SCSS commences First Junior High School Days By JASMINE ROSE Q. GABUYA

The 2nd day of September marked the start of the first ever Junior High School Days in the history of Saint Carmen Sallés School where each grade was agog to bring home the bacon. Shazia Meitzel Gabo of Grade 9 carried and lit the torch which marked the start of the competition. Each grade chanted their winning yells starting with the Grade 7 Battalion, the Grade 8 Greencredibles, the Grade 9 Dark Green Pythons, and the Grade 10 Fiery Neon Green Dragons. Each Friday the elimination for the ball games was held at the school gymnasium where every team was eager to gain the trophy and only the best of the best wins. The most awaited day of the JHS Days was the championship of the ball games and the High School War. Starting with the volleyball boys wherein the Fiery Neon Green Dragons won over the Grade 8 Greencredibles with the score 25-18 on the first set and 25-12 on the second. The championship game for the volleyball girls took place where the Grade 9 Dark Green Pythons fought over the Grade 10 Fiery Neon Green Dragons. The Grade 9 won with their spectacular spikes, blocks and receives.

The fight that everybody's been waiting for was the basketball boys where the Grade 8 Greencredibles kneeled at the Grade 9 Dark Green Pythons with the score 58-55. The girls proved that they can do what boys can during the basketball girls. The Grade 9 bags the crown beating the Grade 8. The bingo games joined by all students where many won also occurred and the Minute to Win It where every grade competed with 5 representatives each nailed by the Grade 10. The most memorable event of the JHS Days was the High School War. Each grade has to protect their class mayors from the opposing grades. Each had water guns and formed a circle to protect their mayors. At the end, the high school war was stopped because of a certain issue that was solved the day after. The overall champion, Grade 9 Dark Green Pythons, brought pride and honor to their grade as they made a history to be the first champion of the 2016 JHS Days.

More Than a Saint By YUVAL C. ADERA

St. Teresa of Calcutta September 4, 2016 was a memorable day for millions of people as the Holy Father Francis canonized a new saint. People all over the world have witnessed the “Living Saint” officially became a saint. She is no other than Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

Saint Teresa was born on August 26, 1910 in Albania and was baptized with the name “Agnes”. In her early days, she was fascinated by the life stories of the missionaries and their service in Bengal. At the age of 18, she joined the Sisters of Loreto and was assigned in India as a teacher. She chose the name “Teresa” in honor of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, the patron saint of missionaries. She saw the world and she became increasingly disturbed by the depressing poverty around her, and while travelling by train, she experienced “a call within the call” and felt a strong urge to leave the convent and serve the poorest of the poor. In 1950, together with 13 young women, they founded the Missionaries of Charity, whose mission was to take care of “the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, those who feel unwanted, unloved and uncared for throughout the society” as Mother Teresa stated. She opened many shelters that welcomed the sick and the dying; travelled around the world to help all those who need refuge; and spread the Gospel of poverty, peace, and love. Because of her tireless help, she received numerous awards and recognitions and was greatly honored in many parts of the world, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award in the Philippines.

The Olympic torch lit in front of Mother Carmen’s statue as a sign that the JHS Days has begun. Her health started to decline in the year 1983. She died on September 5, 1997and was beatified by her good friend, St. John Paul II on October 19, 2003. After 13 years, she was canonized by Pope Francis on September 4, 2016. Let us pray to Saint Teresa that the Lord will make models of charity and mercy, as the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy is coming to an end. “If I become a Saint, I will be a saint of darkness because I have to take the darkness of the world in heaven.” - Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Adelante Siempre Adelante From The Editor Jhan Kenneth Lloyd B. Ambrosio Unity in diversity is an idea of solidarity without consistency and differing qualities without fragmentation that shifts center from unity base on a mere tolerance of differences towards a more complex unity in view of an understanding that distinction improves human cooperation and relations. Unity is a power of many brought by a single goal, mission and purpose. One is needed, one is required. Differences and uniqueness of oneself contributes to the whole system of society containing different kinds of capabilities sharing for a common goal. Seeking differences in every individual help everyone to accept themselves, their flaws and abilities, and to accept others to enrich their relationship with one another. According to Virchand Gandhi “This is my country, that is your country; these are the conceptions of narrow souls – to the liberal minded the whole world is a family.” Therefore, distinction can be a way for the humanity to grow and improve. It seeks to move beyond mere tolerance of other ethnic, cultural and religious divisions, however looks to advance each particular constituent part plays a legitimate commitment which reinforces the whole. After all being different is the essence of humanity like what John F. Kennedy said, “The unity of freedom has never relied on uniformity of opinion.” And with the words aforementioned, there are some issues that tackle differences or uniqueness of one. One of which is “Racism”. It is a poor treatment of or violence against people because of their race. Some believe that some races of people are better than others. Some make ones ethnicity as their basis of one’s character and reputation without giving him or her to show his or her true self. A great deal of our states of mind are molded when were young. At the point when our relatives or companions express supremacist assessments, it’s common that we will go up against those perspectives ourselves. The issue is that, unless we make a move, they can stay with us for a lifetime. It’s typical to us to invest time with individuals that have the same interests, foundation, culture and dialect. It makes a feeling of having a place that is truly essential. The drawback Is that it can likewise set up contrast between different groups and, after some time, this may lead us to believing that our group is superior than others. There are no reasons or excuses for this kind of prejudice. It simply off-base. What’s more? In numerous cases, bigotry is illegal.

Our principal, Sister Regina Lee, with the school faculty and staff decided to start the event with a Eucharistic Celebration commemorating the Death Anniversary of St. Carmen Sallés, our Patron Saint "All the faculty and staff made their best to improve the organization of the event. They focused on the safety of the students by disciplining them to act properly during events like these (SCSS Got Talent)." statement from SCSS school principal, Sister Regina Lee. The school is really focusing on its major improvement with in terms of the safety of the students by promoting and implementing certain rules to guarantee the parents. Nicole Centeno said “I just want to challenge myself”. The clash was really tight. The competitors really gave their best to the finals. Some entered the competitions to gain points and/or to challenge themselves on what they are capable of. "I just practiced a week before" she added. Centeno's assurance of victory is stated. Her confidence prevailed among the others. After winning the contest once more, she was more determined in winning the NOPSCEA contest as well as the other winners.

Korean Teachers Visit SCSS By ERICA MARIE N. MAGDATO SCSS Junior High School students held a Mini Olympics last August 5, 2016. The majority of the students thought it would be some athletic sports like basketball, volleyball, and badminton but the game was Korean style Dodge ball - even better! There are minor injuries but overall it was really amusing. After the game, I’ve got the chance to have an interview with the Korean visitors and here are some of it! Olivia: I’m really happy that everyone enjoyed. We prepared a lot and I can see that everyone is happy but I’m worried at first. Ted: I thought it would be a chaos but I was very happy, I was satisfied. Adele: A little bit harder to control than I expected but it was worth the time. Jenny: Very strong so I was worried. They threw the ball so strong and I have participated but some of the students didn’t care. I’m also happy. Very cute. Very energetic. I’m also happy with the high school students. Jacob: Much active and that gave me some positive energy and I thought that the Grades 7-10 are very happy. I thought that it would be better that we prepare for lower grade students physical activities. Henry: It was very fun but someone got hurt, we said don’t throw it very strongly. We are very sorry that she was hurt but after that everyone was having fun. All the teachers and students were very happy and we are also happy to join the class with everyone. We can’t join the class with Grade 3, we are very sorry for them. I think next year Korean people like us will teach them. So thank you for inviting us in this school and we enjoyed so much. They also had their classes with the elementary and the elementary students enjoyed their company. It was fun meeting them and hopefully, another batch of Korean students will visit our school and have fun with us too!

Filipino: Wika ng Karunungan By LENCY S. ROSANA & SHARMAINE NICOLE M. DITCHON

DEVCOM: Practical Ways to Prevent Dengue By Rocel B. Divinagracia Thousands of cases are reported every year brought by this vicious killer- Dengue, a deadly sickness caused by the bite of Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes. Its most common symptoms are high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands, muscle and joint pain, and rashes. Dengue is like a thief in the night, nobody knows when it will strike. Because time is too precious to waste, here are some ways to prevent Dengue: Make sure to clean all the areas in your house, especially the areas that water might stay and mosquitoes might reproduce. Turn empty pails and buckets upside-down so that they do not collect excess water. Regularly replace the water in your flower vases. Make sure your window and door screens do not have any holes. If so,

block those areas properly to avoid passage for mosquitoes. Light up a mosquito killer “katol” during the night. Its scent kills mosquitoes at contact. A good alternative for a mosquito killer if you have Asthma is sleeping under a mosquito net. Always cover your trash can if not in use. If possible, apply lotion on your skin to irritate mosquitos. Using of OFF Lotion is highly recommended. If ever you get to have fever for 3-4 days, make sure to have a checkup and admit if possible. Always remember to live a clean and healthy life. Be safe! Be alert! Move now before it’s too late. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” – St. Carmen Salles

He informed everyone about his plan and he encouraged them to clean their own surroundings. So, they started cleaning. They cleaned for a couple of days. Unity in a Team By Cathleen C. Famoso & Kristine Nikka B. Garfil There’s a volleyball team who never experienced winning because they lack teamwork. Amanda, their team captain, doesn’t listen to what her fellow teammates are telling her. She wants them to obey what she commands always. After another loss, her teammates gathered enough courage to tell her what they want to say. “Amanda, why won’t you listen to us?” Sophie, one of her teammates told her. "I'm the team captain here so you need to listen to me," Amanda shouted in response. "We're part of the team Amanda, we are your teammates, you also need to hear us out," Annabeth piped in the conversation. “I’m the team captain, I do whatever I want and I do not want to listen to all of you,” Amanda said. Upon hearing those words, her teammates left the room. They decided to quit playing volleyball. Amanda, the only person left in the room, can feel the guilt running in her veins. The next day, Amanda visited her grandparents. She saw a group of boys playing basketball and she saw how they united and assisted each other during the game. She witnessed how they won the match. Realizing that she committed a mistake, she approached her teammates and asked for their forgiveness. Amanda shared to them that the key to winning is being one and united. After that incident, they savored their first win.
