DUAL IDENTITY

DANCING STUDIO | UC BERKELEY U C B E R K E L E Y - AR C H 1 0 0 C - P ro f J E A N PAU L BO U R D I E R - FA L L 2 0 1 6

EXTERIOR - STREET VIEW The flat exterior exterior of the dance studio is part of the dual identity concept; which strenghten the distinct characteristic of the interior. The minimal exterior makes the dancing studio blend in with its surrouding without giving any overwhelming sense to the adjascent building.

DANCING STUDIO

explores the dual morphology of dancing, as a form of human artistic expression through movement. This project takes the concept of partnership in dance, where two opposite people explore synchronized ryhtmic movement. The duality of movements are both express in an conceptual archiecture form, which are generated through several sketches, which redefine the existing Bancroft dance studio which is located at the corner of Bancroft way and Dana St. The concept of duality inspired the site analysis, to respond the new form of architecture. The defensive and rigid form of Zellerbach hall influence the exterior of the dance studio, while the exciting street of bancroft inspire the transparency of the exterior and the blob architecture whithin the studio.

GOOD FOOD PROJECT | SAN FRANSISCO U C BERKEL EY - ARC H 100B - L EG G YEU NG - S PRING 2016

GOOD FOOD is a programatic based project which serves as a self-productive building in SOMA neightborhood, San Fransisco. The main three program of this building are vertical farm, auditorium, and market or food court. The complexity of the require students to take a precedent analysis to help solving the problem. SIX FACADES is a derived from the analytical studies of the Broad Museum in Los Angeles. The six facades explore six complex conditions between the veil and the vault of the following project to help solving the complex condition of the required programs.

ing, where the “belly” of the vault mimic the uneven condition of the ground.

THE SIXTH CONDITION THE VEIL intersect with the VAULT to provide natural lighting from the roof to the auditorium. This also open opportunity for the audience to view the A-FRAME farming strategy which is embeded to one of the veil condition.

THE VEIL also provides natural light for the upper level gallery. The gallery will serve as the artistic pesentation of self-productive building. Each artworks will be displayed around the A-FRAME embeded veil.

THE AUDITORIUM is a performace space within the vault. The auditorium gain light from the intersecting condition between the veil and the vault

AUDITORIUM + MAIN ESCALATOR The auditorium serves as main performace stage, white a tubular escalator penetrates the auditorium from the ground floor to the gallery area.

SECTIONAL MODEL

THE VEIL + A-FRAME ESCALATOR

an elongated space which penetrate the veil from ground floor all the way to gallery. The escalator dissects the vault into several unique spactial programmatic sequences within the good food buildings.

KITCHENS

the fifth facade of the building, a flat section of vault which respond to the building on the north side of good food.

the Sixth facade shows the extruded roof touching the veil. The extrusion creates a space within, which is used for the A-Frame framing system.

VIEWING CORRIDOR

the Third facde of good food which express the interaction between the veil and the vault by creating an opening of a corridor space, with a view to the street.

AUDITORIUM

the ceiling of autiorium is established through the wraping system of the veil from the outside to the inside of the building.

FOOD COURT

the first facade of good food. The uneven dynamic surface provides a unique playful experience for the visitor.

CONCEPTUAL CUT Conceptual cul includes a portion of detailed section which explains the relationship between skin (the veil/envelope) with the given program within good food building. This partiuclar conceptual cut is take at the corner of South-East section, which clearly shows the entrance to the building and the entrance to the vault. This conceptual cut also shows closer look on the details of the Third Facade of this building.

VERTICAL VEIL

is a composition of vertical fiberglass strips which arranged parametrically in respond to the condition of the vault within.

OPERABLE WINDOWS

exist within the intersection boundary of vertical and horizontal veil. This operable window provide shading and sun space system

HORIZONTAL VEIL

keep the verticals veil intact together. The horizontal veil also provides anchor points for the operable windows in between the vertical veils.

CONCRETE VAULT

creates a sense of heaviness within the good food building. The concrete vault warps most of the programs within the building. The concrete material provide thermal mass and sound proofing between each layers of programs

GALLERY + A-FRAME FARMING SYSTEM The Gallery is located at the upper level of the vault. It serves as both display area for artistic purpose and A-Frame display.

CHAPEL is small landscape + building project which explore spatial and volumetric quality of architecture before apply any program within. This project requires students to skecth a series of volumetric architecture forms which later be trancended into a real scale functional building. TWILIGHT POINT

expresses the trancended experience of visitor within a chapel on the highest point of Mountain View Cemetary. The twilight point relief the mixture feelings of visitors who are dwelled in either happiness or sadness. The twilight point forces audince to see the world from narrow slide openig, thus trancend the feeling the ambigous feelings of each inhabitants.

THE HALLWAY

The elongated hallway is made purposely to take the inhabitant in a long sequencial preperation process before entering the main chapel. The dark interior with pattern express the idea of ambiguity of feelings.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING is 2 weeks period project which explore the form based on function/programmatic purpose of the house. In other word, its designs comes from “inside-out. There are 3 types of housing: 1:1, 1:2, and 1:8 in proportions. THE FACADES distinguish one house from anothers, however the difference needs to creates harmony when these houses are clustered together. The design of the facades is the result of sketch works which are done before any digital translation of the project. The purpose of the sketches to quickly explore expressive facade which deep aesthetic used of materials and small modular components such as door, windows, shingels, louvers, etc.

UTOPIA AGGREATION explores the next step of creating small community based on the aggregations of this houses. The facades of these houses will synchronize through uniqe exploration of the clustering system.

U C B E R K E L E Y - ARC H 1 0 0 A - J O N AT H A N P U F F - FA L L 2 0 1 5

RETRACTION The double negative project focus on creating a third condition as the result of intersecting two negative/ void spaces. The retraction concept emphasizes on the condition of being retracted/pulled back/ pulled backward. Thus, this project focuses on the condition of being pulled backward or in other words, simplification.

PRIMARY/CORE

The first and the second void create an intersections RETRACTION APPLIED

in the center of the bounding box. It creates the third condition which is the simplified form of two voids. The complex pattern on the entrance wall is being retracted to the simpler form in the center of the box.

RETRACTION - SEQUENCE The next iteration of double negative project explores the sequential possibility of the negative spaces. The two negative spaces will provide circulation from the ground floor all the way to third floor. The intersecting negative volumes provide programatic spaces for people to interact with each other.

This special sequential model follow the simple of double negatiive. Simple negative volumes provides clear circulation from ground to third floor. The main focus of this project is the skin. The tiwsted vertical fins follow the ryhtm of human movenment, providing extraordinary experience for people while they are circulating the space.
