SMML CHAPEL Area: 3,877 SF Client: Saint Mary Mercy Livonia Hospital Type: Expansion Budget: $3,800,000.00 Credit: PLY Architecture Project Description: The Saint Mary Mercy Chapel and spiritual center is an addition to an existing hospital that has been serving southeast Michigan for over 60 years. The new chapel and spiritual center contribute to this vision by providing spaces of worship, contemplation and emotional refuge to the hospital’s staff, patients and visitors and thereby recognizing the healing potential of architectural space. The project includes a Roman Catholic Chapel, a Muslim ablution space and prayer room and a non-denominational contemplation space oriented toward a courtyard garden. Our approach negotiates the varied demands of scale, religious heritage, emotional well-being and spiritual preferences through the careful choreography of geometry, material qualities and light.

Project Description: The goal of the project is to envision an urban housing project which provides distinct functional amenities to accommodate a population with increasingly diverse needs. The approach is through considering housing development as the forming agent of new URBAN ROOMS, spaces which are of the community and fostered by residents. Urban Balcony Courtyard, consists of two parts; the sunken area with more trees and the elevated mounds for the public communication. Urban Living Room Courtyard is composed of a central poured-in-place rubber flooring playscape. The space is left open to cater to smaller community events. Urban Study Courtyard is a landscape of smaller, more intimate study spaces.

All three courtyards are elevated five feet above ground to accommodate a half-sunken parking. This amenity, which runs beneath each block unit, provides elevated privacy for street level units. Each level of the residential buildings contains a diverse mix of studio, one and two-BR units.
The Dequindre Plaza is our most open public space, acting as a threshold between the public interface and the more private Urban Balcony. It anchors the threshold spaces in the corner closest to the Eastern Market, and grounds the project in what is a shared commercial space for both the public and residents alike. Along Division St., the Plaza faces one of many murals which define the character of the district from the bodies of ‘Murals in the Market’ work.

Dequindre Courts Apartment offers a more affordable communal style living option known as the ‘share-house’, where individual or groups of residents may live in a communal style duplex, with individual bedrooms, shared bathrooms and gain in exchange larger communal living rooms and kitchen spaces. With diversity in unit options, multi-generational families can live in close proximity and residents of many lifestyle preferences may be accommodated.
The sub-communal threshold spaces accommodate shared amenities like a car sharing/ electric car charging area and bike storage. These pocket spaces are accessed by cyclists and pedestrians all through the sub-communal streets that are extensions of the more open public spaces on a more intimate scale.

SHUFFLING THE DECK Type: Architectural Research / Study Project Description: This project challenges the method of assembly of a room’s layers, in order to create interesting and unique spaces in the room. Conventionally, there is a specific stacking order for the layers within architecture, from top to bottom, and from exterior to interior. Vertically, these layers are roof layer, roof structure layer, equipment layer, furniture layer, floor layer, and if any, plant layer and water layer; horizontally, they are window layer, exterior wall layer, vertical structure layer, interior finish layer, and curtain layer. However, why does the roof layer have to be above other layers? The original order is reasonable for construction purposes and convenient for architectural purpose. However, nowadays it is not necessary to follow this rule exactly because of changes in life style and building technology. More and more gardens and swimming pools occur on the rooftops of the buildings. These designs put the plant layer or water layer above the roof layer, which expresses a similar spirit to this project. Shuffling the Deck goes even further in the exploration of challenging the method of assembly of a room’s layers, in order to create interesting and unique spaces in the room. I shuffled the deck as many times as I can to provide more possibilities for the further design.

Not many architects like columns and walls. These supporting elements of the building define the boundary between in and out, which is not a welcoming gesture. In this room Take Your Seat, I overlay the furniture layer and the vertical structure layer, making the chair backs as the columns. This eliminates the boundary of the room and creates a welcoming space for people.

A school is a very special architecture type which requires more space than others because of the playground area. Today, more and more space is used for residences, restaurants, and commercial buildings. The space left for children, which is not as profitable as other usages, is being extremely restricted. In this situation, the project, “COME-OUTSIDE Kindergarten� solves this problem by providing a spiral ramp which can be considered as a central transportation system, a roof, a playground, and also a courtyard at the same time. Children can enjoy their school lives on the spiral ramp, having no need to worry about always staying inside.

The project consists of two spirals: a small one for entrance, as well as a big one for classrooms and offices. In addition, there are two small cylinders for the kitchen and music room. After walking into the building from the main entrance, people can find all the classrooms to the south, while all the offices to the north. They are separated by the corridor directing the people from the exhibition to the music room. The water pool and the sand pool are located in the courtyard by the corridor. The entire project is very centralized in order to get the balance between “safe” and “playful.”

RUTHERFORD POOL Area: 4,420 SF Client: Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission Type: Renovation Budget: $600,000.00 Credit: PLY Architecture Project Description: The Rutherford poolhouse is a proposal to bring new life to an existing municipal poolhouse in need of renovations. Responding to a tight budget in a city recently emerging from near bankruptcy, the proposal uses readily available and inexpensive building materials to transform a utilitarian cmu box into a more inviting and dynamic site of public infrastructure. The proposal upgrades basic infrastructure while also paring back active environmental systems in favor of passive approaches. The exterior is clad with a screen of synthetic decking, taking advantage of the flexibility of the material to introduce waving lines of contours to animate the existing homely structure thereby offering a new image that the community feels worthy of investing in.

The proposal upgrades basic infrastructure while also paring back active environmental systems in favor of passive approaches. The circulation for family has been placed into the layout in order to satisfy the need of family, without disturbing the spaces of men’s and women’s locker rooms. In terms of the passive technique, an examle of this is opening the roof of the locker rooms for natural ventilation and reconfiguring plumbing to allow for winter shutdown of the facility.

REVERSED-GARDEN HOTEL Area: 68,600 SF Client: Academic Project Type: Hotel Award: Third Place Award of the Year 2014 (SCUT) Project Description: Unlike other gardens regarded as outside part of an architecture, some of the traditional Chinese gardens are known as not only “outside” but also “inside” area. To intensify and achieve an even stronger experience and space, I increase the openness of indoor and at the same time decrease the openness of outdoor. Therefore, the ambiances of indoor and outdoor mix, and a space with more exciting and approximate interaction is generated. This project reverses the normal sense of a garden and goes even further with this inversion through organizing the open-rooms and closed-gardens in the plan, in order to give the guests another experience of living styles in their temporary home -- hotel.

SCUT CAMPUS LIBRARY Area: 83,500 SF Client: South China University of Technology Type: Education Project Description: The proposed library located on the campus of the South China University of Technology follows the central axis of the historical campus layout, remaining the symmetric outline in the site plan. However, it contains and integrates two different parts, the open and light area as well as the closed and solid area, in order to serve complex needs and activities of the students and teachers. The light part, including lobby, cafe, and exhibition, is more noisy and lively; it is at the southwest corner of the building, with a dynamic form and more transparent material. The massive part, including reading rooms, storage, logistic, and some other functional spaces, is large and solid; it is a regular L-shape with the more non-transparent material, which provides a solid background for the light part. These two parts cooperate to create an interesting and functional library for the students and faculty.

"DETROIT" IN FRONT OF DETROIT Type: Architectural Research / Study Project Description: In response to the proposition of “Scale,“ the project,“detroit“ In Front Of Detroit, proposed an idea to take the downtown area of Detroit out, shrunk it and put it in the Detroit River. Generally, it is a tiny, explosive “Detroit” in front of the real Detroit showing both its scaled-down ground surface and its scaled-up underground surface. A precedent study about the relationship between roof surface and ceiling surface inspired me to deal with the relationship between ground surface and underground surface in the city. The relationship of roof and ceiling is not just about one above another, but can be read as interacting, overlapping, twisting, repeating, etc, accompanying with the involvement of structure system, mechanical system, drop ceiling element and so on. What if the roof surface is translated into the ground surface, the ceiling surface is translated into the underground surface of the city? In my design, the buildings on the ground surface scale down to the rooms of office, residence, and restaurant. For example, the Ford Field (Detroit baseball field) turns into a restaurant with big tables in the “field” and small table in the “bleachers.” In terms of the small components, the gate becomes the door; part of the wall becomes the awning. In contrast, the mechanical system on the underground surface scales up to the factory, exhibition and transportation of the cars, which are the symbolic types of Detroit buildings. For instance, the pipe turns into an elevator. This is a deconstructed Detroit with multiple facets of the city at the same time.
