Faith Restoration at Phoebe Ministries

Audrey, a 50-something Phoebe resident, lives out Saint Paul’s message of being content in all circumstances (Phillipians 4:11). A year ago Audrey, who has multiple sclerosis, was alone and depressed; now she inspires a community.

“Faith is the aspect of our life that gives us hope, and without hope you cannot keep on going, you just give up.

Faith gives life meaning and a sense of vocation,” says Rev. Dr. Scott Brooks Cope, Director of Pastoral Care at Phoebe Ministries.

No one agrees more than Audrey Oppelt, a resident at Phoebe Allentown. Just a year ago, Audrey was homebound, struggling to deal with multiple sclerosis and meeting her own basic needs. Compounding the situation was internal strife in her own family that left Audrey alone – physically and socially. Audrey hit a low point as everything that she knew and counted on was falling apart, including her faith.

She reached out to the only other place she knew, her church and Pastor Deborah Rahn Clemens, New Goshenhoppen UCC in East Greenville. Through Pastor Clemens’ knowledge of the Phoebe Ministries care system, Pastor Clemens was able to find Audrey a home at Phoebe Wyncotte where she would receive patient–centered care as the MS continued to deteriorate her body.

As the therapists, nurses and staff at Phoebe helped Audrey physically stabilize, there was another transformation taking place in Audrey’s spiritual life. “Being placed at Phoebe was the miracle of my life. I feel that my physical health is connected with my spiritual health” she says.

“We focus on caring for the whole person, not just physically but emotionally and spiritually,” says Pastor Brooks-Cope. “There is a definite connection in one’s physical, mental and spiritual well being,” says Audrey.

“Pastor Scott (Brooks-Cope) helped me rediscover my faith, including forgiving my family.” (continued on next page)

Working Smart When Bringing Care Home

If you had a stroke and were told you needed to find a place to recoup and rehabilitate, where would you like to go?

If you had a heart attack, what hospital do you want to go to?

If you could not live alone, where would you like to live?

If you broke your hip and could only go home with a home care agency, is there an agency you prefer?

If you had cancer, would you want to try alternative treatment and/or receive radiation or chemotherapy?

If you needed end of life care, would you want hospice care and to remain at home?

Sharing your wishes or learning the wishes of loved ones will help in implementing care and ease the worries of wondering if you’re doing the right thing.

If you’re already caring for a loved one it’s a good idea to answer the care questions for yourself. Additionally, ask yourself, how will my loved one be cared for if I am unable to provide the care I do today. Yikes! Scary thought, right?

planning, communication and documentation is all it takes to rest easy!

Several legal documents can accomplish much of the above for you or your loved one. A will, advance directive, POA, living will and durable health care power of attorney keep YOU in control; not the children nor the government.

There are many attorneys who specialize in elder law, as well as provide options for low income needs for legal advise. Make sure your parents know that questions that may seem to be intrusive, and perhaps even bad manners to ask, is sincerely for their own protection and quality of life. Emphasize they should use their assets to enjoy quality of life; they earned it and you acknowledge their money is theirs. If they express the intent to leave you an inheritance certainly be thankful, but reiterate that their careful saving led to their ability to care for themselves and that, too is a gift.

If care is already needed for you or a loved one, completing an assessment of tasks being done and managing those tasks to maximize all available options will help you or your loved one remain safe in their home. (continued on next page)

(continued from previous page) By utilizing the care assessment worksheet you can determine which tasks require help outside the family or those that incur a cost and how much. You can also research the many options available to assist you in maximizing time.

A free task worksheet is available at www.lifestyles over50. com, then search for “Daily Living TasksWorkshop”. Tasks are broken down by two categories: activities of daily living (i.e. personal care such as bathing/dressing, meals and meds), and instrumental activities of daily living (i.e. shopping, laundry, money management).

After you determine how much help is needed in each area, each task requiring “some” or “a lot” of assistance is broken down - who completes each task, how much time per week does it take and what is the cost. For example, let’s say you are organizing your mom’s medications. It takes you two hours per month to “pour” them. You also call mom every day to ensure they’ve been taken, refill and retrieve them from the pharmacy as needed. These three tasks count for an additional two more hours per week. After completing this type of determination for all tasks, you can strategize alternatives that may be available and cost effective to maintain the same results and save you time. Based on the previous example, a possible solution to save you time may be an automatic pill dispenser. For a fee, you can rent a dispenser

that either you or a nurse can fill with the prescribed medications for a month. The machine will alert your mother to take the pills at the prescribed time. If a dose is missed, you will be called and alerted that she missed her dose. You can then follow up to determine why the dose was missed.

This can potentially save you hours each week and month!

Utilize this type of strategy including tapping other family member resources to make sure you or your loved ones care is covered and you maintain a life balance for yourself.

This is just one example of many creative options that are available to you to maintain the safe environment you’ve already created. It will also afford you peace of mind and the ability to add “quality” to the time spent with loved ones and not just “quantity” of care giving tasks.

Bring Back the Memories: Antique Road Show

29th Antique City Fun Fair -- the largest and most diverse indoor antique, art and collectibles show in Pennsylvania -- returns to Lehigh University’s Rauch Fieldhouse in Bethlehem on April 13-14.

One of the most popular attractions this year will be the original Miss America crown that was awarded to Margaret Gorman, who represented the District of Columbia at the inaugural 1921 competition in Atlantic City. The show will also feature an island where antique dolls, clothing and accessories are presented along with Teddy Bears galore. Visitors are invited to bring their favorite to Booth 518 where expert Philip May will share its genealogy and value.

Leaning to the raucous are devices such as the Pennsylvania Prohibition Pretzel, a pocket-sized flask with funnel and stopper was once used to conceal demon rum, a flashlight with booze in the batteries and a walking stick with hooch in the handle. In addition, vintage gaming gadgetry including card cutters, deceitful dice and tricked tables will be demonstrated and offered for amusement in Booth 706.

Show Producer Norman Schaut moved his megashow to Rauch Fieldhouse for the first time last year after 24 shows in Atlantic City and suburban Philadelphia. The results were overwhelming. Attendance tripled last year. “We have found a

If possible find out the history of your piece. The more you know the better able you will be to ask good questions of dealers and understand the answers.

Shop with a Reputable Dealer The longer a dealer has been in business the more likely it is that the dealer will have a good reputation. Ask family and friends if they have dealt with a dealer(s)) and are satisfied. For retail shops, call the Better Business Bureau and see if they have a record of complaints.

Any dealer from which you purchase an expensive antique should be willing to give you a written receipt stating all the information you were given. If a dealer is unwilling to provide a detailed receipt, take your business elsewhere.

Browsers and shoppers will find everything from furniture to fine art, jewelry to jukeboxes, Mickey Mouse to Mickey Mantle, dolls and trains to ships and planes.

Don’t be Afraid to Ask for a Discount Be tactful and respectful when Maine Antiques Digest, the largest asking for a discount. Don’t Hesitate Too Long If you see a piece that you love, that fits perfectly into your life (or fits perfectly into that odd-sized space in the bedroom!), and your budget - go for it right away. If you walk away the item may very well not be there when you go back for it. It will likely be the last time you ever see the item.

Forty percent of the US population is taking four or more medications each day and drug interactions can increase dramatically when patients take multiple medications.

When it comes to using a medication, it is important to know that no medication is completely safe. So what should you do to reduce the risks of using medications and get the most benefit from them? Become an active member of your health care team. A health care team consists of your doctor, physician’s assistant, nurse, pharmacist, and YOU. Dental Implants - Return to Normal

Over 178 million people in the U.S. are missing at least one tooth. Did you know that over 35 million people in the U.S. are missing all of their teeth? And in that group, 23 million Americans missing all of their teeth are 55 years or older. Ninety percent of that group wears dentures. Unfortunately, many of those denture wearers are unhappy.

Why? Because conventional dentures are a poor substitute for your natural teeth. At best, your biting efficiency is around 10-25% of your natural teeth.

Loose dentures cause many people to gag. They also can make contact when talking resulting in embarrassing “clicking” sounds. They can fall out resulting in very awkward social situations. Most people can tolerate dentures, some better than others. But most of my patients are generally not very happy with their “false teeth”.

Also, the failure of mini implants in the upper jaw is greater. Mini implants are a great option for patients with medical problems who cannot tolerate a longer surgery. Dental implants can be used in different ways to support dentures. Although they can be beneficial in both the upper and lower jaws, most patients first consider implants to support their lower teeth. In general, most patients have considerably more difficulty with the lower denture. The roof of the mouth acts like a suction cup so a well made upper denture will often have decent retention. The constant battle of the lower lip and tongue makes lower denture stability particularly challenging.

Let’s discuss some of the ways dental implants are used to hold in a lower denture. A popular technique is to place 2 to 4 conventional titanium implants into the front part of the lower jaw. This surgical procedure can be done with local anesthesia or sedation. The procedure takes about an hour. Once placed, dental implants take about 3 months to integrate into the jawbone. After that your dentist places connectors on the implants that allow your denture to “snap” on the implants. The stability is amazing! Although 4 implants gives the best stability, two implants are still much greater than none. The average cost of a conventional dental implant is about $2000 each.

Another option is the use of “mini implants” to stabilize a denture. The smaller one-piece implants are placed through the gums under local anesthesia or sedation. A minimum of four mini implants is needed. Once placed by my office, patients go immediately to their general dentist and the connectors are added to the denture. This eliminates the waiting period.

Unfortunately, the success rate of this type of implant is not

Free Help for Tax Returns

April’s arrival signals the arrival of spring and the start of the baseball season. The days are longer, the sun is brighter and trees and plants are just beginning to show colors once again.

Retirees whose previous experience with tax returns was limited to wages often face new provisions and complex forms to determine the taxable portion of their retirement income, permissible health care deductions and, if they sell their house, treatment of capital gains.

Ensuring eligible taxpayers know about Pennsylvania’s Tax Forgiveness program, which exempts people with income below certain levels from paying state income tax.

Helping taxpayers file for the federal Saver’s Credit, which gives a credit to low- and moderate-income taxpayers for contributions to retirement savings plans.

Of course another tradition of spring is the April 15 deadline to file income taxes. According to all the research, completing tax returns is becoming increasingly complex. In fact, an IRS study reported that 90% of taxpayers now get help doing their taxes: 63% pay a commercial tax preparer and 27% use taxpayer software programs.

The good news is you can receive free help with your taxes from AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation program.

Founded in 1968 by four AARP volunteers, Tax-Aide today includes more than 35,000 volunteers at 6,100+ Tax-Aide sites in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The free service is aimed at low- and moderate-income people 60 and older, but others are welcomed as well. Volunteers are trained and IRS-certified each year to ensure they know and understand the latest changes and additions to the U.S. Tax Code and can help fill out federal, state and local tax forms.

Free expert tax help can be important when a tax refund might keep an older adult from having to choose between paying for groceries and keeping the lights on. To find the Tax-Aide site nearest you, go to aarp.org/findtaxhelp or call toll-free 888-227-7669. Some sites operate on an appointment only basis; others are first-come, first-served.

Can you resist a 70s-era smile when you sing this song in your head: “Love is all around, no need to fake it. You can have the town, why don’t you take it. You’re gonna make it after all” (Sonny Curtis)? Can you picture Mary Richards tossing her hat in the air?

We can learn something about love from television. For some reason, I’ve taken to watching Family Feud in my off hours. As its name implies, each of two teams is composed of family members. Several answers are hidden on a scoreboard, and each family member must give an answer that matches one on the board. No matter how far-fetched, foolish or fatuous the contestant’s guess, the other family members, after a brief shocked pause, with the possibility of losing lots of money, in front of millions of viewers, clap and shout, “GOOD ANSWER! GOOD ANSWER!” That is true love!

April may be named after Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, known to the Romans as Venus. In the northern hemisphere, it is a spring month, when flowers bloom and “a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love” (Tennyson). Many animals, as well as humans, seek to attract mates with courtship displays peculiar to their species.

Gifts, fancy homes, odd dances, and puffed-up chests serve both man and beast alike.

The greatest love stories are found in the bible, and no wonder: “God is love” (1 John 4:8). He doesn’t just love—he is love. Everything he does is wrapped in a love more pure and permanent than can be imagined.

Sometimes, it can seem hard to love a child or spouse that doesn’t love back. Imagine having millions of “children” who don’t return your love. When the children of Israel ignored God and showered their love on idols, he lamented, “I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love; I

God gives rain and grain, protection and possessions, health and wealth to those who love him and those who don’t (Deuteronomy 11:14; Jeremiah 33:6). He does this, not only because he is love, but to draw people to himself. “Do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance?” (Romans 2:4). The mercy of God in withholding judgment should cause men to appreciate his love and turn to him for forgiveness and gratitude for his provisions.

Above all, God gave a gift that no man could match, no less conceive of: He sent his son to pay the penalty for our sin and lack of love for him (John 3:16). “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32).

God is not the type to “love ’em and leave ’em,” “because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you’” (Hebrews 13:5). Once we have given our heart to him, he will never lose it: “Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day” (2 Timothy 1:12).

Because of our relationship to him, Jesus said, “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). Our lives will reflect his: “Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness” (Psalm 29:2). His security is ours: “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27).

Unlike the Venus de Milo, the beautiful, loving God has two arms to save, support, and supply you (Isaiah 59:1).

Aortic Heart Valve Replacement Improves Quality of Life for Active 88 Year Old Allentown Resident

On a sunny summer day at Lake Hauto, just north of Tamaqua, 88-year old Wilbur Boyer stopped half way up the short incline from the lake to his summer home. Hearing heavy breathing, his wife turned to face him, looked into his eyes and knew.

The familiar feeling of dread returned. Ten years earlier, Wilbur had a triple bypass heart surgery, and they both knew his aortic value issue had returned. Later, he met with his cardiologist Gerald Pytlewski, DO, of St. Luke’s Cardiology Associates, and the couple was told that another open heart procedure was not an option for him. Wilbur disliked the idea of a reduced quality of life and says, “Shortness of breath can be very debilitating.” And he did not relish the additional symptoms associated with a faulty heart valve – excess fluid, pneumonia and eventually, the inevitable.

Boyer, a chemist by trade and later a consultant, had been retired, but his investigative mind had not. Despite the newness of the TAVR procedure, information available from other areas of the country demonstrated successful outcomes. Boyer did a lot of research and eventually had “no reservations trying it,” as he says, “The advantages of the surgery outweighed any disadvantages. Prior to the surgery, I underwent pretty extensive testing so the doctors were sure I was physically strong enough for the procedure. The St. Luke’s doctors and staff don’t take any chances.”

St. Luke’s describes the TAVR as a catheter-based procedure for patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis who are not candidates for conventional aortic valve replacement surgery. The TAVR procedure enables the placement of a balloon-expandable aortic heart valve into the heart through a catheter placed into the femoral artery or through an opening between the ribs, thus making the overall procedure much less invasive for the patient.

Cardiothoracic surgeon Stephen Olenchock, MD, Section Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery for St. Luke’s University Health Network, met with the Boyers and presented an alternative surgical option, a new minimally-invasive procedure to replace dysfunctional heart valves with an artificial valve.

The procedure is called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), and St. Luke’s had recently been selected as one of the first institutions in the country to perform the procedure. Boyer was selected as the first patient

Boyer’s surgery went smoothly, said Dr. Olenchock. Boyer happily recounts that St. Luke’s staff and doctors were “very helpful in explaining the surgery and handling all questions and concerns, especially the concerns that my wife had.”

Immediately after the surgery, Boyer awoke in the intensive care unit (ICU) asking the nurse how to access the WIFI. He had his laptop with him in the hospital, and he wanted to connect to the Internet to check the stock market and see the activity in his portfolio.

Although there is no WIFI in the ICU, he was soon moved into his recovery room and was free to roam the Internet. “Recovery was very good, I was in and out of the hospital in three days,” tells Boyer. “I had no physical restrictions upon my return home except for not being able to drive for two weeks.”

Boyer, of Allentown, says that he is more active than he was prior to the surgery. He and his wife are active travelers, he leads a local investment club, volunteers for Meals on Wheels and is an active member in a senior group. Most of all, he is looking forward to this summer at his lake house and boating with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The “Hands” Project

all in. They love to tell their stories. I usually sit with someone a few hours. I tape record the conversation so I am not busy writing the whole time. I hold their hands and listen. After talking, the “object” of their choosing is discovered and we do the pictures. That’s the easy part.

How did they feel about the final project?

There is no cost to participate in the project. I give each person an 8x10 of their hands holding their chosen object.

Some have cried seeing them - stating that I’ve captured their whole life in one picture! Many pictures are used after the participants pass away - at funerals, or memorials. Many hang on the walls of their children’s and grandchildren’ss homes. My goal is to get these images and stories published into a book.

What did you find satisfying about this project?

I believe everyone has a story to tell. Many people are sitting alone day after day in nursing homes, or at home with no one to talk to and it’s sad. If I can make someone’s day by spending time with them, then becoming part of their life - then I’m happy. I am pleased when they feel “worthy” and “appreciated” after doing the project. This is just a small legacy they are leaving behind.

How long have you been in photography?

I took photography classes in 1990 at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. Mostly shot and developed Black and Whites.

I then went into nursing, but 4 years ago I went professional, and one year ago, I left my nursing career to strictly do photography full time.

Do you have other projects in the works or planned for the future?

My creativity is always flourshing and growing, but for now I am growing my business and will continue with the hand project until it’s a book! I will be going on a mission trip this year so, I am sure my camera will be with me.

What inspired you to get into photography?

My father. There’s not a moment of my childhood that was not captured. Whether by film, video or audio my dad got it.

My father, technically, wasn’t a photographer, but surely had all the equipment to be one! It’s amazing how many boxes and boxes of pictures and albums I now have in my basement full of my upbringing. I always had a camera and took pictures, but about 5 years ago my husband Zeke encouraged me to take it to the next level. I thank him everyday from the bottom of my heart for that push and encouragement to go for it!

What inspired you to create the “Hands” project?

I lost both of my parents in 2006 and 2007. I’d give anything to hold their hands and listen to their stories one more time. Afterwards, I went into hospice nursing. I spent many hours walking the floors of the Lehigh Valley nursing homes and found so many people who were lonely and just wanted to share their stories. I began sitting with patients and holding their hands and listening. I looked down at their hands and wondered where have the been?, whose lives have they touched?, what have they been through? Then I saw the beauty in them.

Each different. Each aged. But all beautiful. I then asked them, “if you were to choose one object that represents your journey, what would it be?” The rest is history.

How did you go about finding subjects?

I ask friends and use social networking to get the idea out there. I go to nursing homes and talk to the activity directors to see if anyone would be interested. I do speaking engagements and recuit there as well. I am always looking for more participants.

John’s varied background includes architectural millwork and production. Both in their fifties, they struggled to find jobs over the last several years in this difficult market.

Unable to find a job and caught in the age trap, they decided to “create a job for us”. They decided to look for a franchise that would fit into their lifestyle and skill set. After doing their homework they settled on Furniture Medic.

Bethlehem Couple Shares Secrets to Staying Young

At Lifestyles over 50, our mission is to encourage vibrant and healthy living. There’s no better way to teach than by example, so we set out to feature individuals in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding area who model a healthy, balanced lifestyle and give back to their community.

This month, we have the privilege to feature a couple from Bethlehem who do it all, and do it well.

For exercise, Marianne and Ernie both walk every day and participate in a yoga class twice weekly. In addition to walking with Ernie and their cocker spaniel, Marianne walks at least three and a half miles every day. “I do that for myself,� she says, “It’s very important to have that alone time. From where we live, we can walk to the library and the post office.

That adds a lot of walking.�

Spend a day with Ernie and Marianne Bergmann, and you will walk several miles (at a fast clip) and possibly attend a yoga class. You may help an elderly neighbor, work on the construction site of a new home, or look at photos from their latest trip to Europe or Alaska. In the spacious rooms of their 1920’s style brick home, marked by high ceilings, tall windows and stained oak trim, you’ll find memorabilia from the Netherlands, artwork and fabrics from the American southwest and a photo of Ernie’s dad with Albert Einstein.

Good habits and mindfulness have proven to be imperative for the Bergmanns. Eleven years ago Marianne was diagnosed with breast cancer. “When I first found out,� she recalls, “I felt that my body had failed me even with the care I took.

But after the surgery and seven weeks of radiation, I bounced back very fast. My conclusion and that of my oncologist was that my healthy lifestyle had a lot to do with it.�

Youthful and full of energy, Marianne and Ernie know that diet and exercise are critical to staying healthy. Marianne has followed a vegetarian regimen for 30 years, but the key to eating well, they both feel, is portion control. “I think you can

a child, she would bike for a half hour to the beach and walk until she was tired. “Being outdoors and in nature has always been an important part of who I am. I’m a beach person,” she muses.

Ernie spent a great deal of time in Cape Cod and the mountains of Switzerland and Colorado as a boy. He attended climbing school and in graduate school was part of a mountaineering club.

Ernie and Marianne met while he was a graduate student at Princeton University. Marianne had just arrived in the United States to work as an au pair. She had attended physical therapy school and worked as a childcare giver in Holland, and then had come to the US to find independence and practice another language. She had been in the states only six weeks when she met Ernie, and they were married a year later.

It was Ernie’s career that brought the couple to the Lehigh Valley. After earning his masters and doctoral degrees in physics, he accepted a faculty position with Lehigh University. He later took a position in research with AT&T Bell Laboratories and stayed with the Labs through its many transitions in the 1990’s, meanwhile earning some 40 patents. He now does part-time consulting in fiber optics. Ernie’s interest in the sciences was passed down from his father, a physicist who worked on various projects with Albert Einstein, and his mother, a researcher and teacher of physical chemistry.

While Ernie was in graduate school, Marianne worked as a babysitter and later a preschool teacher. She decided to stay at home after their three children were born, but she also worked as a florist, aerobics instructor, and religious education director with the Unitarian Church. She has managed her own business as a massage therapist for the past 25 years. Her family was business oriented, she reflects, and

she and Ernie passed along a balance of academic and humanitarian interests to their three children, all of whom have their own distinguished careers in medicine and the sciences.

When they are not working, the Bergmanns spend time helping others.

Marianne volunteered with Hospice for many years, but now she prefers to remain flexible in order to help friends when there is a need. She calls herself “the roving grandma.”

With her training and experience, she makes herself available for everything from assisting a friend during childbirth by giving massage, to treating an older child to a go-kart race or to a musical at a local theatre.

Together, Ernie and Marianne attend their friends’ children’s choral concerts, dance recitals and school plays. Ernie works with Habitat for Humanity twice a week. He also offers his technical skills to help seniors with their computer issues, serves as a judge at school science fairs and goes along to help Marianne when someone needs them.

The Bergmanns have a passion for traveling and always seem to have an adventure planned. They have had the opportunity to visit their children and their own four grandchildren in Chile, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Australia, Arizona and California, to name a few of the places the children have lived and worked. The two frequently travel to the Netherlands. They have hiked the Andes Mountains in Patagonia and climbed a volcano in Chile. They are especially fond of the American Southwest after spending a year on sabbatical in New Mexico. Marianne muses, “My all time favorite place is Bryce Canyon. When I’m feeling hot in the summer, my mind goes to Iceberg Lake, Montana in Glacier National Park, and my newest favorite city is Barcelona.”

Marianne and Ernie agree that the best part about being older is having learned the difference between what is important and what society says is important. “You can focus on what is real,” she says, “You have to be open to changes and have a sense of humor.”

Adapting After Cancer

Lehigh-Northampton LINK to Aging and Disability Resources

by Kim Melusky, Lehigh County Aging and Adult Services Lehigh-Northampton LINK to Aging and Disability Resources is an initiative that takes a seamless approach in the way we assist seniors and adults with disabilities who need help with activities of daily living. The Lehigh-Northampton LINK network consists of both core and collaborative partners.

Lehigh-Northampton LINK’s core partners are the Lehigh County Office of Aging and Adult Services, Northampton County Area Agency on Aging, Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living, and both Lehigh and Northampton County Apprise Programs.

We work together to provide information and assistance services to seniors and adults with disabilities and foster a collaborative relationship with other agencies throughout the Lehigh Valley that provide supportive services to these populations. These agencies will become LehighNorthampton LINK collaborative partners.

Collaborative partners consist of agencies and organizations that work with housing issues, transportation,

employment, county government, and those organizations that serve people with other disabilities that overlap with the targeted populations.

These partners participate in meetings and cross training sessions, both as a participant and as a trainer, to collaborate about available programs and services for the aging and disabled community.

Because of these LINK collaborations, partner agencies are more efficiently and effectively assisting individuals to navigate a complex system of federal, state and local programs while providing a “no wrong door” entry point to needed programs and services.

Movie Review

by Art Villafane, Lifestyles over 50 The Magic of Belle Isle starring Morgan Freeman and Virginia Madsen In an effort to tap into his original talent, an author moves to a rural town, where he befriends a single mother and her three kids, who help reignite his passion for writing.

Morgan Freeman plays Monte Wildhorn - a washed up writer who is wheelchair-bound. He drinks excessively and hates the world. His nephew gets him a house in a very small town. His neighbors are a divorced mom Charlotte O’Neill (played by Virginia Madsen) and her 3 young daughters.

With the house he also gets an overweight white Labrador Retriever.

As irascible as he is, the nice folks of the town treat him cordially. He slowly develops a friendship with Charlotte’s middle daughter, Finnegan O’Neill, played by Emma Fuhrmann, a young and talented newcomer.

Finnegan asks him to teach her about imagination. She uses her allowance to pay him. He commences to teach her to open her mind and see what is obvious and not obvious.

His friendship with Charlotte also grows. Her ability to play piano and his way with words make for a most pleasant combination.

His task of teaching Finnegan about imagination is a rather unique piece of writing in a movie. As I listened in on his lessons, I could not help but work my own imagination.

As Finnegan made up stories using her imagination, I did the same.

Monte teams up with his neighbor’s mentally impaired son, Carl Loop. No one ever pays attention to Carl so when Monte makes him his sidekick, Carl gets to feel quite special.

Maybe Monte is not so irascible after all. Not having, or wanting, to write for years he writes a short story for the youngest of the children, Flora, as a birthday present for her - and so his writing is reborn. The movie in a way is about Monte being reborn in a few ways. But Charlotte and her girls received as much as they gave to Monte.

This is a feel good movie that I am sure you will enjoy.

Volunteers Help the Environment

by Diane Schrameyer Director, RSVP Senior Corps “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.� The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. One of my favorite quotes of all times are the words spoken by the Lorax written by Dr.. Seuss. This message, in its simplicity, really gets to the heart of the matter. It challenges each one of us to do more than bemoan the state of the world around us.

Since the story of the Lorax is focused on the need to protect our environment this message has particular relevance in April as we prepare to celebrate another Earth Day.

The world around us is coming alive again with sights and sounds of Spring. We have constant reminders of what a beautiful region we live in. I’d like to acknowledge some of those dedicated volunteers who “care a whole awful lot� about protecting and improving our environment .

Last Saturday I witnessed a team of volunteers hard at work cleaning up the litter along a stretch of Airport Road.

many times I passed signage indicating a particular group responsible for keeping that stretch of road free of trash and litter or when I drove past black trash bags –symbols of their hard work – resting on the roadside waiting to be picked up.

Each time I experience a sense of gratitude for such dedicated individuals whose hard work benefits us all.

Another group of dedicated volunteers helping protect our environment are the members of RSVP’s Senior Environment Corps. Since 1997 Stream Monitors have been working in the Little Lehigh and Bushkill watersheds. They go out each month to gather water samples and perform a series of tests to determine water quality and maintain a baseline study of each watershed. Several members also do environmental awareness programs for students and adults by utilizing a groundwater flow model to demonstrate how easily contaminants can get into our water.

Even though the admonishment from the Lorax spoke specifically about protecting the environment. I believe it can be a challenge to each of us about so many things around us.

Whatever the condition we observe – the needs of our elderly; young students not being able to read; homelessness; hunger – it’s not going to get better…. unless each one of us “cares a whole awful lot” and is motivated to do something to make a difference.
