West Loop Chicago Mixed-Use Project:
Located in the West-Loop area of Chicago, this project is intended to be a space where the community within the area feels comfortable coming too. With a music school, health club, hotel and retail spaces, this project caters to all demographics. The twelve story boutiqye hotel, is full of family-friendly spaces that are welcoming and fun fr all ages. It also has a 360-degree penthouse area that gives a beautiful outlook over the West-Loop area. The curved walls within and along the balconies of the project, add an unusal and playful look to the project. This project has taught me a lot about the complexity behind such a large mixed-use building. It showed me the value in thinking ahead and being aware of the aspects that need to be included over time. I also learned about how although it may be difficult. there is a certain satisfaction to stepping outisde the box and creating a project that is more unique. The thought-process that comes with figuring out codes and such really pushes the bounds of arcitecture and builds something that is truly amazing.
Downtown Calgary, Alberta Infusion Ministries
Located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, my hometown, this project hold a very special place in my heart. As the first major mixed-use project that I have done, Infusion Ministries is meant to be a place that is welcoming for all people. Within the project, there is a Seventh-Day Adventist Church, retail spaces, classrooms, a health club, a restaurant, and a living space on the top level, for displaced teenagers that are members of the LGBTQ+ community. This project taught me the importance of creating space and helped me expand my knowlegde on the complexity of mixed-use projects. I also learned how to create an accessible rooftop space and the unusal things that you can do with architecture, such as creating a giant curve that peaks at the street corner of your building.
Art District, Benton Harbor City of Metal
Located in the Arts District of Benton Harbor, Michigan, this is by far my favorite project. The City of Metal was inspired by the concept of Legos. Basically this project is full of shipping containers with a crane the runs through the center of the project, that can move the containers around whenever needed. This project has housing, pop-up stores, retail spaces, and open areas for Pecha Kucha’s as well as a splash park. The concet of shipping containers was to create a temporary space for people within the distrcit. Many artists look for pop-up spaces in which they can sell or display their work, as well as small businesses looking for afforable rental spaces. This block is for those who are starting out and want to make something of themselves. This project really should me how fun architecture can be and that thinking outside of the box can have amazing results. It also allowed me to explore the bounds of SketchUp and improve my skill within this program.
