2.1 Introduction

2.1.1 Persons who apply for naturalisation under s.6(1) and s.6(2) of the British Nationality Act 1981 on or after 1 November 2005 are required to have both sufficient knowledge of life in the United Kingdom and sufficient knowledge of the English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic language. Prior to the 1 November 2005, Knowledge of life in the UK was not a requirement for those who applied for naturalisation before this date. Provision about how the requirements in respect of a sufficient knowledge of language and of life in the UK are to be satisfied is contained in the British Nationality (General) Regulations 2003, as amended.

2.1.2 Since 2 April 2007, persons applying for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) following time spent in certain categories of the Immigration Rules, have also been required to demonstrate, by similar means, that they have a sufficient knowledge of language and of life in the UK.
