Hello and welcome to the Language Services Unit at Anglia Ruskin University. We are pleased that you are thinking about studying with us. Our friendly and highly professional language centre is an important part of the university, providing a wide range of English courses for international students and teachers. Whether you would like to improve your academic skills prior to your degree, prepare for IELTS, enhance your general English or study a summer programme we have a course that suits. We also offer teacher training and development courses, CELTA and bespoke courses for groups. Anglia Ruskin is one of the largest universities in the East of England, with campuses in Cambridge, Chelmsford and Peterborough; with a global student body of 40,000 students and 177 different nationalities. We have some of the best facilities in the UK, having invested £122 million over the past five years.

Cambridge and Chelmsford offer safe, relaxed and friendly places to study. Both campuses are only a short walk to the city centre and train station, with London less than an hour away from Cambridge and 35 minutes from Chelmsford. You will have access to a wide range of cafes and restaurants, sports facilities, an ATM (cash) machine and much more.

Life at LSU At the Language Services Unit (LSU) we have a dedicated team to welcome you to Anglia Ruskin and support you during your studies. We provide a fun and lively social programme to help you make friends, practise your English in a relaxed environment and immerse yourself in British culture. We provide a wide range of services to support you during your studies with the LSU. We continue to offer this support to students who progress onto a degree or Master's programme at Anglia Ruskin, offering free in-sessional English. The facilities and services we provide at LSU include the following;

Visa Support Many of our international students may need advice on immigration and visas. We work closely with our University's International Student Advice Service Team to provide you with this support. You can also make individual appointments. If you need to extend your Tier 4 visa you will be able to do this through the Batch Scheme. Your application will be thoroughly checked before it is sent to the UK Visa Immigration (UKVI) office and you will be kept updated of your visa status. If you use this service it will allow you to enrol onto you degree programme, before you receive your new visa.

Social Programme All students on our full-time LSU courses can join our full and lively social programme. This includes activities both on and off-campus, and local visits around Cambridge/ Chelmsford. These include • Sports Activities (including football, cricket, and rounder’s) • Bowling • Themed parties and events • Punting on the River Cam • Conversation club/games night • Pizza and Quiz events • Ice-skating (winter only) • End of course party If you attend one of our summer courses we also include full-day trips to popular cultural attractions and half-day trips around Cambridge.

Meet Sean Page – Student Experience Officer Hi everyone. My name is Sean Page, I will be the first person you meet when you start your LSU Programme. During your orientation I will introduce you to the rest of the LSU team and enrol you onto your course. As part of your welcome I will also take you on a guided tour of the campus to help you familiarise yourself with the university. To help you settle in I provide information on where you can find all the local amenities you may need including banks (that have ATM’s), supermarkets, restaurants, train and bus stations and anything else you might need. I am available for you to come and see me for any non-academic questions that you may have including information on your accommodation, travel, day trips and much more.

In Cambridge and Chelmsford we have a wide range of accommodation options to suit all preferences and budgets. Our campus accommodation is subject to availability and we would recommend that you book as soon as you have accepted your offer to study with us.

On-campus accommodation In Cambridge and Chelmsford we offer on-campus accommodation which is a great way to make new friends and experience university life. For both campuses our accommodation is just a short walk to the city centre, supermarkets, banks and train stations. All our on-campus accommodation are selfcatering, with access to fully equipped kitchens. There are a range of eating places on both campuses that are open MondayFriday (some are closed during the summer period) and a wide-range of restaurants close by. All rooms are single study with free Wi-Fi access and you have a choice of either shared bathroom facilities or your own ensuite room.

Private accommodation is generally cheaper in Chelmsford but there is a shortage of availability so you need to plan in advance for this. Homestay In Cambridge we offer homestays with full and half board options. This is a great opportunity if you want to live with a family and immerse yourself in British culture.

Private Accommodation There is a range of private accommodation, including short and long-term options. Please note if you intend to rent you may have to sign a contract for the academic year or for 12 months and rent usually excludes bills for gas, electricity and Wi-Fi. If you intend to bring your family we are unable to provide you with campus

Cambridge A great student city

Cambridge is a vibrant city with a fantastic selection of restaurants, high street shops, theatres, museums, art galleries and wonderful architecture. The city is rich in culture and history, with its roots in education dating back to the 13th century. Our Cambridge campus is just a few minutes' walk to all the main tourist attractions.

Attractions: There are lots of places to visit, most of which are within walking distance. Alternatively you may enjoy a bike tour. The city has many museums including the world-famous Fitzwilliam, the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences and Cambridge Museum of Technology. There are also galleries to explore at Kettle’s Yard, and popular music and arts venues such as The Junction and the Corn Exchange. Cambridge is surrounded by beautiful parks and gardens including the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, Parker’s Piece and the riverside park, Jesus Green. Of course we can’t forget Cambridge’s number one attraction, taking a punt along the River Cam for a more relaxed way to sightsee! 10

Chelmsford A modern and dynamic city

Chelmsford is one of the fastestgrowing areas in the south east of England, it’s a compact city that is easy to get around and is only 35 minutes away from London.

Our Chelmsford campus is a 10 minute walk to the city centre and you will have access to all that the city has to offer.

Parks – there are lots of green open spaces where you can play sports for free

Chelmsford canoe club – established in 1946, it runs introductory courses in the spring and summer.

Our Teachers

At the LSU we provide a wide-range of English language programmes to suit different requirements.

At the LSU all our teachers are well qualified and highly experienced. Many are published writers, CELTA and Delta trainers and IELTS examiners. Some also teach on our degree modules, and act as external examiners for other universities.

Pre-sessional courses -designed to improve your English level to progress onto a degree programme at Anglia Ruskin. English for University Studies - to improve your English language and skills IELTS Preparation Courses – giving you the skills to improve your exam results English Language and Culture- for students who want to improve their English and enjoy living in Cambridge Short courses – if you can only study for a limited period CELTA, for applicants that want to pursue English language teaching. Teacher training and development programmes- for groups or individuals (including those with Erasmus Funding)

We are committed to delivering an exceptionally high standard of education and we feel that our responsibility goes beyond the classroom, providing students with a Virtual Learning Environment platform and support in self study and independent learning.

Facilities on campus Once you are registered onto your English course you will have full access to all the university facilities. For most of our courses you will be able to stay on our university accommodation (subject to availability).

Teaching Methods We always focus on the needs of individual students. We use a variety of resources and teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles. Our classes are largely communicative and interactive, to help develop your confidence in communicating in English. Classes usually consist of seminars, workshops and lectures, as well as one-to-one tutorials to discuss your progress and provide additional support where required. You will also be given time for independent study and will have access to our multi media language centre to support your studies. If you have an exam or level requirement to meet, learning will be intensively focused. 15

Pre-sessional English Course Our Pre-sessional English course is an intensive programme designed to prepare you for your academic study at Anglia Ruskin. At the end of the course you should be ready to progress onto your degree programme and feel confident communicating in English.

Course Assessment At the end of the pre-sessional course you will take our English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT). You will be tested on your writing, speaking, listening and reading skills and given a score for each section as well as an overall score. To progress onto your degree at Anglia Ruskin you will need to successfully complete the presessional course and meet the required English requirements for your academic programme. You should not usually need to take any other English Test (please note that some academic courses may have professional requirements that require a specific language test). 17

The course largely focuses on general English language, with an introduction into academic skills and IELTS Preparation.

English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) The English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) has been developed to evaluate your level of English for undergraduate or postgraduate study at Anglia Ruskin. Our ELPT is accepted as proof of your English level and meets the visa requirements for the UK Visa Immigration (UKVI). We provide our English test in the UK and overseas.

Who can take the ELPT? The ELPT test is suitable for students who have:

An offer for a degree programme at Anglia Ruskin but still need to take an English test Taken an English test but haven’t met the English requirements for their academic course Would like to apply for a degree programme at Anglia Ruskin and need evidence of their English level for their application

Where can I take the ELPT? We hold the ELPT at both our Cambridge and Chelmsford campus. We usually hold the test (subject to availability) on a weekly basis in Cambridge and once a month in Chelmsford. The cost of the test in the UK is £95 (2016/17). What does the test include? The ELPT consists of four sections and you will be given a mark for each of these sections, as well as an overall mark. All the components will be taken on the same day and the test should take approximately three to four hours to complete.
