help encourage you to persevere. In my three months of Rack workouts I only missed two days.

The net effect of the Rack program is that I did lose weight and I did gain muscle and strength. I did not get “gorgeous” abs, but I know that takes much more work. I’ll work on it.

The Insanity Program I saw this program on TV and was struck by its emphasis on cardio workout. I know that cardio is a great complement to any strength workout like the Rack. Since I wanted to evaluate it on its own, I did not use the Rack during my two month workouts with Insanity.

This program is well named.

It is insane. I will tell you right now that if you are not already in good shape you had better get a medical clearance like I did before doing this program. Do not let this keep you from trying Insanity. It is worth it, but be advised – it is strenuous.

Insanity comes with 10 disks. You use the first half of them during the first month and complete the others in the second month. There is a fitness test that you do when you begin the program and repeat every two weeks thereafter. This will objectively measure your progress. (continued on next page)

The disks are: Fit Test, Cardio Circuit, Cardio Power, Cardio Recovery, Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs, Core Cardio, Max Interval Circuit, Max Interval Plyo, Max Cardio and Max Recovery.

You watch the instructor, Shaun T., guide you through the exercises. They consist of sets of exercises that are repeated 2 or 3 times each at ever increasing speeds. He has a group of young adults (young hard bodies –YHB’s) behind him. I know I would never look like the YHB’s, but it was fun to watch them sweat and strain as much as I did.

Shaun T. is very good at encouraging you throughout the set. He constantly reminds you to pay attention to your form and to go at a pace you can handle. There are frequent (and welcome) water breaks. The breaks are short because you need to maintain a fast pace. The sessions last from 30 minutes to over an hour.

I listened to my body intently. In addition to these programs I purchased a watch that came with a heart monitor. They are reasonably priced at about $45-$75. You wear the watch on your wrist and you wrap an elastic band around your chest. The band has a small transmitter that shows sends your heart rate to the watch. I found this to be enormously helpful. Before I started this program my resting heartbeat was around 75. During the workouts it would go up into the 120’s. The most intense workouts registered in the high 130’s to low 140’s. I tried to keep my max around 130.

Results After the program my resting heart rate is about 63. I had a blood test done after 5 months and my numbers were excellent according to my physician. I dropped several inches off my waist. I feel great and my clothes fit better than they have in years. I am a type 2 diabetic and my sugar levels dropped significantly. The combination of exercise and better eating worked for me. It can work for you. “I am too old�

It would be easy for me or for you to say “that’s not for me, I am too old�.

Not true. For research, I met with Chris Leary the co-director at Steel Fitness Center in Allentown. I asked him what, besides experiencing a health scare like a heart attack, would get most people to start an exercise program. Chris pointed to his head and said one word: “motivation�. He said without that no

program will work. You have to find the motivation within yourself. He and his instructors (www.sfpremierhw.com) can help you find the right program and guide you through it, but the true work is in your own head.

I asked him if he had a lot of seniors in his program. He smiled and said I would be quite surprised by the numbers.

So he sent them to me. The age breakdown is as follows: He has 1,270 members aged 60 and over.

839 members are 60-69 years of age.

338 aged 70-79.

80 who are 80-89 years young.

3 who are 90-97!!!

My point is that we can all get motivated to get healthy.

You can do what I did or you can find any one of the many different forms of exercise available to you. If you do not know where to start there are professionals here in the Valley to help you. Are You Two-Faced?

Once when Lincoln was accused of being two-faced, he humbly replied, “If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?”

In ancient Roman mythology, Janus is the god of beginnings and transitions, doorways, and time. He is a twofaced god, looking to the future and the past. The Romans named the month of January in honor of Janus.

Being called two-faced is, in our modern culture, considered an insult. It implies that one is hypocritical or double-dealing, even deceitful.

A two-faced person shows one face or persona to one person, and a different—usually opposite—face to another person for political or social advantage. It can be difficult to tell which is the “real” face.

However, in the Janus sense, having two faces can be a helpful character trait, resulting in spiritual advantage.

The ability to look to the future and the past is a great encouragement in one’s walk with God.

The second, equally important face is the one that looks to the future. One might argue that, short of a crystal ball or atmospheric prognosticator, it is impossible to know the future. The Bible takes care of that forthcoming shortcoming.

As already seen, the Bible tells us about the past and the God who displayed his greatness in difficult times. It also reveals our sinful tendencies and His mercy.

This same book tells us what we need to know about the present and the future. Paul again: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

This is especially appropriate during the month of January, when we celebrate a new year with its “auld lang syne” and “Bet your bottom dollar That tomorrow There’ll be sun!”

Optimism for the future seems ingrained in our souls, giving us a kind of hopeful hope for the hereafter.

Regarding the ultimate future, there is certain hope: “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 12:3–4).

The Bible exhorts us to turn to the past to remember who the Lord is and what he has done. The psalmist sums this up in Psalm 111: “He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and compassionate” (v. 4).

Our parents warned us to look both ways before crossing the street. Our heavenly Father encourages us to look both ways when facing the day. This January, resolve to be twofaced in the good way

During the period of the Judges, the people of ancient Israel constantly returned to sin and anguish because “They set up Baal-Berith as their god and did not remember the Lord their God, who had rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side” (Judges 8:33–34).

Moses’ final sermon to the Israelites contains over a dozen exhortations to the people to remember their slavery and deliverance; the giving of the law; God’s provision during the wilderness wandering; their sins and consequences; their enemies and victories; the source of their wealth; and the history of their fathers.

The only way to remember is to look back. Philosopher George Santayana warned, “Those who cannot remember the

Get Organized - Identifying Your Important Papers

appy New Year! In 2013, we’re already celebrating the Year of the Snake (according to the Chinese calendar) and even the International Year of Statistics. I’m suggesting giving the new year a more personal touch by declaring 2013 as the Year of Getting Important Papers Organized and Updated.

If you’re like me, you probably spent part of the holidays watching different versions of A Christmas Carol. While I’m fascinated by the many forms the story takes, the key message - we can prepare for the future by changing the way we live our lives—remains the same. In practical terms, that means planning for your financial future should probably include more than waiting for a visit from a Christmas ghost.

Frankly, the hardest part is just getting started. I believe all of us need to understand and re-acquaint ourselves with these important documents that ensure we continue to live life as we choose and not how someone else thinks we should.

I recommend beginning the process by making sure your Power of Attorney is updated and reflects your current wishes.

As a geriatric care manager who works with many families, I know a well-planned Power of Attorney document is an essential component of estate planning.

Please remember that most of these documents are state sensitive and professional guidance from an experienced attorney is necessary to best protect you and your family. If you need help getting started, the AARP website (aarp.org) is a great resource to learn more about estate planning.

Finally, make sure you gather all these important documents in a very safe place along with your birth certificate, veteran’s discharge papers, marriage license, deed to your home, investment information and life insurance policies.

January is a great month to get this planning done. Since you’re spending more time inside, there’s plenty of opportunity to gather and organize your important papers and get prepared for a meeting with the attorney you choose. In fact many attorneys will come to your home to talk about your specific estate planning needs.

I’d like to offer one final word of warning. Please be careful when you’re searching the house for these important papers, and don’t get frustrated if they aren’t where you thought you left them.

When the work is done and you’ve pulled everything together, you’ll be free to sit back and enjoy the warmth of your home -- hopefully while watching the snow fall outside.

I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the many types of Power of Attorney documents, meet with an attorney to discuss your needs and make sure the final documents are appropriately drafted and filed.

You’ll also need a Healthcare Power of Attorney and Living Will. These documents spell out your choices and preferences for health care treatment when you’re unable to express them yourself.

By thinking ahead and communicating your preferences, you can prevent arguments and avoid forcing someone to guess your wishes.

Most importantly, you’ll be making personal health care decisions for yourself.

The beginning of a new year is also an ideal time to review your Will and make any changes to how you want your assets distributed when you’re gone. The will should appoint an executor, a personal representative who will carry out your wishes. The fact is if you don’t appoint an executor, the state will.

Help for Those with Memory Loss

recently spoke with Anne Grogan, MSW, about the Warren Hospital’s Memory Clinic. This is a relatively new program whose goal is to identify patients who suffer from significant memory loss.

It is different in that it diagnoses memory loss in adults of any age. Memory loss is often associated with advancing age, and particularly with Alzheimer’s disease, but one can have memory problems at any age.

Recently the Clinic had a patient who was thought to be suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. It turns out that the test showed it was not Alzheimer’s. The patient was then successfully treated for depression Drinking, recreational drugs, depression and even lack of exercise can have an impact on memory.

When we talk about memory loss we are not talking about the “incidents” we all have. “Where did I leave my keys?”

“Why did I walk into this room?”, “What is her name?”

These are common memory lapses. The time to be concerned is when you constantly have memory loss, when others close to you comment on your frequent lapses. If one forgets really important items like paying bills, or taking medications, or it interferes with daily functions. That is when you need to find out if you or a loved one has serious memory issues.

This is where the Memory Clinic can help an individual.

To be treated at the Memory Clinic you have to get a prescription from your doctor. All results of the Memory Clinic’s tests and treatment plans are discussed with the patient immediately and then go to client’s physician for further review with the patient.

Patients who are referred to the Memory Clinic at St. Luke’s Warren receive a comprehensive diagnostic test and interview administered by a licensed social worker. Test results are immediately reviewed by a neuro-psychologist who specializes in memory and behavioral modification.
