From the Editor Summer is in full swing and I could not be happier. I was looking forward to Spring, but I blinked and it was gone!

Nonetheless we should be getting out and enjoying the Lehigh Valley.

To that end we have a number of articles on things to do. One is our usual “Things to Do With Grandkids”, and we added another article with some special events around the Valley in June. Additionally since Father’s Day is this month we added a couple of interesting and fun activities to do with Dad. We also have a listing of some of the free music concerts throughout the Valley.

Check some or all of them and have a blast.

With all the walking you might do during the summer we have an article on taking care of your feet. Improper shoes can make a pleasant walk become a painful chore. Our article will give you good tips on protecting your feet.

Another caution during the summer is protecting your skin. Fair-skinned people are especially vulnerable to skin cancer. Dr. Richard McClain wrote an article explaining some of the warning signs. Early detection is your best defense. His article gives you an in-depth understanding of what to look for on your skin.

We have not forgotten you golfers. We have included a listing of local golf courses and the rates for seniors; so get out there and get in some rounds. It will do your body and your mind good - just do not throw any golf clubs into the water.

Oh My Achin’ Feet!

Our feet are something we only think about when they hurt -- when we need new shoes, or in the summer, when more of them show. But how often do you think about the importance of your feet and how you use them contributes to your overall health and well being?

Understanding the importance of feet was always something I knew in theory – now I know in reality! I have been experiencing big toe joint problems for about two months, and its effects have been staggering (no pun intended!). Being unable to bear weight on the big toe has thrown my gait off, forcing me to put weight on the outside of my foot. Not only does the outside of my foot hurt, but also my hips, back and shoulders hurt. Additionally, the opposite foot hurts, as do the calf and thigh muscles. WOW – all from not being able to walk correctly!

When your gait shifts just a bit, undue stress and misuse of leg muscles occur. Not all muscles are equal: Some are used for stability, some for helping other muscles, some for posture, and some for major movement.

When your gravity lines shift, the stabilizing muscles become the major movers, causing other muscles throughout your body to tighten or loosen and be used in ways THEY are not supposed to be used. This creates body-wide involvement, with your muscles operating inefficiently in ways they were not designed to, pulling joints off-center. Leave this situation alone long enough and you will experience joint degeneration.

Let’s see why that would be.

Think about how much weight they bear. Think about the task they need to perform. They are, in themselves, perfectly formed with 3 arches to support normal body weight for your height, proper posture and walking. The problem is, we do not use our feet correctly.

Take a few moments and analyze your walking technique. Are your feet hip-width apart (a wide base is a steady base)? Are your toes pointed forward – or are they pointed outward/ inward? Do you hit the ground with your heel, then the ball, and finally roll off from your toes? Try practicing. At first you may experience awkwardness and soreness while your body realigns itself‌but in the end, you will be the healthier for it.

Meal Delivery Deliver nutritious meals along with a friendly smile to homebound neighbors.

Apprise Counselor Receive training to help consumers (and their families or caregivers) make the right choices to meet their health care needs. Work one on one with clients during scheduled appointments.

Help Alleviate Hunger Assistance is needed in many area Food Pantries and Soup Kitchens. Also, once each month help is needed at Second Harvest’s Warehouse off of Rt. 512 packing SUNshine boxes for seniors and Buddy Packs for area students.

Grocery Shopper Shop for someone who can’t get to the grocery store for healthy foods or accompany someone to and through the grocery store once or twice per month.

Special Events Assistant Agencies need help when they put on special programs or events. This is a great way to meet people who share your interests and compassion while helping local agencies meet their goals.

Ombudsman Once a month visit with residents of a long-term care facility close to your home. Listen to concerns on a personto-person basis. Concerns could be about quality of care or simple questions concerning Residents’ Rights.

Special Visitor/ Guest Speaker Do you have a hobby, collection or skill you can share with others? Add some extra special cheer by sharing your interests or talents with residents of adult day programs, personal care or nursing homes.

Senior Medicare Patrol Presenters Speak to senior groups to inform them about Medicare Fraud – how to recognize it and protect themselves from it. Detect.

Protect. Report. All presentation materials, handouts, and training provided.

Clerks Needed in Gift & Thrift Shops Help with stocking, display, cashier and customer service duties.

Help Homeless and Struggling Veterans On the last Saturday of each month help is needed at our local Stand Down in Bethlehem. If you can’t come in person to help, perhaps you can organize a collection of needed items within your senior club or group.

New Programs for Caregivers’ Peace of Mind

Project Lifesaver International is the nationally recognized leader in providing training and technology to both first responders and caregivers to help protect and when necessary quickly locate and rescue individuals with cognitive disorders who are prone to the life threatening behavior of wandering, including Alzheimer’s, Autism, and Down syndrome.

Project Lifesaver released PAL, the newest and most effective protect and locate solution designed specifically to reduce the potential of a life threatening wandering episode.

PAL differs from most other protect and locate devices in that it is a functioning sports watch that is equipped with GPS and cellular locating technology.

PAL also includes an RF (Radio Frequency) “Safe Zone”.

The RF “Safe Zone” allows the caregiver to create an electronic perimeter around the individual wearing the watch.

When the RF “Safe Zone” is breached the caregiver will hear an alarm and be able to stop the wandering event before it can ever happen. For the caregiver’s convenience, PAL also has an internet portal available that is accessible worldwide from any PC or smart phone and allows for real time tracking with regular location updates. Any of these events will update the internet portal and send an e-mail alert and/or a text message to the caregiver.

Freedom4Kids uses the same technology combination of GPS, GSM and an RF “safe zone”. Freedom4Kids offers the same device and internet applications as PAL, but with modifications that make it more effective and appropriate for a young person. The first adjustment we made to the Kids version is to give the caregiver the option to disable the panic button on the watch from the portable receiver. This important modification was made in order to eliminate false alarms if the watch is being worn by a child who might tend to fidget with the device. Second, it has a higher water resistance and can be worn showering and in the pool but not submerged for long periods of time. Third, Freedom4Kids is available in three colors black, blue, and purple.

Metabolism begins to slow at age 40, so seniors require fewer calories than they did when they were younger. Coupled with the reduced activity levels of most seniors, reduced calorie needs can require some significant diet changes to maintain a healthy weight.

According to the National Institute of Aging, women 50 and older should consume 1,600 - 2,000 calories per day, while men 50 and older should consume 2,000 - 2,800, depending on activity level. Reduced metabolism results in lower levels of stomach acid so seniors are not able to digest vitamins and minerals as effectively. The senses become less sensitive so foods sometimes taste differently than they did earlier in life.

A Balanced Diet for Seniors Due to these natural changes seniors must get the nutrients they need through a smaller amount of food.

Following simple guidelines can help make every calorie count: Choosing a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables rather than sticking to just a few favorites helps seniors gain the greatest nutritional benefits from their servings. Seniors should consume 1 1/2 to 2 servings of fruits and 2 to 3 1/2 servings of vegetables each day.

Seniors should keep bones strong with 1,200 milligrams of calcium each day. Dairy products, including milk, yogurt and cheese are great sources of calcium. Non-dairy sources include almonds, broccoli, kale and tofu.

Keep the brain sharp with Omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats have been linked to a reduced risk for Alzheimer’s. For optimal health, seniors should consume 3-4 servings of fish, nuts and other foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids each week.

Fiber-rich whole grains can improve digestion, reduce risk of coronary heart disease and help the body absorb important nutrients. Seniors should eat 6-7 ounces of grains each day; a slice of bread is one ounce.

Seniors should consume 1 gram of protein each day for every 2 pounds they weigh to maintain energy levels.

Seniors may not feel as thirsty as they felt earlier in life, but they still need just as much water. Seniors should drink several large glasses of water throughout the day and not wait until he or she feels thirsty.

Seniors benefit by adding vitamins and other supplements to their diets and should talk to their doctors to learn about which may help them stay healthy.

Smart Cooking Starting with healthy raw foods is the first step, but how foods are cooked affects their nutritional benefits too.

Overcome common cooking challenges for seniors and get more from each meal by cooking smarter: Although it’s important for seniors to reduce their sodium intake to prevent high blood pressure and other health conditions, seniors also have a reduced sense of taste. Stave off the impulse to douse meals in salt by cooking with more herbs and spices to keep meals flavorful.

When cooking vegetables, opt to steam or sauté them in olive oil. Unlike butter, olive oil will keep bad cholesterols low and good cholesterols high. Steaming and sautéing preserve the most health benefits in veggies; boiling will deplete them of nutrients.

It can take a while to get used to major changes in eating habits for seniors who have eaten a particular diet their whole lives. Taking small steps gradually to make healthier choices can have a more lasting impact than overhauling their entire diet at once.

Understanding Hospice

We all know the numbers 9-1-1. We know how the 911 dispatcher can coordinate police, fire, and rescue services in life and death situations. We know to dial 911 just in case, but we all dread the idea of needing to make that call to save ourselves or a loved one. Just like no one ever wants to dial 911, few seek to learn about hospice, and few know much about it.

The reality is that both patients and those around them benefit from hospice. Hospice is defined as health-care service for the terminally ill that emphasizes pain control and emotional support for the patient and family, typically refraining from taking extraordinary measures to prolong life. For example, a patient may battle a disease, and at some point in the treatment of the disease the medical team determines that the disease will take the patient’s life within six months. At that point, the medical team changes its strategy from battling the disease to focusing on the patient’s comfort and enjoyment of life.

Hospice is an entitlement program under Medicare for those 65 and older who are diagnosed with a terminal illness and given six months to live. Hospice services are available for all ages, but Medicare only pays for treatment of those 65 and older. For those younger than 65, many health care plans cover varying forms of hospice services.

People with end-stage dementia, cardiac, lung or renal disease should consider hospice care. Each person is evaluated individually and care is directed towards the patient’s specific needs. Hospice care is not just for the final days of life. Hospice care is of importance for the last six months of life to provide a time of preparation for the patient and their loved ones, empowerment, comfort and transition from life to death.

When the attending physician determines that hospice care is necessary, the physician, patient, family, and hospice team discuss and lay out a care plan for the patient to get the most out of his remaining time. This includes the patients’ goals for the end of life. The team includes nurses, case managers, social workers, bereavement counselors, chaplains, physical therapists, speech therapists, and occupational therapists.

Care is given to the hospice patient as needed and can be provided anywhere, but most commonly in a nursing facility, assisted living facility, or at home. Because many prefer to remain at home, hospice care in the home is

often encouraged so that the patient can be the happiest and most comfortable.

It is important to know about hospice services. Some count it a privilege to spend their last days in comfort and care, surrounded by loved ones.

10 Common Words You Might Be Mispronouncing 1. Kibosh: Let’s put the kibosh, pronounced “KYbosh,” on saying this word like “kuh-BOSH.” 2. Celtic: An initial hard (k) sound is the standard, but linguists say the (s) sound emerged as far back as the 17th century. Winds of Change

When I work on an article or devotional, I look up certain topics and search for ideas on the internet. When I looked up “Winds of change,” I found dozens of songs, books, quotations, bands, albums, magazines, websites, and other relevant stuff. It was too overwhelming, so I think I’ll just stick with the bible for this one!

When one speaks of “winds of change,” the idea is that some overpowering power or trend is sweeping across the land, culture or society.

In the bible, the words for “wind” are, in Hebrew, “ruach,” and, in Greek, “pneuma,” meaning “breath,” “spirit” or “wind,” depending on the context.

As anyone who has weathered a storm can say, winds can be extremely powerful. To a property owner, they can be destructive. To a sailor, strong winds can be a blessing; it all depends on the context.

The Lord God has powerful breath, and I don’t mean heavenly halitosis. It is compared to wind in many verses that display his power for giving and taking life. The breath of God even controls the weather: “By the breath of God ice is given, and the broad waters are frozen fast” (Job 37:10).

From the very beginning, the breath of God was lifegiving: “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host” (Psalm 33:6). “Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the

breath of life, and the man became a living creature” (Genesis 2:7).

It is the breath of God that sustains us: “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life” (Job 33:4).

The wind—or breath—of God changes death to life and life to death.

Just a puff from God restores life: “Then he said to me [speaking of the dry bones of Israel], ‘Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live’” (Ezekiel 37:9).

The martyred prophets of the great tribulation have this hope: “But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them” (Revelation 11:11).

Not only does the breath of God give life, but it gives new life: “And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’” (John 20:22). This new life is found and sustained by the Word of God: “All Scripture is breathed out by

God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

The power of God’s judgement gives the term “blown away” new meaning: “As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same.

By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed” (Job 4:8-9). “And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming” (2 Thessalonians 2:8).

Just like a powerful wind, the breath of God can bring misery or momentum.

If you ignore the Word of God that gives life, the wind of God brings condemnation. When you listen to the bible and place your faith in Jesus as your shelter (Isaiah 25:4; John 3:8), the wind of his spirit—the wind of change—will save you and propel you through life on a straight course.

The winds of change blow in your heart and conscience. Trying to silence them is useless. As a wise mariner once said, “Don’t try to change the wind — change the sails.”

Everyone has something to offer.

Sometimes it’s a skill or talent. Sometimes it’s a word of wisdom or an extra hand. Sometimes the smallest act of kindness can make the biggest difference.

Tis the Season - Recognizing and Treating Skin Cancer

cancers may require extensive stitching, skin grafting, or a rearrangement of the skin called a “flap.”

Basal cell carcinoma presents in many different ways.

Most commonly, it begins as a flat pink lesion, a pink or pearly-appearing nodule on the skin, or as a sore that does not heal. Sometimes it can present as a new hard lump on the skin or look like a scar with poorly defined edges. On close examination, BCCs often contain tiny dilated blood vessels known as telangiectasias. BCC invariably grows over time, but may grow very slowly. BCC is found most commonly on parts of the body that receive the most sun, such as the face, neck, and shoulders, but occur anywhere on the body.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma Skin cancer is epidemic in the United States, with approximately 1 in 5 Americans expected to develop it.

Approximately 3.6 million skin cancers are diagnosed each year in this country, and 15,000 to 20,000 deaths are attributed to skin cancer. Most of these deaths are caused by melanoma, but even the more common and “less aggressive” skin cancers can lead to disability or death if left untreated.

Squamous cell carcinoma can also have several different presentations. It most often presents as a pink or reddish scaly patch, a rough-feeling lump on the skin, or a domeshaped nodule. Like BCC, SCC can present as a sore or a scab that will not heal. Also like BCC, SCC is most common on sun-exposed areas of the body, but may occur anywhere.

While SCC is usually slow-growing, it can also grow very rapidly in some cases. SCC may be sensitive to touch or

Those with a history of skin cancer, or risk factors such as very fair skin, history of many sunburns, or large number of moles should be screened annually with a board-certified dermatologist. In addition, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends that everyone be able to perform self-skin checks and know the warning signs for skin cancer.

In this article, we will discuss the basic features of common skin cancers and how to identify them.

The most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma. While other types of skin cancer do exist, they are very rare.

Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are often referred to collectively as “non-melanoma skin cancer” because they have many features in common and require only local treatment in the vast majority of cases. When caught early, these skin cancers can sometimes be treated with a local scraping procedure or small surgical removal.

In some cases, early BCC or SCC can even be treated with a topical cream. When these skin cancers become more advanced or occur on sensitive locations such as the nose, ears, or eyelids, they require more complex surgery. Such skin

painful, but may be asymptomatic; small and early lesions are more likely to have no symptoms at all.

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer that I see on a regular basis, and also the least common. Melanoma accounts for approximately 2% of skin cancer diagnoses, but causes as much as 75% of skin cancer related death. The pneumonic “ABCDE” describes many of the warning signs for melanoma. “A” stands for asymmetry – one half of the mole is different than the other half. “B” stands for border – melanoma often has an irregular or poorly defined border.

“C” is for color – moles that contain more than one color should be evaluated. “D” is for diameter – melanomas are usually bigger than the size of a pencil eraser, but can also be smaller. “E” is for evolution – any mole that is changing should be promptly evaluated.

Beyond the ABCDEs of melanoma, patients should be aware of the “ugly duckling sign;” a mole that looks nothing like the other moles on your body is suspicious to your dermatologist. Finally, any mole that bleeds or persistently itches should be evaluated.
