INTRODUCTION There is growing interest in finding guidelines in living systems to help us understand new forms of designing. The focus of this course is on observing how biological organisms achieve complex emergent structures from simple components. The structures and forms generated by natural systems are analyzed and understood as hierarchical organizations of very simple components in which the properties arising in an emergent manner are rather more than the sum of the parts. The objective is to learn and explore this knowledge to then transfer it and apply it to the design process of architecture and space. DESIGN In this research process, the form finding technique of proliferation of bending property of materials is adopted. This new approach to the creation of form through knowledge of material, and of its “intelligent behavior, complemented by the use of parametric software and advanced modeling will enable to produce designs that are not only totally innovative in material, form and behavior, but also able to adapt to their environment.
Bending study of plastic strips
02
The study of twisting the strips twice and connecting them was discontinued because the double twist caused uncontrolled bending at one end as shown. From this study a single twist and connection method was adopted for further development for the project. Study of curved plastic strips with double twist
03
Various combinations of single twist components and their change in form was analyzed and documented. The physical models were studied first and later digitized using photogrammetry software. The digital models helped in understanding the forms further.
04
Three forms with the required connections were selected for digitizing to extract parameters. These parameters were used in creating a code for digital simulation of the morphology.
05
Analysis of digitized models
06
Developing the connection between the strips from a slit joint to pivot joint.
Study of just two types of end connections and the different forms they produced.
07
08
First attempt to enclose a space using the previous studies
09
An algorithm based on the parameters collected from previous studies was developed. With this algorithm we could predict the growth of the system. The algorithm was tested against physical models. Now we could study growth of the system digitally. With the two types of connections already established, various combinations of the system could be analyzed without actually building it physically.
Digital simulation compared with physical models.

INTRODUCTION The objective of the workshop is to learn CAD/CAM(Computer Aided Design/ Computer Aided Manufacturing) and Rapid Prototyping tools to be able to fabricate complex components for laer designs. The workshop is an introduction to digital production and possibilities it offers to designers, both as a platform for testing ideas and the production of final objects for thesis. A 3D model will be developed in the design studio using paranetric principles. This model will then be manufactured using CNC(Computer Numeric Control) milling technique. The course will include milling simulation, operating the CNC, changing mills, double side milling and re-milling. The 3D model created for digital manufacturing was a parametric simulation of the ripple effect of water surface Ripples created from attractor points

INTRODUCTION The modern definition of artificial intelligence is “the study of intelligent agents.” We say that an intelligent agent is a system that perceives its environment and takes actions that increase their chances of success. In computer science, the “evolutionary computation” is a sub field of artificial intelligence. This is a general term for several computational design techniques that are based in some way in the evolution of biological life in the natural world. This design process will be centered on these processes to achieve self-organization of systems, and generation of complex forms from simple rules.

2
The goal of the project is to create a shelter in the courtyard using computational design process. This process involves experimenting with genetic engine software, programming, scripting and parametric equations to achieve design solutions. The site for this design program is the courtyard of ELISAVA Barcelona School of Design and Engineering.

DATA CLOUD First step of the process is to extract data from the site for analysis. Location of Elisava courtyard is 41.3° latitude and 2.1° longitude according to the geographic coordinates. The courtyard is 15.7M x 26.5M in dimension. Longer axis of the courtyard is at an angle of 44° with the north axis. The availability of incident solar radiation on a given surface or at a certain point in space is called insolation. Autodesk® Ecotect® Analysis was used to calculate insolation levels of the courtyard. Insolation levels were calculated on an average hourly basis for three hours per day. These hours were 09:00-10:00, 12:00-13:00 and 15:00-16:00. The readings were taken at every 2.0M, starting at 2.0M from ground level of the courtyard and ending at 14.0M which gave us a total of seven readings per hour. This insolation analysis was done for four days which represent the two solstices during the year. The dates are March 20th (spring equinox), June 15th (summer solstice), September 22nd (autumn equinox) and December 21st (winter solstice). Average Sun vectors were also calculated.

DATA SCAPE 1 Another way to visualize and process the data cloud was being developed simultaneously with data scape 1. In data scape 2 branching technique was adopted to visualize the data cloud. A square analysis grid points were created on the surface of the courtyard and illuminance values was calculated at every node. Nodes receiving more than 10,000 lux are selected. The python script creates a tree at these nodes. The number of branches and height of the tree is determined by the intensity of light that node receives.
Python code import rhinoscriptsyntax as rs #importing random module import random #creating a list to store output lines bLines = [ ] #defining Function #inputs: levels, starting line def drawbranch(x,line): #if we are at the final branch if x==0: #exit the function return #if not else: #loop through for as desired branches per level for i in range(0,branches): #find the Start and End points of the input line endpt = rs.CurveEndPoint(line) stpt = rs.CurveStartPoint(line) #create a vector from end points vect = rs.VectorCreate(endpt, stpt) #define a random value for rotation rnd = random.randint(rotDom.Min,rotDom.Max) #create a random vector for the rotation axis rndrot1 = random.randint(-5,5) rndrot2 = random.randint(-5,5) #rotate the line vector vect = rs.VectorRotate(vect,rnd,[rndrot1,rndrot2,0]) #find the new end point along vector ptadd = rs.PointAdd(endpt, vect) #create line and add to main list bLines.append(rs.AddLine(endpt,ptadd)) #call recursive function drawbranch(x-1,bLines[-1])
Python code explanation #create a list to store resulting lines #define Function #inputs: levels, starting line #if we are at the final branch #exit the function #if not #loop through for as desired branches per level #find the Start and End points of the input line #create a vector from end points #define a random value for rotation #create a random vector for the rotation axis #rotate the line vector #find the new end point along vector #create line and add to main list #call recursive function #Call to Function #return branch lines to output
Grasshopper Code
#Call to Function drawbranch(levels,sLine) #return branch lines to output Lines = bLinesz
28
DATA SCAPE 2 A data scape is a 3D dynamic polystructure. The result of processing the data on a 3D scenario will define a specific data scape. Parameters extracted from the data cloud analysis are: 1. Control points in the courtyard receiving maximum solar radiation. 2. Average solar vectors during summer season. By logical interconnection of parameters through python scripting we can define a specific data scape. The datascape visualization is achieved by combining average solar vectors and horizontal solar insolation values.
98 sqm
29
RELATIONAL STRUCTURE Data scape 2 was chosen to proceed with new project conditions and using processes to inform the data visualization. New structures connecting data points will allow the development of morphologies to achieve volumetric and spatial response in some way related to the interaction site to system. The target of the relational structures is to simplify the outcome diagrams and make them more comprehensive in terms of form. Openings in the hexagonal polysurface is directly proportional to average horizontal radiation calculated earlier, allowing only required amount of solar radiation to pass through. Angle of each hexagonal polysurface is perpendicular to the average solar vectors.
