Smile, It’s Your Best Feature

From the Editor Yes, that is me on the front cover. It was my first tandem sky dive and it was thrilling beyond words. I write about it in our article entitled “Jumping Out of Your Comfort Zone”. I believe it is important to get out of your routines from time to time and try something new and different. It does not have to be as extreme as jumping out of a plane, but it should be something that stretches you physically, mentally or emotionally.

Our article on Meals on Wheels is another way that shows how you can stretch yourself - volunteering to help those in need. Check out our article on Self Care. It can help you to make positive changes for your health. The article on Celiac disease is another in our continuing emphasis on health.

As we slowly start the end of the summer, get out and take advantage of the Valley. Come on over to the Allentown Fair. Yes, it can get a bit crowded, but it is still a nice way to spend time wandering around with the family.

Look for me - I’ll be the one in a T-shirt and shorts :).

Self-Care - A New Way of Looking at Your Body

Slow, rhythmic breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth help the body release the stress and normalize blood flow and hormonal levels 3. Toxins: Tobacco, alcohol and drugs destroy cells in the body. In fact the largest contributor to free radical damage of the cells and DNA is tobacco and has been linked strongly to heart disease and cancer. Regular participation in any of these activities will result in longterm damage to the body and the need for health care services. Self Care recognizes the potentially harmful effects of these toxins and chooses instead to pursue a lifestyle free of toxins.

4. Activity: Every day we have a choice to move or sit. Our culture promotes sitting; sitting at a table, at your the desk, in the car, on the couch. Self Care recognizes your body’s need to move for health and seeks opportunities during the day to walk the stairs, wall sit, work on posture, and schedule in time for dedicated exercise and stretching. A simple action might include doing a wall sit while on the phone to strengthen your legs or sitting on the floor while watching TV to do push ups, sit ups and stretch. Redeem the time each day to move your body.

5. Celebrate Success: Self Care recognizes the physical and financial rewards of good health and celebrates the success. The money that might have been spent on copays, deductibles, procedures or lost work days can be reallocated to a long anticipated vacation, wonderful healthy meal catered into your home for friends and family or simply saved for another day. The celebration will help to solidify the tangible benefits of your decision and make any perceived sacrifices worthwhile. A healthy lifestyle opens wide the doors of opportunity, enjoy.

Congratulations on your decision to take control of your health destiny. Remember, your body is the vehicle that will carry you through life, and you don’t get to trade it in after 50,000 miles! A healthy body will provide you with abundant opportunities and adventures that are impossible with a failing body. But, it all begins with the “self care” decisions that you will make today. How Celiac Disease Can Affect Your Health

As we peruse the aisles of the supermarket these days, or the menus in our favorite restaurants, we see the term “gluten free” everywhere. What exactly does “gluten free” mean, and why is it important? Gluten is a protein found in foods containing wheat, barley, rye and oats; these include bread, pasta, cookies, pizza crust, cereals, salad dressings, ice creams, sauces, and many other processed foods. Gluten triggers an immune response in people with celiac disease, also known as gluten intolerance.

Celiac disease is a growing health concern in the United States and in Europe. According to a recent study, one percent of non-Hispanic whites in the U.S. -- close to two million Americans -- have celiac disease, but most are not aware they suffer from it.

When people with celiac disease eat foods with gluten, it can cause inflammation and damage to the small intestine, which can result in failure to absorb certain nutrients. Over time, this can lead to vitamin deficiencies that deprive the brain, peripheral nervous system, bones, liver and other organs of vital nourishment.

Celiac is hard to diagnose because it can cause such a wide array of symptoms. There are no typical signs of celiac, but because it is a gastro-intestinal disorder, it often causes diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain. Celiac can also cause less obvious symptoms, such as irritability or depression, anemia, joint pain, muscle cramps, skin rash, mouth sores or tingling in the legs and feet, osteoporosis in older adults and stunted growth in children. It can lay dormant and strike at any age. Celiac is more likely to develop in those with type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease, Down syndrome, and colitis. Left untreated, celiac disease sufferers are more likely to develop certain cancers and other diseases.

Some people suffer a less severe intolerance to gluten, called gluten sensitivity. “Unlike celiac disease, gluten sensitivity walks a blurry diagnostic line. There’s no definitive way to diagnose the condition, like a blood test.

The condition is also not associated with as serious side effects and doesn’t have the same genetic markers as celiac disease,” according to a report by ABC News, February 2012.

Nonetheless, the treatment is the same: a gluten free diet.

We talked with Nancy, an individual who has been living with celiac disease for several years. Her experience illustrates how gluten intolerance can alter one’s lifestyle and how it can be managed.

Nancy, 53, was diagnosed with celiac in 2008. She attributes the onset of her celiac symptoms to a period of major stress: Her mother passed away in January 2004, and three weeks later her husband lost his job.

Nancy had experienced stomach discomfort, bloating and frequent bowel movements since 2004 and was initially tested for celiac, with negative results, in 2006. She ignored these signs for a couple of years until her older brother was diagnosed with celiac. Her symptoms continued getting better or worse, depending on her diet, but she didn’t see the correlation at the time. “Things got really dreadful in January 2008 after a Christmas filled with cookies and all things gluten (spent in the Lehigh Valley with my husband’s family – I do love my mother-in-law’s Christmas baking!). My energy levels plummeted, as did my weight. I had done a little research on celiac and discovered that the blood test I had taken had a 30% false negative rate depending on how much gluten was present in my system at the time, so for the second test I ate gluten at every meal all week,” Nancy told us.

Nancy is director of sales and client services for a firm which provides services to attorneys and lenders nationwide.

Her responsibilities entail a large amount of travel. Asked how her diagnosis has changed her lifestyle, Nancy responds, “I was pretty happy to discover what was wrong and what to do about it, so in all honesty it changed my lifestyle quite positively. The worst I can say is that I miss the ease with which I used to approach food. When I am eating away from home, I try to do research before I go to determine how gluten-free-friendly a restaurant is. If that’s not possible, I’ve learned to ask a few questions based on the food type.”

And while autumn officially won’t arrive until September 22, most of us have already shifted into fall mode. After all, school is back in session and the pace of the everyday life is quickly picking up speed again.

That means we’ve begun the final countdown to the November election, where issues affecting older adults are sure to take center stage.

AARP’s You’ve Earned a Say is taking the conversation about Medicare and Social Security out from behind closed doors in Washington. The fact is, you’ve paid into Medicare and Social Security and you’ve earned a voice in the debate about the future of these programs.

More than a million people across the country have taken the first of three You’ve Earned a Say questionnaires, including 32,084 right here in Pennsylvania. Here’s what you all had to say.

When it comes to changes being made to Social Security and Medicare in Washington, 43% want to make their voices heard, 48% want to make their voices heard but don’t think it will make any difference and 7% aren’t interested in being involved.

On Social Security, 29% of those surveyed believe the program is okay as is, 26% believe it needs minor changes, 23% said it needs major changes and 19% believe it is a state of crisis.

For Medicare, 25% said Medicare is okay as it is, 28% believe it needs minor changes, 30% think the program needs major changes and 16% believe Medicare is in state of crisis.

When asked if you expect to get more back from Medicare and Social Security than you have contributed, 29% said they expected to receive more, 27% believed they would receive less and 43% said they expected it to remain about the same.

When it comes to the future of Medicare and Social Security, 34% of those surveyed believe more funding will be needed to maintain the same benefits, 12% think benefits will be reduced, 40% believe either choice is possible and 12% think another solution will be necessary.

Jumping Out of Your Comfort Zone

“Are you crazy? Why would you jump out of a perfectly good airplane? Weren’t you afraid?”

Those are just some of the questions I got after I told everyone I had skydived.

Yes, I, your Lifestyles over 50 editor, did jump out of a plane – and did he have the ride of his life!! I’ve wanted to skydive for as long as I can remember. Finally, this year my friend, Jeff, and I said “Let’s do it”. So off we went to dive the sky.

With our small plane refueled, five of us went up with our instructors. We sat on a small bench parallel with the fuselage. As we taxied and started our ascent, Rob busied himself with making sure he and I were securely attached.

There is a small airport near Quakertown that specializes in tandem skydiving. Tandem skydiving is where you are strapped to an experienced and trained skydiver. Together you jump out of the airplane. After free falling for a few thousand feet the instructor pulls the cord to deploy the parachute and you slowly glide back down to the ground.

At 14,000 feet the plane leveled off. I must admit that, although I was very excited about this adventure, I got a little anxious because there was no turning back now. But the anxiousness is part of the thrill of skydiving. When my turn came, I waddled to the open door of the plane, planted my feet and Rob gently pushed us out into the sky.

I made my reservation back in May for a ride in late July.

Those weeks were filled with anxious excitement. When the day arrived Jeff and I arrived at the airport around 8:30 in the morning. We filled out the appropriate paperwork and sat for a short video on what we would be doing in our dive. There isn’t much to learn as the process is rather simple: go up in plane, get strapped in, jump out of plane, then land – simple.

What a rush! My first thought was that it was a bit chilly at 14,000, but just as quickly I turned my attention to the landscape below me. I realized that I was flying through the air like a bird. The air does rush up on you rather quickly and you can feel your face and hair flapping like crazy in the air.

Normally you are taken up to 10,000 feet and jump out.

At 5,000 the parachute is deployed and you gently come down to the ground. For an extra $10 you can go up an additional 4,000 feet so that you free fall for a total of 9,000 feet. Of course we took that option!

We spun around a few times in mid-air and at 5,000 feet Rob pulled the chord. I experienced a soft bounce as the chute fully deployed. We then began our slow descent. Rob swung us back and forth in lazy arcs that made me feel even more like I was flying like a bird. As we neared our landing spot Rob reminded me to stretch my legs out at 90 degrees and we came to a smooth landing just a couple of hundred yards from where we started. The smile on my face could not have been bigger.

Sky diving was a big item on my bucket list and, although it took a long time before I was able to check it off my list, it was well worth the wait. Will I do it again? You bet! My buddy, Jeff, and I agreed to do it at least once a year from now on.

Retired Medicare Beneficiaries Teach Their Peers About Fraud

Money lost to fraud means increased premiums for beneficiaries, increased taxes for all of us, and less money available for programs that assist caregivers. In addition, health care fraud diminishes the quality of care received by older adults and can result in the denial of medically necessary treatment.

CARIE, The Center for Advocacy for the Rights and Interests of the Elderly, a private, non-profit organization, began the Pennsylvania SMP in 1997. Retired Medicare beneficiaries teach their peers about fraud and what they can do about it. The message is simple: Protect your personal information, know how to Detect fraud, and know where to Report fraud.

It is important to note that most health care professionals are honest, trustworthy, and responsible. However, some providers are not as honest.

Fraud Prevention Tips: • Medicare and Social Security will never call you and ask for personal information. • Never accept durable medical equipment or supplies from someone who calls you or comes to your door. If you need a piece of equipment, call your doctor first. • Use a calendar to record all of your doctor’s appointments and tests. Check Medicare statements and bills carefully to make sure the services and details are correct. • If someone calls you asking for your Medicare number or personal information (like bank account number) or if you suspect a scam, it’s okay to hang up the phone.

The Power of Negative Thinking

In 1952, Dr. Norman Vincent Peale published his famous book, The Power of Positive Thinking. In 1953, I was born.

What could my parents have been thinking?

Confusing Scripture and psychology, Dr. Peale convinced readers they could “turn wishes into realities.” Through statements like, “Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy,” he intimated that the power of success and happiness is within you and can be unleashed through positive, happy thoughts. Life can be one big Shirley Temple movie.

There are optimists and pessimists. There are optimistic pessimists, positive everything will go wrong. Murphy’s Law (“If anything can go wrong, it will.”) is their Golden Rule.

Actually, pessimists fare rather well: When things go right, they are pleasantly surprised; when they go wrong, they are not disappointed!

In the context of fixing friendships, peace in prayer, and contentment in every circumstance, the bible says, “Whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report; if there be any virtue, any praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:7–9). Positive people find these values worth pursuing, while negative people give up too quickly or don’t think them worth trying. Biblical positive thinking is the essence of faith: Expecting the Word to work.

Faith maintains balance between positive and negative.

Faith cannot just look at positive statements in Scripture and ignore the negative. We should not dwell on God’s love and forget His anger, or merely characterize Jesus as meek and mild and forget he violently cast out moneychangers.

We cannot devour the bible verses we like and scrape the less palatable ones off the plate.

After I taught lessons from Job, many bad things happened (including losing my job, pun intended).

Financial, health, family, friend, and church issues surfaced like mushrooms after the rain. Not one to waste good bad circumstances, I studied the problem of evil. I learned many negative principles that provide power to overcome difficulties and nurture hope.

We know positive verses that guarantee long life, healing, answered prayer, etc. When these promises don’t seem to work, we question God’s goodness. However, by looking at some negative thoughts, we can renew the power to trust God. •We are not out of the woods yet: “The whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one” (1 John 5:19). “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world” (Ephesians 6:12).

•Sorrows may not leave in this life but will in the next: “In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I

(Jesus) have overcome the world” (John 16:33). “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17).

•In Hebrews 11, the saints are commended for their faith, yet many were not rescued from trials. We are in good company, especially if we adopt the attitude of Jesus and Job: “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42).

“The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21). “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him” (Job 13:15).

I find the power of negative thinking—accepting that trials will not all be overcome in this life—surprisingly comforting. The power of success is not in us but Jesus Christ, who said, “Without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). In the end, “God will wipe away every tear from [our] eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying.

There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4). “Meanwhile, we suffer. Ohho-hoh, we suffer” (Yenta, Fiddler on the Roof).

Center For Vision Loss To Honor Dr. Francis A. Salerno

by Karen Z. Huetter, Development Director, Center for Vision Loss The Center for Vision Loss will honor Dr. Francis A. Salerno, Associate Chief of Geriatrics, Lehigh Valley Health Network, with the 2012 Chrysalis Award at a special dinner in October.

The agency, the region’s only community benefit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with vision loss, developed the unique Chrysalis Award to honor the many accomplishments of individuals who are blind or visually impaired that often go unnoticed.

Dr. Salerno has lived and worked in the Lehigh Valley for the past 22 years, making the advancement of geriatric medicine locally and beyond his life’s passion. At age 8, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

At age 29, as a young resident with a new wife and their first child on the way, Dr. Salerno lost his eyesight due to the complications of diabetic retinopathy. But this critical event in his life taught him many things about approaching the world which he has applied to his practice of medicine.

Through personal example, writing, teaching and community involvement, Dr. Salerno quickly became a leader improving services to the elderly. He has also helped establish the Phoebe Institute on Aging and the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley’s Lehigh Valley Alliance on Aging.

Dr. Salerno is a graduate of St. Joseph’s College and the Temple University School of Medicine. He will share his inspirational thoughts as a physician who happens to be blind in his presentation, “In Search of My Own Glide Path,” at the 2012 Chrysalis Award Dinner on Friday, October 26, 6 pm, DeSales University. Meals On Wheels Programs Save Taxpayers Money JoAnn Nenow, President, Meals On Wheels Association of Pennsylvania A 78 year- old widow lost the use of her right hand after she suffered a stroke. After 45 days in the hospital she returned to her home of 48 years, recognizing that she could no longer prepare meals safely. She turned to her local Meals On Wheels (MOW) program for nutritious home-delivered meals so that she could maintain her health. She will tell you: “I couldn’t manage by myself. If I didn’t get Meals On Wheels, I don’t know where I would be…maybe living in a nursing home.”

Homebound seniors and adults with disabilities who receive home-delivered meals are assured of getting the healthy diet they need, leading to greater independence and quality of life. Study after study shows that seniors want to remain living in their own homes for as long as possible. In-home services like your local Meals On Wheels programs help them to remain there.

A modest investment in MOW programs that combat senior hunger and promote good nutrition goes a long way in reducing overall expenditures. Country Meadows regards and respects every resident as a unique individual. As such, co-workers focus on residents’ physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Professionals provide 24-hour skilled nursing care, rehabilitation and memory support services. Resident plans are customized to meet specific needs and Country Meadows offers many choices and options to meet residents’ requests on an individual basis.

Rehabilitation specialists work with residents to develop increased levels of strength, mobility and independence.

Therapies include physical therapy to stabilize or strengthen physical challenges; occupational therapy to encourage residents to reach their highest level of independence; speech therapy to assist residents with communication and swallowing disorders; audiological services as well as hearing aid evaluations, fittings and testing; and respiratory therapy to provide oxygen therapy and breathing treatments.

Short-term rehabilitation services are also available for conditions such as knee or hip replacements and posttraumatic injuries. The Center features a private therapy gym for various therapies. Other long-held myths about “the home” are that residents have no privacy, their surroundings are institutional and draconian, and are served bland meals.
