his year Artwave Festival is celebrating 25 colourful years of providing a platform for independent artists and makers. Experience the creative and beautiful spaces of over 150 established and up and coming artists across Lewes, Newhaven, Seaford and the surrounding villages.
In celebration of our 25th Anniversary we have also programmed some special colour themed events, including Family Workshops, Art in Nature walks and Art and Film Three Colour Trilogy.
There are wonderful exhibitions, participatory workshops and events taking place over three weekends. In artists’ homes; in studios; large and small galleries; in open gardens and churches, pubs and village greens and lots of other places. All venues are free to visit, making it a truly inclusive event.
Use this brochure, with trails mapped across our towns and beautiful rural areas, to plan your visit and make a fantastic day or weekend out. Experience creative Sussex, take in the art and countryside views, dip your toe in the sea and taste the food that we have to offer. Start or add to your own art collection and visit parts of Sussex you’ve never been to before.

Colour in Nature: Walk, See, Find and Create No experience is necessary. Everyone is welcome to these FREE events, however they are more suitable for adults and accompanied children over age 10.
Come and visit two of our beautiful nature reserves seen through the eyes and knowledge of our Lewes District Council ranger and local artist, Jacky Misson www.jackymisson.com. During the morning the emphasis will be on looking at colours and shapes in nature, will include individual note taking and sketching plus a group collecting and collage or sculpture piece. Some materials will be provided, but do bring your own sketchbooks, pencils and paints. Saturday 18 August • 17:00 Our Art and Film strand is opened by Alexandra Loske, who will provide a brief illustrated talk on the history of colour: how humans have been creating pigments and paints since pre-historic times, the impact of Isaac Newton unravelling the rainbow, and how new ideas about our emotional responses to colour emerged in the Romantic Age. Alexandra will also talk about our special relationship with the colour blue to precede the screening of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s film Three Colours: Blue. Alexandra will present a shorter introduction about the colour white before Three Colours: White (1994) at the Hillcrest Centre in Newhaven on 25 August.
Take this rare opportunity to see Krzysztof Kieslowski’s 1990s arthouse classic Three Colours Trilogy on the big screen in Lewes, Newhaven and Eastbourne over three consecutive Saturdays during Artwave Festival. See just one, or better still come to all three. ‘…a gigantic, puzzling three-part installation, resplendent with its own self-confident strangeness and beauty. Dr Alexandra Loske is an art historian, curator at the Royal Pavilion, editor of the book Languages of Colour (2012) and author of a major forthcoming book on colour, to be published in Spring 2019. She has lectured extensively on colour history and colour theory and has appeared on national and international TV and Radio.

Introduction by Alexandra Loske The most playful and also the grittiest of Kieślowski’s Three Colours films follows the adventures of Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski), a Polish immigrant living in France. The hapless hairdresser opts to leave Paris for his native Warsaw when his wife (Julie Delpy) sues him for divorce (her reason: their marriage was never consummated) and then frames him for arson after setting her own salon ablaze. White, which goes on to chronicle Karol Karol’s elaborate revenge plot, manages to be both a ticklish dark comedy about the economic inequalities of Eastern and Western Europe and a sublime reverie about twisted love.

Free Workshop at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft Lodge Hill Lane, Ditchling, BN6 8SP • www.ditchlingmuseumartcraft.org.uk Join artist Ruby Smith to create badges inspired by our current exhibition, Corita Kent: Get With The Action. Ruby’s practice explores current social commentary with the aim of using craft as a tool to open up discussions around politics and the environment. You are invited into our learning space to make badges with Ruby in response to these themes. Corita Kent (1918 - 1986) was an artist, charismatic educator and Roman Catholic nun based in Los Angeles during the 1960s. Her vibrant screen printed banners and posters drew on pop and modern consumer cultures. Her bright, bold work captured the public imagination in order to influence social change by confronting issues of poverty, racism and war. Her work also resonates with the museum’s permanent collection. Ditchling village has lured many creatives over the years, including the group of renowned artists and craftspeople at the turn of the 20th Century, whose work and lives are celebrated in the museum. Pruden and Smith - A Precious Legacy

2 South Street, Ditchling, BN6 8UQ • www.prudenandsmith.com Pruden and Smith’s contemporary jewellery gallery and workshop on Ditchling crossroads, showcases their designs in gold, platinum and silver, incorporating diamonds and unusual gemstones from all over the world. This year’s Artwave exhibition features hand cut rough diamonds, emerald, tanzanite, lapis lazuli and labradorite. During the festival, take a tour of their workshops to discover ‘A Precious Legacy’, their unique jewellery remodelling service, in which designer Rebecca Smith takes inspiration and materials from client’s jewellery collection to create new designs. Reusing gold and gemstones ensures that jewellery is enjoyed and worn whilst maintaining a sentimental connection to the original pieces. The jewellery pictured was made in their workshop using recommissioned antique diamonds. These ‘old cut’ stones are rare unique pieces created by hand, which Pruden and Smith have remounted in 18ct yellow gold, emphasizing their unique uneven shapes. 01273 846338.

Working together over the last ten years the members of this collective have influenced and encouraged each other to the point where their respective work, whilst individual and unique, resonates with common themes and a shared aesthetic producing, as a studio, an overarching fantastical narrative that runs throughout. Themes such as recycling, reuse and repurposing, from both nature or man-made sources inform the work of this studio. A Sense of Place

Hillcrest Community Centre, Bay Vue Road, Newhaven, BN9 9LH www.senseof.place ‘A Sense of Place’ is a graphic art exhibition exploring the idea of place and what it means. It reveals how places can develop a strong identity and culture, which is felt deeply by local people and visitors alike. It is also a response to the current political climate, which has seen increasing attempts to close borders, restrict our freedom of movement and regulate our ‘sense of place’. The exhibition features 17 Sussex based designers, design agencies and illustrators. All profits from the sale of prints will go to two charities: Refugee Action and The Clock Tower Sanctuary in Brighton. Morag Myerscough’s Belonging Bandstand Newhaven Fort, Fort Road, Newhaven, BN9 9DS • www.festivalofbelonging.co.uk Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft and Brighton Festival present Belonging, a co-commissioned touring installation created by contemporary artist Morag Myerscough stopping at Newhaven Fort during Artwave. The Belonging Bandstand project is born out of the kinship Myerscough feels with the work of 1960s Los Angelino artist Corita Kent, and accompanies Ditchling museum’s exhibition, Corita Kent: Get With The Action. The bandstand will be resident at Newhaven Fort from 22 August (admission applies), however, the Fort opens for free on Bank Holiday Monday 27 August to host the Festival of Belonging - the community’s own organised event (www.festivalofbelonging.co.uk) see page 45 for full details. You will see placards created and painted by local Newhaven residents, inspired by a workshop with Morag on the theme of ‘belonging’, fixed on the crown of the bandstand. I didn’t know why. Then, quite by chance, I discovered that our name had been mistranslated in the notes on the family tree. The correct translation of “Iplic” is “Cotton”!
