Hello, and welcome to the new year. We here at Lifestyles over 50 are looking forward to another year of bringing you valuable information. We might even throw in a little entertainment.

This coming year we plan to put an emphasis on health information and issues. As the saying goes: “if you have your health you have everything”. If there are topics you would like covered please let me know.

In this issue we start that focus on health by bringing you two articles on health training. We have one story on yoga and one on Pilates. These are ideal ways get and keep your body and mind in excellent shape.

We have a great article on Scrapbooking. This is becoming an ever popular pastime and a wonderful way to preserve family memories. If you start scrapbooking you will have a very memorable experience and if you engage family members it will be even more of an experience.

The boomer year we are highlighting this month is 1971 - about 15 years before I was born. OK, I can hear some of you laughing! I know who you are, and you will pay for your derision. I get no respect, no respect at all.

Anyway, we have an informative story on landing a retirement job. These days are difficult for the job market, but nonetheless there are opportunities out there and we offer some tips on securing some of them for you.

Things To Do in January with the Grandkids

1. Visit the Pennsylvania German Exhibit, a major exhibition featuring the history, culture, and contributions of Pennsylvania Germans to the Lehigh Valley and America. Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum, 432 W. Walnut St., Allentown, 2. Visit Blue Mountain Blue Mountain ski area and watch the NASTAR races, every Sunday in January from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. . Try ice skating. Visit the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena, 3323 7th Street, Whitehall; The Steel Ice Center at 320 East First Street, Bethlehem; or the Emmaus Ice Rink, located on the basketball courts on Williams Street, north of the Emmaus Public Library.

4. What better way to get cozy and warm than to get creative with some pictures depicting scenes of winter fun? So make some hot cocoa and get the kids to settle down to work on some winter coloring pages.

5. Sometimes the best things in life are not only relatively free, but are completely simple. Your family can have hours of fun with just a sled and a snow-covered hill. This most classic of winter activities can be excellent exercise (all those trips downhill mean you and your kids have to go uphill first!).

6. Gather the kids around the fire and play a non-electronic board game.

7. Bake cookies together. Have a cookie party. Invite the neighbors over, and share your culinary creations.

8. Put on a show. Have your child invite some friends over and put on a production with finger puppets as actors.

Help the kids write a play and then put on a show with dialogue, and maybe even a few songs. If you don’t have finger puppets, you can use stuffed animals or make your own characters using construction paper cut-outs and popsicle sticks or straws.

9. Pull all those old photo boxes out of the closet. Supply albums or three ring binders and sleeves and let each child start his own scrapbook.

10. Volunteer at the local soup kitchen.

There were these two cows, chatting over the fence between their fields. The first cow said, “I tell you, this madcow-disease is really pretty scary. They say it is spreading fast; I heard it hit some cows down on the Johnson Farm.” The other cow replies, “I ain’t worried, it don’t affect us ducks.”

A family of three tomatoes were walking downtown one day when the little baby tomato started lagging behind. The big father tomato walks back to the baby tomato, stomps on her, squashing her into a red paste, and says, “Ketchup!”

If it’s true that girls are inclined to marry men like their fathers, it is understandable why so many mothers cry so much at weddings.

The math teacher saw that little Johnny wasn’t paying attention in class. She called on him and said, “Johnny! what are 4, 2, 28 and 44?” Little Johnny quickly replied, “NBC, CBS, HBO and the Cartoon Network!”

Scrapbooking

by Vicki Bezems, Lifestyles over 50 What is a scrapbook? And why make a scrapbook as opposed to a simple photo album? â&#x20AC;&#x153;In a word, words!!

Everyone knows a picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes it is those few extra words that make all the difference,â&#x20AC;? according to Christine Abela, scrap-booking artist. There are a number of very good reasons for scrapping your photos! Some of them might seem obvious, while others you may have never even thought of.

1. Scrapbooking protects and preserves your pictures (with acid free scrapbooking materials and glue.)

2. Scrapbooks preserve your heritage along with your pictures. . Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll give your children and grandchildren the opportunity to look back at where they, as well as where their ancestors, came from.

4. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great hobby.

5. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fun! Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an opportunity to get together with friends and talk, scrap and crop.

6. It can be a tool for emotional healing. You can grieve the death of a loved one by scrapbooking his or her life.

7. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s creative. The possibilities for materials you can use are endless: metal, plastic, buttons, beads, ribbon, cloth, wireâ&#x20AC;Ś.the list goes on. Being creative can give you a sense of pride and self-esteem, especially when others can see how beautiful your work is!

8. You can finally get rid of all of those shoe boxes in your closets or under your bed and get organized. Getting organized helps you to stay focused.

9. You can polish your photography skills! Learn new ways of taking memorable pictures that will capture the moment and tell the story.

10. Scrapbooks make fantastic personal gifts! A scrapbook doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be huge. A mini-album will do, and the person who gets it will appreciate how much time, thought and creativity you have put into their wonderful gift! A scrapbook is a gift of love.

Once you have decided to make your first scrapbook, it may be difficult to know where to begin. The scrapbooking aisles in the craft stores are daunting in their huge selection of materials.

In the book Scrapbooking: A Step-by-Step Guide to

Preserving Your Memories from Creating Keepsakes Magazine, the following eight steps are presented as a beginnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guide to getting started: 1. Sort your photos into themes or topics and select a set to work on.

2. Select two to three colors of acid-free paper or cardstock that will work well with your photos. . Pick one photo to be the main focus of your page.

4. If needed, crop your photos.

5. Select photos to mat. This is a good way to highlight the focal point photo.

6. Add journaling.

7. Add a few extras (such as stickers and embellishments).

8. Arrange all items on your pages and attach with adhesive.

While working through these steps, you will want to consider what type of album you want to create. A chronological scrapbook that follows your familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s events year

Family after year, expanding into more scrapbooks as the pages fill?

An album for a specific event or for a gift?

If you have 40+ years of pictures in boxes, you probably will not be planning to scrapbook every one of them; therefore, theme albums such as “Our Family Reunions” or “My Favorite Vacations” may be perfect projects to get you started. Also consider journaling, or narration, to go with your pictures.

Your pictures only tell half of the story; without the words to go with them, their meaning may become lost over the years. Use the “who, what, when, and where” style of journaling, but also incorporate the feelings, thoughts, and memories that these pictures bring to you.

There are other types of journaling that you may want to use, or be creative and invent your own.

Many new scrapbookers begin by cutting their photos into shapes with templates or decorative scissors. Be conservative when cropping your photos. You can always crop more, but it’s difficult or impossible to reconstruct a photo once it has been cropped.

Digital scrapbooking is a growing trend; creating your pages on a computer can save time and money. Because it takes a lot of the physical work out of scrapbooking (cropping and pasting, for example), it can be an excellent choice for someone with arthritis or other physical limitations (Source: scrapbooking.about.com.)

With the growing interest in scrapbooking, there are many, many resources available online, at your local public library, in craft stores, in bookstores, and through independent scrapbooking representatives, such as Creative Memories. Go ahead, get started. Your scrapbook will be a work of art to pass down through generations to come.

A Fitness Plan for Your Mind

Clearly there is a payoff for those who encourage and support fitness and health. There’s plenty of evidence to prove healthy people are more productive. But amid all the body building, it’s just as important to exercise your mind.

To keep your brain, as well as your body, in shape you should: • Read constantly, especially about how you can improve your skills, and then follow them through.

• Spend some time each day on the treadmill of routine activities. Getting them off your mind is like shedding unwanted pounds. You’ll feel better and the tougher, more complex tasks won’t seem so daunting.

• Meet or talk regularly with others to discuss new ideas and plans. You may need a few mentors and coaches to help you reach your goals.

• Treat decision-making as you’re an athlete trying to see how many sit-ups you can do. Start with a few that are easy, then work your way up to the more difficult ones.

In time, you’ll have the stamina to handle many decisions with little effort.

• View problem solving as an exercise bike that lets you gradually increase pedal pressure. Gets the kinks out with some straightaway easy problems, so you’ll be able to deal with the more uphill ones.

• Give your mind the same break you would your body when exhausted. Set aside a little time each day to let your brain bask in a mental sauna. This will prepare you for future hard exercise.

No matter how unpleasant your alarm may sound in the morning, you can be thankful that it only hurts your ears.

The early “alarm clocks” were much more painful. The first devices used to get people up were actually lit candles that medieval monks would stick between their toes. When the flames began nipping at their feet, they had no choice but to leap out of bed!

A clockmaker who loved to rise early is given credit for a less painful way of getting up, and he invented the first alarm clock. Levi Hutchins loved rising at 4 am…but in 1787 there were no early morning wake-up calls so he put his knowledge of clocks to work.

He devised a gear that would trip and strike a bell when the hour hand struck 4am, awakening him to enjoy a long and full day and for that matter, a long life. Hutchins lived until he was 94.

Pilates - Smart Exercise To Fight Aging

Joseph Pilates – the creator of the Pilates exercise system – once said that anyone who is stiff and out of shape at 30 is old, while someone who is supple and strong at 60 is still young.

As we get into middle age and beyond, it is vital to exercise your core strength, “the balanced development of the muscles that stabilize, align, and move the trunk of the body, especially the abdominals and muscles of the back.”

Strengthening your body’s core improves your flexibility; stiffness and lack of fluid movement are so often associated with an aging body. (Source: about.com) Core muscles protect your spine and build bone density and strength, which is necessary for the prevention of osteoporosis and back problems.

When it comes to safe exercise – Pilates is on the top of the list. Physiotherapists and doctors regularly recommend Pilates as one of the best exercise routines for overall general fitness and body awareness. What is Pilates, anyway?

Pilates is a conditioning method that focuses on core strength and stability.

Pilates exercises consist of low-impact flexibility, muscular strength and endurance movements.

It is named for its creator, Joseph Pilates, who developed the exercises to rehabilitate injured fellow internment camp detainees during WWI. “Joseph Pilates called his work ‘contrology, the comprehensive integration of body, mind and spirit.’” (Source: about.com).

Pilates exercises follow key principles and a prescribed sequence. The key principles are centering, control, flow, breath, precision, and concentration. Pilates exercises are done either on a floor mat or on exercise equipment that utilizes pulleys and resistance from the participant’s own body weight.

The reformer is probably the best-known piece of resistance equipment. Equipment is used more often in Pilates studios, while mat Pilates is generally what you will find available at a gym. Some instructors make use of stability balls, light hand weights, small balls and Pilates circles.

Health routines can be modified to any fitness level. A large percentage of Pilates students are seniors; it helps maintain mobility in the 5O+ years, which is key to good health and an active lifestyle.

Pilates is highly recommended for the treatment and prevention of back pain. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Pilates improves strength, flexibility and suppleness of the muscles of the hip and shoulder girdle.

The Pilates program also teaches awareness of movement habits that may stress the spine, and helps the patient change these habits to those that preserve neutral alignment.

Awareness of excessive tension and the use of proper focus helps the patient use the body efficiently.”

When choosing a Pilates class, keep the following points in mind: • • • • • • • •

Is the teacher a certified Pilates Instructor?

Does the teacher greet you before class?

Are the instructor’s directions clear?

Is he/she paying close attention to the students, and are you getting some individual attention?

Does the teacher seem professional, confident and knowledgeable? Does he/she give appropriate modifications to the exercises?

Did you enjoy the class? Does your body feel good?

Did the instructor check in with you to see how the class went for you?

Overall, did you feel motivated by this instructor?

Recipe - Warm Winter Slaw Ingredients: 4 cups thinly sliced or shredded red cabbage 1/3 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion strips 3 tablespoons cider or rice wine vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar mixed with above vinegar (optional) 2 teaspoons sesame oil 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt 1/3 cup toasted walnuts, coarsely chopped (optional) Directions: Spray a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray and heat over medium heat. Add coleslaw mix, cranberries, and red onion.

Cook 3 minutes, tossing mixture frequently, until it starts to soften. Be careful not to cook cabbage long enough to make it soggy.

Mix vinegar, sugar, and sesame oil. Stir in vinegar mixture and salt. Cook 1 minute longer, stirring, until evenly dressed.

Stir in walnuts, if desired. Serve warm.

Medicare Open Enrollment

by Pat Nemetch, Caring Solutions for Seniors and Families Happy New Year! With all the changes in Washington and Harrisburg, 2011 is already shaping up to be a very interesting time.

But before we close the book on 2010, I wanted to point out two developments that took place while many of you were doing your holiday shopping. Most importantly, seniors who depend on Medicare won a key victory in December when Congress voted to stop a drastic physician pay cut that would have driven more doctors out of the program.

With nearly all business on Capitol Hill at a standstill, AARP led a charge that pushed Congress to pass legislation that would help ensure seniors can keep seeing the doctors they count on in 2011.

This victory was fueled by AARP members who logged more than 100,000 calls and emails into Congress-- including many from our area -- urging that lawmakers to prevent the payment cut that would threaten seniors’ access to the doctors that care for them.

The city is using AARP’s Create the Good initiative as its starting point. Whether you have five minutes or five hours to volunteer, Create the Good can help as a catalyst, a connector and a go-to resource for those who want to make a difference in their community.

We are so fortunate to have such a wealth of experience and talent in Allentown that is looking to become more involved in the community. For those of you with time to give, I encourage you to find ways to join this new outreach campaign and make our area an even better place to live.

Finally, I wanted to point out a small housekeeping item. Recently, we have re-branded our company as Caring Solutions for Seniors and Families.

Rest assured, our name is all that’s changed. You can reach us the same way you always did, and our growing staff will continue to offer the great care management services you have come to expect from us.

If Congress had failed to act, doctors who treat Medicare patients would have received a 25% pay cut starting January 1, 2011.

Although this victory should give seniors peace of mind they can see their doctors next year, it doesn’t address the larger problem – replacing the failed payment system that will continue to drive doctors out of Medicare if it isn’t fixed.

Never underestimate the power of a single person.

AARP believes older Americans have earned their Medicare and deserve the security of knowing they can keep seeing the doctors they trust. That’s why in 2011, the organization will campaign for a long-term solution that give seniors the security of knowing they have access to doctors who provide high quality care.

Local Girl Scouts Help Meals on Wheels “Brighten the Holidays” for Senior Neighbors and Friends.

Saturday, December 4th was a busy day for eighteen girl scouts, along with their leaders (Lori Laubach, Heather Kromer, and Karen Williams of Troop 81 Slate Belt and Jill Koose, Tracy Brennan, and Patti Washbourne of Troop 8183 – Easton), who assisted the staff of Meals on Wheels of Northampton County in wrapping hundreds of holiday gifts for Meals on Wheels volunteers to distribute to over 750 of their senior and disabled clients this holiday season.

For the past ten years, Meals on Wheels of Northampton County has received overwhelming community support for their “Brighten the Holidays” campaign which collects holiday gifts (such as handknitted blankets, towels, toiletries, slipper socks, and department store gift cards) donated by local businesses, community organizations, churches and places of worship. Gift bags are then distributed to each Meals on Wheels client during the month of December, along with their daily meals.

Mildew The easiest way to help prevent mildew forming on for example shower curtains is to soak them in salt water before hanging them.

Eggs When slicing hard-boiled eggs, use a warm knife, this will prevent the egg yolk from crumbling.

Socks Wash socks in a laundry bag or pillowcase tied with string.

This prevents odd socks getting left in the machines and saves you having to sort them out after washing.

No Knocks When hammering a small nail into a wall, first place the nail between the teeth of a small comb. Then there’s no risk of hitting your finger by mistake.

In Northampton County alone, there are over 1,500 seniors and disabled adults who depend on Meals on Wheels for their meals each day. Many live alone and the visit of a volunteer is the only personal contact they have.

“Your gifts help to brighten their day and spread the spirit of giving for our senior clients and friends. It shows them you cares,” said Monica McCandless, Meals on Wheels of Northampton County Director of Clients, who directs the campaign.

After injuries cost him his college scholarship and a hopedfor future in professional football, a teacher Reynolds into trying out for a play he was producing, Outward Bound.

Her family was, as she described them, “dirt poor”. She described her family’s shortness of money in a number of her early songs, notably “Coat of Many Colors” which happens to be her favorite.

Reynolds won the 1956 Florida State Drama Award for his performance. The rest as they say is “history”. After some small parts in movies and theater he hit it big when he played Quint in Gunsmoke and never looked back.

Landing a Retirement Job

Whether it’s to stay active and engaged or because of financial need, more retirees and those aged 55+ are seeking jobs.

According the Bureau of Labor, that number is expected to rise. It looked at labor force participation of seniors and expects the number of workers between the ages of 65 and 74 to increase by 83.4 percent between 2006 and 2016. And the number of workers aged 75 and up is predicted to grow by 84.3 percent during that period.

Many will need to work because of skyrocketing health care costs and because of retirement fund losses, according to Art Koff, author of Invent Your Retirement: Resources for the Good Life and founder of www.Retiredbrains.com, a resource for retirement information and job leads.

And though the perception is that job opportunities are scarce, such is not the case, says Koff, who sees demand for experienced, reliable, knowledgeable workers interested in temporary jobs. He distinguishes temporary work from parttime work, explaining that temp work could entail consulting in your former profession, taking freelance assignments, or doing seasonal work, such as tax season jobs.

Companies are more apt to hire temps because they can find people with experience and knowledge without making a commitment to them. In addition, companies find that older workers are reliable and solid. Corina Kellam, founder of Life History Books, hires people to conduct interviews for family histories and says, “I need people to be punctual, polite, and considerate. I’m finding those traits are the most consistent in the older people I’m hiring.”

Koff ticks off an array of temporary job categories frequently filled by seniors, including: Consultants, Pharmacists, Nurses and healthcare professionals, Accountants, Chemists, Researchers, Call centers and telemarketing, Hotels concierges, Retail and food service Despite the available opportunities, there are obstacles to

finding work. Here are some strategies to make the process go more smoothly.

Network “People are hesitant to put themselves out there, but the best way to find a job is through networking,” says Koff.

That includes traditional methods of talking with friends, neighbors, and former colleagues, and tapping online venues, such as LinkedIn.com and Facebook. “Think about everyone you came in contact with during your working years. Catalog your connections to see if any of them can introduce you to someone working in a field you want to explore,” suggests Anya Korepanova, principal and founder of Dreamline Coach, San Francisco.

And don’t forget about college and university alumni associations, suggests Kerry Hennon (http://kerryHennon. com), author of What’s Next? Follow Your Passion and Find Your Dream Job. Many offer networking events, interviewing coaching, and resume consulting geared to helping alumni to reinvent themselves.

Temp Agencies Many companies facing a hiring freeze still need effective workers and often turn to temp agencies for help.

Korepanova suggests making a strong impression on and personal connections with recruiters who will work as your advocate.

Volunteer Some pooh-pooh the value of volunteering, but Hennon says that’s a mistake. Not only can you enjoy doing something you love, but it also can lead to new opportunities. She talks about one woman who volunteered at a garden (think New York Botanical Garden, for example) and it led her to start a landscape consulting business. Another volunteered at a homeless shelter. She’s now its executive director. “You just never know who you’ll meet,” says Hennon.

Resume Revamp Adjust your resume for the specific job, devoting the most space to areas where you have experience that matches the qualifications a company is seeking, suggests Koff. “Place a summary of experience at the top so the person reading it can say, ‘ooh, this matches my needs,’” he comments.

Carefully consider what to include and exclude. A job you did 35 years ago that has no direct connection to the position you’re applying for, for instance, may be worth eliminating.

And resume writing trends change quickly, so hiring a professional to tweak your resume may be worthwhile.

Technical Know-How Depending on the job you’re seeking, you may need to update your knowledge, particularly in technical fields like engineering or if a position requires heavy computer skills.

Community college classes can help you brush up on social media, mobile technology, and the latest programs relative to your field. “People who aren’t up to speed on technology are really behind the eight ball,” observes Hennon.

Ageism Yes, there’s age discrimination, but those seeking temp assignments may have a leg-up on younger competitors. Koff points to several advantages seniors have, including their flexibility and reliability and the fact that they don’t need benefits. In addition, seniors typically aren’t hunting for fulltime jobs and won’t abandon a temp job on short notice for full-time employment. “Companies will pay for expertise, so if you have a body of knowledge and experience, use those as selling points,” says Hennon.

Interviews Koff suggests doing some practice interviews for jobs that aren’t necessarily your top picks. You’ll gain experience, get a sense of questions that will be lobbed at you, and you’ll feel more confident and relaxed.

Be prepared to explain how your skills can solve a company’s challenges, instead of offering a laundry list of your successes.

And strike the right balance with your appearance. On one hand, it’s important not to try passing yourself off as someone who is 30 years younger. But, points out, Hennon, appearance is important, and she suggests not being bashful about donning stylish clothes and hip glasses. “And showing passion, energy, and enthusiasm are big assets. People can sense that inner vibe,” she comments.

Succeed By Taking Risks

by Art Villafane, Lifestyles over 50 Taking risks is difficult because it involves uncertainty.

Fear of the unknown tends to hold us back.

But because risk is one of the main paths to success, intelligent, calculating risk taking is worthwhile. Here are a few tips to bear in mind: Don’t focus only on the negative. Consider the possible benefits - you’ll never reach the top of the mountain if you’re always looking down.

Welcome fear. But don’t let it immobilize you. Use it to increase your alertness and further the chances that your risk taking will meet with success. Fear should act as a helpful warning, not a barrier.

Weigh up the odds. It doesn’t make sense to risk a lot for a small potential gain. Ask yourself the following: “Exactly how much am I likely to gain? What are the realistic chances of success? What could I lose, either by going ahead or standing still?”

Get the facts. The more you know about a situation, the better you can evaluate the risks involved. Taking a risk does not mean making a blind leap - intelligent risk taking is based on thorough analysis, planning and research.

Examine the worst case scenario. Often you’ll find that it’s not as bad as first thought. For example, if you’re hesitant about trying a potentially better way of doing your job, because you feel your job will be at risk if it backfires, sit down and reconsider. Talk it over with a trusted colleague, friend or employer. They may be able to give you a differing, more realistic perspective.

Bet on yourself. Risk in business should not be like going to the race track and betting on a horse. In most of the risks you take, your own hard work, initiative and sheer determination will naturally play a crucial role in the outcome.

Remembering Family

As I read accounts of the “good old days” it occurs to me that though most people can relate in some degree to places and things written about and grasp that commonality that draws us together as a generation, the thing that sets each person apart across the generations and makes them unique is family.

Good or bad, everyone has a particular story to tell.

Fortunately, even if that story is somewhat embarrassing, if you wait until you’ve got 70 or 80 years between you and it, it can’t affect you in an adverse way; people just say, “What a hoot her relatives are” and you’re pretty much in the clear.

Pity I didn’t grasp that philosophy earlier in my life; I could have enjoyed my folks for who and what they were so much sooner.

I used to be terribly embarrassed by my family and their shenanigans. My Welsh mother reveled in the tales of her parents and grandparents, and I heard them over and over until they were etched in my brain like a really bad song. My father, being taciturn in nature, didn’t have to bother, because mom delighted in sharing his somewhat dubious family history with me also. As a teenager, I wondered how I could have all these weird people not just on the distaff side, but from dad, too. I never discussed this with my friends. How do you ask, “Is your family really different, or is it just mine?”

I was afraid of the answer.

While my friends were tucked in at night and being read “Goodnight Moon” or “Prayers For Children,” I was tucked in (by a very loving mother, lest you get the wrong impression about her) and told about Granddad hiding the homemade from the “revenuers”.

That particular story had made a real impression on mom, no doubt, because when the revenuers came knocking, the most logical place to hide the jugs was in her bed up and down her sides. What self-respecting internal agent would go bursting into a 10-year-old’s bedroom and search a sleeping child? Apparently it didn’t harm my mother any; she was pretty well adjusted as an adult and got the greatest kick out of telling that particular tale.

A tomboy from the moment she was born in the little village of Glendon, outside of Easton, my maternal grandmother and her 14 siblings were raised in a threebedroom row home. Her father, my great grandfather, decided relatively early that work wasn’t working for him; he needed to expand his mind. Consequently, he spent the last

25 years or so of his rather short life sitting in their parlor by the window, reading. Their money to live on came from each of the children getting jobs as soon as they were old enough to help out. The girls, understandably, got married way too early, but the boys who survived to adulthood all did pretty well for themselves, except for the two or three who were a great embarrassment to their strict Liverpudlian parents.

Those, of course, were the ones mom told about with great glee. I can still picture her, with tears of laughter in her eyes relating about great uncles Harry and Ralph and the horse on the back porch or great uncle Jim and the insects in the blocks of ice or tipped over outhouses.

So take a moment during this month of resolutions to be genuinely thankful for the bloodline you’ve inherited.

Those people who looked so kooky when you were 15 and who wanted to make you sink through the floor at 17 end up being what you need to and must share with the next generations when you’re 65.

Taking Care of Blue Jeans They used to come in basic blue and were considered casual wear only. Now they’re available in many colors, styles and types – and are identified with the latest in fashion. With so many jeans now available, is it any wonder that jean manufacturers are bombarded with “how do I take care of my jeans” questions? With the introduction of so many variations of blue jeans, taking care of them can get complicated. The following steps are therefore recommended: • • • • • • • • •

Wash dark clothing separately Use hot water Limit a wash load to 3 pairs of jeans Use the recommended amount of powder To fade your jeans, repeated washing in hot water with detergent is the only recommended method Don’t soak your new jeans. Both soaking and cold water can cause the dye to transfer to the surface of your washing machine To avoid streaking, creasing and wrinkling, use a fabric softener and remove from dryer promptly Iron your jeans flat – a center crease will leave a white crease down the front on the legs Dry cleaning jeans are not necessary!

Identity Theft

I work in Cubicle Land, a place as indistinguishable from every other corporate maze as those cookie cutter homes of the suburban ’50s. It seems the only thing that distinguishes one person from another is his personal ringtone.

I wonder what would happen if characters from the classic children’s stories had a reunion. How would you tell the families apart? You have Rabbit, Mr. Rabbit, Brer Rabbit, Peter Rabbit, and Eddie Rabbitt. Our Advent calendar features Mr. Mouse, Mrs. Mouse, Pastor Mouse, etc.

How nondescript! What if we were named Mr. Human, Mrs. Human, Human, Jr., Joe Human, Mary Human, and Dr. Human?

Identity is important to us. One fear that hangs on the coattails of technology is identity theft. Criminals can steal our personal information and impersonate us for evil ends.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery until it becomes the sincerest form of forgery. Having one’s identity stolen is a deep invasion of privacy; it can make one feel very small and vulnerable. We can feel the same when we ponder the vast number of people in our company, most of whom we don’t know, and the billions of people in the world that don’t know us. One ad for an ID theft protection company shouts, “It’s MY identity! No one is going to take it!” It’s easy to feel threatened.

Thankfully, there is One who can be trusted to safeguard our identity and add value to our life. As I visit local churches, I am struck by the number of believers in different communities. The hundreds of people I encounter are scattered throughout their neighborhoods like salt on popcorn. I don’t know them, the world doesn’t recognize them by their faces, but it’s comforting to know they are out there and we’re not alone. They come in different genders, colors, occupations, educational and economic brackets, sizes, shapes, outfits, cars, and denominations, but they are all one in Christ. There is One Who knows they are there and is watching over them.

Each of us is unique, with distinctive features and lives: “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:16). We are all equal before God: “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). God knows and values every detail of

our life: “And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:30, 31). In heaven and beyond, we will maintain individual identities: “I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it” (Revelation 2:17).

We may blend into the vast sea of humanity like threads in a sweater but God sees us as the individuals He made us to be. To the nondescript, unnamed, outcast thief on the cross, Jesus, in throes of unimaginable agony, said, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). We can say with Job, “But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold” (Job 23:10).

God knew us, knows us, and will know us in intimate detail. “He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels” (Revelation 3:5). Our identity is safe with God!

Smarter, Safer Way to Exercise

Yoga is for everyone. Practicing yoga does not require mastering the intricate positions poses that you see on the cover of yoga magazines. It can be adapted to any fitness level.

“There are modifications to many poses that can be brought to the introductory level,” says 24/7 Fitness yoga instructor Pat Brown.

According to yoga philosophy, it’s the flexibility of the spine, not the number of years, that determines a person’s age.”

The following are some of the anti-aging effects of yoga, according to Dr. Paul Galbraith, author of Reversing Aging: Yoga slows down the aging process by • giving elasticity to the spine • firming up the skin • removing tension from the body • strengthening the abdominal muscles • improving the tone of flabby arm muscles • correcting poor posture • preventing dowager’s hump • heightening mental prowess • affecting all the important determinants of a long life: the brain, glands, spine and internal organs • increasing resistance to disease • rejuvenating the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal and sex glands.

This produces a feeling of well-being, prevents premature aging and extends sexual virility well into old age • improving vision and hearing • preventing facial wrinkles • helping you to feel more confident, enthusiastic and generally optimistic, allowing you to become more creative.

Many people think that yoga is just stretching. But while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body by developing both strength and flexibility. According to Brown, “Yoga is a way to treat the body fully -- a full complement of mind, body, and breath -- to improve all your body systems. It’s also a way to exercise your balance, which is critical when you’re over 50.”

Yoga practice involves performing poses, or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. The poses remain the

same, but the approach to them varies depending on the tradition in which the teacher has trained.

The poses can be done quickly in succession, creating heat in the body through movement (vinyasa-style yoga) or more slowly to increase stamina and perfect the alignment of the pose (hatha-style). Typically, a yoga class taught at a gym will focus on the purely physical benefits of yoga, while classes at some yoga studios may include a spiritual approach.

Practicing yoga will benefit you physically by increasing your flexibility, strength and muscle tone; helping to prevent pain and improve your breathing. As Brown says, “When you change the way you breathe, you change your life.”

The mental benefits include calmness and stress reduction.

Yoga requires intense concentration on what your body is doing and introduces meditation techniques, such as being conscious of how you breathe and disengaging from your

Yoga is an ideal type of exercise for those over 50 as long as it is done safely. It can be done at home but is best introduced in a class setting with supervision. A qualified instructor is indispensable in helping you to maximize your workout and prevent injury.

There is a yoga style for everyone; it is important to choose the right style and level for your fitness level. Yoga has become very popular in recent years, and there is a wide variety of classes to choose from in the Lehigh Valley, from power yoga to chair yoga to senior yoga. Chair yoga might be the best choice for someone with greater physical limitations, while power yoga is better suited for someone who is in average or good condition.

Most importantly, when choosing a yoga class, make sure the instructor is certified by the Yoga Alliance®, the national education and support organization for yoga in the United States. Always consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program.
