America’s Vietnam War veterans are some of the finest examples of the American spirit and citizenship in our history.

When asked to join their countrymen and defend the principles of freedom and liberty abroad, they answered the call to serve. Many volunteered to join America’s military, others were drafted. No matter how they were asked to answer the call, they answered.

They faced constant challenges – shifting landscapes, volatile weather, and an unpredictable threat. Battles could last from hours to weeks. Hard-won territory could change hands in a matter of moments.

Nonetheless, America’s courageous sons and daughters in uniform persevered. But the difficulties they faced during the Vietnam War did not end when they returned home.

They were blamed for a war they did not start, ridiculed when they should have been celebrated. Many were never given a simple, but important, acknowledgment of their military service.

Now, more than 50 years later, we have had the benefit of time to appreciate, celebrate, and honor the selfless service and sacrifice of thousands of Americans during the Vietnam War. We owe them a great debt of gratitude.

Thank you for your service, Vietnam Veterans.

Thank you for putting your life on the line for our country in the fight for the l iberties and freedoms of others.

Thank you for your personal sacrifice in a time of great uncertainty.

You reminded Americans of what it meant to serve, what it meant to answer the call of your country. You became leaders, paving the way for future generations of American servicemembers.

You cared for each other and those who followed in your footsteps. You ensured all who serve in our nation’s military will be treated with the respect and gratitude they are due.

The Fayette County Cultural Trust will never forget your bravery, your dedication, and your sacrifice.

The Wall That Heals will be visiting Penn State, Fayette The Eberly Campus in Fayette County, Pennsylvania this October 2023. Through this initiative we are hoping the exhibit will attract thousands of residents, not only from Fayette County, but the surrounding areas to include the states of West Virginia and Maryland. If you haven’t made it to Washington D.C. to see the Vietnam Memorial, this is your chance to experience the 3/4th replica right here in your back yard during the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War.

Through the pages of this magazine you can see the faces of the 693 service members, from around our area, that lost their lives fighting for the freedoms that we all have today. A majority of these service members were in their 20’s and they never were able to experience growing up in America. A priviledge that we hold today.

The cost of hosting this wall is not FREE. We are also hoping that organizations and individuals will help support the costs associated with bringing this wall home to Southwestern Pennsylvania. Let’s all make the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War a year to remember!

Fayette County Cultural Trust and Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus have partnered together to host The Wall That Heals at Penn State, Fayette from October 12 - 15 2023. This traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall is a 3/4 replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.

On Veterans Day 1996, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) unveiled a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., designed to travel to communities throughout the United States. Since its dedication, The Wall That Heals has been displayed at nearly 700 communities throughout the nation, spreading the Memorial’s healing legacy to millions.

Bringing The Wall That Heals to Fayette County and the surrounding area allows the souls enshrined on the Memorial to exist once more among family and friends in the peace and comfort of familiar surroundings. The traveling exhibit provides thousands of veterans who have been unable to cope with the prospect of facing the Wall to find the strength and courage to do so within their own communities, thus allowing the healing process to begin.

The main components of The Wall That Heals are the Wall replica and the mobile Education Center.

The Wall That Heals exhibit was on the road for more than 13,000 miles and visited 26 communities from coast to coast during its 2021 season. It has been escorted by more than 3,000 vehicles into those communities, and they were able to spread The Wall’s healing legacy to nearly 200,000 visitors. Guided tours of the exhibit were provided to more than 12,000 students so far.

Pennsylvania is home to more than 296,000 Vietnam War veterans, and the Southwestern region in particular played an important role in opposing, supporting, documenting, and prolonging the conflict between North and South Vietnamese.

In this magazine we provide the faces and names of those in our area that were killed in Vietnam from 19631972. We also included the surrounding counties that had casualities during this war and approximate miles and driving times to Penn State, Fayette which is centrally located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

Vietnam Was The First Televised War

The Vietnam War was the first to be televised. In their living rooms watching the evening news, Americans regularly saw film of airplanes flying, often dropping bombs, and troops on patrol, sometimes in combat. The Vietnam War was also the first one in which the United States suffered a clear defeat. An army of half a million Americans failed to crush the attempts of the National Liberation Front and North Vietnam to overthrow the government of South Vietnam. By 1973 the American troops had gone home. In 1975 the North Vietnamese army conquered the South.

It is widely believed that the first feature was the cause of the second, that the United States lost the war because it was televised. Lyndon Johnson believed this. On April 1, 1968, the day after he had announced on television that he would not seek another term as president, he told a meeting of the National Association of Broadcasters,

“As I sat in my office last evening, waiting to speak, I thought of the many times each week when television brings the war into the American home. No one can say exactly what effect those vivid scenes have on American opinion. Historians must only guess at the effect that television would have had during earlier conflicts on the future of this Nation: during the Korean war, for example, at that time when our forces were pushed back there to Pusan; or World War II, the Battle of the Bulge, or when our men were slugging it out in Europe or when most of our Air Force was shot down that day in June 1942 off Australia.”

The president’s meaning was clear: if its previous wars had been televised, the United States would not have persevered in fighting them. Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman would have lost support for their policies even as he had lost support for his, forcing the abandonment of his campaign for reelection.

The fact that scenes from the war appeared regularly on television has seemed to others besides President Johnson to have made it impossible for the United States to win in Vietnam. Regular exposure to the ugly realities of battle is thought to have turned the public against the war, forcing the withdrawal of American troops and leaving the way clear for the eventual Communist victory.

Eight women, all nurses, are among the more than 58,000 names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC.

Most were killed in airplane or helicopter crashes. Only one was killed by enemy fire. First Lieutenant Sharon Ann Lane, an Army nurse listed on Panel 23 West, Line 112, was killed during a rocket attack on June 8, 1969, less than 10 weeks after she arrived in Vietnam. Assigned to the 312th Evacuation Hospital, Lane was working in the Vietnamese ward of the hospital when the rocket exploded, killing her and her patients. She was from Canton, Ohio.

Overall, more than 265,000 women served in the military during Vietnam — and approximately 10,000 military women served in-country during the conflict.

It is a common misconception that all women serving in Vietnam were nurses. Barred from combat, military women served in health care, communications, intelligence and administrative positions.

All had to be volunteers, and like their male counterparts, they volunteered for a variety of reasons: duty to one’s country, a desire to help those serving overseas, or an interest in advancing one’s military career to name a few.

Civilian women also volunteered and served as foreign news correspondents, worked for organizations such as the American Red Cross, Army Special Services, United Service Organizations (USO), Peace Corps, and various religious groups such as Catholic Relief Services, or served in other government agencies.

Volunteer Opportunities

Be an Ambassador

Ambassadors will help with parking at the event, in the information tent and at the mobile education center. The job involves lots of standing and moving around. Volunteers will help greet visitors, find names on The Wall That Heals and answer questions. Ambassadors should be good listeners, willing to engage with everyone and let visitors tell their story.

Volunteers Needed – The Wall That Heals will be open to the public 24 hours from 12 October to 15 October and staffed by volunteers. Volunteers are needed around the clock to greet and assist visitors, should be 18 years old or older, and be able to stand for extended periods. No experience is necessary and volunteer training will be provided. Wear weather-appropriate gear as the exhibit is open rain or shine.

Set Up / Break Down

Volunteers are needed to help set up or break down The Wall That Heals exhibit, which requires some physical labor. Each panel weighs around 80 pounds. Volunteers should be fit, able to climb, lift, use sledgehammer and work outside for six to eight hours. Setting up involves unloading the trailer by hand and assembling The Wall and the mobile Education Center (EC). Breaking down involves disassembling The Wall and loading the trailer by hand.

Ambassadors will help visitors by answering questions and helping find individual names on the memorial. Volunteers will need to attend a training session the day before the event begins.

The exhibit will be open 24 hours a day for four days. Days shifts are typically two to three hours long, while night shifts are between four and six hours.

Ambassadors will be needed between 2 p.m. on Oct. 12 through 2 p.m. on Oct 15, 2023.

In addition to ambassadors, volunteers are needed for assembling the memorial and taking it down afterward.

Assembly begins at 8 a.m on Oct. 11 and will take about six hours.
