St. Francis de Sale

MUNITY OF

es Minor Seminary

The seminary of St. Francis de Sales High School Unit was established on April 23, 1917 but had its beginnings three years earlier. When the Most Rev. Joseph Petrelli, D.D. (1910-1916), the first bishop of Lipa City, took over the administration of his new diocese in 1910, one of his first concerns was to establish a seminary for his diocese. Since he did not have enough priests to run the seminary, he requested the superior of the fathers of the Congregation of the Missions (Vincentian Fathers), better known then as Padres Paules, to provide him with priests for the purpose. Meanwhile, he ordered the Rev. Fr. Vicente Catapang and his own brother, the Rev. Gustavo Petrelli, with the help of some lay teachers, to put up the seminary in Bauan, Batangas on February 1914. The place was called Seminary-College because it admitted not only seminarians who followed the ecclesiastical course but also other students who followed the program of studies sanctioned by the government. Most of the latter had no intention at all of preparing themselves for the priesthood. Regular classes started at the beginning of the school year 1914 with about seventy students. Interestingly, of this first batch of students of the Diocesan Seminary of Lipa, four reached the final goal of priesthood. They were Frs. EliseoDimaculangan, EustaquioDaite, Quintin Garcia and Ricardo Salazar. It was also in 1914 that Vincentian priests Fr. Bruno Saiz, CM and Fr. Felix Perez, CM, arrived in San Pablo, Laguna and opened another seminary. However, barely a year had elapsed when Bishop Petrelli decided to transfer the seminarians from San Pablo to Bauan. Since then, the Vincentians took over the administration of the Seminary-College in Bauan with Fr. Eduardo Gancedo, CM, as Rector. Father Gancedo worked with Fr. Lorenzo Ibanez and Bro. Aguirreche, Vincentian brother, to complete the staff. In 1916, the Most Rev. Alfredo F. Versoza, D.D. (1916-1950), succeeded the Most Rev. Petrelli as bishop of Lipa. The new bishop decided from the beginning of his incumbency that San Pablo was the best site of the diocesan seminary because it was situated at the center of his diocese which then comprised the provinces of Batangas, Laguna, Tayabas, Marinduque and Mindoro. He soon signed a contract with the Padres Paules. On April 23, 1917, Fathers Subiron and Irineo Rodriguez, the Rector, together with his staff, left the Seminary-College of Bauan and took charge of the Seminary in San Pablo. This is considered as the date of establishment of the St. Francis de Sales Seminary. The rectorship was turned over to Fr. Godofredo Peces, CM. A major change was effected in the constitution of the seminary after several years because in 1924, the seminary accepted only those who followed the ecclesiastical course. This measure was adopted in compliance with the directives from the Congregation of Seminaries in Rome. As the years passed, the number of seminarians increased from 40 in 1924 to 100 in 1926. The number was more or less maintained until the year before the Second World War. With the rise in the number of seminarians, there was also a corresponding proportionate increase in

the number of faculty members from six in 1924 to seven in 1926 and nine in 1937 including a lay brother. The seminary building as gradually enlarged to accommodate the growing number of young men aspiring for priesthood. In October 1941, the St. Francis de Sales Seminary was transferred to the new seminary building in Antipolo, Lipa City. At the outbreak of the Second World War, the seminary was forced to close. It was reopened in the Episcopal Palace in Lipa City with 34 seminarians, all in the first year, under the administration Filipino diocesan priests. They were Fr. LeoncioLat, Rector and Professor, Fr. Clemente Yatco, Spiritual Director, and Frs. Alfredo Virrey and AugunioBuendia, Professors. The seminarians were housed in a building in Antipolo, Lipa City, which was formerly used by the Japanese troops as their hospital to treat the wounded and the sick. However, when the school year 1944-45 was about to start, the Japanese took over the place so the seminarians had to transfer to the Episcopal residence. Barely a few days after classes started on September 11, the Americans bombed the airfield causing frightened residents to leave their homes. Except for the second year seminarians for whom regular classes were held, most of the seminarians went home for their own safety. In January, the second year seminarians held regular classes in Barrio Lodlod where a prominent resident Mr. Solomon Lingao, provided a space for the seminarian-refugees. In June 1945, after the liberation of the Philippines by the American forces, the seminarians moved again to the convent in Bauan, Batangas. The place served as the first Seminary-College in 1914. In 1950, the Bishop embarked on the rebuilding of the cathedral with the major seminary adjacent to it. It was during this time that Bishop Verzosa was replaced from the administration of the diocese with the appointment of Bishop Rufino Santos (1950-1953) as Apostolic Administrator of Lipa. Because there was a need for a place for the major seminary, a new building on the site of St. Agnes Academy, Lipa City, was constructed. Added to this was the construction of a new annex building in Bauan, Batangas for the minor seminarians. Finally, there came the idea for the construction of a big building intended as a regional seminary for the Lipa Diocese and the

Lucena Diocese which has been segregated from Lipa during this period. When Bishop Santos was installed Archbishop of Manila, he took with him to Manila all the major seminarians as well as the Belgian Fathers who were their professors during that time. The huge building in Marauoy, Lipa City which they vacated became the formation house of the minor seminarians who relocated from the annex building in Bauan, Batangas. In 1953, the newly-appointed Bishop Alejandro Olalia, (1953-1973) decided to have his residence at the St. Francis de Sales Minor Seminary which was finally built in a land donated by the Leviste Family he became bishop and rector of the seminary. During the incumbency of Archbishop Ricardo Vidal (1973-1981) the Regional College Seminary was established. To give ample space for college seminarians coming from different regions which comprised the ecclesiastical province of Lipa, in 1974 the minor seminarians moved to the new Cursillo House situated near the Bishop’s Palace and De La Salle Lipa. When Fr. Ernesto Mandanas, Jr. became the Rector (1973-1986) two brick edifices which served as the big boy’s dormitory, and the chapel were constructed to accommodate the increasing number of seminarians as well as to make the place a fitting home for formation. The St. Francis de Sales Minor Seminary – High School Unit has remained in its present location since 1974. There have been five rectors after Fr. Ernesto Mandanas, Jr. before SFS Seminary entered a new phase in its history. Fr. HermogenesQuiambao (1987-1991), Fr. Reynaldo Evangelista (1992-1995), Fr. LeonidoDolor (1996), Fr. Ildefonso Dimaano (1997), and Fr. Raul Francisco Martinez (1998-2003). In 2002 during the incumbency of Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales (1993-2004), a decision was arrived at to gradually phase out the high school seminary. It was this year when newcomers were not admitted. Thirty seminarians remained. The following year there was a new set of formators: Fr. Bernard Aguila, Rector, Fr. Wilfredo Rosales, Prefect of Discipline, and Fr. Clarence Patag, Spiritual Director. By then another development took place. All the lay faculty were terminated since there were only nineteen seminarians left under the care of the priests. It was only Sr. Julie Micosa, MCSH, principal, who was retained. The remaining seminarians cross-enrolled at Canossa Academy, Lipa City where they attended classes in the morning while in the afternoon they were taught Religion and language subjects by the priest formators and Sr. Principal in the seminary. In July 16, 2004, Most Rev. Ramon C. Arguelles, D.D. was installed as Archbishop. After his consultation with the clergy of Lipa, a unanimous decision was arrived at – the St. Francis de Sales Minor Seminary – High School Unit will accept enrolees again. On October of that same year, a general reshuffle of the Lipa clergy was done and a new set of formators were assigned in the seminary.

A maturing Catholic young man formed toward Christian leadership and service, while discerning in himself the seed of priestly vocation by developing his personal relationship with God and others, and manifesting love for studies following the spirit of St. Francis de Sales.

With docility to the Holy Spirit, we, the community of St. Francis de Sales Seminary, High School Unit, under the maternal guidance of the Blessed Virgin Mary, commit ourselves to grow in the life of Discipline, Prayer, Love and Compassion for Others as we develop in us the virtues of honesty and gentleness, humility and simplicity, diligence in study and sense of service to the church and the community after the examples of St. Francis de Sales.

HIS HOLINESS

Pope Francis Bishop of Rome

HIS EXCELLENCY, MOST REVEREND

Ramon C. Arguelles D.D., STL Archbishop of Lipa

PRAYER FOR PRIESTS Lord God, we thank you for gathering us to celebrate vocation and your gifts to us, your faithful priests. Thank you for sending us them who will edify those under their care. Lord, we ask that your priests may be free from sickness and that they may always be healthy and fit to minister to your people, the flock they shepherd. Grant the grace they need the most. Grant us also the grace to help one another in building your kingdom of love and peace here on earth “for the kingdom of God in among us.” We ask the help of Mama Mary’s prayers and her maternal intercession. Grant all these through the mighty name of Jesus, our Lord. Amen. by: Sem. Mico Uriza
