From the Editor Ahhh, slowly, ever so slowly, Spring approaches. I will be happy not to have to put on several layers of clothing just to walk the dogs. I admit I am a warm weather person so soon I will be a happy soul.

In this month’s issue I talk a bit about one of my favorite topics - hobbies. For those of you who have a hobby you already know the pleasure you get from spending quality time engaging in your hobby.

There are a number of benefits from pursuing a hobby. There are physical, mental and emotional advantages to pursuing a recreational pastime. We discuss several of these advantages in our article.

On the health side we have an informative article on the value of a colonoscopy test.

Those of us over 50 should have the test to help avert one of the most treatable cancer - colon cancer. If you are not 50 yet but have a family history, then you should definitely have the test done.

We have an important article on dispelling some of the myths surrounding reverse mortgages. There is still a lot of misunderstanding about this valuable financial resource so be sure to check it out.

Lastly, we have information about care management for our aging parents. If you find yourself in a position where you need to care for aging parents this article will give you necessary information about this service.

Dealing With Neck Pain

The Value of Hobbies

Recharge When you engage in hobbies you can leave your worries behind and recharge your batteries. Whatever your hobby it can take you away from everyday issues that can have a detrimental effect on your body and mind.

A relaxing hobby can have a calming effect that allows you to get yourself back on track.

Take a Break Hobbies allow you to take a break, but a break with a purpose. If you like being productive here is your chance to take a break and still be productive. If you are making something you will see the fruits of your labor when your task is complete. You are doing something while still having fun. Hobbies are great ways to take a break from your busy life while still having a sense of purpose.

Perspective You need to remember that you have a life other than work. Hobbies show us how important it is to take time for ourselves and rejuvenate our mind and spirit. By distancing yourself from the everyday pressures of life you get perspective – you see the big picture. It gives you a chance to smell the roses.

Research has found that engaging in enjoyable activities during down time were associated with lower blood pressure, total cortisol, waist circumference, and body mass index.

Reversing Reverse Mortgage Myths By: JoEllen Krajsa, President, AFC Reverse Mortgage “Don’t get a reverse mortgage, you’re giving your home to the bank.”

Having been in the reverse mortgage business for the better part of a decade, I have heard many things said about reverse mortgages. Unfortunately for the general public, much of it is not true.

The reverse mortgage program seems to have fallen into this void of misinformation where it can be difficult to distinguish myths from the truth.

as you can probably imagine, a government insured program dealing with seniors and their homes, is heavily regulated with plenty of consumer protection features.

For instance, a borrower is protected against their home depreciating in value. If the amount owed on a reverse mortgage were to rise above the value of the home, the borrower is not forced out of their home.

Take the quote above. I have heard variations of this quote from potential clients, friends, family, articles, and even on an episode of “Modern Family.”

But it simply is not true.

It is a non-event, and the borrower can continue to use the reverse mortgage funds. In addition, the borrower will never owe back more than what the home could sell for on the open market, and no debt from the reverse mortgage will pass onto heirs.

Similar to a typical mortgage, the borrower retains title to their home with a reverse mortgage. The borrower can sell the home at any time and pay off the reverse mortgage at any time.

“They’ll kick you out of your home!”

The only way a borrower could be forced out of their home because of a reverse mortgage is if they do not pay their property taxes or homeowner’s insurance (but that is true of any mortgage!)

“Only use a reverse mortgage as a last resort!”

I have heard this one a lot. As the National Council on Aging states on their web site, “Reverse mortgages are best used as part of a sound financial plan, not as a crisis management tool.” Reverse mortgages are used by many different people for many different reasons. Some of our clients still have significant mortgages on their homes and many do not have any mortgage on their home. Did you know that you can buy a home with a reverse mortgage?

The HECM reverse mortgage program as we know it today began back in 1988 when Ronald Reagan signed it into law. It is insured by FHA and closely regulated by HUD. And

Alright, I had to sneak in something true. Unlike a traditional Home Equity Line of Credit, there are no required monthly mortgage payments with the reverse mortgage line of credit (must still pay homeowner’s insurance and taxes.)

This alone can greatly increase personal cash flow, and allow the individual to direct those monthly mortgage payments towards other expenses.

There is another great feature with a reverse mortgage line of credit. The less money a borrower takes out up front, the more money they will be able to borrow later, because the unused amount grows over time. RSVP - Cyber Seniors

ne of the highlights of my trip to the 2014 AARP Conference in Boston was being able to view the premier of the movie Cyber Seniors.

The very entertaining film documented the experiences of high school students and the seniors they mentored on using some of the latest technologies, like Facebook, YouTube, Skype and the Internet.

On the ride home I remember thinking - since Senior Corps RSVP is open to anyone age 55 and older why couldn’t the same type of “mentoring” occur between two different generations of seniors. Certainly there are plenty of people in their 50’s and 60’s who are comfortable with some forms of technology and I’ll bet some of them would be willing and able to “mentor” someone with little to no experience with social media.

What excitement when her grandchildren, one by one, accepted her Friend Request. How it tickled them to see their Grammy was on Facebook! She has 14 grandchildren, and now 2 great grandchildren, to keep track of. It puts a smile on my face each time I see that my mom, who turns 91 this month, LIKES something on Facebook.

If my mom and I can do this, then why not others? I am no expert with any of this technology.

I can remember the first time I had to use a desktop computer for a part time job. That was 25 years ago using the DOS operating system. I feared I would push the wrong key – one that would most certainly erase some key piece of information.

I have come a long way since then, but still have a long way to go. I do, however, know enough about some things to share with someone else who is eager to continuing learning with me.

Colonoscopy Saves Lives From St. Luke’s University Health Network

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month The prospect of getting cancer strikes fear in the hearts of most people. Yet, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that one third of people age 50 to 75 fail to get a colonoscopy, a screening that test that significantly reduces one’s risk.

During a colonoscopy, a physician uses a thin, flexible tube equipped with a video camera to look into the patient’s colon. The camera projects pictures onto a screen of the inside of the colon and enables the doctor to remove polyps and abnormal growths.

In 2016 alone, colorectal cancer is expected to cause about 49,190 deaths in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

“Colonoscopy saves lives in two ways,” says gastroenterologist Dr. Noel Martins of St. Luke’s Gastroenterology Specialists. “First, should cancer be present, colonoscopy helps us to detect the disease in its earliest stages when treatment is more effective.

Why Good Friday?

G

iven the season we are in, I thought I’d ask a simple, but profound question: Why did Jesus die? In answering this question, many remember what we learned in catechism classes when we were young; Jesus died for my sins. But what does that mean? How does the death of Jesus have anything to do with my sinful behavior. Perhaps a word picture would help. The Old Testament, in some ways, acts as a kind of “word picture”, setting us up to understand something of greater significance that would soon be on display in human history.

Way back in Genesis, after Adam and Eve sinned, they attempted a “cover-up”. The account tells us they made for themselves “fig leaves” to cover their nakedness (i.e., their sin and shame), as if they thought through their own efforts they could “atone” for the wrongs they’d done. But God would have none of that, and “skins” were given them to “cover” their sin and shame, to make them presentable before God. A very early “word picture”; the death of “another” would be necessary to cover their sin.

Many years later, as Israel was about to be delivered from bondage in Egypt, Moses was told by God that the people should slay a lamb and put the blood on the door posts of

their homes. They were to do this so that the LORD would “Passover” those families and spare the death of the first-born child. Another “word picture” – the death of a lamb in the place of the firstborn son.

As Israel’s worship became more refined, a “scapegoat” was introduced into the annual Day of Atonement. A “scapegoat” is – someone who “takes the rap” for what someone else did. Upon the head of this lamb, the Priest would place his hands, symbolically transferring the sins of the people. The scapegoat would then be sent into the wilderness symbolizing that their sins had been “taken away” – taken away because he “took the rap” for what they had done. The blood of the Passover Lamb meant their sins were “covered”, the scapegoat “took them away”.

Now an important twist to the redemptive story comes along. In the Old Testament book of Isaiah, the Servant of the Lord is likened to a lamb that would be punished for the sins of the people: “he was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our inequities; All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned – every one – to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”

When is it time to call a certified care manager?

Seniors, like the rest of society, desire to remain at home and independent for as long as possible. In many cases they fail to recognize or admit that they need help. Additionally, their children may not live close by or are overwhelmed with their parent(s), and do not know where to seek help. A good recommendation is to call a certified care manager.

When to call a certified care manager Common signs that someone should not be living at home or needs help to remain at home include not changing clothes, not bathing, eating the same food everyday, a lack of food in the refrigerator or the presence of spoiled food, stacks of papers everywhere, unopened mail, an individual being too thin or too heavy, not taking medications, not going to their physician, and the individual insisting that ‘everything is fine’.

Sometimes the senior has bruises that often indicate that they have recently fallen.

“We receive frantic calls all the time,” explains certified care manager Lori DeHaas of Senior Solutions. “A daughter who lives out of state, or an adult child who visits a loved one notices a problem and calls us. They do not know where to start or what to do. In response to an inquiry, Senior Solutions will send a certified care manager out to perform an assessment of the individual or have a consultation with the family in our office.

What happens at a certified care assessment?

“We review the medical history, current health issues, medications, cognition, social support system, and look at their activities of daily living including how they bathe, dress, prepare meals, pay bills, house keep, ambulate, and their transportation situation to get a full picture of them,” says Kender.
